LEGOLAND
A getaway built for kids
By Mandy Carter Looking for a spring break getaway that is not too far but full of fun- Legoland is the perfect place if your kids are between the ages of 2 and 12. You can have a great trip at Legoland if you are planning just a one day visit, but I must say that if you can plan it out to be a 2 or 3 day trip with an overnight stay then you will not regret having the extra time to enjoy all they offer. The ultimate playground Many Florida theme parks are geared more to older kids and adults. This is where Legoland in uniquely distinct. From the double-decker carousel to the impressive MiniLand where you wander around Lego replicas of well known US buildings, everyone will be entertained. The kids can train to be Ninjas and even test their driving skills on a boat, place and car. If they are good they can earn their very own license!
You can make a splash Named one of the country’s best outdoor water parks in USA Today’s “10 Best” poll, Legoland Water Park opens March 10th! My kids agree with this poll because they ask about this unique water park constantly. And it is no surprise, because there is a water play area with shorter slides and interactive, giant Duplo animals geared towards children 6 and younger, a hands-on Lego Build-A-Boat attraction complete with a river race, and a giant water structure with slides, water spouts and a 300gallon bucket that dumps water every few minutes. I personally love the

Lego-themed wave pool where the waves are perfect for all ages to enjoy. Keep in mind that admission to Legoland Water Park is $22.50 plus tax in addition to the cost of a same-day theme park ticket. Unfortunately, there are no water park only tickets sold.
Sleep among Legos There are two Legoland Hotels. My kids and I love them both. The Legoland Beach Retreat offers bungalow style rooms with playgrounds galore and a fantastic pool that will make you feel like you are at a beach paradise. The Legoland Hotel emerses their guests in all things Lego from the Disco elevator to the impressive Lego castle play structure in the lobby. You will have found luxury among Legos when you stay at one of these hotels. I have taken my kids here many times, so for detailed tips on how to plan out your day visit my blog at acupful.com/legoland-florida

KID-APPROVED FUN FOOD
Peanut Butter M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies Ingredients: 3 ¼ cups all-purpose flour 1 cup cake flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon coarse sea salt 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, slightly softened 1 ¼ cups packed dark brown sugar 1 ¼ cups granulated sugar 1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 2 eggs 1 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup peanut butter M&Ms
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 375° and line baking sheets with parchment paper. Whisk together flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside. Cream butter and sugars together in the bowl of a stand mixer until light and fluffy. I would not recommend using a hand mixer or trying to make this batter by hand. Add eggs and vanilla, beating until well incorporated. Gradually stir in flour in several additions. Stir in M&Ms and mini chocolate chips. Refrigerate for 2 hours to overnight for the thickest, chewiest cookies. You can also skip this step, but your cookies will spread more. Roll dough balls the size of half a tennis ball and place 1 inch apart on a cookie sheet. Bake 9-10 minutes or until the edges are set but the centers still look underbaked. http://americanheritagecooking.com

Emergency care for your children is close to home
For any parent, wondering where to take a child for emergency care intensifies an already stressful situation. The pediatric emergency department (ED) at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida helps ease the fears of parents and children by providing compassionate, state-of-the art, high-quality emergency care close to home, says Armando Llechu, chief administrative officer. “When the hospital opened in 2017, the emergency department became the only one in Lee County specifically designed to treat children,” Llechu says. “We know going to the emergency department can be scary for children and parents. We want children and families to feel comfortable while they receive care.” Last year, the children’s hospital treated thousands of kids. “Few patients are transferred elsewhere because our staff of more than 75 clinical providers represents many of the key pediatric subspecialties,” Llechu says. “Typically, our patients see a pediatric emergency specialist of some sort within three minutes of their arrival and a physician within 22 minutes of their arrival." Golisano Children’s Hospital has child life specialists who are trained to answer questions and help children feel as comfortable and happy as possible when they visit. “All of our supplies and equipment cater to children,” Llechu says. “That includes our beds and even the furniture in our waiting area. There are also plenty of toys, 48 - March 2018
games, pet therapy, and even a ‘Take a Book’ program where if your child picks up a book to read they get to take it home with them.”
What to Expect When You Visit
• Children and their families enter the emergency department on the second floor of the Golisano Children’s Hospital by driving up a short ramp to a special parking zone. • A registered nurse and official registrar will greet you and your family at the intake desk and gather important information such as your child’s name and age, symptoms, medical history, and anything else a parent or caregiver feels is relevant. • This information ensures your child gets in the right bed and receives the appropriate level of care as quickly as possible. • Next up is the LEAN Care track, an evaluation system that can decrease the time it takes for your child to see a doctor by 50 percent. • Your child follows a path to one of several specialty rooms for procedures and treatment. • Children with life-threatening conditions are treated first, but the goal is for every patient to have a wait time of less than 20 minutes. • To learn more about Golisano Children’s Hospital’s pediatric emergency services, go to www.LeeHealth.org/Kids-ER Family News
Komen Race for the Cure March 3 at Coconut Point On March 3 at 8 a.m., runners, walkers, survivors and their families will take action in the local fight against breast cancer by participating in the annual Susan G. Twenty-five percent supports Komen’s national research and training grants program All donations on your behalf that are received by March 23 will be credited to your fundraising total. The race is a 5K route, which is approximately 3.1 miles. There is also a shorter

route option (approximately 1 mile). You may choose to walk or run either route. If you are unable to walk or run, you can still register and join us on Race day. We are always looking for people to cheer on our runners and walkers. Pets are prohibited from the event, but strollers are permitted. You are not required to fundraise, but they do encourage all participants to fundraise above the entry fee. Just Imagine the IMPACT - If every Race participant raises just $100 in addition to their registration fee, we would bring in an additional $200,000 to support local screening, treatment and educational programs in the community. You can form a team or join a team online. To be considered an official team, you will need 10 or more registered members by the morning of the Race. You can form a team or join a team online. For more information, contact us at 239-498-0016 or Sowen@komenswfl.org. Registration is $35 adult, $15 youth (under 18). Autism screening for young children set for March 9 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on March 9 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at McDonald’s Gulf Coast Town Center, 17800 Ben Hill Griffin Parkway, Estero. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.
