Five ways to explore nature with your kids
By Mandy Carter It’s that time again, when school ends and summer begins — many parents are wondering what can we do with our children to keep their minds active while having fun? It has been shown that spending time in nature has tremendous health benefits, is thought provoking and provides the perfect setting for quality time together. Besides spending time at the nearby beaches, there are many ways to incorporate nature into our children’s lives right here in Lee County. 1. Walk through a botanical garden with no other distractions. Take your kids to a botanical gardens encourage them to lead the way, look at the plants, sit still, and listen. Resist the urge to micromanage your child’s experience. Spend an afternoon at Lakes Park. But bypass the playground and splash to explore the Botanic Garden which expands18 acres within the park. This provides a great opportunity for creative exploration. 2. Seek out natural, untouched spaces to
explore. Find some preserves in the area to visit regularly throughout the year so the kids can see how things change throughout the seasons. Exploring untouched parts of nature gives a perspective about plants and animals that they often do not see. The Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve offers a wonderful way of viewing wildlife while navigating the boardwalk trails through the wetlands. 3. Gaze at the stars. Stargazing offers a deeper, expansive understanding of the Earth’s place in the universe. Allow yourself to think about it, and talk to your children about that wonder. Drive out to the beach or anywhere away from city lights with a blanket and binoculars the lie back and look up! You can also visit the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium to learn about what is going on in the sky this month. 4. See the life cycle of plants, insects and animals up close. Hearing about life cycles at school is much different than seeing it first hand. Spend some time in a garden or at the Butterfly Estates to learn about the life cycle of a butterfly and why it is important to preserve the habitats of animals and insects. 5. Read about nature. Even when you can't go

somewhere, you can still share nature. Check out books from one of the Lee County libraries that are filled with nature and adventure. Here are some of our favorites: Little Cloud by Eric Carle, Swirl by Swirl: Spirals in Nature by Joyce Sidman, From Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons and Owl Moon by Jane Yolen

My Learning Ledger is a kid-friendly financial booklet that is redefining the way children learn economic responsibility. The purpose of this Ledger is to assist adults in introducing the value and responsibility of a dollar. By instilling the expectation of recording financial transactions at a young age, children will intuitively use this skill for the rest of their lives. To start the conversation about finances and begin teaching good money habits, we encourage adults to give their child a weekly allowance. Even if it is just a few dollars a week, having this incentive to keep their Ledger up-to-date will help teach the value of a dollar. As you directly teach your child about money, they can learn about responsibility, decision-making, goal setting, family values, and much more. . www.mylearningledger.com $16.95

Does your child have a food allergy? By Clayton Luz, Lee Health Every year more than 15 million Americans have an allergic reaction to the foods they’ve eaten, including about 4-6% of children, says pediatric allergy specialist Elvin Mendez, M.D. This potentially deadly reaction may affect one in every 13 children (younger than 18 years of age) in the United States. That’s about two children in every classroom. According to Dr. Mendez, an allergic reaction occurs when the body’s immune system does not recognize the food. “Reactions to these foods by an allergic child can range from a tingling sensation around the mouth and lips and hives to death, depending on how severe the allergy is,” he explains. “When a child has symptoms of a food allergy, the reaction may range from mild to life threatening. It can start suddenly, within minutes or up to two hours after the child has eaten the allergy causing food, or food allergen, as it’s called.” A severe allergic reaction with rapid onset, called anaphylaxis (pronounced annafihLACK-sis), can be life threatening, says Dr. Mendez. “This dangerous allergic reaction can involve various organs of the body, including skin, respiratory system, cardiovascular system and gas-

trointestinal tract.” Symptoms of an allergic reaction include: • Skin: hives (itchy red bumps), swelling or redness of face or extremities, sweating • Respiratory: shortness of breath, wheezing • Cardiovascular: fainting or feeling lightheaded, rapid heartbeat • Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps Eight types of food account for more than 90% of allergic reactions in children: milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, soy and wheat. “Allergies to milk, egg, wheat and soy generally resolve in childhood,” Dr. Mendez says. “But allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, fish or shellfish tend to last throughout life.” When Dr. Mendez evaluates a child for a food allergy, he will ask the parent about his or her child’s frequency of symptoms and relationship with eating. Dr. Mendez also asks about family members who may have allergies or conditions like eczema and asthma. Dr. Mendez may perform a skin test in which the child is exposed to food allergens to see if any reddish raised spots (called
wheals) develop on his or her skin. “A positive test to a certain food shows the child’s probably allergic only to that food, but I may do other tests to confirm that, such as blood and food challenge tests,” he says. A blood test checks the blood for an allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibody that floats in the blood stream. “IgE-mediated food allergies cause a child’s immune system to react abnormally when exposed to an allergen,” Dr. Mendez says. “If the skin and/or blood test results indicate a positive reaction, there’s a high probability the child is at risk for a food allergy.” But, if those test results are unclear, Dr. Mendez may do a food challenge test. In this test, a child will be given small but increasing amounts of the potential food allergen to eat while Dr. Mendez watches for signs. The test will be done at his office at Golisano Children’s Hospital, which has immediate access to medical care and medications should an adverse reaction occur during the challenge. Dr. Mendez says that “early identification of childhood allergies can improve your child’s quality of life. The overwhelming majority of children with food allergies lead healthy, satisfying lives.”

Cape Coral Library showcases works of young artists Changing exhibits are featured in the spacious art gallery of the Cape Coral Public Library, which is located at 921 SW 39th Terrace. The latest show will be available for viewing during library business hours from May 10 through June 30 and is dedicated to showcasing creations by young artists. Winning entries from the “Coloring the Earth” contest will be displayed on the alcove walls. The annual environmental art contest for children ages 7 to 12 is organized by Alessia Leathers and is now in its 12th year. The theme this time is “Let’s Protect Our Florida Panthers.” The Friends of the Cape Coral Library sponsors the event and has provided frames so that the children’s artwork can be displayed professionally in a gallery setting. Melany Alvarez’ acrylic paintings on canvas with 3-D touches will be on display in the gallery hall. Melany, a high school level home-schooled teen, is the youngest member of the Cape Coral Art League. She was thrilled when one of the first pieces she ever entered into a league show was sold, and this has further fueled her enthusiasm for painting. Although Melany has taken a few private art lessons, the fact that she is relatively self-taught in this area explains her fresh and forthright artistic approach. She’s a hard-working young lady, who has already been taking general studies at FSW in anticipation of entering college and possibly pursuing a career in physical therapy. Regardless of which path she chooses, Melany no doubt has a bright future. Kindergarten through second grade Fine Arts Students of teacher Elizabeth Olancin at Gulf Elementary School in Cape Coral will exhibit their creations in the large cases in the library’s gallery. Young though they may be, Mrs. Olancin’s students already have previous experience exhibiting their artwork: at the Estero Art show, the Lee County School Board, and Alliance for the Arts. These were created by students age 6 to 9 in the children’s art class taught this winter by Betsy Koscher at the Cape Coral Art League. Paintings and drawings by several of the youngsters will also be hung over the case. Koscher studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, is an accomplished artist herself, and has taught art for 15 years. “Miss Betsy,” as her students call her, has a way of inspiring creativity and motivating kids to paint, draw and produce wonderful pieces. But most of all, they have a lot of fun in her class. The exhibits are sponsored by the Friends of the Cape Coral Library.
