The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial Hello everyone and welcome to Autumn. Remember to turn your clock

back for day light saving on Sunday 4th April. Well done to Division 3 team from Inverleigh Bowls Club for bring home Grand Final medals in the recent completed season. I have been in touch with friends and family of the bus driver injured in the accident in Inverleigh last month. Reports are that he is progressing, preparing for more surgery and in good spirits. We wish him a continued speedy recovery and pray for his on going health and mobility to be restored fully. He is greatful for the love, care and support and prayers of so many. I have also heard from our local councillor, Cr Clayton Whitfield, that Golden Plains Shire Council are following up with Rural Roads Victoria for the conditions of the intersection, including signage, to be assessed as soon as possible and updated. I'll be following up with Cr Whitfield to make sure that this is done without delay to avoid a repeat of this situation. In the meantime, all keep safe and well and enjoy the Easter break, remembering the real meaning of Easter.

ISOBEL MOIR WISHART

-read at her Thanksgiving Service on Friday 5th March 2021 at Inverleigh Presbyterian church at 1pm with approx. 90 people in attendance. Mum began life on the 30th October 1929. Mum grew up in Geelong West, McDougall St with her two brothers: James and John. Money was tight, there was no car, so everywhere you went you walked or rode a push bike. Mum’s father David Duncan Riley rode a pushbike to his work at the Geelong Cement Works as a Fitter and turner during his working life. Church services were held twice on Sundays at Scots Presbyterian Church, Geelong West, so the Riley family walked or rode to both services each week. Mum went to Manifold Heights State School to grade 6 then went to Geelong High School to fourth form. She left school to work in the office of ‘Blair and Cook hardware’ in Moorabool St Geelong. Mum in her early 20s, along with a friend Audrey Bearden sailed on a ship called ‘the Himalaya’ across to Scotland to meet up with Aunty May and Uncle Jim in Arbroath as well as to work and travel around. While they were there King George VI died. The new Queen Elizabeth II had her coronation in 1953 so mum and Audrey went along and viewed the event. Mum also went to Europe where she hitchhiked around for 6 weeks, quite an adventure. Reading a letter from mum to dad in 1952, she described her first experience of hitch-hiking from London to Dover. She wrote: “It was my first experience of course and my mother just about did ten backflips when I wrote home and told them, however we struck it lucky nearly all the way and stayed a night in the Youth Hostel there.” In another letter to dad, one of many, she stated:” when I come home I’m not going to write again for years and years!” In fact, mum was a great correspondent over the years, with regular letters to her aunt in Scotland and when Glenda and Hugh were in Zimbabwe, a letter every week was sent. Mum met dad through the P.F.A. Presbyterian Fellowship of Australia. A relationship blossomed and they married on the 15th January 1955. Mum was a city girl but soon had to adapt to life on the farm at Leigh Estate where there was no power, she had to get used to a generator. At the time some thought she was a pioneer living in Inverleigh 23 miles from Geelong. Uncle Geordie Costain said they were a little worried how mum would adjust to the quiet life on the farm but did acknowledge mum did a great job. With four children life became very busy. Mum’s weeks went something like this: Mondays washing day, Tuesdays ironing, Wednesdays cooking, Thursdays shopping, Fridays cleaning, Saturdays sport, Sundays church. In amongst all this mum had to make cut lunches for five people for years. I did the maths, I worked out mum

made 12,000 lunches! Glenda said before healthy school lunches became in vogue my lunch always had a slice of sponge for morning tea and always some kind of cake/slice for snacks! Mum was very community minded, she was involved in the school Mother’s Club, P.W.M.U., Guild, Bowls Club. She always took on administrative roles; President, Secretary or Treasurer. Mum was a dearly loved sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother of 11 and great grandmother of 8, Aunty and friend. She was loving, generous, thoughtful and gracious. In the last year or two, even though her memory failed her, she remembered those who were close to her. Mum loved dad and was devoted to her husband for 57 years. Theirs was a relationship of steadfast love through sickness and health and for better and worse. Mum was always thankful for dad even when things were tough but always coped with grace and acceptance. 2020 was a difficult year for everyone but more so in the aged care sector due to the Coronavirus with strict visiting restrictions, mum barely saw family over that time. Face time was handy but that was not quite the same. The family would sincerely like to thank the staff at Hesse Health for their care during her stay. Finally, in mum’s declining years even though she lost her memory and became confused as dementia took hold she retained her love and compassion for others and her thankful nature. The shining character that was formed through her steadfast faith in Jesus Christ remained with her to the end. David Wishart.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Thursday 18 March, 2021

