The Diplomat Beach Resort A great couple’s getaway in Hollywood, Florida By Mandy Carter Everyone needs a break away from the everyday routine of “mom life,” so planning a couple’s getaway can provide you with some relaxing time, pampering moments and a vacation feel without traveling thousands of miles. Luckily we live in a place where having an awesome getaway is super easy. There are so many great beach resorts around, one being the beautiful Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Florida, where you will not only have a relaxing escape but an adventure for your taste buds. The Diplomat rises 39 floors above the Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. The Diplomat Beach Resort Hollywood, A Curio Collection by Hilton, has 1,000 rooms and suites, a spa, two pools and lots of restaurants. The rooms have beautiful and comfortable contemporary furniture, great amenities and floor-to-ceiling windows with stunning views of the ocean. Led by celebrity chefs along with local chefs, The Diplomat offers a wide range of culinary offerings creating not only a perfect well rounded staycation!

On the first night, we dined at Monkitail. This beautiful restaurant located right off the lobby offers sushi and meats in mostly tapas form. We got overstuffed with a specialty menu customized by the chef that gave us an overview of the entire menu: from sushi to duck tacos and steak. Everything was delicious and perfectly crafted even my chili-pepper margarita! The Nokku lounge or lobby bar are great spots too for after dinner drinks. On day two, we grabbed breakfast sandwiches at Counter Point, the quick service spot off the lobby, before heading to our cabana. Then we enjoyed lunch with a view at La Playa during our pool day. Guacamole, Tacos, burger & fries with cold beer! And later that night, we had a divine dinner of salads, clam chowder, fish and steak at Point Royal. Before we checked out, we enjoyed the large buffet brunch back at Point Royal which included made to order omelets, smoked salmon, granola bar, fried chicken and more. I had a fabulous three days at this luxury South Florida hotel and highly recommend it to anyone for a quick couple’s getaway, family getaway or even for a foodcation.

L.E.A.D. Like a Girl “You are enough.” That was the message for almost 150 teenage girls who attended the second annual L.E.A.D Like a Girl symposium at Florida SouthWestern State College. The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools and the Hispanic American Doctors’ Association of SWFL hosted the event, which brings together teenage girls to learn from one another and from women who are leaders in Lee County. L.E.A.D Like a Girl SWFL, which

stands for leadership, education, advocacy and development, began in 2017 by Claribel Bocanegra, who is also the founder of the Hispanic American Doctors’ Association of Southwest Florida. “It’s such a powerful thing for a girl to hear that she is enough, that she is beautiful, you can do it, you can pursue your passions,” Bocanegra said. "Just those affirmations are so important for a young girl to hear, especially at this age."

As the bells of Notre Dame sound through the famed cathedral, Quasimodo, the hunchback bell-ringer, observes all of fifteenth-century Paris. Held captive by his devious caretaker, archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo, Quasimodo only finds kindness from the beautiful and clever gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though – the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies – and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. This version faithfully tells Victor Hugo’s classic tale of one man with a deformed body and another with a deformed soul. With unforgettable songs from the Disney film, this sweeping musical will touch your heart. 239-939-2787

Join Flu Free Florida by getting your flu shot this fall

The Florida Department of Health in Lee County is reminding all Floridians to get their flu shot before the height of the upcoming flu season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), last year’s record-breaking flu season resulted in 80,000 deaths in the United States, which is the highest number of deaths from the flu in over three decades. The CDC recommends getting your flu vaccine every year as the first and most important step in protecting against influenza and its potentially serious complications. Flu viruses evolve quickly, and last year’s vaccine may not protect against the current year’s flu strain. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone six months and older, including pregnant women. There are many different flu vaccine options this season, which include high dose and adjuvanted vaccine for adults aged 65 years and older. It can take up to two weeks after vaccination for 46 - November 2018

Other ways to help avoid the flu Another highly effective way to keep the flu at bay is to wash your hands often. Follow the guide below to help you and those you come into contact with stay healthy: When washing hands with soap and water • Wet your hands with clean running water and apply soap • Create a lather and scrub your hands • Wash your hands for 15-20 seconds. This is as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song through twice • Rinse your hands well under running water • Dry your hands using a paper towel and use the paper towel to turn off the faucet • If soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to clean your hands When using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer • Apply the product to the palm of one hand • Rub your hands together • Rub the hand sanitizer over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers, and continue rubbing until your hands are dry - courtesy of Lee Health

your body to develop protection against the flu. Even if the flu vaccine does not fully protect against the flu, it may reduce the severity of symptoms and the risk of complications. Getting vaccinated if you are healthy helps to protect our most vulnerable populations. People at higher risk for flu-related complications include children under the age of 5, adults over the age of 65, people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, and people who have existing medical conditions such as asthma or obesity. Protect yourself and those you love this season by getting your flu shot soon. In Lee County, call 239-461-6100 to schedule your flu shot. Movies on the big screen The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key— which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. It’s there that Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a gang of mice and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. Clara and Phillip must brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara’s key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. Starring Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Disney’s new holiday feature film The Nutcracker and the Four Realms is directed by Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston, and inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale.

The Grinch

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch lends his voice to the infamous Grinch, who lives a solitary life inside a cave on Mt. Crumpet with only his loyal dog, Max, for company. With a cave rigged with inventions and contraptions for his day-to-day needs, the Grinch only sees his neighbors in Who-ville when he runs out of food. Each year at Christmas they disrupt his tranquil solitude with their increasingly bigger, brighter and louder celebrations. When the Whos declare they are going to make Christmas three times bigger this year, the Grinch realizes there is only one way for him to gain some peace and quiet: he must steal Christmas. To do so, he decides he will pose as Santa Claus on Christmas Eve, even going so far as to trap a lackadaisical misfit reindeer to pull his sleigh.
