A must do with kids: Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party
By Mandy Carter It is a tradition of ours to go to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at Disney World each year. This is an annual special event held on certain dates in September and October. General park admission to the Magic Kingdom will not gain you access to this seasonal event, you will need to pre-purchase the ticket for the exact party date. Since this was my fourth year at the party, I want to share with you some tips on how to make the most of this Disney event so that you not only enjoy yourself but you get the full value out of your ticket. 1. Purchase the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween tickets early This party is held on a limited number of dates each year. It is highly recommended to pre-purchase your tickets as early as possible. With its popularity, many of the dates sell out. 2. Arrive at the park three hours before the official party begins One of the really great things about the tickets to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is that you can gain access to the Magic Kingdom three hours before the party begins. This gives you time to visit your favorite attractions before the Halloween festivities begin. 3. Wear a comfortable costume. I encourage the entire family to wear some type of friendly costume, but make sure it is comfortable. After all, you will be walking around in the Florida heat for possibly 8 hours in it. In addition to the heat and walking you
6
OCTOBER 2017
will be enjoying rides, so take all that into consideration when picking out yours and your kids costume. 4. Skip the first parade, wait for the second. While everyone is lining up to catch the first parade, take advantage of the shorter lines at the popular attractions. There is another parade time later in the night. Plus it is darker, making it more fun when the headless horseman gallops by.
5. Do not miss the fireworks I repeat, do not miss the fireworks. The fireworks display at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is special and by far my favorite show. The villains take over for a unique light show spectacle that only happens a few times a year.

1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/2 cup white sugar 1 egg, beaten 2 tablespoons milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup white sugar 24 chocolate candy 48 candy eyeballs 1/2 cup prepared chocolate frosting
Dracula Cookie Fangs
www.allrecipes.com Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Line baking sheets with baking parchment. Beat shortening, peanut butter, brown sugar, and 1/2 cup white sugar together with an electric mixer in a large bowl until smooth. Beat egg into the creamy mixture until fully incorporated. Stir milk and vanilla extract into the mixture until smooth. Mix flour, baking soda, and salt together in a small bowl; add to the wet mixture in the large bowl and stir until completely incorporated into a dough. Divide and shape dough into 48 balls. Spread 1/4 cup white sugar into a wide, shallow bowl. Roll dough balls in sugar to coat and arrange about 2 inches apart onto prepared baking sheets. Bake in preheated oven until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Remove cookies from oven and quickly press a dimple into the middle of each cookie using the blunt end of a wooden spoon. Cool cookies on sheets for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Cut each chocolate sphere into two hemispheres. Put one piece atop each cookie with the rounded side facing upwards. Spoon frosting into a pastry bag with a small round tip or a plastic freezer bag with one end snipped off. Dab a small amount of frosting onto the back of each candy eyeball and stick two onto each chocolate candy to resemble eyes. Then pipe frosting in four thin lines, starting at the base of the candy, on each side atop the cookie to resemble spider legs.

How to prevent sudden infant death syndrome
By Kate Lynch, Lee Health Each year, thousands of parents lose a baby to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), also called crib or cot death. The leading cause of death in the first year of life, 90 percent of infants aged two to seven months who die from SIDS do so between midnight and 6 a.m., without warning or signs. The exact cause of SIDS is unknown, but studies offer potential reasons for the occurrences. “Infants who die of SIDS may have increased weaknesses or vulnerability, combined with a modifiable risk factor,” explains Joseph Hobson, D.O. Dr. Hobson practices family medicine with an additional concentration in pediatrics. “Unsafe sleep conditions, where an infant may roll facedown into a soft blanket or sleep face down, may adversely affect breathing,” he says. Some parents trust heart and breathing monitors to prevent losing their infant to SIDS. However, these devices have not been proven to reduce the fatal risk. No exams or symptoms can predict whether an infant’s condition may lead to SIDS, but there are measures you can take to reduce the risk. SIDS prevention techniques: • Expectant mothers should receive regular prenatal care and never smoke during their pregnancy. • Adults should place infants on their back to sleep instead of in a

“sleep positioner” or on their side. • When infants are old enough to roll over, adults should stop swaddling or wrapping them in a blanket before placing them on their back to sleep. • Infants should sleep on a firm surface without soft objects nearby. • Avoid placing pillows, stuffed animals, quilts, bumper pads, and other soft objects with the infant. • Substitute a blanket with infant sleep clothing. • Bed-sharing increases the risk of SIDS. • A crib, cradle or bassinet in the parents’ room near the bed is the safest place for an infant. • “Co-sleeper” devices that are placed within an adult bed are not recommended. • Pacifiers can prevent suffocation as they may create a barrier between the infant’s mouth and any potential airway restrictors, like soft bedding. • Avoid overheating the infant by keeping the bedroom cool and dressing them in light, breathable clothing. • Household members should avoid smoking. • Car seats are for travel safety. Car seats, strollers, swings and bouncers should not be used to help put infants to sleep, as sleeping in an upright position may lead to breathing problems.

