The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to GS Nmaterial. Peter’s Editorial

How much has changed in just one month, since I last prepared the Leigh News. The whole world seems to have been turned on it's head and how we manage and cope with daily life is completely different. I am amazed at how our political leaders have had to adjust to this new world of constant change and provide direction for us all. Our Prime Minister and our State Premier, from two completely different political backgrounds are having to stand up and lead us all through uncharted waters none of us have had to deal with in our own lifetime. I personally thank our leaders for taking control as best they know how and navigate us all through this maze of life as we adjust to it now. Who knows how long this will last, but we will come out the other side with life experience that we have never experienced before. Please stay positive in a world going through turmoil. Keep looking out for each other and support each other. Social media is playing a big part for us all on this journey. Thanks to those in our community who are using this to support and encourage each other. I love hearing about the various activities around our town, especially to help our children on this journey. I'm still not sure if a printed copy of this month's newsletter is possible, so if you are able to share a copy electronically with family and friends, please do so if you can. Until next month, stay safe and keep encouraging each other. We all need it.

9TH ANNUAL DACHSHUND DERBY A GREAT SUCCESS Well what a day we had at the 9th Annual Inverleigh Dachshund Derby on 1st March 2020. The sun was shining and the crowds and pouches turned up !! We as a committee were totally overwhelmed with the number of people that came out and had fun with their dogs. There were 133 registered dogs on the day, 565 cars through the gate, people visiting from 80 different suburbs/townships, including Torquay, Drysdale, Ararat, Altona Meadows, Kensington and Timboon just to name a few ! We also had great support for the event with representatives from federal, state, and local council in attendance on the day. We had 16 Dachshunds in the Derby Final with “Lucille” from Ballarat taking out the main event. This event is only one day a year, but the Committee spends all year planning & fundraising and it goes to show all our hard work paid off.

We do hope you all enjoyed the day and look forward seeing you all next year at our 10th event! During the year we will be on the hunt to recruit some more volunteers to help out on the day. If you are interested and enjoy dogs and would like to be a part of a great community event, please do not hesitate to contact us at:

inverleighdachshunderby@gmail.com or Melissa on 0408 595 093.

This day would not go ahead without sponsors, we are very grateful to Julie from Stockdale & Leggo Bannockburn our main sponsor of our trophies for the second year running ! Golden Plains Shire for funding our newly branded marquees, Kym & Lyndsay Addison from Geelong Pet Photography for the sponsorship of the cutest puppy event and providing us with lots of action shots from the day. Also, a big thank you to the Inverleigh Cricket Club for running the canteen on the day and to our 15 stallholders that consisted of a Doggie Day Spa, plants, handmade handbags, fibre art, handmade dog treats, dog café and pet photography. There was certainly a wonderful variety and array of dog related wares.

4 Leigh News POLICE REPORT FOR APRIL 2020 I have had some reports of youths in the Inverleigh pre-school grounds out of hours. Youths have been moving and using equipment, leaving gates open and leaving rubbish around the grounds. On learning of this I also found the Primary school has had issues with youths after hours on the grounds climbing onto the top of the shade sails and using them as a trampoline which is extremely dangerous. They also had a waste pipe damaged and a security light smashed. There are also reports of youths riding bikes up and down the rear wooden deck which could also result in a fall. Previously I have also had reports of youths in the Teesdale school grounds forcing their way into the sports sheds and getting out various pieces of equipment to use. Now while the principals have allowed the access to the grounds in the past I am sure this will stop pretty quickly if this kind of behaviour continues. No person should be in the kindergarten grounds after hours. If property is damaged in the school grounds you can expect that it will be investigated and persons will be

arrested, interviewed and charged. It can be a balancing act with giving children some freedom but parents also need to be aware of what their children are up to and where they are if you need to locate them. In Geelong I would often find youths roaming about at odd hours and would contact their parents who would have no idea that their children were where I had come across them. Often they had been told by their children that they would be at a particular friends and the parents had not checked this with the other family and instead the children were over in a totally different area with different people getting up to no good. There are some issues currently over in Bannockburn with youths roaming about the streets at all hours and some are getting into some pretty serious criminal activity which has recently made publicity in the Geelong newspaper and social media. Don’t let this happen to your children, know where they are going, who they are hanging around with and what they are getting up to. Make sure they are wearing helmets on

Made to order to suit your garden conditions.

