PUMPKIN decorating It’s that time of the year again…Fall! It’s time for going to pumpkin patches, hayrides, drinking apple cider and pumpkin spice everything. One thing I am not a huge fan of is pumpkin carving. It’s gooey, messy and my husband ends up doing most of the work. I love going to pumpkin patches, mostly for the donuts, but also to pick out the perfect pumpkins. Every year, I procrastinate when it comes down to actually carving them. We usually end up getting to it the night before Halloween because I have put it off for so long. I was looking for some alternatives to pumpkin carving and I found a lot of neat ideas. Painting your pumpkins is one option. You can paint it all one color, add designs, or paint on faces or characters. If your artistic abilities are similar to mine, a stencil will be helpful. Another idea is decorative duct tape. There are so many designs out there. It’s a cheap and easy
way to decorate. Cut strips of duct tape, and tape from the stem to the base. Go around the pumpkin applying the strips of duct tape; and you have a decorated pumpkin. My personal favorite is a bedazzled pumpkin. There are many options including glitter, sequins, rhinestones, gemstones and jewels. Make those pumpkins sparkle! After purchasing all the supplies to decorate our pumpkins, my oldest daughter informed me she wants to bake the pumpkin seeds this year since we forgot last year. In fact, she has several recipes she would like to try. Guess who will be carving pumpkins! I want to see your pumpkins! Post pics of your decorated or carved pumpkins in the comment section on my blog at www.leefamilynews.net Happy decorating (or carving)!

Annual Pumpkin Festival Oct. 14-16 at Fleamasters
The fall harvest season kicks off with Punkin’palooza: Fleamasters’ 6th Annual Great Pumpkin Festival. It’s the best of the hometown fall festivals you remember: a pumpkin patch, pony rides, pumpkin and face painting. The three-day event features family-friendly activities, shopping and free entertainment. Punkin’palooza rolls into Fleamasters Fleamarket, 4135 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Oct. 14, 15 and 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking and admission are free.
It’s time to “get your pumpkin on,” said Linda Steele, Fleamasters marketing director. Adopt a pumpkin at the Pumpkin Patch ($5 to $15 per pumpkin) to paint, personalize and take home. “And you can create a special Pumpkin Festival memory at the Pumpkin Farmer’s Family Photo Spot. Kids of all ages can try their hand at our carnival-style games, and take home a plush prize.” Singers and musicians will perform on stage at Fleamasters Music Hall. Among them, new faces as well as well-known favorites: Cape Coral’s 30-member Hafenkapelle Festival Band, Unforgiven country and southern rock band, Electric Lipstick (dance, rock ’n roll), The Dixielanders, violinist Laura Leary and The Dixie Strollers.
The Whispering Pines Clydesdales will be on hand to meet and greet Friday, Oct. 14. Endless Trails pony rides for kids ($5) are on the calendar Saturday and Sunday. Look up, and you’ll see one very tall scarecrow. The amazing Way Too Tall Torrie will navigate Fleamasters’ aisles on stilts, while making balloon animals for kids. The talented face-painters, Giggles and Tutu, will entertain Saturday and Sunday. Shop for crafts and decorative items, including jewelry, quilts, artwork, home decor, clothing, and innumerable other items. Fleamasters Fleamarket is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, rain or shine. The market offers food and craft vendors and hundreds of unique, owner-operated stores. If you have something to sell (especially if you’re an artist or crafter, or have holiday gifts) Fleamasters’ Pumpkin
Festival is a great place to display your wares. Space starts at only $5 per day. Find information about Fleamasters Fleamarket and Punkin’palooza at www.fleamall.com, or connect with Fleamasters on Facebook for festival updates.

for the exposure of your organization to a captive audience. For the Junior Parade, you don’t need to have a giant float. Whether you’re part of a band, you want to walk with your favorite equine, or you have a giant balloon, the Edison Festival aims to incorporate everyone to get creative and shine. Of course, the Edison Festival of Light wouldn’t be complete without, well, light. As homage to the famous inventor, the Edison Festival requires everyone in the Grand Parade to excite spectators by wearing some sort of illumination. Become a part of the action and join a parade route to illuminate, innovate, and celebrate. Visit the website and apply today. Designed to “Illuminate. Innovate. Celebrate.” The Edison Festival of Light, Inc. honors Thomas Alva Edison’s contributions to mankind including Southwest Florida, and seeks to improve the community by education and activities relating to Edison’s works and values. Monster Cookie Dough Dip www.the-girl-who-ate-everything.com
1 (8 ounce) cream cheese, softened ½ cup butter, slightly softened 1 cup creamy peanut butter 2 cups powdered sugar 3 tablespoons brown sugar
¼ cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 ½ cups rolled oats, old fashioned 2/3 cup plain M&Ms (give or take) 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions With a hand mixer or stand mixer, beat the cream cheese, butter, and peanut butter until smooth. Add in the powdered sugar, brown sugar, flour, and vanilla. Using the paddle attachment on your stand mixer or just a wooden spoon, mix in the oats. You may want to use more or less here. I really like the oats in it and a thicker dip so I added a lot. Remember that the dip will also firm up a bit in the fridge. Add the M&Ms and chocolate chips. Store in the refrigerator until serving. Serve with pretzels, graham crackers, or apple slices. You can dip or spread this depending on how thick you made your dip. Try not to eat it all like I did! Note: You can use more or less oats to adjust the thickness of your dip. Start with about 1½ cups oats and keep adding until you reach your desired thickness. If you use quick oats you might use less since it's finer and will make the dough thicker.

Autism screening for young children Oct. 7 in Lehigh
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Oct. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the East Lee County Regional Library, 881 Gunnery Road, Lehigh Acres. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than child-
hood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.
Seek professional care for pink eye
By Dr. Heather Trapheagen School’s back in session and with it comes colds, flu and “pink eye.” Pink eye, or conjunctivitis, is swelling or infection of the eye. Most parents think it is just a childhood illness, but adults can be affected by it as well. The conjunctiva is a thin membrane lining the eyeball and eyelids and it becomes swollen and red (or pink). Generally, “pink eye” is meant to be a viral infection, but many get it confused with other causes of conjunctivitis. Symptoms may include: • Matting or crustiness in the lashes • Eye pain or discomfort
FAMILY NEWS
• Gritty or sandy feeling in the eye • Increased tearing • Itching or burning of the eye • Redness in the eyes How is it treated? Treatment of conjunctivitis depends on the cause. The most common causes are: allergic, bacterial, viral and contact lens related issues. It is important to see an eye care professional for full evaluation for any of the above symptoms to get proper treatment. If you have any questions regarding your child’s eyes or vision, please call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573-EYES (3937). Most insurances are accepted.
