2016 A YEAR IN REVIEW

#BackingTheBlues April 2016

TEDx Leicester October 2016

2016 was a year in which Leicester was in the international spotlight – again. This time Leicester City Football Club won the Premier League, backed by Leicester College all the way. In celebration of the event, students and staff wore blue (or the LCFC kit); 600 blue balloons were released; we hosted a football tournament; and painted faces.

Leicester College was a proud sponsor when the city hosted its second TED talk, “Every Journey Matters”. TED is a prestigious international conference which allows speakers to share their technology, design, scientific, cultural, and academic expertise with a global audience.

HND Travel and Tourism Students Bring Visitors to Leicester May 2016 The students presented Dragons’ Den-style pitches to Leicester Shire Promotions at the city’s Hilton Hotel. All three pitches were highly commended and the students’ ideas will be used to drive tourism to Leicester.

Team England Foundation Degree in Dance student Sophia Michiko credits her time on the course with her exceptional professional success: “The dance styles I learnt [at Leicester College] helped me get a place in Team England and represent the country in the World Championship in Florida.”

#LCPlatform16 June 2016 The summer term saw the annual Foundation Degree in Fashion and Footwear students’ final shows – a culmination of talent and thousands of hours of hard work.

Congratulations Graduates! November 2016 Graduation happened in fitting style in November in Leicester’s impressive Empire venue with entertainment provided by students enrolled on College music courses.

£1.6m Construction Centre Opens November 2016 Sir Peter Soulsby, Mayor of Leicester, attended the opening of this important new building during the Leicester Business Festival. The College already works with 215 construction companies and 156 self-employed contractors per annum, but the new facilities will assure future growth and highquality apprenticeships.

Analogue Photography Exhibition December 2016 Just before Christmas, local analogue photography lovers Leicester Lo-Fi Photography hosted an exhibition of work by the talented Access to Digital Photography students in their gallery space.

Affordable high quality learning Our fees are significantly more affordable than many universities’ so you benefit from a great value course and the excellent teaching and learning you would expect from Leicester College. By studying with us and learning on your doorstep, you can save money you might have spent by living away from home while enjoying the benefits of a university level course.

A high standard of teaching Our teaching staff are industry professionals with a real passion for their subjects. Many of our classrooms/workshops are equipped with specialist equipment and technology to ensure your learning meets industry needs.

Flexible study to suit you We offer courses on both a full and part-time basis so you can choose the best way to study to fit in with your life. Whatever programme or mode of study you choose, we will provide you with guidance. Our “two plus one model” of two years’ full time study at the College on a foundation degree or HND with a one year top up can still result in you achieving an honours degree in three years.

Additional support Students at Leicester College benefit from a personal tutor and access to additional learning support to help with coursework. If you have additional needs such as dyslexia, you’ll receive extra one-to-one support to help you on the course.

Research and Scholarship Leicester College is committed to improving the undergraduate student experience by engaging staff and students in research and scholarship. We are a lead college in the national Association of Colleges (AoC) Scholarship Project, which aims to enhance scholarship within college Higher Education.

What is scholarship? Scholarship is essentially about learning at a high level. As an undergraduate student you will develop a range of higher level skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking and analysis, synthesising information, reflection and evaluation. You might develop these skills by: • Exhibiting artistic/creative work • Performance of music or dramatic work • Working with a community group on a social action project • Attending a conference or seminar • Carrying out a research project • Working with a local employer on a collaborative project • Helping develop course assessments.

Scholarship and Employability The skills you develop through scholarship just happen to be those that can help make you more employable: the ability to research, question, solve problems and make informed judgements being just some of them. Employers are looking for graduates who can demonstrate that they have this set of valuable skills and that they are able to apply these in different situations.

Staff scholarship Our lecturers are involved in ongoing scholarship in their disciplines making them experts in their fields. They also carry out research into teaching and learning methods resulting in a better learning experience for our students.

