The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001.

Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.

Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections.

We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Inverleigh’s own John Clifford Peel – WW1 aviator and inspiration for the Royal Flying Doctor Service Wednesday 4th May 2022, 7.00 pm for 7.30 pm start Free Inverleigh Public Hall. Light supper to follow.

The Inverleigh Historical Society, in association with the Western Front Association, Central Victorian Branch, are pleased to present a free public talk on the life and legacy of John Clifford Peel.

A native of Inverleigh, “Cliff ” Peel enlisted in the fledgling Australian Flying Corps in 1917 and later flew against the Germans on the Western Front.

Sadly, Cliff never made it home to Inverleigh. His legacy however lives on – in the form of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

The Inverleigh Community Plan Survey was developed by the Inverleigh Progress Association (IPA) with the purpose of surveying the Inverleigh Community on local matters. The survey will form the basis of the Inverleigh Community Plan that is to be developed.

The survey was conducted over the month of November in 2021 and was published on the IPA website (www.inverleigh.org.au). It was advertised widely in the Leigh News publication, the Leigh News Facebook page, emailed to subscribers of the Leigh News, posters were displayed in Inverleigh and flyers were widely distributed.

The survey itself consists of 61 questions and addresses areas relating to: • demographics • livability • community safety • the environment and landscape • facilities and infrastructure • sports and recreation • Inverleigh businesses • social and inclusion The survey was completed by 221 respondents from a range of demographics. The data for each question has been collated in this document and is represented in a way that best fits the question. A range of graphics are used to present the data along with the collation of written responses for the open questions.

6 Leigh News Geelong and District Carriage Drivers

On Saturday 12th, Sunday 13th & Monday 14th of March 2022 the Geelong and District Carriage Drivers hosted the Hanns Horse Transport 2022 Victorian Combined Driving Championships at Leighdale Equestrian Centre (Teesdale).

Over 50 entries were received with entries coming from, across Victoria, NSW, SA & Tasmania.

Friday saw competitors arrive and a first vet inspection took place. Where horses’ heartrates and soundness were checked all horses passed the initial inspection and were ready to participate in the dressage on Saturday.

Saturday- 4 judges judged dressage across the day.

Perfect weather with the sun shining.

• The best novice Dressage test was by Rodney Lane driving Duckponds Lucy Van Pelt • The best Intermediate Dressage test was by Dawn Walter driving Naringalook Monty • The best Open Dressage test was by Michelle Jones Driving Lucy • The best Multiple Dressage test was by Rachel Haslau driving a pair of ponies.

Many spectators attended.

Sunday was marathon day, the course at Leighdale Equestrian Centre and the surrounding tracks are quite undulating so drivers knew they had their work cut out for them.

The course took place on the surrounding roads and through beautiful Australian bush tracks.

There were 8 Marathon Obstacles which included a water MO and several that were on the side of hills.

The course was set with almost all MO’S surrounding a large spectator viewing area, so spectators were fortunate to be able to watch the action up close. Again the sun was shining and all competitors had completed when a large storm hit the venue early in the evening.

by Lyn Callighan driving Shepherds Hill Denis.

The best Multiple Marathon was driven by Rachel Haslau driving a pair of ponies.

The storm on Sunday night settled the dust on the arena that was set for the Cones course on Monday, the course was a challenge and only 5 double clear rounds were achieved for the day.

A special mention to Geelong and District Carriage Drivers Life Member Rodney Lane who had the best novice Dressage, Marathon, Cones and Overall score for the weekend. The Club are very proud of a hardworking member achieving such great results at their home grounds.

Carriage drivers, range in age from 6 years old to 80 +, some have been , or still are, riders whilst others have not had anything to do with horses but want to get into the action after seeing the sport. You can start out in a basic jogger on motorbike wheels and progress to purpose made combined driving vehicles (2 or 4 wheeled), show vehicles, such as viceroys, or a restored jinker or sulky.