Remember to give your eyes a break from the screen often
By Dr. Heather Trapheagen Often times, parents wonder if video games or computers can harm a child’s vision. These activities, if not done in moderation, may cause the focusing ability of the eye to spasm or fatigue. If this occurs, headaches and eye pain may occur. While no permanent damage is done, the visual system may become strained. Stress from staring at a screen, which can occur at any age, may cause burning, pressurelike headaches, and tired eyes. Breaks should occur often. Keep in mind a simple rule: 20-
ALS Walk Oct. 28
20-20. After 20 minutes, rest the eyes for 20 seconds by staring at something 20 feet away. Remembering to blink during the activity or using artificial tears in the eyes may also be helpful in keeping the eyes comfortable. Using a proper viewing distance for television and hand-held video games (and even smart phones & tablets) will reduce any unnecessary strain on the eyes and the visual system. If you would like to see if your child is having any focusing issues, call to schedule an appointment with Dr. Heather Trapheagen at 573EYES (3937). Many insurances are accepted.
The 2017 Southwest Florida ALS Walk take place at Miromar Outlets in Estero on Saturday, Oct. 28. Organizers have changed the name to reflect the goal of reaching all Southwest Florida, from Port Charlotte to Marco Island. The goal is to raise $65,000 to assist patients and help fund a cure for ALS. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. near the WINK Playland. The walk begins at 9:30 a.m. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease) robs people of their ability to walk, speak, swallow and breathe. In many cases, the mind is completely unaffected. Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with ALS and every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS. There are 1,600 ALS patients in Florida. ALS is always fatal. There is no cure. Pre-register online at web.alsa.org/SWFlorida. For more info, contact Darcy Klempner at dklempner@alsafl.org

Autism screening for young children scheduled for Oct. 6 in Lehigh Acres
Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Oct. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at New Life Assembly, 5146 Leonard St., Lehigh Acres. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common
than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.

The ponies face their biggest friendship challenge yet as they search for help across magical mountains, undersea worlds, and even onboard an airship in a thrilling race to save their home. The film has an all-star voice cast including Emily Blunt, Kristin Chenoweth, Liev Schreiber, Michael Peña, Sia, Taye Diggs, Uzo Aduba and Zoe Saldana.

Written and directed by Mitch Davis (The Other Side of Heaven), the movie releases in select markets nationwide in October. “Pluto” comes out of nowhere and quickly makes himself at home with the Davis family, who are on the brink of falling apart. Dad (Michael Cassidy) is a careerdriven workaholic who is neglecting his marriage and family. Mom (Sarah Lancaster) is at her wit’s end raising three young kids. The last thing they need is another mouth to feed. Or is it? In just a short time with the Davis family, Pluto the “wonderdog” manages to save a lost toddler, bring comfort and companionship to a hurting 9-year-old boy (Connor Corum), help restore a marriage, and repair a broken fatherson relationship. Pluto is not only a guard dog – he’s a guardian angel. Sometimes help comes from the most unlikely places. Sometimes our prayers get answered in strange ways. Sometimes one dog can change everything.

Young Artists Awards to grant final scholarships
The board of directors of the not for profit Young Artists Awards program would like to express its appreciation to all of those in the community who have supported its mission. After 14 years serving thousands of students in the performing arts in the area, it has become increasingly difficult to raise the money to run the program effectively. As the Young Artists Awards has grown to include more students wanting to participate, the costs in terms of running the organization have risen dramatically. The majority of the time spent was on fundraising instead of serving children in the arts. This was not a decision that was come to lightly. The board had numerous discussions about merging with
other organizations, cutting back on programming and various other options. However, by majority consensus it was felt that is was time to shut the doors while keeping the integrity of the program intact. The remaining dollars the organization has will be used for a final round of scholarships. The not for profit Young Artists Awards, the area’s largest program for students in the performing arts, is pleased to announce a new written scholarship opportunity open to prior finalists of the program. Visit the scholarship page on the website www.youngartistsawards.org for more information and the application or email info@youngartistsawards.org. The deadline to apply is Oct. 27.
Young artists have until Oct. 20 to enter their artwork for the upcoming Estero Fine Art Show scheduled for Nov. 18 and 19 at Gulf Coast Town Center. All categories of discipline are open and the entries will be displayed during the art show. Young artists (ages 5-13) have the opportunity to win one of four awards:
one $100 best of youth art award and three $50 youth art awards of excellence. Each winner also receives a beautiful, two foot long ribbon. Youth are encouraged to be imaginative and creative as they begin to learn the rules of being part of a professional art show. For more details, visit online at www.HotWorks.org.

Oceans Climate Change: Acid vs. Life
IMAG History & Science Center opens new exhibit IMAG History & Science Center is presenting a new experience from NRG Exhibits about the effects of acidity in the oceans. The exhibit will serve to educate and inform guests about the impacts of ocean acidification in an up close and interactive way. “The oceans have experienced a 30% increase in acidity in recent years, and many are not aware of this, or the negative impact it is having”, said executive director Matt Johnson. The information that comprises the exhibit, Climate Change Oceans: Acid vs. Life, was gathered by a group of citizen scientists and film crews that traveled to the University of Belize Marine Research Station. The diving they did there, on the largest coral reef in the Western Hemisphere, and the data and images they collected form the basis for the exhibit. Their expedition was organized in conjunction with the Port Townsend Marine Science Center and The Explorers Club. The exhibit will include a life-size replica of a coral reef which will allow energetic guests to crawl through it, experiencing what a diver sees while exploring the ocean. Six live action and computer animated video stations will engage guests
in learning about the compelling topic of acidification. Guests will also gain perspective on the diversity of reefs via displays of shells, and will examine coral, sponges and other marine life through a microscope. “Our hope is to bring this very real phenomenon alive and educate visitors about what is occurring in our oceans,” said Johnson. The exhibit is now open and runs through the end of the year. IMAG History and Science Center is a family-friendly destination offering fun interactive exhibits, an aquarium, history displays and a 3D theatre. The mission is to engage guests in the exploration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), and more recently the history of Southwest Florida. This is achieved through hands-on experiences and educational programs that further the understanding of the natural and human-made world, and foster an appreciation for Southwest Florida’s unique environment, natural waterways, and rich history. A visit to IMAG nurtures intellectual curiosity, discovery, and innovation. For more information, visit www.theIMAG.org or visit in person at 2000 Cranford Ave., Fort Myers.
