March 2019 - 5
See you later, alligator By Mandy Carter Spring weather is here and it is the perfect time to get outdoors before the scorching summer arrives. My favorite ways to enjoy our beautiful Florida weather is to take a leisurely bike ride. It is even more fun if it is filled with some great nature views. One of the most memorable bike rides I have taken in Florida is the trail through Shark Valley.
Located off the Tamiami Trail, the entrance to Everglades National Park is an hour and a half southeast of Naples and directly 1.5 hours west of Miami. This national park is both eerie and impressive with plenty of opportunities to see a variety of wildlife in their natural environment. Places that feel truly wild are few and far between in the United States, especially Florida – but this trail will not disappoint if you are seeking an authentic view of nature. You will get a chance to create your own one-of-a-kind Everglades eco tour by taking a self-guided bike ride with your family through this unique area of Florida. Shark Valley is a 15-mile paved trail that is ideal for any bicycle, and since the road is flat and free of rough terrain just about anyone can make the ride. A typical ride takes between two and three hours, so I do not recommend taking younger kids as they will tire out before the trail ends. Plan to take many stops because there’s just so much to see, especially all the alligators! I had every intention to count how many alligators I saw but after 30 minutes I gave up as the gators were literally everywhere - sunning on the side of the trail, lurking in the water and even crossing the the road in front of me.
Though I think that biking the trail is the best way to experience Shark Valley within Everglades National Park, you can see it by walking or taking the Shark Valley Tram Tour. You will learn quite a bit from the tram operator on the way out to the tower but you will not get a chance to stop and explore the areas you are driving by. If you want to see alligators up close, then a day biking through Shark Valley in the Everglades of Florida should be on your bucket list. For more information, visit nps.gov/ever Things to know before you go to Shark Valley Under Florida law, any bicyclist under age 16 must wear a helmet. The best riding times are in the morning, when storm chances are smaller and it’s still a little cooler. Do not bother the animals. It is dangerous and illegal to feed or harass wildlife. Admission to Everglades National Park is $25 per car and $8 per person on foot or bike. Parking is limited, so if there’s a wait to enter the park, you can choose to park on the Tamiami Trail and pedal (or walk) in.

Are you fire smart? Smoke alarms save lives—but only if they’re working. Test the smoke alarms in your home monthly and practice fire drills at home. Home fires can start and spread quickly. “That’s why we all need to be careful and educated when it comes to fire safety,” says Sally Kreuscher, Safe Kids coordinator at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Every day in the United States, at least one child dies from a home fire and every hour fires or burns injure about 14 children.” Ninety percent of all fire-related deaths are due to home fires, Sally says. Because home fires spread rapidly, they can leave families as little as two minutes to escape after an alarm sounds. “Create and practice a fire escape plan,” Sally says. “The little bit of planning you take with your family can save lives.” • Create and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room. • Designate one person to get infants and small children out safely. Have a back-up plan for young children just in case the primary person is overcome by smoke. • Smoke is toxic. Teach children to “get low and go” if there is smoke when they are leaving the home. • Practice feeling the door, doorknob and cracks around the door with the back of your hand to see if they are too hot. Help your children practice this step. • Choose a place to meet outside that is a safe distance away from your home. Courtesy Lee Health 46 - March 2019

OB service transfers from Gulf Coast to Health Park In October, Lee Health announced an expansion of obstetrical services and new and renovated OB rooms at HealthPark Medical Center. As part of this expansion, the health system is reminding patients and providers of important dates to keep in mind when their baby is ready to be delivered: - The last day for patients to come to Gulf Coast Medical Center for delivery was Feb. 26 - Patients who go into labor after Feb. 26 should go to HealthPark Medical Center - Patients delivering at Gulf Coast and needing to stay after March 1 will be transferred to HealthPark - The OB service line at Gulf Coast will fully transfer to HealthPark on March 1 - Patients planning to deliver at Cape Coral Hospital are unaffected “This move completes a large-scale renovation project aimed at expanding the OB service line while also creating a more comfortable experience for expectant families. The unit’s proximity to Golisano Children’s Hospital pro-
vides convenient access to the area’s only Level II and Level III neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for high-risk pregnancies, and moving these beds to HealthPark allows us to best meet the needs of our Southwest Florida community,” said Susan Ryckman, RN, MS, Vice President of Patient Care Services, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The health system will now feature 107 OB beds, and all of the newly renovated rooms at HPMC will be fully private with family sleep capabilities. In addition to adding more beds, this move helps meet several other goals of Lee Health’s OB service line. The renovated delivery rooms are located near the unit’s operating suites should they be needed, and the OB Emergency Department and OB triage located in HealthPark’s emergency department is being expanded from three to seven beds, with a completion date of July 1, 2019. For more information about Lee Health’s OB service line, visit www.leehealth.org/obstetrics-gynecology/index.asp.
Autism screening for young
children scheduled for March 15
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on March 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County, 2280 Aaron st. in Port Charlotte. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder,
making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.

Nancy Drew & The Hidden Staircase
After the death of his wife, Carson Drew decides to leave Chicago behind and make a fresh start with his daughter in River Heights. But for 16-year-old Nancy Drew, life in a small town is mighty dull. She longs for excitement, adventure, and the chance to make a difference. Nancy gets that opportunity when she is asked to help solve the ghostly activity at the Twin Elms mansion. Can she help explain the creaking footsteps, exploding lightbulbs and the ominous creature? Is it the handiwork of high-school bully Derek Barnes? Or is it possible that the ghost of original owner Malcolm Colfax is back for revenge? Recruiting her best friends George and Bess, along with local "mean girl" Helen, Nancy Drew is on the case!.