COVID-19 VACCINATION CLINIC AT SHIRE HALL This morning, Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Helena Kirby handed the keys for the Bannockburn Shire Hall to new leasee, Bannockburn Surgery, represented by Director John Henderson and Manager Renee Trotter. The building will be home to a dedicated COVID-19 vaccination service, established and operated by Bannockburn Surgery, which has been appointed by the Australian Government as a registered COVID-19 Vaccination Facility. Mayor Cr Helena Kirby says Bannockburn Surgery’s new clinic is a welcome tenant at the Bannockburn Shire Hall. “Council is very pleased to support this valuable initiative by a local health care provider. COVID-19 vaccinations are a critical health service and having this dedicated clinic in Golden Plains Shire will make it easier and more convenient for local residents to get vaccinated. “The past year has been a challenge for many Shire residents and the COVID-19 vaccination roll out brings great hope. We thank Bannockburn Surgery for their commitment to establishing a local vaccination clinic and we’re excited that the Bannockburn Shire Hall will play a key role in this pandemic milestone. “Following the relocation of Council Meetings to the Golden Plains Civic Centre, Council offered the Bannockburn Shire Hall for lease through an Expression of Interest process, to ensure the key CBD location was activated. Bannockburn Surgery’s new vaccination clinic will invigorate the quiet Shire Hall and bring more people to the shopping centre of Bannockburn, supporting local cafes and retail outlets.” Manager Renee Trotter says Bannockburn Surgery is privileged to be working with the Shire and to have the support of our local community. “By working with the Golden Plains Shire and utilising the Shire Hall building, we have been able to involve an iconic community building, community leaders and medical and healthcare professionals to undertake this mass vaccination program. “The preparation for this service has been a massive undertaking for our Surgery. With the development of all new policies and procedures, as well as the recruitment of medical, nursing and administrative staff to facilitate the running of these vaccine clinics, without disruption to our current surgery demands,” Ms Trotter said. Anticipating the first vaccine doses by Easter, the Bannockburn Surgery will open the clinic when doses are available and increase appointments as the Australian production of vaccine delivers strong supplies. The availability of vaccination to different groups based on age and health will be in line with the Australian Government’s guidelines. Vaccination appointments at Bannockburn Shire Hall cannot be booked over the phone, due to consent requirements. To make a vaccination appointment with Bannockburn Surgery, please visit the online portal at bannockburnsurgery.com.au and complete the booking form. People who need assistance booking an appointment or have any questions relating to the COVID-19 vaccination, are asked to contact Bannockburn Surgery at 5281 1481 to book a consultation with a GP. It is anticipated the vaccination clinic will be open at Bannockburn Shire Hall until late 2021.

APRIL 2021 CALENDAR

WW1 Souvenir & Anzac badges The handkerchief sent from wartorn Belgium to family in Inverleigh. Popular because of their small size, many of these were sent from the front to family in Australia, especially to mothers. This has been a treasured family memento for over one hundred years. Made by local women highlighting the famous Belgian lace, they enabled the earning of much needed cash. By the 1920’s, ANZAC day ceremonies were being held throughout Australia and all states had designated ANZAC Day as a public holiday (Victoria in October 1925). Veterans of all wars have been incorporated into the march. Money raised by the RSL through the ANZAC Appeal supports the

veteran community. Badges change each year but depict the Rising Sun badge worn on the Slouch Hat. Previously the Rising Sun motif had been used on coins, jam tins and by ‘Advance Australia’ organizations. In 1902 a badge was urgently sought for the Australian contingents raised after Federation for service in South Africa during the Boer War. The most widely accepted version of the origins of this badge is the one that attributes the selection of its design to a British officer, Major General Sir Edward Hutton, the then newly appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Forces. Designs have been varied slightly over the intervening years and the AIF now use the seventh version. LEST WE FORGET

