INVERLEIGH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION meet in the

Inverleigh Public Hall

on the 3rd Wednesday of each month @7 :30pm (Except January)

VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME President: Hilary Hamilton Secretary: Luanne Thornton Treasurer: Tony Waayers Leigh News Editor: Peter Trevaskis

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec(Except December & January) tions. VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable President: Katrina Robson meetings, which you are welcome to attend. Now, here is a true story for you all! (usually when I start off like that there is lots of giggling, Oh yes- sure! or words to that effect) (nobody really believes anything I say!) A local identity, living on her own, was up in the middle of the night (perhaps nature was calling, anyway that's not important) and thought she saw someting moving near the bathroom. As she went closer, she recognised it as a snake, probably looking for water as it had been dry. So she opened the shower door and let her visitor go into the recepticle and then closed the screen door and the bathroom door, and went back to bed and to sleep. In the morning, her son came to the house to stoke up the fire and she told him about her visitor during the night......... Oh don't be silly Mum, it was probably a drop tail lizard or something. Further investigations continued, and it was a snake, still alive and breathing. So, the question for you all. What would you have done? Locked it in the shower and gone back to bed for the night? She is certainly made of sterner stuff than me. (This is a true story, from the outskirts of Inverleigh). And, so ends another year, the Covid year. What a journey it has been. But I must be truthful, I would rather be here, in Inverleigh and district, even Barunah Plains, in Victoria, in Australia rather than in any other part of the world. Well done to all for doing the right thing and doing your part to get on top of things so far. A new year awaits, and who knows what will be in store for us all. In the meantime, have a very happy and blessed Christmas and New Year break, as I will, and then back into 2021 and all it holds for us.

Leigh News 5 Off to a busy and bright start. Councillor Clayton Whitfield from Inverleigh The elections are over and the 2020 GPS council has been sworn in. I am proud to have been elected as a councillor for Golden Plains Shire. This was largely possible because of our community’s support for a local representative, and for that, I thank the people of Inverleigh. I will represent the entire shire to the best of my abilities. The new council is undergoing training sessions across a wide variety of areas including Governance, Statutory Planning, Finance and Budget and much more. This is a new initiative by the CEO which has been greatly appreciated by both the new and returning councillors. The council staff have made us all feel very welcome and I look forward to building great working relationships with them all. We have a diverse mix of councillors from across the shire and I believe going forward, we can have a successful four years. The Mayor, Helena Kirby, and Deputy Mayor, Ian Getsom were elected unopposed on the 17th of November. Community consultation and engagement was something I campaigned on and I have been very pleased to view some impending council strategies that are going to improve this area. At this point I would encourage all to visit the council website www.goldenplains.vic.gov.au for community updates and any shire related information. Thanks again to the Inverleigh community. I hope to meet even more of you during my time as councillor.

I am contactable at: CR.CWhitfield@gplains.vic.gov.au or on Mob: 0400 438 334 for any issues you would like to discuss. Clayton Whitfield, Golden Plains Shire Councillor.

AN UPDATE FROM INVERLEIGH PROGRESS ASSOCIATION This year has been quite different for everyone including the Inverleigh Progress Association. It started with numerous meetings about the Streetscape Plan and continued through the submissions, hearing and report on the Inverleigh Structure Plan. Many people worked hard to make submissions and keep everyone informed utilising the Leigh News and various Facebook pages. Our Association continued to publish the News monthly, meet regularly via Zoom and complete projects, namely the lettering on the Town Entrance, new pump shed and support for the Inverleigh Play Space, which has provided a great place for families with young children to play or sit and watch. Hopefully in 2021 everyone will be able to use the barbeque facilities as well. Today Inverleigh was packed with visitors enjoying our lovely town and its facilities. They were enjoying what many here take for granted, but these places and facilities have been completed by dedicated and enthusiastic locals, giving their time and expertise. In 2021 we are looking forward to getting back to work and would love to see some new members. Our

