Key West: A change in latitude

By Mandy Carter If you are looking for your lost shaker of salt, then I highly suggest taking a road trip to Margaritaville Resort & Marina in Key West. It is the perfect hotel for a fun yet relaxing weekend in the sun. From the beautiful tropical pool vibes and outdoor oceanfront dining to the spacious, modern room with an ideal island location, I found myself completely relaxed from the moment we arrived. The rooms are fabulous. We scored a one bedroom suite overlooking the most perfect sunsets. All rooms are elegantly styled to put you in vacation mode immediately. There is so much to do without going far. Margaritaville's marina location and close proximity to Duval Street (an easy 5-minute walk) makes it the perfect home-spot for your Key West adventures. But if you're the type who prefers to spend your getaways sitting poolside sipping margaritas, this place is also for you. I am somewhere in the middle, so our ideal property offers both- and that's exactly what we found in Margaritaville.

5 things to do during your stay at Margaritaville Key West Resort

1. Enjoy the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square No trip to Key West is complete without a sunset viewing from the pier surround-

6 - October 2019

ed by street performers, musicians, artists, food vendors and of course the beautiful glow of the sun as it sinks down across the water. 2. Have a drink on the Sunset Deck The Sunset Deck is part of the Margaritaville Resort and situated directly above Bistro 245 on the second floor of the main building along the waterfront. The Sunset Deck opens everyday one hour before sunset. This offers a more private and elevated viewing- especially great for the busy season! 3. Take a short walk to Duval St. There is so much to do within walking distance of the Margaritaville Resort: from visiting the peaceful Butterfly Conservatory and stepping back in time at a number of historic sites to enjoying local brews and live music on Duval Street. 4. Have dinner at Bistro 245 There are lots of yummy restaurants in Key West, but if you want a front row seat of the sunset to go with your decadent meal then you will want to make reservations at Bistro 245, which is located at the Margaritaville Resort. 5. Bike to Fort Zachary for a great beach day There are so many places to rent bikes (or bring your own), giving you a chance to explore the island a little further without needing to worry about parking. And Fort Zachary is one of those must visit spots. This nearby state park is deal for a shaded, beachfront picnic followed by an afternoon of snorkeling. For more information to help you plan your next trip to Key West, visit online at www.margaritavillekeywestresort.com

The Hobbit

Centers for the Arts Bonita Springs -Hinman Auditorium 10150 Bonita Beach Rd, Bonita Springs October 18 - 20 • Friday – Saturday, 7 p.m. & Saturday – Sunday 2 p.m. It's unusual for a modern work to become a classic so quickly, but Tolkien's "ring" stories, which began with The Hobbit, clearly are in this very special category. They stir the imagination and intellect of everyone they touch. Bilbo, one of the most conservative of all Hobbits, is asked to leave his large, roomy and very dry home in the ground in order to set off as chief robber in an attempt to recover an important treasure. It's the last thing that any sensitive Hobbit would want to do, but great benefit eventually results—not only for Bilbo but for all of the Hobbits who inhabit Middle Earth—and the hearts of those children and adults who continue to enjoy this kind of magic. 239-495-8989

Halloween safety

With “spooktacular” fun, trick-or-treating and costume parties right around the corner, it is important to make sure your kids know how to stay safe on Halloween. According to Safe Kids Southwest Florida, kids are more likely to be hit and killed by cars on Halloween than on any other day of the year. Sally Kreuscher, coordinator for Safe Kids Southwest Florida, Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, recommends drivers eliminate distractions, stay alert in residential areas, and look twice for kids on curbs, in medians and at intersections. “Halloween is a whimsical time for children, and they may behave in unpredictable ways,” Sally says. “Drive slowly and carefully, especially when entering and exiting driveways and alleys.” 38 - October 2019

Share these safety tips with your kids: Costume Selection

• Prevent falls by making sure the costume is the right size for your trick-or-treater. • Masks can obstruct a child’s vision. Instead, use non-toxic face paint and makeup. • Get creative and decorate costumes and bags with light-colored stickers and reflective tape.

Walking Safely

• An adult should accompany trick-or-treaters younger than age 12, using crosswalks and obeying traffic signals when crossing the street. Older kids should travel in groups and trick-and-treat in well-lighted, familiar neighborhoods. • Kids should carry flashlights or glow sticks to help them see and be seen by drivers. Remind children not to break or chew glow sticks because they contain hazardous liquid.

Teach kids to: • Look left, right, and left; and keep looking for oncoming traffic while crossing streets. • Before crossing in front of a car, make eye contact with its driver to make sure he or she sees them. • Walk on well-lighted sidewalks and paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk on the far left side of the road that faces traffic. • Watch for cars that are turning and backing up. Never dart into the street or cross between parked cars.

Check Candy

• Before kids are allowed to eat their treats, adults should check for signs of tampering. • If the candy wrapper is torn, faded or unwrapped, throw away the candy. • Remind kids to only eat treats packaged in unopened, original wrappers. Family News