THE QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY

Our world today is highly sophisticated and is achieving the height of advancement in knowledge, education, medical, and technology. Today we travel in air by planes and jet planes, on land by cars and on water by boats and ships. Our homes are so comfortable and electronically advanced that we can keep an eye on our homes by sitting miles away in our offices. We, human beings, who used to live a very short life, now, we live almost 100 years. The question that still bothers us today is, that, can we live forever. In spite of all the advance technology in medical arena, are we even anywhere near or close to achieving the immortality. Perhaps, a better and more appropriate question can be, can we ever achieve immortality in this life. This question is not only puzzling to us today, but it has puzzled mankind throughout centuries. Man in all his brilliance has not been able to conquer death. The highest of our knowledge and intelligence in the area of science, mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology has been defeated by this inevitable monster called death. However, where our supreme knowledge, wisdom and intelligence have failed, one man has been able to conquer death. This news should not come to you as a surprise because it is about 2000 years old. If you haven’t heard about this man then, I think you are really missing out a great deal. I am quite sure you have heard about this man many times, but you chose to ignore it or you were not interested in Him. Let me ask you a question, this world is looking for a solution to conquer death. A person, who discovers a solution would be the most famous and most rich person in this world. Yet, the solution lies right under your nose and you chose to ignore it because it is not scientific enough. The very science that you put your hope and faith upon has not given you any solution, nor it can ever give you any solution in regards to death. Why! You might ask? Because the science only deals with natural things. For Example,

By Rev Surendra Wesley, Presbyterian Church Pastor

Science can tell you why a stone thrown up falls to the ground. Death and its solution, both are supernatural phenomenon where science does not dare to venture. My question to you is, if science cannot provide you with answers and solutions, would you be courageous enough to look into the area where someone claims to have conquered death! I am talking about the Bible and Jesus Christ, who is the only human who has claimed to have conquered death in the pages of the Bible. Have you ever even read the Bible and examined Jesus’ claim from the bible? Or, have you just brushed it away? I think, it is unprofessional and unacademic to conclude some one’s writings wrong or useless without even reading one’s writings completely and evaluating its claims properly. The bible is most sold and read book in the entire world. Do you think you are smarter than these billions of people who have read the bible and believe in its claims? This book is not only just a book, but it is historically and archeologically authentic. Try reading it sometime, in it you will find an entire whole new world filled with people who in Jesus Christ have conquered death forever. We celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead on the day of Easter. Some people fight over words, calendar dates, signs, Moons and stars, I prefer the ultimate solution to the problem, the immortality. The answer lies in the Bible the only book in the world, try reading it sometime, and discover immortality for yourself. HAPPY EASTER my friend. Rev. Surendra Wesley.

POLICE REPORT FOR APRIL 2021

Hello all, I am writing this on a Saturday morning just after catching 2 probationary drivers at 11.30 pm the night before speeding on a rural road with is boarded by dense trees. The first driver was an 18 yr old female who was doing 145 km/h and the second was a 18 yr old male driver who was following doing 152 km/h. Both were friends and were following each other to the first drivers address in a neighbouring town. The particular road is known for kangaroos and stock often being on the road and I have been to several accidents on sections in the past including a vehicle roll over. I have been stationed here at Inverleigh for over 6 years now and just when I am thinking that a lot of poor driver behaviours have changed and I am not getting the high speeds anymore I then last night get two drivers travelling in the middle of the night on a rural road at those kind of speeds. One of the drivers came from a nearby town and should be aware that you never know where or when Police will be on the road you are travelling. The driver doing the 145 had her licence suspended for 6 months and received a $702 fine and the 152 km/h driver received a 12 month licence suspension and received a $826 fine. Today 27/3 at 5.20 pm on Shelford Mt Mercer road I got two motorists North bound one from Geelong doing 140 km/h and then fifteen minutes later another from Ballarat

doing 144 km/h. It is amazing with all the publicity that we are still getting drivers excessively speeding and risking losing their licence. The first motorist received a $620 fine and the other a $702 fine. Both had their licences suspended for 6 months. While mentioning probationary drivers I have been pulling over quite a few who have not been displaying their P plates as required. This results in a $165 fine and a loss of 3 demerit points and often I have found them speeding which also carries 3 demerit points and then as a result of accumulating 5 points in a 12 month period then their licence is suspended for 3 months by Vic Roads. Drivers please ensure you display your P plates. While driving around the area I am noticing a lot of drivers doing speeds of 108, 109,110 km/h etc on the roads. The speed limit on the highway is 100 km/h and Victoria Police is focusing on low level speeding, please be warned. Speed cameras will also take your photo at these speeds. Winchelsea Road (Dundas Street) and Common Road are also roads that will be subject to increasing Police scrutiny and enforcement especially after the recent truck/bus collision on Dundas Street. Please take care when driving around your local area. Keep safe Chris