local Association has been working for this community for over 40 years and continues to be involved in local projects. Next year there will be opportunities to develop a community plan for the town. What are some of the things you would like to see? Your ideas will be welcome and your enthusiasm to work on them as well will be doubly welcome. Are you prepared to volunteer some time to support your community by being involved? It is very rewarding to see projects worked through and completed, sometimes over a short period, others taking years to finish. Thank you to all those who have been involved in 2020. Our meetings are held monthly from February to November on the third Wednesday at 7.30 PM. Put your toe in the water. Join us sometime. We wish you all the compliments of the season and hope you can gather with family and friends over Christmas and the holidays. Luanne Thornton, Acting Secretary

Inverleigh Sporting Complex

Edited notes taken from copies of the Leigh News giving an understanding into the early stages of turning a swamp into the Inverleigh Sporting Complex with various sporting now being played at these excellent facilities. Feb 1978: A public meeting held on 3rd August 1977 resulted in a decision being made to go ahead with establishing a Sporting Complex on the new site at the western edge of town. Bannockburn Council is requesting control of the area from the Dept. of Crown Lands. April 1978: Bannockburn Council has applied to the Dept. of Crown Lands for Committee of Management status over the proposed sporting complex. Some differences with VicRail concerning the boundary are currently holding up permission to proceed. The Council is to be approached for permission to plant trees on the western boundary of the proposed complex in conjunction with the school children. June 1978 Suggestions were invited as to suitable varieties of trees to withstand strong winds and low growing bushy varieties to fill the spaces between. Council will provide the trees and cultivate the ground before planting in the spring. Permission is now required from the Education Dept. to include the School Arboretum and also the cypress plantation from the War Memorial

Photo: B.Price to the railway line. The Dept. of Lands and Survey has stated that these two items are the only obstacles still to be clarified before the Council may proceed with Stage One. July 1978: Dept. of Youth, Sport and Recreation of Victoria has advised the Council that a grant towards the cost of the developing Inverleigh Sporting Complex has been received. Council will proceed with establishment of a local management committee. October 1978: At a public meeting in the Inverleigh Hall nine members of the community were elected as members of the committee with representatives from the cricket club, football club, school and council. April 1979: Stage One: Consists of two ovals, water storage, a toilet block and boundary fences. Provision is made for the future development of bowling greens, tennis and netball courts. Stage Two: The major cost involved in this stage would be the provision of a Pavilion. The Committee agreed it would be appropriate to apply to the Dept. of Youth, Sport and Recreation for a grant to be matched with local contributions.

Christmas – the event that changed the world

I don’t think I need to say what an extraordinary year 2020 has been. I came into the Parish of Inverleigh+Bannockbur+Meredith on 14th February, 5 Sundays later the church buildings were shut down. I only had 4 Sundays with my new congregations, the 5th Sunday I woke up with a sore throat, a symptom of Covid-19, and advised everyone that I would not be leading worship that day. As it turned out the throat had cleared up by mid-morning and must have been the result of a snoring event during the night. In the future I am sure that we will all be able to talk about pre-Covid and post-Covid – our world, our life, our thinking, our behaviour will have changed, even just a little after Corona than it was before Corona came to be present with us. Somewhere in the bible it is written, “May your word not return empty,” meaning what God said may achieve what was intended. It has been my prayer during this devastating experience of Covid-19 that its presence may transform us into a more caring and concerned society. There was another event that had a profound effect on the world over 2020 years ago. A baby was born in very humble circumstances to parents who were not yet married, forced from their home, and later were refugees in Egypt, before returning to Israel after 3 years. The baby was probably known as Joshua ben Joseph, who grew to be the man we now call Jesus of Nazareth.