Celebrating scholarship We encourage our lecturers and students to share their work with others and there are opportunities to showcase projects at local, regional and national conferences.

Leicester College kick off a European collaboration through photography Leicester College lecturer Paul O’Leary has launched a photography festival called Photocitizens with collaborators from around Europe and the aim to take it global. Photocitizens International Photography Festival was established in 2015, with the aim to connect undergraduate and postgraduate photography students across the world with international photography festivals, galleries and art organisations. The concept for 2016/2017 is National Identity. The project seeks to to explore labels that define the idea of national identity, how people describe themselves and the signs and symbols that they use as a group or individuals to portray their identity. Paul O’Leary, Programme Lead for HE Photography said: “with an ever changing political landscape, notions of cultural identity, home and belonging have been brought to the fore of our social conscience. As image-makers our job is often to highlight other people’s stories.” Zsolt Batori, Artistic Director for PH21 Gallery in Budapest, Hungary said: “as a photography gallery that is recognised internationally we are happy to be able to help young photographers gain global experience and exposure.” Marco Rapaccini, Director of Officine Fotografiche in Rome, Italy said: “we value international collaborations as a unique source of growth. Photocitizens is one of those projects you can’t say no to, as they tackle the human issues lying behind visual arts.”

Higher Apprenticeships There is more than one way to learn at degree level‌ Higher apprenticeships are a great alternative to full-time undergraduate study. They offer you the opportunity to start your career whilst training at degree level and earning a salary. The number of industries recognising the importance of higher apprenticeships is ever growing with new apprenticeship frameworks (courses) regularly being developed. Leicester College is the largest provider of apprenticeship training in Leicester. The College offers a number of higher apprenticeships including built environment, business and professional administration and care, and leadership management. If you are keen to start climbing the career ladder, unleash your entrepreneurial spirit or gain valuable work experience whilst still training, then higher apprenticeships are seriously worth considering. They offer an apprenticeship programme, enabling you to gain the higher level skills required by employees. The government is spending a lot of time and energy in highlighting the importance of apprenticeships to businesses and their impact on the lives of young people. It is committed to supporting 3 million apprenticeship starts by 2020.

In 2015/16, 786 students aged 16+ began their apprenticeships with Leicester College. That includes those taking higher-level apprenticeships which can lead to degree-level qualifications.

TOURISM AND EVENTS

Tourism and Events According to the Leicester Mercury, 2015 was the best-ever year for tourism in Leicester, thanks to Leicester City football club and Richard III. Visitors to our city contributed nearly £1.7 billion into the local economy during this time - a 6.6 per cent increase on £1.571 billion in 2014. It’s a great time to go into the industry: 1,800 new jobs have been created in the tourism sector in Leicester since 2012, when Richard III’s remains were found under the Grey Friars car park in the city centre.

Equally, the events industry is also experiencing phenomenal growth and is currently worth £42.3bn to the UK economy and supports 570,000 full-time jobs. The appetite for new and exciting events continues to increase and subsequently the need for people with high levels of management skills and knowledge of the events industry is of paramount importance to develop this further. There’s never been a better time to get your qualification with us.

Overall, tourism in Leicester and Leicestershire has seen seven years of consecutive growth, and the sector now supports more than 21,441 jobs locally.

Funding and fees With the cost of going to university rising, it makes sense to stay local to study for a university-level qualification. How much will it cost? Full-time students Our tuition fees for UK and EU students studying full-time university level courses in 2017/18 were £6,000 per year. This is substantially cheaper than most universities which are charging £9,250 per year. Tuition fees for courses run with De Montfort University were also £6,000 for the same academic year. These fees should be used as guidance for the 2018/19 year.

Part-time students University-level courses in 2016/17 ranged from £1,400 to £4,000 per year, dependent on the number of module credits delivered each year. This is also substantially lower than most universities. If you do not already possess an HE level qualification you could be eligible for a tuition fee loan resulting in no upfront fees. Tuition fees for courses run with our De Montfort University also range from £1,400 to £4,000 for the same academic year. These fees should be used as guidance for the 2018/19 year.

