School is in, so mini vacation time begins
By Mandy Carter
The kids are back in school, but that doesn’t mean family vacations have to come to an end. This is the perfect time of year for taking minivacations in our own piece of paradise. Here is the perfect way to create a fun mini vacation in Naples: Book a beachfront room at the Edgewater Beach Hotel. This quaint beachfront boutique hotel offers home-like comforts with simple luxuries families enjoy on vacation. Everyone loves a nice hotel stay and this one will impress even the youngest guest with the beautiful beach and poolside games at their fingertips. Take the kids on a sailboat excursion to look for dolphins. Cool Beans Cruises offers the perfect 3 hour family friendly sailing on a beautiful catamaran. Sitting upfront with the wind blowing and sun shining as you all look for wildlife will create some unique family memories. Complimentary snacks and beverages are
included in the sailing.
Feed giraffes at the Naples Zoo. This Southwest Florida Zoo is a great way to spend a few hours with the family interacting with animals from the daily shows to the up close giraffe feeding experience. Eat in the Botanical Gardens. The Fogg Cafe is a casual dining experience with a naturally beautiful atmosphere that everyone will enjoy. After enjoying their seasonal menu created from local foods, you can stroll through the Gardens at your own pace. Be sure to not miss the Smith Children’s Garden where the kids will be able to create a masterpiece with sidewalk chalk, climb a treehouse and shower plants with the fun water pump. Learn through play at C’MON. The Golisano Children’s Museum of Naples is full of hands-on exhibits where imagination runs wild as you journey through the swamps of the Everglades,, climb a twostory banyan tree, explore an igloo, become a weather forecaster, a farmer, a chef, a fisherman, an artist, an architect or a veterinarian.

Frosting: With a stand mixer or an electric mixer, combine the egg whites and the salt until it thickens (about 2 minutes on med-high speed). Next, in a small pan heat up the sugar and the light corn syrup until it comes to a boil. Once it is boiling, remove it from the heat and pour it over the egg whites (while slowly mixing). Now you’ll want to really crank up the speed on your mixer. Depending on your mixer, go ahead and mix everything on high speed for 4-6 minutes until the frosting is thick and forms peaks. Parties in HD It’s all about the color....and lots of it!
Due to the tremendous increase in high definition movies, parties this season are all about the color. Let’s just say, neon is in this year! sparkly glitter, multicolored sprinkles, vibrant confetti, bright streamers & polka dot balloons make any birthday extravaganza a colossal hit!
Character Celebration
1.
With a kaleidoscope of colorful animated movie characters to pick from this year, incorporating one or two into your child’s big day is quite an easy task. Centering any party around something that is near and dear to your child, will in turn make the party more memorable for everyone.
Bedazzle with Edibles
2.
Functional decorating is always a great way to enhance any party! Find foods that bring a lot of color to the table! Fruits and candies are a must!
Attention Span Challenged Stations
3.
In the age of video games, microwaves and drive-thrus.... keeping kids engaged for a long period of time can be challenging. With this in mind, multi-station activities are definitly a step in the right direction. The options are endless and of course, sometime messy!
A DIY T-shirt paint station is always a party favorite and should certainly be supervised closely! Other station suggestions include; tattoo station, candy necklaces craft station (fruit loops & life savers work the best), building station-bucket of bricks (Legos), bubbles, play dough & slime stations. Food can be fun too! Ice cream/sherbert stations, cupcake/donut decorating stations and finger food dippin’ stations. Pinterest is wonderful for more crazy station ideas!
Messy Mayhem
4.
Color runs are all the rage right now, so why not bring that fun to the party! Make your own DIY colored powder, fill a bag for each kid to throw!
Don’t underestimate the power of whipped cream! Try a colored whipped cream Slip N' Slide, whipped cream filled balloon fight and whipped cream finger painting! Yummy Fun!
The number one trending party food presentation idea is food grazing... millennial moms love variety and creativity. Throw away the individual plates and randomly stack an assortment of food items across the table! Table grazing can be fun and platter free! Some other great colorful food ideas include, Pepperidge Farms goldfish colors, cotton candy and jiggley-wiggly gello creations. For a creative beverage area, try virgin mocktails and slushy punches in fun shaped glasses. Dip the rim of the glass in quick drying frosting, add sprinkles and you have the perfect kid-friendly drink!

