Study programmes

Study programmes are high-quality learning programmes for 16 to 18 year olds. They aim to provide the best opportunity to progress onto higher level courses or into employment.

If you are 19+ you may still be able to complete work experience and English and/or maths if you wish to, but it is not compulsory.

Introduction

Total Qualification Time

All students, whether new to the College or returning on a progression course, will undertake a probationary period for the first six weeks of their programme. During this time, attendance, punctuality, attitude, attainment and application towards study will be monitored. A final decision as to the most appropriate level and outcome will be discussed with you towards the end of your probationary period.

Many Engineering qualifications now have stated Total Qualification Time. This is a guide to the amount of time you as a student are expected to undertaking studies out of the classroom/workshop environment. This may include guided homework, revision and independent study towards your qualification.

Technical certificates and advanced technical diplomas A number of Engineering study programmes now contain technical certificates at level 2 or advanced technical diplomas at level 3 as their main vocational qualification. These types of qualification are assessed by exams, practical synoptic testing, controlled assessments, and by completing mandatory employer engagement activities. Assessment dates are set by the awarding organisations.

ProPortal/My Plan All full-time students will be given access to ProPortal/My Plan. This is an electronic resource where you will be able to access information on your progress and student reports etc. You will need to access this routinely throughout this year and your learning coach will explain how to do this.

Level 2 higher project Dependant on individual qualifications on entry, you may be also be required to undertake a level 2 higher project or similar, as part of your vocational study programme. This is a free standing qualification that allows students to create an extended piece of work that can complement their studies. Tutor assistance will be provided, and there is also an element of independent work required to achieve this qualification.

English and maths All study programmes include English and maths. If you have achieved a grade 3/4 or above in English and/or maths you are likely to be placed initially on level 2 programme and undertake your GCSE re-sit. If you have a grade 1 or 2 in these subjects, you will likely be placed initially on a level 1 study programme and study functional skills as a stepping stone to GCSE.

Work experience and industrial placement Work experience is an integral part of your study programme.

Depending on the level of study you are undertaking the amount of work experience hours undertaken will vary.

Level 1 - world of work (WOW)

Level 3 industrial placement

WOW aims to help young people build on experience and upgrade their skill set.

Assisting individuals towards achieving independent work experience.

Level 3 students may undertake an extended work experience known as an industrial placement. Individuals will complete approximately 315 hours of industrial placement in addition to their vocational study programme. This may be completed by block release, day release or a combination of both with a local employer.

WOW is a bespoke structured work experience programme comprising of three main elements: team building, skills development and sector-based/ community enterprise and social action projects. The programme provides opportunities for students undertaking Entry and level 1 study programmes, and those with additional needs to develop the skills and qualities employers are looking for, including; self-confidence, resilience, problem solving and a sense of community. Upon completion of the programme students will receive WOW certificates detailing work experience hours achieved.

Level 2 and 3 - work experience Level 2 and 3 students must undertake work experience with an external provider. Actual hours undertaken will vary depending on individual timetables.

This may be in the form of a residential and more information will be given at a later stage.

The College has successfully engaged with a work experience programme in Seville in conjunction with erasmus plus for a number of years. Students have the opportunity to live and work in Seville for four weeks to undertake work experience as part of their study programme. More information on this opportunity will be given throughout your course.

Attendance and punctuality The teaching day starts from 8.30am for levels 1, 2 and 3. Learning sessions are timetabled for practical or theory as necessary. Three breaks are normally timetabled during the day. The first break is taken at 10am or 10.30am.

Other breaks are timetabled to suit individual programmes.

Attendance patterns vary depending on the programme being studied.

All applicants should note that due to the nature of study programmes, an individual’s timetable may be scheduled across five days.

Students are expected to maintain 95% attendance as a minimum requirement across all timetabled sessions. Further sessions for assessment and progression will be added which students are also expected to attend.

Student punctuality is also recorded and linked to progress, both internally and into employment.

Welfare advice

The curriculum area of engineering is proactive with both encouraging and promoting student competitions. These can be either regional or national events.

Our team of dedicated welfare advisors can offer you information and advice on the types of support available.

You may be required to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) work wear such as protective clothing (overalls) and safety boots. More detail will be given when you come along to our experience day in June.

Exam resits If you have to resit an exam you will be required to pay the applicable fee.

This fee must be received in order to confirm a re-sit booking. Your tutor will explain the procedure at the time if you need to re-sit any of your exams.

Basic stationery items such as pens, pencils, ring binders and writing paper will also be required.

Advanced learner loans If you are aged 19 (from 1 August 2020) or over and want to study a new qualification at Leicester College, now could be the perfect time thanks to an advanced learner loan.

These loans help you to cover the cost of your course fees – whether that’s a full or part-time course or training at levels 3 to 6. And you won’t even have to start paying anything back until you’re earning over £21,000 a year.

Who is eligible for an advanced learner loan?

You can apply for this loan if you are: • aged 19 or above on the first day of your course • studying or training on an eligible course at level 3* to 6

If you are 19 to 23 and are studying your first full level 3, you may be able to get a tuition fee remission to help pay for your course.

Course start. Typically the first week will be an induction to your course.
