Sleep training for infants, toddlers By Dana D. Crater, M.D. Is your older infant or toddler waking you in the night? You are not alone. Let’s tackle this problem so you can get the full-night sleep you deserve but seems near impossible. The first rule is that a baby needs to learn to fall asleep in her crib without any assistance from you. If she is used to falling asleep in your arms, when she has natural short awakenings in the night, she won’t know how to fall back asleep 36 - March 2022
without being held. So naturally, she cries out for you. Instead, imagine a world in which she wakes, looks around, and gently falls back to sleep. It is a real possibility, I promise. For naps and bedtime, use the same calming routine. Make sure your child does not fall asleep in your arms. When he is drowsy but not asleep, that is the time to put him in the crib and leave the room. It’s fine to have board books, pacifiers, or a few safe toys in the crib to help the transition. For the first few nights, your child may cry. She may cry for 30 60 minutes. Believe it or not, this is okay. It won’t last. The stronger you can be during this time, the quicker
the path is to a good night's sleep! A baby usually protests the longest the first night, less the next night or two. If you remained strong (this is hard to do, I know!) and didn't reward the crying by going in to pick her up, by the third or fourth night, the crying is down to five minutes or none at all. Free autism screening for young children March 18 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening will be held on March 18 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Pediatric Specialist Office, 15901 Bass Rd, Suite 102, Fort Myers. It is estimated that one in every 59 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. Festival set for March 5
More than 20 acclaimed and bestselling authors are coming to Fort Myers to showcase their books and meet fans at the 23rd annual Southwest Florida Reading Festival on Saturday, March 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will be held on the downtown Fort Myers Regional Library campus located at 2450 First St. The Southwest Florida Reading Festival is a free, all-ages, annual outdoor event. Fans have the opportunity to listen to and meet a diverse line-up of bestselling authors, participate in contests and activities and find the latest and greatest in books and technology. In addition to author appearances and autograph sessions, there will be food truck vendors, storytelling programs, arts and crafts, youth writing contests and a free book for every child and teenager. The lineup of award-winning authors scheduled to attend the next festival includes adult authors Alafair Burke, Tim Dorsey, J.A. Jance, Nathaniel Philbrick, Kate Quinn and Brad Taylor, among others.
