Early Learning Coalition of SW Florida accepting VPK enrollment applications Looking for an enriching educational experience and a nurturing environment for preschoolers with teachers that offer a fun and creative classroom experience? Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten programs are now accepting enrollment applications for the 2022-2023 school year. The program offers Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) for children who are 4 years old. The VPK program is a free prekindergarten program for 4 and 5year-olds who reside in Florida. Participating children must be 4 years of age on or before Sept. 1. Parents can enroll their child in the state’s free, voluntary prekindergarten (VPK) education program that year or wait until the following year when their child is 5. The mission of the Early Learning Coalition of Southwest Florida is to provide early childhood education that will put children on track to be ready for school and success later in life. Voluntary Prekindergarten or VPK gives children a jump start by preparing them

Family News

for school and enhancing their pre-reading, pre-math, language, and social skills. By developing the skills children need to become strong readers and students at an early age, children are more likely to be successful in school. VPK classrooms offer high-quality programs that include high literacy standards, developmentally appropriate curricula, manageable class sizes, and qualified teachers. The school-year program includes 540 hours of instructional time and begins in August. The summer program consists of 300 instructional hours and can begin as early as May 1. How can your child benefit from VPK? • The most important growth and development in the brain happens by the age of 5. • The early years are the learning years. A child’s ability to be attentive and to follow directions emerges in the early years. Structured early learning fosters

these abilities for later success in school and in life. • VPK prepares children to be ready for school. Children who participate in high-quality early childhood education programs develop better language skills, score higher in school-readiness tests, and have better social skills and fewer behavioral problems once they enter school. They are also better prepared for kindergarten, especially in the areas of pre-reading, pre-math, and social skills. • VPK promotes a love of learning in children. VPK enhances what a child learns at home and instills a love of lifelong learning. To apply for VPK, visit www.elcofswfl.org/voluntary-pre-kindergarten-vpk/. There are several private childcare and public-school providers offering VPK programs across Collier, Hendry, Lee, and Glades counties. For information in Collier, call 239-213-1136 and Lee, Hendry, and Glades counties call 239935-6100.

Dental care for babies By Kimberly Nicholson, M.D., FAAP

Baby’s first tooth. Whether it happens at 4 or 14 months (both are normal), there are some common pitfalls to be aware of and some new things that will be added to your day. The newest recommendations from the American Dental Association (ADA) include beginning to brush teeth from the time the teeth first come in. Use a soft toothbrush and toothpaste. The toothpaste should contain fluoride (this is a change from previous recommendations), but use 36 - June 2022

only a rice-grain size smear of toothpaste. We know that babies will not be able to spit any out, so this tiny amount is safe for them to swallow. Your goal is to give the last feeding of the day, then brush teeth, then nothing more to eat or drink until morning (water is okay). By six months of age healthy babies are big enough to make it 8-10 hours without eating. Once you’ve mastered this bedtime brushing routine, add in brushing in the morning for extra credit. In addition to fluoride in the toothpaste, there should be fluoride in the drinking water and also a topical fluoride treatment applied at your child’s pediatrician or dentist every 3-6 months. Most local communities provide a safe and effec-

tive dose of fluoride in the city water. If you have well water, prefer to drink bottled water, or live in an area without fluoridated water (Bonita Springs, Pine Island, Sanibel and Captiva Islands), talk to your child’s pediatrician about how to supplement. As always, ask your pediatrician about these or any other recommendations. Your child’s pediatrician is ready to partner with you so that those baby teeth are just as healthy when the tooth fairy comes as they were when baby got his first tooth! Kimberly Nicholson, M.D., FAAP, is a pediatrician with Physicians’ Primary Care of Southwest Florida with offices throughout Lee County. www.ppcswfl.com Family News

Florida Department of Health

reminds parents of required vaccines before school starts

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County (FDOH Lee) would like to remind and encourage parents of kindergartners, 7th graders, out-of-state, transfer, and college students to make sure their children’s immunizations are up to date before the start of the new school year. All students are required to receive the Tdap booster before entering 7th grade. Children may receive the Tdap booster as early as age 11. Vaccines are free of charge for children through age 18. FDOH Lee will be administering Tdap immunizations at various locations and is accepting appointments for all back-to-school immunizations at our Michigan Avenue office Monday-Friday or during our Saturday clinics. Tdap vaccines will be administered on a first come, first served basis at the fol-

lowing locations: Bike Rodeo and Child Safety Day on Saturday June 25 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Anchor Christian Church, 11651 E. Terry st., Bonita Springs Big Backpack Event on Sunday, July 24 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. at Fort Myers Skatium, 2250 Broadway, Fort Myers Saturday clinics will be held at Florida Department of Health Lee at 3920 Michigan Ave. in Fort Myers on Saturday, July 16 and July 30 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 6 from 8 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling 239-4616100. Additional information on school required immunizations can be found online at lee.floridahealth.gov. Avoid the back-to-school rush and vaccinate your children as soon as possible.

Free autism screening for young children June 17 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening will be held on June 17 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Rd, Suite 102, Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 59 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juveFamily News

nile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838. June 2022 - 37
