A full day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios By Mandy Carter What do cars, toys and snow have in common? They are all part of newer movie attractions at Disney World. Movies are magical, and who does magic better than Disney? That’s why Disney Hollywood Studios is where entertainment magically comes alive and enthralls the entire family. Many parents think of Hollywood Studies as a “half day park,” if you’re traveling with preschoolers who are too short to ride Rock ‘N Roller Coaster or too scared of storm troopers. But they are wrong! From Andy’s Backyard in the new Toy Story Land to snow falling in Arendelle, your entire family will wonder how you’d ever skipped out on a wonderful day at Hollywood Studios. A look at the new attractions even the youngest family members will enjoy: Toy Story Land Tinker Toys frame this 11-acre playful land where real green army men march around, keeping order. Older kids and parents also love this new addition to Hollywood Studios. Toy Story Mania is our favorite! This fun arcade-style shooting game is simple enough that even preschoolers and moms can end up being high scorers. With rides for kiddos who measure 31” and 39” tall, Toy Story Land is becoming a family favorite.
For the First Time in Forever: A Frozen Sing-Along Celebration This new attraction is a combination of live action and movie clips. A humorous sing-along that gets the entire family singing to all the top Frozen hits. Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy This Cars-themed show in the Sunset Showcase theater, is a first of its kind that puts you in the middle of the imaginative Cars universe. It is a 10 minute show where Lightning McQueen takes center stage in front of a 17-foot-tall wraparound screen that stretches more than 200 feet end to end. Coming soon ... And on the horizon, a new attraction is coming to the now-closed Chinese Theatre, Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railroad. Riders will step through the movie screen to experience the wacky world of a Mickey Mouse cartoon short. It will be the first ever Mickey-themed ride-through attraction. If it has been a few years since you spent the day at Hollywood Studios, one of the Walt Disney World theme parks, then you may want to consider planning a summer trip to check out all the changes - especially if you have young kids.

Annual letter carrier
food drive May 11 As summer approaches and school will be out, the nation’s largest single-day food drive, Stamp Out Hunger will be held on Saturday, May 11. This is the one day when letter carriers collect non-perishable food that has been left by mailboxes. The food collected in Lee County will be distributed through participating food banks in the county. All food collected in food drives is distributed to participating agencies at no cost. Virtually any kind of food may be donated in unopened, nonbreakable containers. Items especially in need are peanut butter, tuna, rice, beans, canned meats,
fruits, vegetables and soups. Volunteers are needed to both help letter carriers collect the food and to help sort the food once it has been collected. Volunteers wishing to assist letter carriers with their preliminary food sorting should contact the Harry Chapin Food Bank, 239-3347007; those wishing to volunteer to assist drivers in picking up food should contact Kim Berghs at the United Way, 239-822-8415. Additional information about the letter carrier food drive and early food drop-off may be obtained by contacting George Sciascia, Letter Carriers' Food Drive coordinator at gsciascia@comcast.net or 239-218-1147.
Girl requests animal shelter donations over birthday gifts
Seven year old Alia SteeleKalra opted for guests at her recent birthday party to bring pet supplies instead of personal gifts. She collected over 200 pounds of pet food plus toys and treats to donate to the Gulf Coast Humane Society in Fort
Myers. Alia’s parents Roxanne Steele & Dr. Ajay Kalra are so proud of her selflessness and willingness to give to others. “Alia has such a big heart and we hope her actions inspire others to give on their special day as well.”
Sizzle Restaurant Week May 30 - June 12 From Cape Coral to Marco Island and everywhere tasty in between, Sizzle SWFL Restaurant Week is a semi-annual charity driven promotion that celebrates dining out at an affordable price in both Lee and Collier Counties. The event is produced and owned by Guy Clarke & Rafael J. Feliciano, cofounders of Food Idea Group. Sizzle SWFL Restaurant Week 2019 Spring Edition is May 30 through June 12 and features more than 50 participating restaurants offering amazing three-course, prix-fixe dinner menus with special upgrades and deals starting at just $26 or $36. (Some are offering twocourse lunches for $16 or $21 as the event continues to grow.) All the menus will be online at www.SizzleSWFL.com as the organizers receive them. “Your participation matters! The best thing about Restaurant Week is that $1 from every Restaurant Week meal (lunch or dinner) sold will be donated to the Sizzle SWFL FGCU Food & Beverage Scholarship! The scholarship supports local Southwest Florida high school 10 - May 2019
graduates that are enrolled in the FGCU Resort & Hospitality Management program, with both financial and non-financial assistance,” says Guy Clarke. With over 60,000 Restaurant Week meals sold per year (and growing), this scholarship will have a profound impact on our local High School graduates, which in-turn helps our local restaurants be able to hire more qualified staff. The overall goal of Restaurant Week is to encourage people to visit the best local restaurants during a normally slow time of year and help expose the population of Lee, Collier and the surrounding counties to our amazing SWFL restaurants. A secondary goal is to get people to try new restaurants they have never visited. Here’s how to participate: 1. Go to www.SizzleSWFL.com 2. Look through all the menus and pick a few restaurants to try out 3. Make your reservations. (Not always needed but highly recommended) 4. When you arrive, order from the Restaurant Week prix fixe menu. Family News