The type of horse or pony which can enjoy driving is vast: miniatures, Welsh Ponies & Cobs, Hackney, Australian Ponies, Shetlands, Friesians, crossbreds; as long as they have the right temperament any breed can do well.

Classes/competitions are separated by height, experience and the number of horses pulling the carriage. Any colour is welcome; the only restriction is age for combined driving where the horse or pony must be 4 years old before competing. The life of many a family pony or horse has been extended by taking up carriage driving as they can also enjoy the new challenges driving provides.

Golden Plains Stories – Focus on Inverleigh Started Work has started on preparing a mix of video, documents, photos, interviews and stories showcasing Inverleigh today and over time. This is part of a project to create a digital museum about Golden Plains Shire townships developed

by Dr Li Ping Thong of RMIT, Golden Plains Shire Arts, Culture and Heritage Advisors and members of Golden Plains local communities, funded by a grant from the Public Records Office of Victoria.

We started with the questions: ‘What is special and distinctive about Inverleigh?’, ‘What would be interesting for people to know about the history of our town and district?’, ‘What things are common to many areas in the Shire?’

‘How do we represent Inverleigh effectively when we can’t cover everything?’ and ‘Are there some areas to focus on for starters?’

We took Li Ping for a tour of Inverleigh recently, telling some of the stories and looking for filming sites. What came through loud and clear is what a wonderful peaceful town we live in, how bustling the main street is on the weekend, what an asset the rivers and tracks are, how our com-

Community consultation on the development of the Hesse Rural Health Strategic Plan Register for a Tea Talk session with Hesse Board Directors In 2021 the Board of Hesse Rural Health (Hesse) commenced its strategic planning process, undertaking steps to understand the community needs, assess our capability to meet those needs, and to identify gaps and opportunities that will enable the community needs to be better met into the future.

April 2022 Calendar - Cemetery Maintenance, Inverleigh Cemetery

The amazing power of paint.

The April image from the Inverleigh Historical Society calendar for 2022 is the Caretakers or Gravedigger’s shed. In England where graveyards are often alongside a church, this would have been for the Sexton who maintained the records and often dug the graves.

Geelong Eastern Cemetery received their first burial in 1839. Sections of that cemetery were originally administered by the main denominational churches, each with their own Sexton and gravediggers. In 1877 a General Trust was formed and in 1907 the Roman Catholic and Jewish sections also joined.

The inaugural Inverleigh Cemetery Trustees were appointed in 1859 with a 20 acre allotment. The land was already in use as a cemetery with the oldest headstone being that of Patrick Monahan, an Irishman who was buried 1854. (It is sometimes quoted as 1851 but he didn’t arrive in Australia until 1853 with his six living children, his wife Bridget having died on the voyage, so a typographical error from a former headstone is often quoted. ) The location of the cemetery is near

where the crown grants were given to the Church of England and Roman Catholic churches. Both had built church/schools with the Anglicans commencing in 1858. Today these churches are located in High Street.

Following European settlement there are many “lone”graves a body was buried where it was found. In Inverleigh the railway line wasn’t built until 1913 and according to Gateway to the West, the Inverleigh history produced for the 1977 “Back-To”, a grave was located somewhere near the tracks.

Inverleigh still has a group of locally elected trustees who undertake the governance and maintenance of this reserve. Some recent renovations have been the replacement of dangerous old pine trees on the western boundary with smaller trees and shrubs, the upgrade of the main tracks, refurbishment and installation of seats, and the painting of this shed This photo was submitted by Kevin McDonald of his fellow painter, A. ‘Sandy’ McCallum. Sandy is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees, having become a Trustee following on from his father, and has given over 40 years of service. An engaging raconteur, he has many stories of Inverleigh life.

G’Day from the penners for April. Well as anticipated the year is quickly advancing. I can’t believe how fast it goes, it seems that each year that passes the quicker it goes. Now I know I am going downhill in regards to age but fair dinkum, slow down a bit!

Ladies, Give Golf a Go!