Mike Patton 0408 784631 Beautifully designed Australian native gardens, drought tolerant, low maintenance

bicycles, not carrying around textas and spray paint etc. Poor behaviour often starts with small things that then escalate. I have also getting some reports of older youths riding motorcycles about the Turtle bend area in Teesdale often without helmets. Parents who allow their children motorcycles need to take action about this before I catch them. Children can only ride motorcycles on private property and approved motorcycle clubs. To ride on roads, paths and public property, people need to be licenced and motorcycles registered. This includes the Inverleigh common etc. I have also had reports of youths doing up cars in Teesdale revving the engines loudly for long periods some without exhausts fitted. People need to consider their neighbours with the noise they make and there are penalties under the Environment Protection Act. Lastly we are experiencing uncertain times with the current health measures in relation to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Please head the health measures published by the various government bodies. We are all finding that it has changed our lives and activities dramatically and a lot of people are losing their jobs/income. We need to be very considerate of others and what they might be experiencing wether it might be poor health of themselves or a relative, isolation, loss of income etc. Let’s all try to minimise the risk of the virus getting into our communities and spreading. Keep safe Chris

History of Wall Bridge - Teesdale

In the early days of the Shire of Leigh Teesdale had a Toll Gate on the western side of the main Bannockburn/ Shelford Road just after what is now called Lethbridge Teesdale Road, but known locally as Walls Lane. The gate was manned by Mr. & Mrs. Salt. The toll gate caused all sorts of rows, because the locals refused to pay the toll and went down Walls Lane through Russell Street into Tolson Street and into the township. The Toll was needed to pay for the upkeep and repairs to the roads. Later a Roads Act came into being to pay for the maintaince, and the toll gates were closed. John Wall Senior came from County Clare, Ireland with his wife Honora (Hehir) and children. The family came Senator Sarah Henderson, Dianne Hughes & Cr Owen Sharkey on unassisted shipping, meaning they paid their own fare to Australia on the “James McHenry” in 28th August 1854. The Church built at Teesdale and also tried to get a Catholic shipping list gave the names of the eight children in the fam- School built, that was unsuccessful ily, John aged 40 years, Honora aged 35 years, 1. Patrick aged 12, 4.Thomas aged to get the Shire to name the bridge “Walls Bridge”, as she 11, 5. Michael aged 9, 6. John aged 7, 7. Bridget aged 5 and was the only person still living who knew the name the 8. Edmond aged 1. locals called the bridge. I first contacted the Shire about The family were in the Teesdale when the first rates naming the bridge in January 2007, I’m not sure when it were taken in 1865, John owned roughly 241 acres in the was eventually officially named. Parish of Burtwarrah. Stone Park Farm was allotments 39 It must have been difficult getting across Native and 40 consisting of 102 acres. John was active in local afHut Creek in those early days, there was most likely a fairs, being on the Cemetery trust and also having a Catholic causeway which would have flooded during heavy rain. John Wall petitioned Leigh Shire for a bridge over Native Hut Creek on Tolson Street in 1873, but it wasn’t built untill tenders were called 1878, the bridge was known to locals as Walls Bridge. Next to it is a large dam on allotment 10 which is known as Walls La-goon, “This is the only permanent soft water hole on the land”. Early maps show a creek running into the waterhole, which was most likely a billabong on Native Hut Creek until a wall was built to make a dam. The Shire of Leigh’s Engineer Charles Anthony Corbett Powell Wilson, was the eldest son of the former Shire Engineer Charles Anthony Corbett Wilson and Maria Powell. In 1908, plans were prepared Above: The Old Bridge. Below: The New Bridge. by C.AC.P. Wilson to replace the original structure Old Walls Bridge ‘for an iron girder bridge with stone abutments.’. Nothing came of this proposal but in 1908 J. Pryor was awarded a contract for works to Walls bridge. In 1927, the existing bridge structure was constructed at a cost of £400 as a replacement for the earlier bridge. Local Red Gum timber was used in the construction. Allison Martin (nee Squires) remembered the red gums being cut down and the local children watched in great interest and most likely exploring the work as it was undertaken. Now in 2020 Teesdale has a lovely new bridge, which can accommodate pedestrians, bike riders and traffic. New Wall Bridge

SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL We hope that everyone is well and that the work that we prepared for the students prior to the school closure is helping to alleviate some of the boredom due to the Corona virus shutdowns. We look forward to welcoming back all our students back to school when it is safe to do so. New Playground Our new playground has been installed and it looks fabulous and colourful!!!! We are just waiting to get the soft fall laid before the students can begin to use the new equipment. We thank the Golden Plains Shire, Bannockburn Bendigo Bank, the Local Schools Community Fund and the Mt Mercer Wind Farm for helping us raise the funds needed to build our new playground. Once the restrictions are lifted we will have an event to officially open the new playground for the school and the community. Our next fundraising project will be for a school bus so we can get the students out and about. Collaboration with Meredith

Primary Once school resumes we will be continuing our collaboration with Meredith Primary School. We have had the opportunity to take part in their Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings that look at teaching practice and student learning outcomes and we will be combining schools in some excursions, athletics practice, and school swimming.

Cooking Program Our cooking program has been a great success with the kids relishing their roles in food preparation, cooking, serving, and cleaning up. We welcome any parent help on these days to support the cooking program. For catering purposes please advise teaching staff if your child(ren) are unable to participate in a certain week or inform the school if there are any additional allergies or intolerances we need to be aware of. APRIL 2020 CALENDAR

The Inverleigh RSL Memorial wall was unveiled on Sunday 20th March, 2011. It displays photos of deceased past members in memory of their Military Service and their work whilst members of the Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch. Members in the same category from the Shelford RSL SubBranch are included, as the Shelford group joined the Inverleigh Sub-Branch when their numbers declined. Conflicts represented on the wall to date are WW2 and Vietnam. The Memorial Wall project, suggested by President Mal Johns, was embraced by RSL members, and particularly by Barbara Phillips. Barbara was an auxiliary member of the Sub-Branch in its early days and, after around 60 years of membership, was in the perfect position to contact relatives and ask for photos. The building of the wall was undertaken by Peter O’Connor, a Vietnam veteran and member of the SubBranch. Peter arranged for the donation of timber from Barwon Timber and gave his labour. Many of the photos on the wall are of people who made huge contributions to our communities in many spheres. Some grew up in Inverleigh or surrounding districts, some came as Soldier Settlers at the end of WW2 and others arrived more recently. Here is a tiny taste of the stories behind the photos. Dave McMillan was an RSL member for 50 years, with

45 years in the role of treasurer. He joined the R.A.A. Engineer’s (Bridging) 4th Division then posted to Z Special SRD Allied Intelligence Bureau. Dave named his gun Dorothea, after his wife Dorothy. After the war he built the local service station. He was very community minded and was a founding member of the Inverleigh Golf Club. Jack (Bones) Phillips grew up in Inverleigh and enlisted in the Airforce on his 18th birthday. Way back then his nickname was ‘Blue’, in honour of his red hair. Blue was in Queensland on his way to his fourth tour of duty in New Guinea when news came that the war was over. He joined in the celebrations with everyone, singing and dancing in the streets. Len Maher, Jack Phillip’s cousin, also joined the Airforce. His nickname was ‘Fiddler’ –

yes, he played the violin. One of Len’s duties was to take messages for loved ones from boys who were on flying missions. Many of these Airmen thought that they would not make it home. Barbara Phillips said that Len would have been wonderful in that role, because he had a most generous heart, was softly spoken and didn’t panic. Submitted by Christine Windle