Pediatric clinics in Bonita Springs, Cape Coral, Fort Myers, and Lehigh Acres are the first pediatric outpatient offices in Florida to receive platinum-level status, the highest level of recognition the coalition awards. Each location had to meet specific criteria that were designed to improve asthma care and outcomes for patients. Florida Asthma Coalition (FAC) recognizes outpatient centers that create a safe and healthy environment for patients with asthma. The coalition recognizes the role hospitals play in caring for patients with asthma and developed the “Asthma-Friendly” hospital recognition by collaborating with administrative, clinical, and supportive partners across the state. The steps taken by the hospitals to earn the recognition will help reduce unnecessary hospital visits and readmissions, and improve overall health outcomes. The Lee Health Child Development Centers also received the platinum-level “asthma-friendly” recognition for Child Care Centers. Last year, the FAC also designated Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida as an “asthma-friendly” hospital. Asthma is a chronic (long-term) lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways, causing recurring attacks of symptoms, such as wheezing and coughing. Inflammation makes the airways sensitive to various allergens and irritants in the environment, including mold, dust mites, animal dander, pollen, diesel emissions, and tobacco smoke. For more information, call 239-343-9888. To reach Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, call 239-343-KIDS (5437). Lee Physician Group Primary Care Pediatric Clinics • 4751 S. more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.

A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, Aladdin is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future. The film stars Will Smith as the Genie; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as the Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia; Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders; and Numan Acar as Hakim. “Aladdin” is produced by Dan Lin, p.g.a., and Jonathan Eirich, p.g.a., with Marc Platt and Kevin De La Noy serving as executive producers.
In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weirdness is celebrated, strangeness is special and beauty is embraced as more than meets the eye. After traveling to the other side of a mountain, Moxy and her UglyDoll friends discover Perfection -- a town where more conventional dolls receive training before entering the real world to find the love of a child. Florida Repertory Theatre’s Education Department announced the opening of Disney’s Newsies as part of its popular Conservatory Program. Playing in the Historic Arcade Theatre May 10 - 12 and May 15 19, the musical sensation features a professional director and creative team and an all-star cast of young people from across Southwest Florida. Florida Rep's Conservatory Program gives young artists who want to pursue theatre an introduction to the professional world with a real-life regional theatre experience that culminates with a nine-performance professional run over two weekends. The popular conservatory program began in 2011 and recently produced acclaimed productions of A Chorus Line, Heathers: The Musical, School of Rock and Metamorphoses, among many others. The program will produce Spring Awakening as its summer offering this August. Disney’s Newsiestells the story of Jack Kelly, the charismatic newsboy who leads a band of teenaged newsies in turn-of-the-century New York City. When the titans of publishing raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions and fight for what is right.
The cast features a record number of 49 teens from across Southwest Florida, many of whom are veterans of the Conservatory and Florida Rep's educational programs, along with others are making their Florida Rep Conservatory debuts. The cast includes Sawyer True, Jesse Massari, Matteo Occhino, Brice Kingsley, Gigi Lieze-Adams, Sophie Hagan, Carson Maschmeier, Chase Clark, Christian Miller, Christian Dinsmore, Sophia Gurule, Taylor Caruso, Harvey Evans, Hannah Atkinson, Caleb Edwards, Matthew Eakins, Keehnon Jackson, Bryce Hagan, Scotty Wells, Wedler Lordeus, Daniel Boggs, Luke Danni, Annalise Moeggenberg, Taylor Myers, Haley Adkins, Alyssa Mehrberg, Violet Mann, Emily Longoria, Abbie Ciabaton, Annabelle Crater, Ella Stroud, Alyssa Santiago, Marianna Young, Luccia Lieze-Adams, Macy Magas, Katherine Schwartzel, Kayci Suskind, Maddie Barker, Celia Bevington, Sophie Cruz, Gabrielle Germani, Sophia Condit, Michael Shelley, Grace Ryan, Hannah Cruz, and Shennan Nelson. Tickets are $10 for students and $20/$25 for adults and are available at www.FloridaRepEducation.org and through the box office at 239-332-4488. Performances are May 10-12, 15 - 17 at 7 p.m. and May 11, 12 & 19 at 2 p.m.
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL
Corteo at Hertz Arena in July
Corteo, the latest and most enchanting Cirque du Soleil’s arena production is now touring in North America. The show will visit Estero at the Hertz Arena from July 17 to 21 for a limited run of seven performances. This unique production, directed by Daniele Finzi Pasca, first premiered in Montreal under the Big Top in April 2005. Since then, the show has been a great success and has amazed 8 million people in 19 countries on four continents. Corteo, which means cortege in Italian, is a joyous procession, a festive parade imagined by a clown. The show brings together the passion of the actor with the grace and power of the acrobat to plunge the audience into a theatrical world of fun, comedy and spontaneity situated in a mysterious space between heaven and earth. The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo Family News
through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality. The concept and disposition of the stage bring the audience in a theatrical atmosphere like never seen before in Cirque du Soleil arena shows. The set curtains, inspired by the Eiffel Tower, and the central curtains, which were hand painted, give a grandiose feel to the stage. This sets the tone for the poetry of Corteo. The cast of Corteo includes 52 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from all around the world. Originally composed of 20 street performers in 1984, Cirque du Soleil completely reinvented circus arts and went on to become a world leader in artistic entertainment. Established in Montreal, the Canadian organization has brought wonder and delight to over 190 million spectators with 42 productions that have taken place in close to 450 cities in 60 countries. Cirque du Soleil currently has over 4,000 employees, including 1,400 artists, from nearly 50 countries. In 2018 alone, 20 shows are being presented simultaneously throughout the world. Tickets for Corteo are available now online. For more information, visit www.cirquedusoleil.com/corteo. May 2019 - 57
