SEPTEMBER 2016

I am the proud mother of three amazing girls. I am so excited to share my thoughts with you every month. Let’s dive right in. Summer break flew by as usual, and the kids are back to school. I don’t know about you, but I need to get more organized. My mornings are chaotic. I’m trying to get three kids dressed, teeth brushed, breakfast served and out the door before the first bell rings. Whew! I’m exhausted before we even leave. I have found a few ideas on Pinterest that may make my mornings a little less hectic. First of all, I really dislike packing lunches. One way to make packing lunches less miserable is letting your kids help you pack them. It’s a win-win situation. Not only are they helping you pack it, they will be more likely to eat what is packed. Set-up plastic bins in your pantry and refrigerator. Label each bin with a specific food group and how many servings they need to grab. For example, the vegetable bin can include carrot sticks, cucumber slices or celery sticks in snack baggies. Voila. Lunches are packed!

Next, for my girls, getting the right outfit picked out each day is a challenge. I cannot tell them what I like, or it will never be worn again. I don’t know when I became so out of style. To avoid the stress of picking out an outfit every morning, have them pick an outfit for each day of the week on Sunday night. Theoretically, all my laundry will be washed, folded and put away. Ha! Buy a plastic container with drawers, and label each drawer with a day of the week. Have your child pick out their entire outfit for each day of the week. This takes away the stress of finding the matching sock that is always missing. Lastly, get everything prepared the night before if possible. I’m completely exhausted by the evening, but it makes a huge difference in the morning. Get book bags packed, shoes picked out and the table set for breakfast. Now if only I could follow my own advice! Until next time,

Marquita

While the name and look is fairly new, the ownership, management and commitment to quality and service has not changed. Formerly known as Bagel Bagel Café, The Speckled Egg Café / Trevett Family have been in the restaurant business at this location for over eight years and they are looking forward to serving the Southwest Florida community for many more to come. What some people may not know is that four generations of family have lived and worked in Fort Myers over the last 30 plus years. They value contribution to the community and are known to graciously donate both time and money to local charities. “We are excited to embark on this new adventure. One question we are asked a lot is if we still have

bagels. The answer is yes! And we offer two for one bagels every day after 2 p.m.,” states restaurant owner Bethany Trevett. On the menu you will find breakfast wraps, sandwiches and large platters among smaller sides such as home-made scones, muffins and quiches. For lunch they have everything from salads, hot and cold sandwiches and a different lunch special served on each day of the week. They also serve smoothies and have a delicious coffee bar where you can grab an espresso, coffee frapes, cappuccinos and lattes. For dessert there are colossal cookies, cakes and pies. They didn’t forget about the kids either – for a limited time, kids eat free on Tuesdays. The Speckled Egg Café is located at 13391 McGregor Blvd in Fort Myers. The Ultimate Playground of Party Treats

Leap Year Cake www.lovelyindeed.com

www.sugarfina.com

3 boxes of Super Moist White or Confetti Cake Mix - 16.25 oz box 3 cups white frosting (ready to spread or homemade) Mix and match candy Directions:

Mix and bake cake according to the instructions. Make 5 layers of cake using a 6inch round cake pan. After all cakes are cooled, carefully level off the top of each cake using the serrated knife. Put a few tablespoons of frosting into your small mixing bowls and color with food coloring as desired. Spread one color of frosting in a thin, even layer over your first layer of cake. Repeat until you have reached the top layer of your cake. Ice cake with a very thin layer of frosting so that all of the crumbs are contained. Once you’ve got a smooth crumb coat, place the cake in the fridge for an hour. Remove from the fridge and add a thicker layer of white frosting, smoothing it as best you can. Start decorating! Place larger candies first, scattering them to your liking. If you’re adding large candies to the sides of the cake, then add the small candy.

Bubbly Bears, Chocolate Confetti, Chocolate Sparkles, Champagne Bubbles, Confetti Dolci, Ice Cream Cones, Kyoto Blossoms, Mama & Baby Piglets, Matcha Green Tea Caramels, Pale Ale Pints, Piccolini, Sugar Cookies, Sugar Lips, Dark Chocolate Marshmallow Eggs All mix & match candy from www.sugarfina.com

Add lemon juice, zest, and two sweeteners to your liking.Add the pinch of salt and combine well. Taste the yogurt mixture to make sure it is lightly sweetened + lightly lemon flavored. Cover a baking sheet with foil, including the rim. Pour the yogurt mixture onto the baking sheet and smooth until even with a spatula. Top the yogurt mixture with sliced strawberries, dark chocolate bar, + pistachios. Freeze for two hours. Remove from freeze and let stand for one minute. Break the bark into small pieces of park. SUPERHero Adventure Publisher Picks

#tags, accessories and ideas: capes, masks, costumes, cardboard telephone booth, jumbo word cutouts, printables, temporary tattoos, party favor boxes Games: Superheroes and Villains

www.coolest-kid-birthday-parties.com

Form two groups - Superheroes and Villains. Give the Superheroes cans of silly string spray and send them after the villains. Then switch so everyone has a chance to be the Superheroes.

Phone Booth Dress-Up Relay www.queen-of-theme-party-games.com

It is important as a superhero to conceal your true identity. In this superhero party game the guest race to put on an oversized blazer, shoes and glasses and run to their teams phone booth to change out of the disguise and into the superhero cape, mask and boots. They then rush back to their team and remove the superhero costume and pass it to the next member of their team. The first team whose members complete the race wins!