Apology: I do apologies for not attributing the photo of the Straw Necked Ibis in last months edition. It was taken by Andrea Bolton. Andrea submitted several photos of birds taken in her "backyard" and the Straw Necked Ibis gave us great ideas for a local story. Liz McDonald

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK – APRIL 2020 Like many of you, I have been confronted by the news and growing reality of the Coronavirus pandemic, both overseas and in Australia. Understandably, this is a confusing and distressing time for many people, especially those with health concerns and loved ones overseas. As I write this message, new travel and border restrictions have been put in place and the supermarket shelves are running bare – and it’s hard to know what next week or month will bring. At times like these, it’s important that as a community, we come together in spirit – even if we are separated physically. Let’s be kind, caring and considerate as we help each other through this unprecedented crisis; to come from a place of compassion and care rather than anger and fear. Golden Plains is a special place to live – and we have 56 wonderful townships with communityminded residents who we know will rise to meet the moment. The health and well-being of our community, staff and volunteers is Golden Plains Shire Council’s top priority. In this fastchanging environment, it has been necessary for Council to make changes to some of its services, operations and events – and there may be more changes in the future. We thank our customers, clients and community for their understanding and patience, as Council continues to do its very best to support and care for the people of Golden Plains Shire. Stay safe and connected, be kind and take care. Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey

CFA MESSAGE FOR THIS MONTH A Challenge for Our Firefighters

On Sunday 15th March members from the Inverleigh Fire Brigade attended training with a difference. The invite had gone out from the Wingeel Fire Brigade to come to their Ken “Nugget” Earl Memorial Challenge. The event was named after Ken Earl who was a well-loved and very active member in the Wingeel brigade. All up, six Inverleigh members turned up: Jodie Holman, Darcy Holman, Colin Holman, Andrew Collins, Clinton Coles and Ewen Peel. They were competing against Wingeel and Winchelsea Fire Brigade members. The goal was to form teams of two or three and take a fire truck from the starting line, along a course set up with targets lying in the grass, knocking the targets over, then turning around and flipping the targets back again, to arrive at the finish line in the fastest possible time. If any targets were missed, five

seconds for each target was added to their time. This exercise was designed to simulate a real grass fire situation, where the aim is to accurately put out flames along the fire line as quickly as possible. Before long, a Winchelsea team was in the lead, but they didn’t stay there long as a team of two from

Wingeel raced ahead. Finally, the winning team comprised Inverleigh’s Jodie Holman and Andrew Collins, and Wingeel’s Stewart Hamilton. However, they only just made it ahead of a Winchelsea team by three hundredth of a second, so it was a very close call. The winners were each awarded a trophy for their efforts.

June, in August!

Determined to give them the best visit we could, we made the house ready and our hearts hopeful; and the anticipation accelerated.

June and Lee arrived on a cloudy New England day in late July, and my husband and I felt a little foolish holding our welcome sign, kindly printed on the computer by a dear friend’s daughter. The airport in Boston is a frustrating place to meet people, for unlike some busy airports, greeters cannot get to the gate to meet a plane. As I watch the arriving passengers into the area, I saw no sign of them. We had exchanged pictures of ourselves, and I prayed that I would recognise her. Finally, the last two people came out-she was shorter than I had imagined and more petite than the picture can show; I don’t remember seeing a recent picture of Leigh but he stood filming our meeting through glass doors. We soon learned that they were last because they had search the plane for his wallet. Somewhere between the stop-over in Los Angeles and Boston, the wallet left his pocket. This was their first trip out of the country, and the first five minutes after arriving they had to call Australia to cancel the credit card and replace traveller’s checks. That done, we came home to introduce Leigh and June to the family, including my parents and two sons. Although they had been sleep deprived by flying straight from Melbourne, their friendly manner when everyone over-not an easy thing to do when teens are concerned.