Our School Leaders had the opportunity to develop their leadership skills whilst attending the Beloka Kelpie Camp last month. Beloka is a working farm and Kelpie stud in Gippsland. Students chose a working dog that they were responsible for looking after over the duration of camp and learned how to work the dogs with sheep and through an agility course. They used the various exercises from the camp to reflect on leadership and the qualities they have as young leaders.

News from Inverleigh Bowls Club It was an end to a season like no other!

We are one of the smallest clubs in the Geelong Bowls Region but give us a challenge and we, as a club will rise to the occasion. Saturday March 27, we brought home the 2020/21 Premiership Flag for Division 3, the final result being a 1 shot win 83 - 82. With one end to go, RSL were leading by 2 shots, but brilliant bowling by everyone in the rink we picked up 3 shots to clinch the premiership. I hope the members realize that it was not only the people on the green today that achieved this award, it was every member who supported us throughout the year and on the day. There is no ‘I’ in team and what a team we are! Our midweek (Tuesday) Division 4 Pennant team put up an outstanding fight this season but were put out of the running by teams that just performed better on the day. A fantastic effort by all who played and good luck for next season. Let’s hope it’s a full one. The Saturday Division 9 Pennant team can hold their heads high. We were fortunate to have included in our side some of our most respected and experienced players to pass on words of wisdom and guidance. Next season should show the fruits of our harvest?

We were all totally rocked to the core by the passing of George Vickers from our club last year and although he no longer shares a joke with us, his wife Janet and his family will always be welcome and know he has a special place in our club and hearts. Bannockburn and District Grants The photos of trees on the front page were taken at the Sporting Complex. The trees were purchased with money from a $3000 Grant provided by the Bannockburn and District Grants. We are very grateful for the Grant as would many other local groups who have benefitted from these Grants. We have also made a few improvements around the club including a new path and planter boxes in the car park, so thankyou to everyone who helped make these a reality. We are also looking forward to Presentation Night in early April to finish off the season. If you wish to stay up to date with what is happening at the club keep an eye on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/inverleighbowlsclub/ or our website www.inverleighbowls.org Ken Hopkins Solution to March Crossword.

22 Leigh News SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL It has been another busy month here at Shelford Primary School. We are continuing to provide a program that engages all students in their learning and ensuring that their goals are achieved. The school’s weekly cooking program continues to be very popular for the students. This is a great opportunity for them to cook simple recipes, and it allows them to participate in aspects of mathematics (measurement), science (mixing solids/liquids, prediction) and English (reading recipes). We have extended the knowledge the students have about what is actually in basic items that they regularly eat by making our own pasta (using flour, water and eggs) and churning our own ice cream. It is wonderful that the students have a greater understanding of how foods are produced, not just that they come from the supermarket.

The students are also encouraged to have pride in their school. After recent strong winds it was noted that lots of bark and leaves had gathered around the paths at the front of the school. The students worked with the teachers to tidy up this area and make it a more pleasant place for the students and visitors to walk through. We are lucky to have received a Sports Australia, Sporting Schools grant for this term. Through this grant we have been able to participate in golf lessons which have been facilitated by Ty, a professional golfer from the Geelong Junior Golf Academy. All students were able to access this program and showed great persistence in hitting the ball accurately (some even hit it so far that Mr. F had to climb through the fence and collect the ball from the paddock at the back of the oval!). Next term we are hoping to have a hit on an actual golf course so the students can practice their driving, pitching and putting skills. The Writer’s Notebook program has also been introduced at our school. All students have been able to design the front cover of their own Writer’s Notebook with imag-

es that represent them as an individual. They have been able to engage in a variety of activities to help them generate ideas for future writing work, such as brainstorming facts about something they are knowledgeable about, reflecting on an event which made them feel a particular emotion, as well as other tasks. Students have been able to use their Writer’s Notebook entries to gain inspiration and ideas for their other writing work. Most recently, they have used their notebook to aid in the development of ideas for narrative writing. All students have been enjoying participating in the Writer’s Notebook program, and it has already shown to be beneficial in helping students collect, generate, and develop ideas and information for their writing work.

