Disney’s Blizzard Beach

A Florida winter wonderland where the family can cool off By Mandy Carter Frosty fun in Florida? You bet. If you have not visited a Disney water park, then you are missing out. Take a road trip to Disney’s Blizzard Beach water park for some cooling off fun before Summer completely escapes us. I just recently returned from this cute ski resort themed water park. Despite being a former Cast Member at Disney years ago, this was the first time I had visited a Disney Water Park in decades. To say we had a great time is an understatement. The five hours of fun I had planned quickly turned into ten hours of nonstop water park activities. I was impressed with the number of rides for all ages and varied levels of thrills. You can take a ski lift up the mountain then choose how to zip down it. If floating around a long lazy river or sunbathing with a cocktail in hand, then you are in luck too. Children under 48 inches tall can even splash around in their own water area complete with several toddler-sized waterslides. The kids and I agree that our favorite ride is the “Teamboat Springs” where we got to share a raft and lots of laughs as we propelled down the hill much faster than we anticipated. This water slide is truly a fun family adventure on one of the world’s longest group whitewater raft rides, where up to six people of any age can get in on the thrill. We loved it so much we rode it at least 6 times throughout the day. Whether you are driving up for a day of fun or looking to add on something different to a weekend trip to Orlando, Disney’s Blizzard Beach is certain to make everyone happy for hours.

A few things to know before you go:

Parking is FREE (that never happens)! You can rent lockers in various sizes for storing your valuables. The food is basic but expensive, however you are allowed to bring in coolers for picnics. Water shoes would be useful because you will walk on hot concrete a lot. They have life jackets for children to use but you can also bring your own.

Today kids are bombarded by so many scary events flashed over TV and the Internet. As we move into an age where bullying can be done on the computer and pictures can reach millions with the click of a mouse, we need to address, at an early age, the intense emotions experienced in childhood and adolescence. The earlier kids learn about their own feelings, the more they can recognize and sympathize with how others feel too. With knowledge comes power, and with emotional understanding comes empathy, self-respect and resolution. Arming kids with social emotional learning tools, helps teach and provide a foundation for the necessary skills to diffuse volatile situations.

Two generations of family volunteers seek one goal: Helping others in the community

Courtesy of Lee Health Mike Donlan admits he didn’t know anything about granddaughter Emily Donlan’s plan to volunteer at Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. “Emily just came in one day to the hospital’s gift shop, asked how to volunteer and became one,” he explains. He adds with a laugh, “That’s what started all this. I had nothing to do with it.” “All this” is two generations of Donlan family members donating their time, compassion and hope to the hospital and community. For four years, Mike Donlan and his wife, Kathy, have volunteered at Golisano Children’s Hospital. “The hospital is a beautiful place to volunteer,” Mike says. “The work gives me something to do. It’s structured and keeps me connected to things that are happening.” Emily has special ties to Golisano Children’s Hospital. She was born 14 years ago in its neonatal intensive care unit. Florida Department of Health offers safety tips with red tide The Florida Department of Health in Lee is reminding residents and visitors to use caution when on the beach or in waters with high concentrations of red tide. Protect your family and pets by staying away from affected areas until the blooms move further offshore or they go away. Red tide is a naturally occurring algae that has been documented along Florida’s Gulf Coast since the 1840s and occurs nearly every year. Because the blooms are patchy, other local beaches may be okay to visit. The department encourages everyone to review these tips to stay safe while enjoying Florida’s beaches: In Florida, red tide is caused by a naturally occurring microscopic alga called Karenia brevis. Red tide algal blooms can change rapidly, staying in one place for months or just a few days or weeks. Symptoms from breathing red tide usually include coughing, sneezing and watery eyes. For most people, symptoms are temporary and typically go away when the person leaves the area. Wearing a particle filter mask may lessen the effects, and over-the-counter antihistamines

decrease symptoms. People with chronic respiratory problems, like asthma, should avoid areas with active red tides. People with symptoms that persist should seek medical attention. Pet owners are advised that red tide poses a risk to animals brought to the beach. Red tide can affect animals if they drink affected water, lick their wet paws or fur, or breath marine aerosols. Residents sensitive to red tide and living in beach areas affected by blooms are advised to close windows and run the air conditioner (making sure that the AC filter is maintained according to the manufacturer’s specifications). Seafood, including shellfish, in restaurants, hotels, grocery stores, and markets is safe to eat. Cooked shellfish (oysters, clams, mussels) thoroughly to prevent exposure to Vibrio vulnificus. Shellfish should not be harvested or eaten from areas with active red tide. Beachgoers are encouraged to check conditions before they go to the beach as conditions can change daily. For the latest Red Tide Status Reports, visit online at www.MyFWC.com/RedTide.

Autism screening for young children set for Sept. 14 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Sept. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family Health Center, 316 Del Prado Blvd., Cape Coral. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder, making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. The ASD screening is conducted by the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. The screenings are administered by an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner, who has extensive training and experience in typical child development and developmental disorders. A physician referral is not required. To schedule a screening, call 239-343-6838.