Find the Villain

www.queen-of-theme-party-games.com

Print out individual pictures from the net of all the superheroes you can think of and their villains. Next, tape or glue the pictures onto index cards. Examples: Spiderman - Sandman, Green Goblin, doctor Octopus www.Jet.com Batman - Joker, Penguin, Mr. Freeze Superman - General Zod, Lex Luther, Ultraman Hint: if you Google the superheroes name with the word enemies you’ll find all the info you need. Search Google images for pictures. First hide the villain cards all around the playing area. Then have each player draw a superhero card. They must find the enemies of that superhero. You can provide names and pictures of the villains they are looking for to make it easier.

The PokemonGo Hunt ‘

#tags, accessories and ideas: hats, Pickachu ears, buckets, ping pong balls with black & red markers, blue, yellow, red & black balloons, character cutouts, printable bingo cards, temporary tattoos, plastic cell phone with Pokemon Pikachu & friends stickers on screen. games: www.thecreativepartymom.blogspot.com Pokeball Hunt

For this game, buy a bunch of ping pong balls on ebay and then use a red and black sharpie to color them to look like pokeballs. Then hid them all over the house (think Easter egg hunt) and have the kids find them. Whoever find the most pokeballs wins a prize.

Pikachu Stomp

Look for Pokemon tattoos at Oriental Trading Co. It should be less than $5 for 72 tattoos. Fill a bunch of balloons with air and put one tattoo in each balloon. Make sure that you only used one Pikachu tattoo. Have the kids stomp on the balloons to pop them. Whoever popped the balloon with the Pikachu tattoo inside of it wins a prize. This game is awesome because even if you are not a winner, the child still gets to keep the pokemon tattoos that are in the balloons.

Petting Zoo Edison & Ford Winter Estates 2350 McGregor Blvd., Fort Myers 1 - 4 p.m. The petting zoo has been such a hit with area children that Edison & Ford Winter Estates will have the animals back onsite at the end of the month. Kids will have the chance to pet a goat, duck, chicken, pig, sheep, calf and rabbit. This is a great learning experience for children that may not otherwise have exposure to farm animals. Thomas Edison had several animals at his winter estate. Like most working farms, he had dogs and cats, plus a cow, horse and many chickens. Reportedly, he drank a lot of milk so he purchased a cow in 1908. He used a horse to pull the lawn mower and for transportation into town. He also had a lot of chickens and sold the eggs at the nearby market. In 1917, Edison had more than 60 chickens living on the property. The petting zoo will be set up in the Heritage Gardens at the Garden Shoppe. Seating is available on the nearby covered museum porch that has ceiling fans. Parking is available in the main parking lot off McGregor Boulevard and along Larchmont Avenue. Cost is $1 per child. For additional information, call 239-334-7419. “Genetics and lifestyle both play a role in childhood obesity,” Dr. Drago says. “Children are more likely to be overweight if their parents are overweight.” The risk of obesity is about 9% for children whose parents are lean, but 60% to 80% for those whose parents are obese. “Parents really need to be role models and make healthy choices, both with food choices and exercise,” Dr. Drago says. “Children see what their parents do and make similar choices. When they learn to make healthy choices, it’s easy to maintain those habits throughout a lifetime.”

Ways to stay on track with a healthy lifestyle • Develop a meal plan • Be positive about veggies • Have a “no, thank you” bite rule, where children must try a fruit or vegetable before politely declining if they do not like the taste • Hide veggies (smoothies, one-dish meals) • Learn and be aware of portion sizes • Dine out occasionally; encourage healthy choices when you do

Heat-related emergencies on the rise in SW Florida Signs and symptoms, what to do, general precautions

As temperatures continue to soar, the Southwest Florida sunshine and high humidity are causing more people to visit local hospital emergency centers this summer. From May through July, Lee Memorial Health System hospitals saw a 48% (combined) increase in heat-related emergency center visits over the same period in 2015. Local visits have ranged the full gamut of heat-related syndromes from heat cramps (muscles), to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. There are two kinds of heat exhaustion: water depletion and salt depletion, both caused by overexposure to heat. If untreated, heat exhaustion can turn to heat stroke, a more severe condition that can damage vital organs or cause death. Watch for these signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion:

• Dark-colored urine (a sign of dehydration) • Dizziness • Fainting • Headache • Muscle or abdominal cramps • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea • Profuse sweating • Rapid heartbeat Anyone experiencing these symptoms should get out of the heat immediately, if possible; seek shade if air conditioning is not available. • Drink plenty of fluid (avoid caffeine and alcohol) • Remove any tight or unnecessary clothing • Take a cool shower, bath, or sponge bath • Sit near a fan or apply cold towels

If symptoms persist for more than 15 minutes after these measures, seek medical treatment. Children under the age of four, and adults 65 and older are more susceptible to heatrelated problems because their bodies do not adjust to higher temperatures as quickly. People with medical conditions, especially diabetes, or taking certain medications, need to be aware of an increased risk for heatrelated illness. Talk to your doctor about your risks and take precautions when in the heat. When you are in the sun and heat, here are some general precautions to take: • Wear sunscreen • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a hat • Drink plenty of fluids