DISCOVER YOUR LOCAL BUSH

Not seen so much these days, the koala was frequently spotted twenty years ago in the Inverleigh bush, now known as Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve. Why have koalas apparently left? Why are some plants in the reserve in cages? Is there anything special about this area of bushland? If you would like to know the answers to these questions, or if you have an interest in your local environment in general, you are invited to attend a presentation by Teesdale resident, Neil Anderton, all about the Reserve. You will be amazed! Neil is a retired CSIRO scientist, an expert photographer and a renowned expert on native orchids. His talk, with beautiful slides, will explain many aspects of the Reserve that many of us are unaware of.

Whether you decide to leave your pet at home and have a friend or family member care for them, leave your pet at a boarding facility or even take them along with you. Leigh News 31 Keeping Pets Safe At Easter

Easter for pets is exciting, just like it is for us. There are new colours in the house, baskets filled with goodies and these little oval shaped balls lying around.

Rabbit Facts

Rabbits make great family pets. Just like cats and dogs, rabbits also need regular veterinary treatment. Rabbit should be vaccinated against Calicivirus every 6 months. Rabbits teeth are open-rooted which means that they are constantly growing. A diet high in fibre is essential to help prevent dental disease. Rabbits are herbivores and hindgut fermenters. A good diet for these hebivores consists of 80% hay and 20% fresh green vegies. Juveniles may also be offered growth pellets. Rabbits are easy to toilet train as they generally are very clean and will toilet in the one area only. Rabbits can jump as high as 90 centimetres in one leap!

Find out some ways to keep your pet safe this Easter below:

*Stay away from plastic grass for Easter baskets. Plastic grass can become caught up at the back of the tongue or in th stomach making it impossible to pass through the digestive system. *Raisins, grapes and currants are common ingredients in hot cross buns, and can cause acute kidney failure in some dogs. *Easter Lilies are highly toxic to pets. All parts of the Lily are poisonous - the petals, leaves, stems and even the pollen. *Chocoloate is bad for both cats and dogs. Dark chocolate is more toxic than milk chocolate. *Those tiny baby chick toys, plastic eggs and bunnies are a choking hazard.

If you are worried your cat or dog has ingested part of an Easter Lily, decorative grass, plastic toys or chocolate contact our Veterinarian on call.

G'Day from the Golden Penners. As I sit here writing this article, watching the long awaited footy on the telly, the rain starts to fall again and my thoughts turn to cooler nights and cool crisp autumn days. I sigh a sigh of relief, knowing that the hot days of summer are finally behind us. Not that I've had much to complain about this year as it has been a cooler than average summer. Our group is back to full strength and we are busy writing our stories and poetry. Our latest book, Pearls on the Plains has been selling well and if you are lucky to have a copy we sincerely hope that you have enjoyed the stories and poetry that we have all worked so hard on. If you believe there is something that warrants a comment, that can be done via email, goldenpens4@gmail.com or have a look at our face book page, Golden Pens – Write Side Up where you will find more poetry. This months writing comes from Brenda, one of the original members of our group with a poem that seems to be relevant to today's society. It is in our second anthology, 'Gathering Gum Leaves 2015 / 2016' We hope you enjoy it.

Gender Equality If I was blind and couldn't see I'd accept you as you are, I'd hear your voice and feel your touch, I wouldn't see your scar. I'd hear the dancing of your voice, I'd sense your tapping feet, I'd see your soul's vibration, and that is how we'd meet. I wouldn't care if you were short, or black or white or poor, Your gender would mean nothing – your heart would mean much more. But I'm not blind and I can see, and in seeing, judgements make. You are female or you are male, you are genuine or fake. Who gets to choose the skin we're in? We're born just as we are. Male or female, we all are humans as varied as the stars. It is our character that in the end will show who's the best. It has nothing to do with gender, to achieve this is our test.
