Socks For School The Socks for School fundraiser ran throughout the month of November and consisted of members donating their lunch periods to sell socks to students in the cafeteria and taking them home to their friends and families. Through this fundraiser we had the goal of selling 500 packages of socks in order to send a girl in Africa to private school for an entire year. We chose to sponsor 12 year-old Leticia from Uganda and supply her with an advanced education. The fundraiser closed out by completing our goal and we were successfully able to send Leticia to receive her education.
A Step Into Hollywood STORY BY KATELYN PASIERB
It is every child’s dream to grow up and be famous. Whether it’s an astronaut, president, or even a chef, each child longs for the fame and fortune that accompanies the spotlight. One such career that many kids dream of having is that of an actor. Constantly surrounded by cameras and curious people, actors embrace the center of attention, a joy most kids would love to have. This year, the Key Club district has announced that its annual LEDCON celebration would have the theme of Hollywood. With this theme, the Key Club board members have the unique opportunity to utilize all of the resources possible to make it a night us key clubbers will never forget. For the few nights on the red carpet, some ideas to focus in on could be the setting and music. In every story, the setting is key to providing both background and imagery to convey a realistic meaning. For the theme this year, Hollywood radiates red, gold, silver, and shiny. A possible idea would be to roll out a long red carpet that key clubbers walk up as they enter the hotel for the weekend ahead. As they enter, there could be a Hollywood sign in front that welcomes them to the premises. In addition, you could dim the lights and have disco balls be the key lighting. Not only would this demonstrate the theme but it gets key clubbers involved the minute they step foot into LEDCON. Another idea would be to utilize the sit-down luncheons as a way to convey the importance of the theme. At each table, you could have a microphone statue in the middle with a gold letter attached that appears similar to the famous award-winning announcement cards. Additionally, you could focus the color scheme to mostly red and gold with a touch of silver to break up the constant color scheme. In addition, you could have a designated area set up with a LEDCON backdrop, red carpet, and flash lighting to make it appear as though cameras are taking pictures of those in front of the backdrop. This could be a place where key clubbers can take pictures and demonstrate their love for the weekend and celebration of the new year to come.Music is also key to ensuring the audience is captivated by the theme. It draws listeners in, making or breaking the overall experience. Some ideas for music would be recent popular songs that have just the right step to walk to along the red carpet. An example of this includes Poker Face by Lady Gaga. With just the right beat, it offers the audience a chance to jazz their way down the red carpet in style. Moreover, another song could be The Nights by Avicii. This song is an example of an artistic, well-known tune that listeners can walk, dance, and jam out to.With an event such as LEDCON, pinning down the theme in a correct manner is always difficult. With limited budgets, time, and effort, it requires a sense of efficiency and delegation that challenges all those involved. Despite this challenge, each year the staff astounds the audience by pulling off an amazing display and show. By focusing in on possibly some of these ideas, the Hollywood theme will shine bright into the future of fellow Key Club members.

Thanks and Giving This is a season of thanks and giving, where we give thanks for what we already have and give to those in need. Mansfield Legacy Key Club is doing just that. Through helping pack bags of food through Feed the Kids, we help provide those who may not have anything to eat for Thanksgiving a meal that they can share with their family. This is what this time of year is for: helping others, realizing how much we have to be grateful for, and giving back to the community. Here’s how Mansfield Legacy Key Club is doing just that. Last year we sold socks for the Socks for Legs organization and purchased a leg for a child in Africa. This year we are doing the same fundraiser, but instead, we are raising money in order to send a girl in Africa to school. We sell lunch at all lunches for the next two weeks. Mansfield Legacy Key Club hopes to sell enough to be able to send that girl to school. This is one of the ways that Mansfield Legacy Key Club is giving back in this season of thanks and giving. Mansfield Legacy Key Club is also participating in Mansfields’s Common Ground Network Feed the Kids Program to provide Thanksgiving meals to local students and families. Another way that I will continue to serve over this semester is by participating in Mansfield’s Common Ground Network Feed the Kids program. The program provides meals to MISD students who may not even be able to afford food during weekends when they are not receiving breakfast and lunch from the school. Participating in Feed the Kids is certainly not a first (or last) for me. At the last Feed the Kids I attended, we opened and unpacked boxes of prepackaged food to be staged for the volunteers coming later that night to pack the individual bags of food for the children in need. We prepared the food for over 400 bags of food to be distributed later that day. There are always so many volunteers at the event to make it run smoothly and efficiently. It makes me so excited to see so many other youth and students alike working alongside each other to benefit those less fortunate in the surrounding Mansfield community. It will be impactful to prepare Thanksgiving meals for those same students so that they can enjoy a nice meal for Thanksgiving.

"Our mission is simple: Build a sociallyconscious generation of young people who END the global water crisis. We do this by educating students about it and activating them to rock the clean water cause & build real water projects all over the world. Why Water? Health and Sanitation: Waterborne diseases kill more children every single year than AIDS, Malaria, and all world violence combined. Small children typically do not have strong enough immune systems to fight diseases like cholera, dysentery, or schistosomiasis." From the Thirst Project Mission Statement
The Mansfield Legacy Key Club meets every Tuesday at 3:05 in our head sponsor Ms. Rema’s room. This year, our club has decided to implement different and fun icebreakers, including games and guest speakers. This month alone, we have had two important guest speakers and a game. The first speaker we had this month was the Mansfield Legacy PTSA Vice-President Cyndi Chlup. She spoke for approximately 5 minutes about how the Parent Teacher Student Association engages in service frequently, her life as a foster mom, and the scholarships that the PTSA offers for seniors. Ms. Chlup has helped do great things for our school and community by serving teachers’ breakfast, hosting school dances, and building better relationships between the school board and our school. Our next speaker was Dr. Diane Patrick, a former Texas member of the House of Representatives. She talked for about 10 minutes about her experience as a member of the House and as a politician. Dr. Patrick also emphasized that each and every one of us have a “choice” to do what is right. In her speech, she explained that choice was an acronym. C stands for caring, h stands for helpfulness, o stands for opportunity, i stands for integrity, c stands for chance, and e stands for excel. As a club, we were able to learn from Dr. Patrick’s experiences and willingness to share with an open heart. We also built a better relationship with our school by inviting and hosting our principal for the entire meeting. In addition to hearing about her acronym, Dr. Patrick discussed her involvement in passing legislation to prevent bullying and to add endorsements in schools such as our own. Her passion that she shared with us was inspirational for all our Key Clubbers, sponsors, and administrators alike. In addition to having several amazing speakers this past month, we have played a few fun games. As an icebreaker, we played a game involving everyone holding hands and passing four hula hoops around in a complete circle without letting go of each other’s hands. Two hula hoops started on one side and two started on another. Some people had a harder time passing through the hula hoop because they had two hula hoops at the same time, which happened to be hilarious for everyone to do and watch. The point of this game was to emphasize the importance of communication, by answering questions like “what is better, legs or arms first?” and addressing the significance of acceptance, by acknowledging the stupidity of “I’m stuck.” statements. However, all in all, we had a great time getting to know each other in a positive atmosphere.I am so grateful for the compassion and positivity of the Mansfield Legacy Key Club that can easily be seen in our community and school through service, our interactions with guests, and our interactions with each other.
Yours in Service,
Camilla Brown
Happy Holidays!
