Take a trip to paradise to chill during the stressful holiday season By Mandy Carter The holidays are upon us, which means your schedule might get hectic - filled with holiday parties, family get-togethers, shopping, and baking. This time of year can be stressful, so take some time out for a quick relaxing trip to a nearby paradise of fun. The Margaritaville Beach Resort in Hollywood, Fla., is only a two-hour drive from Southwest Florida but will feel like you have arrived in a Caribbean paradise. This 349room hotel is inspired by Jimmy Buffet lyrics, setting a casual, coastal theme. The rooms are bright, spacious, and comfortable. The entire property makes you feel like you are on an island somewhere. Water fun: Beautiful beach, 3 pools, SUP and a Flow Rider Guests at the Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort have free use of beach chairs and an umbrella on prime beach space in front of the hotel. The three pools are also only for guests staying at the hotel, so no worries about overcrowding or no lounge chairs. One pool is a perfect spot a fun day of swimming for the entire family because it has a waterfall and slide while being located right next to the

Landshark Bar and Grill. The Flow Rider is available for both hotel guests and the public. Across the street, next to the 5 O’Clock Somewhere Bar where you can rent kayaks and paddle boards to explore the mangroves of the Intercoastal waterways. Dining for all: no need to leave the resort with all the food options onsite The dining options for this size resort is impressive with eight distinct bar and restaurants on property. Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville Restaurant, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers live entertainment

most nights. The two-story poolside LandShark Bar & Grill is popular for both guests and beach-goers. There is the License to Chill Bar located on the 11th floor terrace, which offers an incredible view of Hollywood Beach and reserved for hotel guests only. The JWB Prime Steak and Seafood is an upscale dining concept that is located within the main lobby and reservations are recommended for this dinner option. Other food and drink options include the Lone Palm Beach Bar, Floridays Airstream Cafe and the Margaritaville Coffee Shop.

For more information about this nearby piece of paradise or to book your stay, visit www.margaritavillehollywoodbeachresort.com

Saint Michael students raise money and awareness for breast cancer prevention

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, the students at Saint Michael School in Fort Myers raised more than $400 by wearing pink to school. Each child brought $1 to school in exchange for the opportunity to wear pink rather than their school uniform. The whole school came together that afternoon for special

pep rally. With the gymnasium decorated in pink and the students all dressed in pink, it was a “pink out.” The volleyball team even sported pink volleyball jerseys purchased by parents of the athletes. All of the money raised is being donated to Partners for Breast Cancer Care. Every little bit helps.

Kid Happy Thanksgiving Teepee Dirt Cups

www.forkandbeans.com

Thanksgiving Stuffing/Mashed Potato Cupcakes www.icanteachmychild.com Muffin Tin Apple Pies

For Stuffing: For the Mashed Potatoes: 2 Tbsp. dairy free butter 2 potatoes, peeled, washed & cubed ½ yellow onion, chopped 2 Tbsp. butter 3 celery ribs, thinly sliced unsweetened dairy free milk 2 cloves garlic, minced ½ tsp. sea salt for taste 1 tsp. dried basil 1 tsp. dried thyme Other ingredients: 1 tsp. dried rosemary Favorite gravy ½ tsp. sea salt ¼ c. fresh parsley, minced 5 cups of cubed bread 1 c. vegetable broth ¼ c. aquafaba (the liquid brine from a can of chickpeas)

Candy Pretzel Turkey Bites

Directions:

Fill a pot with water and bring to a rapid boil. Add the cubed potatoes and allow to boil over medium-low heat for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are soft. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Grease a muffin tin with light oil spray. In a large skillet, heat up the butter until melted over medium-high heat and add the onions and celery. Allow to soften for a few minutes. Add the garlic, herbs and salt and saute another minute. Place the cubed bread inside the skillet and mix around to season. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring often. Add the vegetable broth to coat fully. Remove from heat and allow to slightly cool enough to touch. Using an electric mixer, froth up with the chickpea brine over medium speed until soft peaks form (will take no more than 1 minute). Fold into the stuffing until evenly combined. Distribute the stuffing mix evenly into 8 of the cups of the muffin tin. Be sure to gently yet firmly press the stuffing down into the muffin tin mold. Bake for 20 minutes or until the tops become nicely browned. Allow to cool slightly before removing. While the stuffing is baking, drain the water from the potatoes, returning them in the pot and add butter. Mashed with the back of a fork just to break up the potatoes. Add unsweetened dairy free milk ¼ c. at a time until your potatoes are smooth. Depending on what brand/kind you use, this will vary which is why it's important to do it ¼ c. at a time. Make sure that they are still stiff enough to hold up on top of the stuffing cupcakes. Add the sea salt to flavor to your liking.

Seasonal flu vaccination can make a healthier you By Clayton Luz, Lee Health

As the winter season approaches, Southwest Florida enters flu season and becomes a haven for warm-weather seekers. Ojash Raval, D.O., a family medicine physician with Convenient Care, says the best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated. “Florida is a special state where people come from all over the world during the winter months to escape the cold,” Dr. Raval says. “But it also brings more people carrying different, localized flu strains to Florida. Getting a flu shot protects you from many of them.” For infants, toddlers and seniors, seasonal flu vaccination can help prevent hospitalizations. “When most of us get the flu, we feel ill for several days and get over the flu bug,” Dr. Raval says. “This is not always the case for the very young and seniors. Every year the flu bug puts a lot of people in the hospital.”

32

NOVEMBER 2017

Dr. Raval recommends vaccination for anyone 6 months of age and older. “Usually, the vaccine is available in October,” he says. “As soon as it is available, you should get vaccinated. It takes a couple of weeks for your body to create the immunity against the flu. So, the earlier the better.” Prevent the flu with good health habits: • Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them. • Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. • Keep your hands clean. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Curious George & the Golden Meatball on stage at Broadway Palm to Nov. 17

The Broadway Palm Children’s Theatre presents Curious George and the Golden Meatball playing now through Nov. 17. The show opened Oct. 20. Remaining performances are Nov. 2, 3, 7, 10, 11*, 14 and 17. Curious George and the Golden Meatball is an adventure-filled musical with everyone’s favorite mischievous monkey and his friend in the yellow hat. The production is based on the books by Margret and H.A. Rey. All-You-Can-Eat Meatball Day comes just once a year and Curious George could not be more excited to help his friend Chef Pisghetti. Things are always a bit more interesting with George involved, and on this day, all roads lead to Rome for the Golden Meatball Contest. Add a dash of fun and a bowl full of singing and dancing and you have a family musical that even the youngest theatregoers will enjoy. All performances begin with a buffet at 10:30 a.m. and show time at 11:30 a.m., except where indicated* - lunch is at noon and the show is at 1 p.m. The chef’s special buffet includes children’s favorites like pizza, chicken fingers, french fries, pasta

and more. Ticket prices for the buffet and the show are only $19 for all ages. Group rates are available for parties of 20 or more. Tickets are now on sale and can be reserved by calling (239) 278-4422, by visiting www.BroadwayPalm.com, or by stopping by the box office at 1380 Colonial Blvd. in Fort Myers.