The days flew by. First a trip up the Main Coast, followed by a drive through the beautiful Kancamagus Trail in New Hampshire as we compare the cost of housing in our two countries and malls. Apparently, they are all the same and so are people. Yet my son was astonished that Leigh said “goo’day, mite”. “People really say that?” said our seventeen-year-old.

The next day brought a big surprise a call from the manager of cleaning services at the Baltimore airport to say that the wallet has been found and the only thing missing from it was the American money. He had already called Australia to find out how to contact Leigh.

With our faith in human nature and restored, our days were filled with searches for gifts to bring home, postcards to write, and sights to be seen. But in between were glimpses of how much we were a part of their family. We learned they had actually memorized much of the “Bert and I” record, which they demonstrated with Down-East accents, and I realised our carefully chosen gifts had a greater impact than I had ever dreamed. Suddenly I discovered that I had a whole family half a world away-an only child’s fantasy come true! Leigh’s cheerful manner gave us a family expression too. When faced with a choice, we now say, “I’m easy,” as he did, and relax a bit more knowing the particular choice doesn’t really matter.

June is always ready with a wonderful smile and quick to join in. Through our letters we shared our daily lives but not the deeper feelings that come with common experience. I couldn’t tell how important I really was to her until we met; I hadn’t realised that our letter writing created a history together that only our families share. My life to her was a series of postal addresses, and it was wonderful to see the connections made as we visited some of them. “Oh Sebago Lake!” she explained with the ring of familiarity, remembering the many summers her letters found me there.

Perhaps most surprising of all, was the match that was made among all four of us. We have often commented how few times we’ve found a couple were all four of us are fully compatible with each other. Here were people who within a few short days had become so in tune with each other that the photo-shop clerk assumed we were family - as we discovered, indeed we were.

To be concluded next Month.......

The above true story was given to me for publication in the Leigh News, if I felt it worthy? I read the first paragraph and knew instantly it should be shared, but it was a bit too long. I have chosen to publish it as a serial, perhaps not as long as "Blue Hills", but I do trust you all enjoy if over the next months to come, PeterT.

Acts of Kindness

In Personal Learning lessons, junior school students have been learning about the impact they can have on their peers with the things they say and do. Students explored the book ‘Have You Filled a Bucket Today?’ and discussed the concept of everyone having an invisible bucket. Buckets can be filled by saying and doing something kind/caring. Students made a physical bucket as a reminder to aim to have a positive impact on their peers. It’d be great for families to continue delivering this message at home by discussing the concept with their children.

Imagination Play Area

The Imagination Station is proving very popular with our students. A range of materials have been donated such as milk crates, PVC pipe, wood blocks, old pots and a mud kitchen, kindly built by one of our parents. Students have been creating all kinds of games such as cooking and billy cart making.

Leadership Camp – Beloka Kelpies

Our School Leaders were fortunate to participate in our inaugural leadership camp to Beloka Kelpies, a working farm and Kelpie stud in Gippsland. Students chose a working dog they were responsible for looking after over the duration of camp and learnt how to work the dogs on sheep and through an agility course. They used the various exercises from the camp to reflect on leadership and the qualities they have as young leaders. School Council supported this camp last year with a view to providing greater prestige for our selected School Leaders and with the view to it becoming an annual tradition at Teesdale. The students certainly took a lot out of their three days at Beloka and we look forward to offering this experience again in coming years.

One of our year 6 students at the Beloka Kelpies Camp. Can always rely on a photo of ‘man’s best friend’ to put a smile on your face!

