Cabana Bay Beach Resort The Orlando hotel we keep returning to
By Mandy Carter
Last month, I shared with you some fun Orlando attractions that do not involve walking into a theme park. So, this month I want to tell you a great place to stay: Universal’s Cabana Bay, the hotel we keep going back to. If you’re looking for a fun, themed, convenient and budget-friendly place to stay while visiting Orlando, you have to check out Cabana Bay Beach Resort. The entire Universal Resort is designed with a fun retro theme that takes you back to the iconic beach hotels of the 1950s and ‘60s. I have stayed at this hotel 5 times in addition to our most
recent trip. The main lobby building is home to the Bayliner Diner - a cafeteria style restaurant, Starbuck's, Galaxy Bowl- a ten lanes of bowling alley with a full table service restaurant & bar. You can work out at the complimentary Jack Lane Physical Fitness Studio, shop all things Universal, or conquer the universe at the Game-O-R Our room at Cabana Bay Resort was a family suite - pool view room, which meant it was in the Castaway Building and looked over the main Cabana pool where we could feel the outside energy. The view was awesome, and the room was simple but spacious. The family suites have a few addition from the standard rooms: - They sleep up to six people comfortably (two queen beds and a pullout sofa)
- Compartmentalized bathroom - Mini kitchen with small refrigerator, microwave and sink - Two flat screen TVs From hula hoop contests to poolside movies, you’ll find something fun to do poolside for the whole family. In addition to the two large pools, there is a lazy river, splash pad and a waterslide. Fire pits, yard games and lots of poolside seating perfect for soaking up the warm Florida sunshine. Also, Cabana Bay is a smart choice for a family planning to spend a few days at Universal Parks. By staying at the hotel, all guests have early access into the theme park. There is a walking path to the free shuttles that run every 15 minutes to and from Universal Parks /City Walk. If you are planning a family road trip to Orlando, take a look at Cabana Bay!

Let’sParty! Bring On The Mess!
Let’s be honest, getting super messy is every child’s dream activity. As long as they are wet, sticky and dirty all is well in their world! This year’s trending birthday party theme is all about the mess! The messier the better! On their special day, allow your child to do some things that are usually looked upon all year long as “bad choices.” Who knew bad could be so good?
1. Whip it, Throw it & Taste it Nothing says fun like a food fight! Bring on the goggles and garbage bag ponchos and let the war begin! Jello, pudding, peas, spaghetti noodles, popcorn, basically any food that’s messy and lightweight will do the trick! Too messy? Try “Find the Gummy Bear” game. Give each child a plate piled high with whipped cream with 3 gummy bears hidden inside. The first person to find all of their gummy bears wins. No hands allowed!
2. Color Blast Bash Color runs are all the rage recently. Why not take this concept and “run” with it. How perfect would it be to incorporate a bit of color in your child’s celebratation. An edible painting station can also be added for that one of a kind tasty surprise. Watch how Sprinkles, M&M’s and Nerds turn an ordinary painting into an exceptional mouth-watering work of art! 14 - September 2019
3. Splash, Squirt & Slide Beat the heat during these hot Florida afternoons!! Water balloons with diluted non-toxic paint can be tossed or used as fun Pinatas. Non-toxic paint is also perfect for squirt gun wars and slip and slides! Don’t want them to slide in paint? Never underestimate the power of pudding, jello or whipped cream for this activity too. A yummy slide, is an awesome slide!
4. Sparkly, Sloppy Slime Is your child slime obsessed? Go ahead and be the coolest mom and “slime” them! So many oooey-gooey options! Colored, glitter, and even glow-in-the-dark slime guarantees every child will walk away happy! Making it is half the fun! Experiment with different colors and textures....no hard and fast rules, just fun! Family News

Snacks aren’t all bad By Lee Health Forget what you think you know: Snacks aren’t all bad. They can actually boost your energy between meals and supply essential vitamins and minerals. The trick, of course, is that snackers need to choose wisely. Make smart choices and be sure to manage the rest of your meals during the day.
Here are some things to remember:
1. Don’t skip breakfast! Adults need energy to get through the day, and kids and grandkids need fuel for their brains to learn. Remember lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends a breakfast burrito with scrambled eggs, low-fat cheese, salsa, and a whole wheat tortilla. Try a parfait with low-fat plain yogurt, fruit, and whole grain cereal. 2. Avoid sweet cereals, cookies, and brownies. Instead, go with grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein. Try raw veggies with low-fat cottage cheese for a satisfying crunch or a tablespoon of peanut butter with an apple instead of potato chips.
42 - September 2019
3. Snack only when you’re hungry, and resist the urge to munch when you’re board, frustrated, or stressed. The AND recommends walking the dog, working in the garden, or enjoying another hobby instead of reaching into the candy bowl. 4. Plan ahead: Adults may need a snack after work, and kids and grandkids will definitely want a snack after school. Keep a variety of nutritious supplies on hand such as whole-grain crackers and low-fat cheese. Have fruit
Some more snack ideas courtesy of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:
• One tablespoon of peanut butter spread on apple slices • One cup of tomato soup with five whole-grain crackers • Veggie pizzas • Three cups of air-popped popcorn sprinkled with three tablespoons of grated parmesan cheese • Trail mix: 20 almonds, a miniature box of raisins, and ¼ cup of sunflower seeds Family News

Free autism screening for young children Sept. 27 Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, in partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Florida, offers a free monthly autism spectrum disorder screening for toddlers 18 months to five years of age. The next screening on the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile will be held on Friday, Sept. 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Family health Centers, 316 Del Prado Blvd., Cape Coral. It is estimated that one in every 68 children is diagnosed with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder,
making it more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. Medical consultants for the project stress that an early diagnosis can make a vast difference for toddlers and their families. They say early intensive behavioral intervention can make an immense difference not just in the development of the child, but in their families as well. A physician referral is not required. Appointments are not necessary, but parents are encouraged to call 239-343-6838 to schedule or obtain more information.
