It’s fall y’all ...

A family bucket

list for November

By Mandy Carter

Visit a farmer’s market

After the initial back-to-school chaos, we can now breathe and have some family fun as we approach the holidays. I personally love bucket lists. Bucket lists are a great reminder to slow down, and take time to just enjoy some quality time with the kids. I’ve got 15 awesome ideas for you to kick start the holiday season with loads of family fun!

• Decorate the house with fall decor • Bake an apple pie together from scratch • Create a thankful jar • Have a family picnic • Make pine cone bird feeders • Roast marshmallows • Build a scarecrow • Paint gourds • Eat caramel apples • Pick out new fall candles • Donate food to a local food bank • Visit a farmer’s market • Make Blessing Mix and give to friends • Go for a walk in the woods • Plan Thanksgiving dinner (each family member picks two items)

Fall is a wonderful time to take a moment with the kids to reflect on the year so far. Talk about what made it special. What else you’d still like to do. And what things each member is thankful for. It can just be a chat while walking or a serious toast at Thanksgiving. 2019 is almost over, enjoy the last two months making fun memories!

Mandy Carter is a mother of two. She owns her own freelance marketing business, is a travel writer, speaker and mommy blogger who loves to share her passion for family travel. Follow her family adventures at acupful.com and connect with her on Instagram @mandymcarter

How to Create a Thankful Jar:

Roast marshmallows 6 - November 2019

There are many different ways to express gratitude during the month of November. This is what I do with my kids: Each year, I find a large jar at the thrift store, let my children have fun decorating it, and then place it on my kitchen table on November Every day leading up to Thanksgiving, we each write down something we are thankful for. At our Thanksgiving meal, we read them all out loud. Then I keep all our thankful messages in the jar and display them on a shelf.

Can music help your child’s

brain development?

Studies suggest tunes improve wellness – from pain to Alzheimer’s and more Music is weaved into the fabric of our lives. It serves as a static soundtrack for supermarket trips and elevator rides; it can accompany us on long trips and help us focus at work. However we hear it and however we use it, music inspires relaxation, joy, and memories. And it may even inspire brain development. Did you know that cellist Yo-Yo Ma, pianist Oscar Peterson and many other skilled musicians began their music training before the age of 7? A recent study suggests early music training may have a greater effect on brain structure than having the same training later in life, according to Science Daily. The study tested 36 highly trained musicians who were divided into two groups – those who began their training before age 7 and those who trained after, with both groups having the same years of training and experience. The study compared white matter organization using imaging and found that musicians who trained early had greater white matter connectivity. This white matter can produce long-lasting changes in behavior and the brain. “There’s a great deal of evidence that exposing children to music at an early age helps brain development,” says Dr. Pierre Loredo, a pediatrician with Lee Physician Group. “Whether it’s musical training to enhance a child's linguistic skill at a later age, or improving the development of a child’s phoneme processing and vocabulary skills at a younger age, research studies suggest music promotes development and positive outcomes.”

Music: Soothing pain and treating Alzheimer’s

Dr. Loredo says the study should encourage people to expand their concept of wellness and consider adding music training to the early stages of 38 - November 2019

their children’s lives as well as their own in later life. Doing so could potentially prevent and mitigate neurological diseases. Music therapy is being investigated to help treat Alzheimer’s patients and some studies have suggested it can help individuals with chronic pain. To foster your children’s interest in music, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests: • Putting a small stereo or boom box and a rotating collection of CDs in your child’s room. • Using a musical alarm clock or clock radio to help your child wake up. Many stereos have timers that let kids drift off to music, too. And certain songs can serve as cues for your child (for instance, one song you always play or sing in the morning when it’s time to get ready for school). • Sampling audio discs from your local library. You can try different artists and styles without spending money. • Introducing kids to songs from your own childhood or share music you love. • Singing with your kids in the car. • Making musical instruments available in your child’s play area. • Listening to music while cooking and cleaning. • Listening to music as a family activity. • Letting your kids use music-making computer software programs to lay down their own tracks, just like a professional. • Forming your own family band with real or improvised instruments (spoons, makeshift drums, etc.). Also, this is a good group activity for kids to try with friends. Learn more about children’s physical and mental health at leehealth.org/childrens-health or call 239-343-KIDS. Family News

Are you and your child

ready for flu season?

As the flu season gears up, it’s time for the Southwest Florida community to get ready. The number of cases in Lee County is already on the rise. So, how can we avoid the worst of the flu? It’s as easy as one, two, three, according to Lee Health infection prevention experts. Get the Flu Shot: The annual influenza vaccination is, hands down, the most effective way to combat the flu each year, said Dr. Ashraf Khan, Lee Health’s system director for epidemiology. “Getting your flu shot can make the difference between a serious medical episode and a safe and worry-free season,” he said. “Everyone able should receive a flu vaccination each year, early in the season. Period. It’s the best way to keep you, your loved ones and your neighbors safe and healthy.” The vaccine is available in physician offices, urgent care clinics and at many drug stores and pharmacies. Talk to your health care provider if you have specific questions about the flu shot. Clean Hands Save Lives: Another highly effective method to keep the flu at bay is to wash your hands often, according to Khan. Most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick, he said. This means you could be infected, not know it, and unwittingly spread the virus across your home or workplace. Good hand hygiene also keeps you from contracting the flu virus. Follow the guide below to help you and those you come into contact with stay healthy: When washing hands with soap and water • Wet your hands with clean running

water and apply soap. • Create a lather and scrub your hands. • Wash your hands for 15-20 seconds. This is as long as it takes to sing the “Happy Birthday” song twice. • Rinse your hands thoroughly under running water. • Dry your hands using a paper towel and use the paper towel to turn off the faucet. • If soap and clean water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer to clean your hands. When using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer • Apply the product to the palm of one hand. • Rub your hands together. • Rub the hand sanitizer over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers, and continue rubbing until your hands are dry. Know Where to Go If You’re Sick: If you come down with the flu and need to seek treatment, make sure you know where to go for the appropriate level of care. Your doctor’s office. These physicians know you and your medical needs and should be your first option for flu care. Urgent care centers provide easy access to skilled physicians and nurses for a wide range of non-emergency injuries or illnesses, like the flu. • Telehealth. Want expert care without leaving home? Use a telehealth service, like Lee Telehealth, to connect with a physician using your smart phone. • The emergency room should be your last option for the flu, unless you have sudden, severe or concerning symptoms. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making Family News

it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information. November 2019 - 39