Introducing Pastor Surendra Wesley from Presbyterian Church in the Leigh

I was born in central India in one of the Indian villages in 1969. We had no electricity, no paved roads and no inbuilt toilets in houses. I grew up with kerosene lamps (lanterns) as a source of light after the sunset for studies, cooking and visiting others. It was a primitive lifestyle in those days. There was no church in that village, but God in his provision sent a Methodist missionary from Canada to that village to share the good news of the gospel with my grandfather. By God’s grace, my grandfather was converted and became a follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. The missionary named him Wesley and later my father was named John and so he became John Wesley. This is how I inherited the name Wesley. Grandfather being the authority in the household, his decision was upheld by his entire household. My mother, Kamla was from one of the Christian orphanages, who my grandfather found for his son John to be his wife (as you know, especially in those days parents selected a wife for you, and you simply accepted it). I have two brothers and three sisters. Due to some hardship in our family my father moved to a different town where this wonderful Christian orphanage operated by three American ladies who came to India in 1928 to serve God. When my mother passed away this orphanage willingly accepted three youngest in our family, due to my father being working away from home and no one being there to look after us. This orphanage was one of the best things to happened to me and my two siblings. We were well fed, well dressed and well educated. We were provided with far more than ordinary parents in India would be able provide. But the best of all was the good Christian upbringing. Church, Sunday school, bible quizzes and competitions, youth groups and much more. At one occasion we watched the slide show of Pilgrim Progress, written by John Bunyan. God in his mercy convicted my heart of my sin and His Holy Spirit began to work in my life. Slowly God began to change me from inside out. God in his mercy brought His people in my life who guided me to Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Dehradun, India in 1991. I, not only learnt God’s word in detail there but I also learnt to speak English. After three years of theological studies there I joined Covenant Players (Christian Drama Ministry) in Australia in 1995. God gave me a wonderful privilege to mingle, interact with different people, culture and different venues for ministry. I served God through

Covenant Players five years in Australia and surrounding countries and five years in the States. I also worked in differnt other fields; as baker, landscaper, Glazier, Technical departments (mostly Electronics). In 2007 by the grace of God I met May in Sydney and we got married soon after. May and I went to India and joined the same Bible college in Dehradun. We were enrolled to do ‘Master of Divinity program’ for three years but due to decline in May’s health, she had to returned to New Zealand, but I continued with my studies. By God’s grace I graduated in 2013 and met with Dr. Peter Barnes who spoke on my graduation and then guided May and I to Mount Magnet. God blessed us beyond our imagination in Mount Magnet, especially in the area of ministry. May and I had the blessed privilege to see God at work. We, by God’s grace also saw that just reading the word of God (no explanation or exposition required) has tremendous power to change people’s lives. God’s word is living word. We spent five years in Mount Magnet, but due to our children’s education and better opportunities for them, God in his mercy brought us to Inverleigh. We believe that God has opened this door for us and he will do mighty works in this area in his time and according to his will. Who would have thought that a person like me, born in an Indian villiage, wouldn’t even have dreamt about living in an Indian city let alone a different country. But this is the kind of God you and I serve, who not only makes impossible possible but He turns every impossibility into reality. Psalm 34:8 - Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him. Surendra Wesley

Leigh News 25 St Joseph’s Catholic Parish of Meredith - update from Father Charles The Catholic Bishops of Victoria issued an instruction on 18th March that there are to be no public celebrations of Mass or other liturgies from now until they rescind the instruction (expected to be a few months). This arises of course due to the Covid-19 virus and the need to control its spread.

Ladies night bigger and better than ever

The recent Ladies Night at Inverleigh Bowls Club was another resounding success, with over 60 attending for a friday night of fun and frivolity. Bowls Club Secretary, Suzy Colman, organised a great night of Bowls, Raffles, Food and Drinks, with support from many local businesses and individuals. The first bowls event of the night, the "ditch to ditch roll up" saw bowls of all colours going in all directions with excited women of all ages chasing their bowls down the green, just for the satisfaction of winning first prize. As the bowls continued, many ladies showing great potential after just one or two ends. If success could be measured in decibels, there is no doubt all had a great night. Some slightly over-refreshed needed alternative transport home but everyone clearly had a good time.
