Overweight children: An epidemic that is threatening our future health By R. Nathan Landefeld, M.D., FAAP Over one third of America’s children are considered overweight or obese. Being overweight can contribute to impaired selfesteem. If left unchecked, obesity can cause serious health issues like high blood pressure, vascular disease, liver disease, cancer, and diabetes. The first step in dealing with an overweight child can be a visit to the child’s pediatrician. While metabolic and endocrine problems contribute to only a tiny percentage of overweight children, it’s important to rule them out. They can also 44 - May 2022
help formulate a plan for weight loss. Here are a few lifestyle changes that can help: 1) Rethink the proportions as you fill your plates! Most of the plate should be covered with veggies and fruits. Build meals based on salads. 2) Eat high fiber foods! Fiber fills you up without being turned into body fat. Buy high fiber cereals, breads, brown rice, and whole grain pasta as your carbohydrate sources. 3) Many overweight children drink a large portion of their calories in the form of soda, juices, sports drinks, and sweet tea. These can be substituted with water, unsweetened drinks, and skim milk. 4) Eating meals together as a family is important. Family meals are associated with children eating more fruits and vegetables. This can
also help children learn appropriate portions. 5) Remember to support your child through your own eating habits – it’s difficult for a child to eat a snack of apples when you are eating ice cream! 6) Encourage your overweight child to be more physically active. Easiest thing to do is limit TV, video games, and computer time. Encourage children to join a sport, go to a pool, ride bikes, or simply go for a brisk walk. The key to effective weight control is small changes over long periods of time, so keep activities fun and varied so as not to lose interest. R. Lions offer free children’s eye clinic May to August The Florida Lions Eye Clinic will again offer its Summer Children’s Eye Clinic the first Wednesday of each month, May through August, at its Bonita Springs location. The first Children’s Eye Clinic will be offered Wednesday, May 4. The clinic offers free eye care to low income Florida residents with no medical insurance. Pediatric ophthalmologist Dr. Shauna Berry will be available to perform examinations to the scheduled children on those days. “Being a working mom, I understand the difficulties of weekday appointments,” said Olivia Pena, FLLEC’s clinic supervisor. “Holding these clinics helps us reach more kids in need of eye care. Plus, it all happens in a kidfriendly environment.” Experts say one in four school-aged children have undetected vision problems. If left untreated, some of these problems can cause permanent vision loss.
Children learn best, and are positioned to succeed, when they can see clearly and are fully engaged in class. “The earlier we detect and treat vision problems in children, the easier they are to cure, and this allows our children to do better in school and life,” said Dr. Howard Freedman, a volunteer doctor and one of the founders of FLLEC. “We want to give kids the Gift of Sight!” The Clinic’s leadership team believes healthy eyesight is a basic need, essential to perform some of the most ordinary functions in daily life. With poor eyesight, children's academic performance is hindered, and childhood disorders may continue to affect health and well being throughout their adult years. The Florida Lions Eye Clinic is located at 10322 Pennsylvania Ave., Bonita Springs. For more info, call 239-498-3937. Learn more about the Florida Lions Eye Clinic at www.fllec.org

nile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well.
