Hours of family fun on Florida’s Treasure Coast By Mandy Carter

Coastal Living dubbed the barrier island of Hutchinson Shores as “America’s Happiest Seaside Town” in 2016. I was excited to have the opportunity to take the kids to the newest hotel on Hutchinson Island, located in the part of Florida known as the Treasure Coast. It takes about three hours to drive to this beautiful island from Southwest Florida, but worth the trip if you are looking for a relaxing, family-friendly getaway to a quaint beach town. Mom and Dad can enjoy the atmosphere while also enjoying the luxurious styled amenities fit for couples and families alike.

Where to stay:

The first new beach resort to be built on Hutchinson Island in 20 years, Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa opened in 2017. This beautiful hotel features two oceanfront restaurants, two swimming pools, and a signature spa. I was surprised at how family friendly this luxurious beachfront hotel is. From the kid menu they color in the restaurant to the free cookies each night and lots of beach toys available to play with, no kid will feel un-welcomed.

What to Do:

Visit the Florida Oceanographic Society Coastal Science Center for nature walks, 6 - May 2018

stingray feedings and interactive learning in the beautiful outdoors. You will be able to view jewel-laden crosses, necklaces, solid gold pieces, and even hold one of the historic gold bars from the shipwreck at the Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum and the little ones can spend hours expanding their imagination at Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast. This museum, though small, is a great place to get out of the sun and explore the creative side of a community. My kids especially loved the gigantic pirate ship where they launched cannon balls and the Publix grocery store where Kara shopped while Conner was stocked the shelves and checked out customers.

Where to Eat:

Of course, Drift Restaurant at the hotel is a delicious and easy option for breakfast, lunch and dinner (poolside or restaurant style), but I also suggest venturing offsite, to not only save money but get some local taste. We enjoyed a fresh lunch at Fruits & Roots Juice Bar + Vegan Cafe.

Teen artists, performers compete May 18 at the Davis Art Center Southwest Florida young artists and performers are invited to take part in Teen Talent Night, produced by the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center Junior Board. On Friday, May 18, teens 13 17 can enter visual art, dance, film, music or theater categories for a chance to win cash prizes. Participate for a chance to win, or come out to support SWFL young talent. The Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center established a Junior Board to provide young adults with an opportunity to gain experience serving on a non-profit board. Each year, the Junior Board is given a budget and tasked with developing events for the community. The Junior Board meets regularly, plans events, and creates an action plan to put on the event. This extracurricular initiative serves multiple purposes: it allows Junior Board

members to fulfill volunteer hours required for scholarships; it helps members gain experiences related to teamwork, planning, and implementing projects developed; and it provides the members an opportunity to gain experience serving on a managerial board. This competitive showcase features teen talent in visual art, music, theater, and film. Teens can enter these talent categories for a chance to win up to $600 in cash prizes. Plus, contestants and attendees can enjoy food, music, raffles, and so much more. It’s free to enter the contest, and only $5 to attend. Child life specialists use play to prep patients for procedures Rachel Wiik’s 5-year-old daughter, Caylin, was afraid to visit the doctor. Previous experience had left her feeling scared. When an otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist) ordered a CT scan through the Pediatric Sedation Unit at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida to evaluate her right ear, Rachel Wiik sought the help of certified child life specialist Kristin Brown. Child life specialists (CLS) are child development experts who teach kids about the hospital while helping them and their families cope. They work in the outpatient and inpatient units at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “Our goal is to make the hospital easier and more comfortable for kids,” Brown says. “They may not understand what’s going to happen to them in this new environment, which can be scary for them.” Child life specialists use play to help children relax during their stay in a health care setting. “Play can teach a patient about their upcoming procedure or a new diagnosis,” Brown says. “It normalizes the hospital environment by providing distraction during procedures. Play also tells us how well patients understand what is happening 56 - May 2018

and their ability to cope.” Studies show that children who are prepared for medical procedures have less fear and anxiety. That promotes cooperation during procedures and helps them adjust to future medical experiences. On the day of the procedure, Brown met with Rachel Wiik and Caylin beforehand. Brown played with Caylin for about 25 minutes to build rapport with her, then used an iPad to show the five-year-old and her mother pictures of a child going through the CT process. “We’ll walk the child through all steps of the procedure so there are no surprises,” Brown says. “We try to relate the procedure back to something children

are familiar with.” Brown told Caylin that getting a CT scan was like having her picture taken by a camera, but a much bigger camera that took pictures of the inside of her head instead of the outside. “Caylin was scared going into the procedure,” recalls Rachel Wiik, who remained with her daughter, along with Brown, during the scan. “When we got her in the examination room, she began to cry a little. Kristin got on the CT table first, lie down and let the technician move the bed with her on it. After seeing Kristin do that, Caylin got on the table, keeping her eyes on Kristin, listening to what she was explaining as the scanner took her pictures.” Rachel Wiik says her daughter’s health care team from the sedation unit to the radiology unit, and Brown, of course, was focused on Caylin’s coping and comfort level, which made the experience less stressful. “Caylin did really well,” Rachel Wiik says. “I was relieved because I didn’t know how she was going to act in such a challenging environment. The child life specialist program made a huge difference.” Family News

musical awards at BB Mann Hall

The 10th Annual High School Musical Awards will take place Monday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at the Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall at FSW in Fort Myers. In 2008, Scott Saxon, general manager of the Barbara B. Mann Performing Art Hall at FSW, started the High School Musical Awards. He wanted to recognize the students who put on these local school productions — whether they’re acting, playing in the orchestra, building the sets, making the costumes or helping out backstage. The students spend months working on their productions, rehearsing songs and dance steps, designing and painting the sets, sewing the costumes and doing everything else it takes to put on a show. Most schools start working on their productions in the fall and rehearse all year until they present their shows in March or April - including after school and weekends. “They put a lot of work into it,” Saxon says. “They rehearse every day. They practice every day. They need to be celebrated, too. It’s our local version of Broadway’s Tony Awards.” Here are this year’s participants:

Heathers: The Musical at Florida Rep Education

The long-awaited Florida Rep Education Conservatory production of Heathers: The Musical officially opens May 23 at the Historic Arcade Theatre and runs through May 27. Conservatory audiences will hear songs such as “Candy Store,” “Dead Girl Walking,” and “Beautiful” sung once again on stage by the familiar student faces of Westerberg High. This hilarious, heartfelt, and homicidal rock musical tells the story of Westerberg High and the rule of a shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing trio: Heather, Heather and Heather, the most popular but cruelest girls of the school. But misfit Veronica Sawyer rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and mysterious new kid, JD, who plans to put the Heathers in their

place – six feet under. With its moving love story, laugh-outloud comedy, and unflinching look at the joys and anguish of high school, Heathers puts perspective on the high-school experience and what’s really important in life. The cast is led by Nayda Baez as the intelligent misfit Veronica Sawyer, Brice Kingsley as the dark and brooding JD, Athena Kelley as Heather Chandler, Chloe Tsai as Heather Duke and Cat Westley as Heather McNamara. Education director Kody C. Jones directs the production. Priced at $10 with a valid student ID and $20 for adults, general admission tickets are available at www.FloridaRepEducation.org and through the Florida Repertory Theatre box office at 239-332-4488.