What financial support is available? Even if your place hasn’t been confirmed, you need to apply for your higher education funding as soon as possible. If you are eligible you can apply for a tuition fee loan, resulting in your fees being paid directly to the College on your behalf. You can apply for your tuition fees loan and maintenance loan online at: gov.uk/studentfinance This loan is only repaid once you have completed your course and you are earning more than £21,000. At this point repayments will be taken directly out of your monthly salary.

Welfare Support Welfare advisers at the College can advise you about any further support which may be available. They can be contacted at Student Services at Abbey Park Campus or Freemen’s Park Campus.

A university education at a fraction of the cost: You can study for the first two years of your degree with us, and pay just £6,000 a year in fees (as opposed to £9,250+ at a university).

Guide to qualifications The term “higher education” is used to describe courses of study that fall within the government’s Framework for Higher Education Qualifications in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (FHEQ).

The majority of higher education courses at the College fall under the FHEQ intermediate category which we refer to as university-level qualifications.

LEVEL

FHEQ Level

Certificate (C)

Intermediate (I)

Honours (H)

Masters (M)

Doctoral (D)

Level 4 These qualifications are work-related (vocational) higher education qualifications. While bachelors degrees tend to focus on gaining knowledge, HNCs are designed to give you the skills to put that knowledge to effective use in a particular job.

Level 5 These qualifications are designed to equip you for a particular area of work – as well as giving you the general skills that are useful in any type of job. They’re university-level qualifications, and are designed with work in mind, with the help of employers from that sector.

Level 6 These qualifications are designed to give you a thorough understanding of a subject. They help you develop your analytical, intellectual and essay or dissertation writing skills. You’ll also have much more of a say about the direction your learning takes than you’ve had previously.

Level 7 These qualifications are of academic study. They can be research based, a taught course, or a mixture of both, and will take at least 12 months of full-time study to complete. You may also have to submit a dissertation at the end of your course.

Level 8 This level gives you the opportunity to undertake an original piece of research. It will usually take at least three years of full-time study to complete. Many doctorate courses lead to a qualification such as a Doctor of Philosophy – a PhD or DPhil.

Student Risk Assessments Leicester College has a legal obligation known as 'duty of care' to do everything that is reasonable to protect students, staff and visitors from potential harm, and to ensure that support needs for students are met. Risk assessment is part of the College’s safeguarding framework; it is part of the admissions process, and a requirement for all prospective and current students at Leicester College. The purpose of risk assessment is to identify and assess any student whose known behaviour and/or criminal record indicates that they may be a risk to other students, staff, themselves, visitors or the College environment. The process also helps to identify students who could benefit from support whilst they are at College, and we have a range of support for our students from mentoring to counselling. Risk assessments are one way in which the College works to provide a safe, supported and inclusive environment for all people within the College.

As part of the College’s risk assessment procedures, applicants/students are required to declare if they have an unspent criminal record*, including any pending court cases or if they are charged with any criminal offence, either at application stage or during their course. Students on a course*, or applying for a course that involves a work placement with young and/or vulnerable people are required to disclose spent and unspent convictions and cautions that would not be filtered in line with current guidance. Students who do not declare may be removed from their course. All risk assessment information is held and processed with strict confidentiality in accordance with the Data Protection and Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975, (as amended 2013). * The amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975 (2013) provide that certain spent convictions and cautions are protected, and are not subject to disclosure, and therefore cannot be taken into account. Guidance and criteria on the filtering of these cautions and convictions can be found on the government’s Disclosure and Barring Service website. The Risk Assessment Team will only take into account convictions and cautions that aren’t protected. If you are applying to study on a DMUawarded programme your application will also be considered by the DMU Safeguarding Team. If you are unsure how a criminal record may affect your course, or whether a conviction is 'spent', contact the Risk Assessment Team on: 0116 224 2225 or 0116 224 2138.