Almost, Maine
Lee County Alliance for the Arts 10091 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers Performances are September 15 & 16 at 8 p.m. and September 17 at 3 p.m.
Alliance Youth Theatre Presents Almost, Maine by John Cariani. On a cold, clear, moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. As the northern lights hover in the star-filled sky above, Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways. Knees are bruised. Hearts are broken. But the bruises heal, and the hearts mend—almost—in this delightful midwinter night’s dream. The play, a series of nine vignettes about love, is knee-deep in whimsy. 239-939-2787

How to recognize strep throat By Kate Lynch, Lee Health Our country’s northern states experience “strep throat season,” but in Southwest Florida, children and teens are at risk for catching strep throat year-round. “Strep throat is the most common bacterial cause of sore throats,” says pediatrician Anthony G. Pietroniro, M.D. “In fact, strep throat causes 15 percent to 30 percent of all sore throats in children between the ages of 5 to 15. Although we can see strep throat in children younger than 2 years old, it is not as common.” Strep throat is an infection of the throat caused by the bacteria group A streptococcus. This bacterium also can cause a bumpy rash with a fine sandpaper-like feel, called scarlatina. It usually starts on the neck and groin areas and spreads. “A sore throat accompanied by a cough

and/or runny nose is most likely viral and not strep throat.” Dr. Pietroniro says. “With strep throat, you experience a sudden onset of symptoms usually without significant runny nose or cough.” Signs and symptoms of strep throat can include a sudden onset of: • Fever • Sore throat • Swollen lymph nodes • White patches on the tonsils • Fatigue • Headache • Stomach ache • Nausea • Vomiting • Rash • Red dots on the roof of the mouth Kids can easily catch and spread strep throat when they’re at school or in daycare.
“You can reduce the chance of acquiring strep throat through diligent hand washing,” Dr. Pietroniro says. “You can also reduce the risk of catching it by not drinking from other people’s glasses, bottles or sippy cups.” Strep throat is most commonly treated by taking oral penicillin, such as penicillinVK or amoxicillin. For people allergic to penicillin, there are other antibiotics available. “The symptoms of strep throat may resolve on their own within three to five days, but we treat it to prevent possible complications down the road,” Dr. Pietroniro says. “Treating this bacterial infection with antibiotics is very effective in significantly reducing the risk for acute rheumatic fever–- a complication of strep throat that can damage the heart, joints and
even the brain.” If your child has a sudden onset of a sore throat, especially if it is associated with a fever, call your pediatrician’s office. Avoid getting sick or getting others sick by using this proper hand-washing technique: 1. Wet your hands using clean, running warm or cold water. 2. Lather your hands with soap and rub them together. Remember to get between your fingers, on the backs of your hands and underneath your nails. 3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. If you need help keeping time, hum the “Happy Birthday” song twice. 4. Be sure to rinse your hands well with clean water. 5. Use a clean towel to dry your hands or let them air dry.

Major expansion planned at Gulf Coast Medical Center
The Lee Health Board of Directors approved a $306 million expenditure—the final funding request for a major expansion of Gulf Coast Medical Center. This amount includes construction costs, furnishings, equipment and information systems required to complete the project, which will add 367,500 square feet to the existing 531,000square-foot facility. In addition to the substantial increase in square footage, the project will add 268 new inpatient beds to the hospital for a total of 624. The funding passed with full support from the Lee Health Board of Directors. Dave Kistel, Lee Health vice president of facility management, says the board of directors has already funded $41 million. “Of the project costs already incurred, the six-level, 1,300-space parking
garage, which cost $19 million and opened last month, has been the most significant physical change on the campus of Gulf Coast Medical Center,” Kistel says. “Now, with the funding approved, we can move forward with this exciting project that will help us better meet the medical needs of our community.” The project also includes the relocation of the Trauma Center, now located at Lee Memorial Hospital, and allows for the growth of several departments. Following the completion of the project, specific, highacuity services will move from Lee Memorial Hospital to Gulf Coast Medical Center. Total cost of the expansion and renovation project is $347 million. The Gulf Coast Medical Center expansion is expected to be completed by 2021.
