Thankful

ROCKS

My middle daughter, Riley, loves rocks. She can find the beauty in any rock. Bike rides with her are long because she jumps off her bike every time she sees a rock that is special to her. This month, I have a project I think my kids will enjoy. Every day, until Thanksgiving Day, I’m going to have them write on a rock something they are thankful for. When I say everyday, I really mean we will most likely get behind, and we will do several in one day to catch up. That’s beside the point. Anyway, they can decorate them however they want. We will collect them all in a Mason jar. On Thanksgiving Day, we will pull them out of the jar, and they can share their rocks. I asked my kids and some of their friends to share something they are thankful for. Here are their responses: Everything - Sadie, age 8 Grandma Kathy - Riley, age 5 My bunny, Niblets, house and

chickens - Lillian, age 8 Bike rides with my mom, my papa, Nini and Gus - Roan, age 3 My PW50 motorcycle and the track my papa made - Gus, age 6 My friends and family - Wyatt, age 10 My mom and dad - Ryder, age 7 My family - Connor, age 8 Toys R Us - Levi, age 4 Food, friends, family and my home - Victor, age 8 Thankful to be alive - Oliver, age 6 My mommy - Emelia, age 5 My sister - Phoebe, age 8 A good life - Cadia, age 7 Guitar lessons - Colven, age 10 Fun - Mac, age 5 My mommy - Matthew, age 7 My family - Jonathan, age 9 Aren’t they the sweetest?! What are your kids thankful for? Post in the comment section on my blog at www.leefamilynews.net

Festival of Trees Nov. 30 - Dec. 4 Santa’s Block party set for Dec. 3

Goodwill’s annual Festival of Trees is returning to the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center for its tenth year. The festival of Trees, a holiday tradition in the Fort Myers River District, is the signature event of The Southwest Florida Goodwill Foundation. This year’s festival opens to the public on Nov. 30 and runs until Dec. 4. Admission to view the trees is $2, with children under 12 attending free. The festival displays more than 20 lavishly decorated trees, designed by businesses and individuals in the community. Festival visitors will be able to acquire raffle tickets throughout the Festival for a chance to win one (or more) of the trees, most of which are valued at more than $750. Tickets are available for a suggested minimum donation of $10. “We experimented with a tree raffle last year, and the response was overwhelming. Everyone wanted a ticket,” says Kirsten O’Donnell, director of public relations and marketing for Goodwill. “This year, every tree will be up for raffle, with the exception of our signature Teddy Bear Tree.” This year’s Festival of Trees will see other changes, says O’Donnell. A special preview party will provide a sneak peek of the trees, and also include a wine tasting with food pairings. The preview will be held Nov. 29, with tickets available at

12

NOVEMBER 2016

www.GoodwillTrees.com. “The Preview Party takes the place of our Tux & Trees Gala,” explains Sue Hegarty, community relations coordi-

nator for Goodwill. “We’ll also have a silent auction and also a live auction of the Very Beary Christmas tree.” More new additions to the festival include an Ugly Sweater Party and Contest on Nov. 30, and a Paint Your Own Tree party with Painting with a Twist on Dec. 1. Return visitors to the festival will enjoy the River District Holiday Stroll and Art Walk on Friday, Dec. 2, and the popular Santa’s Block Party on Dec. 3. Santa’s Block Party includes Brunch with Santa, hosted by the Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center (www.sbdac.com), a holiday vendor showcase, and a Children’s Holiday Workshop that includes games, crafts, movies, and more. Tickets will be available online and at the door. Last year, the Festival of Trees raised more than $78,000 to support Goodwill’s mission of helping people in the Southwest Florida community by providing life-changing opportunities to employment and independence. In 2015, Goodwill helped 42,000 Southwest Floridians in need to become more independent. For the full Festival of Trees schedule and ticket information, visit www.GoodwillTrees.com. The Festival of Trees Sidney & Berne Davis Art Center 2301 First Street, Fort Myers November 30 – December 4

The Festival of Trees is a beautiful showcase of festive trees decked out in unique decorations. Each year, our decorators find more unusual ways to adorn their trees. Candy, teddy bears, and even paper dolls have rested upon pine branches. Others are decorated traditionally, with ornaments, ribbons, and bows. Still more are ornamented with more unconventional fare, like power tools, dog toys, and sports memorabilia. Will Santa be There? Of course! You can see Santa at Santa’s Block Party, on Saturday, December 3 with fun for the whole family! www.tuxandtrees.com

Pediatric headache signs similar to adults’

By JL Watson, Lee Health Adults who complain of a headache can take overthe-counter medication to find relief. Children who experience this pain may not be able to articulate their feelings enough for a parent to understand what is happening. “There are a lot of similarities between headaches in children and adults,” says pediatric neurologist Natalie Gillson, M.D. “The biggest difference is the description of the pain and duration. Often, adult headaches are classified by the type of pain and duration of pain. However, this is difficult for most children to describe and keep track of. Also when it comes to migraine, the biggest difference is location. Headache pain can occur in any region of the head and often ‘all over.’” Signs and symptoms of headaches in children can include:

40

NOVEMBER 2016

• Poor sleep • Stress • Dehydration • Caffeine • Excessive computer or screen time • Hormonal changes during puberty The “red flag” headache symptoms – which suggest that the headache could be due to a structural/anatomical cause include waking up Dr. Natalie Gillson in the morning with headache, headache that is worse with lying down, headaches that wake children up from sleep; and headaches that worsen with bearing down, coughing or

sneezing. “Mostly, I see that healthy lifestyle changes can make the biggest impact on headache frequency,” Dr. Gillson says. “Improving sleep, reducing stress, increasing water intake, reducing electronic screen time, exercising and eliminating caffeine can all help. Over-the-counter Tylenol and ibuprofen with a full glass of water and rest is typically the best place to start when treating a child’s headache.” Dr. Gillson warns parents not to overuse analgesics to treat headaches in children. “Most parents don’t know that if you use over-the-counter analgesics too often it can lead to ‘medication overuse headache’ and more headaches,” she says. “This cycle of rebound headaches is difficult to treat and causes chronic mild headaches to persist for weeks to months. More than two doses of medication a week for more than two to three weeks is too much.”

Flu season arrives; vaccines recommended Cooler weather and shorter days mark the transition from summer to fall and it’s also a sign that flu season is here. It is critical that all Floridians do their part to prevent getting seasonal flu and spreading it to others by getting the flu vaccine as early as possible. Flu strains change from year to year so it is important to get the flu shot this year even if you got one last year. The annual flu vaccine is safe and remains the most effective way to protect yourself and your loved ones. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older, including pregnant women. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for your body to develop protection against the flu so get your flu shot early, preferably before Halloween. This year, the Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention only recommends people get injectable flu shots. Nasal spray vaccine is not recommended for this flu season because of concerns about its effectiveness. In addition to protecting yourself, receiving the flu vaccine helps prevent the flu virus from spreading to our most vulnerable populations, including older adults, pregnant women, children ages newborn to five and people who have existing medical conditions like asthma. Flu vaccines are free for children 6 months old through 18 years old at the Florida Department of Health’s Immunization clinic, 3920 Michigan Ave., Fort Myers. Clinic hours are 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 1-2:30 p.m. Friday. Appointments

are available by calling 239-461-6100. Flu vaccine for adults is $30 -$50. It is also essential to practice good hygiene by properly and frequently wash your hands to help prevent the spread of seasonal flu. Make it a habit to clean and disinfect commonly used surfaces in your home, school or office. You can take additional steps to ward off the flu by coughing or sneezing into a tissue or your elbow and avoiding touching your face. Remember to help keep Florida #FluFree this season by getting you and your loved ones vaccinated against the flu. For more information about the flu and where you can get the flu shot this year, visit www.FluFreeFlorida.com.

Rededication event Oct. 5 celebrates a century of caring State and local elected officials; community partners, current and former administrators, physicians, staff, volunteers and patients celebrated the 100th anniversary of Lee Memorial Health System at a special event Oct. 5. Lisa Sgarlata, chief administrative officer of Lee Memorial Hospital, served as MC for the affair, held on the grounds of the hospital. The event featured Board of Directors chairman Sanford Cohen, M.D., who shared the health system’s rich history and the role the community played in its success. Jim Nathan, president, recognized the people—the doc-

tors, employees, volunteers, community partners and patients—who helped the system grow and evolve to meet the needs of the community. Reverend Cynthia Brasher, Lee Health system director of spiritual services, led a rededication of services. Florida Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto, and other legislators and city councils commemorated the anniversary with a host of proclamations and resolutions. While the event celebrated the past, it also ushered in the future of health care delivery as the health system unveiled plans for the next century of caring as Lee Health.

than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.

Moana

Opens Nov. 18 - rated PG-13

Opens Nov. 23 - rated PG

The year is 1926, and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident, were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt's fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and NoMaj worlds. This British fantasy action drama film is directed by David Yates and written by J. K. Rowling (in her screenwriting debut) and is based on Rowling's book of the same name. A spin-off and a prequel of the Harry Potter film series, the film will be the first instalment of a series of five films.

For centuries, the greatest sailors in the world masterfully navigated the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, 3,000 years ago, their voyages stopped for a millennium – and no one knows exactly why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes “Moana,” a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who is inspired to leave the safety and security of her island on a daring journey to save her people. Inexplicably drawn to the ocean, Moana (voice of Auli i Cravalho) convinces the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson) to join her mission, and he reluctantly helps her become a wayfinder like her ancestors who sailed before her. Together, they voyage across the open ocean on an action-packed adventure, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills her quest and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