Inverleigh Golf Club is pleased to announce that Golf Professional Vicky Uwland will be conducting a series of clinics for Ladies. Our first clinic will be FREE, with the 5 follow up sessions at a total cost of $50.

These Clinics are for beginners, no matter what age, so don’t worry if you haven’t played before. Come along and join in the friendly atmosphere at Inverleigh Golf Club and learn how to play golf with female tuition.

Time: 9.45am Registration for a 10.00am Start

These Clinics have been very popular in previous years, so don’t hesitate to secure your spot.

POLICE REPORT FOR APRIL 2022 Hello All, Please continue to inform us of any suspicious activity in the community, recently after information received Police district response units from Ballarat conducted a raid on a property in Inverleigh where they discovered a cannabis crop being grown on an old market garden property. Two males were arrested and remanded in custody. The stench of the marijuana plants was clearly noticeable to anyone passing the property and the male’s behaviour at the property was odd drawing attention to themselves.

Some members of the community may be aware of incidents where large amount of egg shell waste was being dumped on various roads including the Inverleigh-Teesdale Road, Inverleigh-Shelford Road, Wingeel and other areas throughout the area. As well as the mess there was a terrible stench in the locations. On contacting council the areas were cleaned up and an investigation was launched. Council have asked me to pass on that the offender was detected and received two substantial fines and is no longer working in the industry.

Recently it came to our attention that ID belonging to a male with extensive criminal history from Geelong was discovered on a rural property in Shelford by the owner of the farm.

Please report any suspicious loitering or movements around your farms which may help us to prevent farm crime. Police are still investigating how and why the ID got left at the property.

Roadworks zones. I know some motorists get frustrated by roadworks as lots of people are time poor these days and running late for appointments. Roadworks zones are set up for a reason usually there are workers at the location and they are very vulnerable as anyone standing

on the side of the road when a vehicle passes at 100 km/h would know. It may also be reduced due to the road being in a dangerous state while the works are being undertaken.

Roadworks speed limits are usually 40 km/h.

Recently there has been several occasions where I have been flagged down by the workers due to the speeds motorists are travelling through the zones. I have conducted speed checks and issued infringements and found motorists doing 30 km/h plus over the limits which has resulted in their licences being suspended. Any speeds in excess of 25 km/h above is a licence suspension.

Please respect the roadworks zones. There is currently a long term one at the intersection with Common Road and later on there will be another at Hope Plains Road as well so you will need to get used to them. Please allow extra time on your journeys.

Recently we conducted operation ARID over the long weekend, again as with most long weekends and holiday periods I detected numerous offences from people travelling through our area. I issued 42 infringements over the two shifts I worked including a Mazda driver 130/100 zone East on Hamilton Hwy Barunah Plains 12/3/22 at 4.40 pm, licence suspension 3 mths.

Burning Season.

This time of year, there are a lot of farmers burning stubble paddocks in preparation for the next seasons crop.

You will notice large columns of smoke rising up and then it is cleared within an hour or so.

To people who are not familiar with this process it can be surprising and they often ask what is going on, so I will explain briefly what is happening and how it is regulated.

Firstly the paddock to be burnt is prepared with a fire break that is raked and ploughed around its edge. Usually the break width is at least 6 metres wide.

Currently we are still within the fire restriction period so all stubble burns require a burning permit that is obtained from the CFA or the local shire. The permit specifies what the requirements are to have a successful controlled burn, this covers the fire break construction, water amounts and equipment needed, personnel requirements, weather conditions, and who needs to be notified.

Typically at least two vehicles with water are needed and crewed with competent people, the wind must not exceed 15kph and the temperature must not

exceed 32c. The local fire captains are notified as well as the CFA group communications and Vicfire.

Neighbours are also notified .

So there is a lot to be done before it commences and it is burnt in a very controlled way using the wind and the fire breaks to control the spread and intensity of the fire. The fire travels across the paddock until it meets a backburn from the fire break or the break itself. Once it has been completed it must be checked for any fire getting over the breaks or any other hot spots that might cause trouble. Once fire restrictions are lifted, permits are not needed but the process is basically the same.

Overall it is a very effective way of managing fuel loadings in cropping paddocks and helping prepare for the next seasons crop.

On the weekend of the 19 and 20th of March we had the privilege of helping at the open garden days at Leigh River Roses. It was very well attended and the weather on the days was perfect for visiting the garden. We raised approximately $1700 and would like to thank Robyn and Greg Erwin for inviting the Inverleigh brigade to help and have the opportunity to raise some money.

Easter Health Hazards Easter is the time of chocolate, family gatherings, easter egg hunts and short getaways.

If traveling with you pet or leaving your pet with a carer please ensure your pet has current up to date contact details attached to their microchip records.

If your pet is on medication be sure to have sufficient medication for the holiday period. If leaving your pet with a family member or a carer give them the Veterinary Clinics contact number in the case of an emergency.

Here are a few of the common hazards that our cats and dogs may be exposed to during the Easter celebrations.

Chocolate - The more cocoa that is in chocolate the more toxic it will be. Cooking chocolate is seven times more toxic than milk chocolate. As well as a high fat contents, chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine. These two stimulants affect the central nervous system and the heart muscle.

Symptoms of Chocolate toxicity: • Increased heart rate • Tremors or shaking • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • Seizures Hot Cross Buns - Raisins, grapes and sultanas are highly toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure.

Easter Lillies - The easter lily is one of the most dangerous flowers you can have around cats. The entire plant is toxic, it will easily put your cat into acute kidney failure. This can also happen just by your cat grooming lily pollen off their fur.

Given the high risk the safest thing you can do is to keep lillies out of homes with cats.

Symptoms of Easter Lily poisoning: • Off food • No urination • Depression • Vomiting Easter Toys and Grasses - Those tiny baby chick toys, artificial grasses, bunnies and plastic eggs may be good basket stuffers, but your pet sees them as a snack.

These items can cause gastroenteritis, pancreatitis or even an obstruction in your pets digestive tract.

Symptoms may include: • Lethargy • Depression • Reluctance to eat • Vomiting • Abdominal pain Easter Egg Hunts - If you are planning and Easter Egg Hunt, make sure your pets do not have access and count to make sure all eggs are found before allowing pets back into the area.

HAVE YOUR SAY ON DRAFT CUSTOMER STRATEGY Golden Plains Shire Council is calling for feedback on its Draft Customer Experience Strategy 2022-2026.

At its meeting on 22 March, Council endorsed its Draft Customer Experience Strategy 2022-2026 (Draft Strategy) for public exhibition from Wednesday 23 March to 9am, Wednesday 13 April, 2022.

A key objective of the Council Plan 2021-2025, the Draft Strategy has been developed in consultation with customers and employees, with 84 residents completing the two community surveys in January and February 2022.

The Draft Strategy puts in focus Council’s clear direction for customer experience and the commitment it makes to customers which aligns with the Council Plan 2021-2025 and reflects the Vision and Values of the organisation. The broad aim of the Draft Strategy is to strengthen Council’s commitment to being a customer-first organisation, supported by the action plan and program of work that will help Council deliver its customer promise.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble said the community played a key role in the development of the Draft Strategy and Council welcomes feedback on the strategic plan.

“The Council Plan 2021-2025 makes the commitment to improve Council’s customer experience and build accountability to service standards and timely responsiveness. The Draft Customer Experience Strategy 2022-2026 details the action plan to deliver on this Leadership objective and Council is pleased to endorse the document for public exhibition.

“Council would like to thank the 84 residents who completed the two community surveys and provided valuable insight into their experiences as customers. We thank them for sharing their time and ideas to improve our service and to potentially benefit all residents in the future. The input shaped the development of the Draft Customer Experience Strategy 2022-2026 and we encourage further feedback to Council on the four-year strategic plan.”

The Draft Strategy is published on Council’s website and print copies are available at Council’s Customer Service Centres at 2 Pope Street, Bannockburn and 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale.