Whatever we think about the historical person of Jesus, Christians call The Christ, the person and event we celebrate as Christmas changed the world, so we speak of a before and after (BC and AD). Whether or not we accept how Jesus was conceived, how his birth took place, what Christians claim about is identity, this man changed the world he knew, and those influenced by him changed the world with which they interacted, and this has been passed down the generations to influence the life we have here in Australia. I wish you all a happy and Covid-19 free Christmas. The Revd Dr Timothy Smith - Priest in Charge The Anglican Parish of Inverleigh+Bannockburn+Meredith

Bowls Club News

The bowls club members have finally been able to take to the Green for club practice and club competitions ,with the 100 up events played with the winners being Cam Peel ( men) Suzy Coleman ( ladies ) r/up David Andueza - men and Marj Peel - Ladies. Considering the lack of opportunity to play bowls, the standard of play was highly competitive, and many tight games were played throughout the competition. Hopefully the high standard on display will carry over to the shortened Pennant season in the New Year. Socially the members , family and friends were able to, as restrictions eased slightly, take part in a Car Trial on Sunday 1st November. Around 28

travellers took part on what turned out to be a great day weather wise, heaps of fun and friendship, the various cars left Inverleigh bowls club at staggered times heading for destinations unknown following sheets of information provided.

the distance covered was around 70klms and 2hrs duration, as expected anyone who has taken part in this type of venture knows at any time confusion can play a big part and it did, Along the way areas and landmarks were visited that normally I know I would have not seen as they were off the regular routs I would normally take so myself and passengers found out interesting information to areas close to home that we were not aware of or knew of but had never visited that area. Finally we reached our destination just through township of LAL LAL ,down Ironmine road, to a picnic area among the bush setting where our prepared BBQ lunch awaited us. Not all made it unassisted though one couple was finally located a little off track by the rescue team of one (Adrian) they were not at risk of dehydration as the Meredith Hotel had plenty of refreshments to offer, A big thankyou to Faye, Ken and Adrian who arranged this great club day for us to enjoy. In closing Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone and stay safe. Bias Bowler

REMEMBERANCE DAY 2020 - A YEAR TO REMEMBER Remembrance Day 2020, as with ANZAC Day, was to be a subdued day of Memorial as we paused for the Silent Tribute at the 11th hour of the Eleventh day of the Eleventh month to Remember. Allied Nations have been commemorating the Service and Sacrifice of the Men and Women of their Defence Forces on November 11th since 1918 known then as Armistice Day, and now known as Remembrance Day. As a Nation we remember the sacrifices of our Service Men and Women in all areas of conflict , peace keeping duties, natural disaster missions and training exercises in preparation for deployment. This year the silent tribute was observed in many ways in isolation in homes, driveways and electronic media as well as RSL Services with limited numbers in attendance as per COVID restrictions. The Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch held a members only memorial Service at Inverleigh (9 in number) with a wreath laid and other floral tributes laid by members of the community during the day. Prior to and on completion of the service, in my role as Sub-Branch President and on behalf of our branch, I laid a floral tribute at Ban-

nockburn and Teesdale Monuments and our Secretary Chris Johns, laid a floral tribute at Shelford monument. During the service at Inverleigh, something I have not seen very often in past years, a passing truck and car stopped on the road and observed the silent tribute with us. In my young years in south australia, as well as other states, it was a normal practice to stop on the road side prior to 11.00am, alight from the car and observe the silent tribute, shops played the last post, schools observed it in their school grounds and many still do. Flags were all at half mast. Military Conflicts have taken a huge toll in the lives of service men and women over the years and of those who survive and return home, their suffering, both physically and mentally, impacts on many families, as well as their struggle to cope with loss of a loved one or health issues that they return with. So as we gather on days of Memorial our thoughts are with them all.

FILM REVIEWS with Alex

CHRISTMAS TREES INVERLEIGH

I have never seen Rear Window before, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The directing is great, and the story and characters are top notch. This is a great Hitchcock film. The cinematography is great because what the characters see out the window you also see, everything is from the perspective of Jeff so the audience is always with the protagonist. The camera does a lot with very little. The camera never leaves Jeff ’s rear window, which, like a camera, provides a lens to the action going on in his neighbourhood. The acting is great all round, all very convincing characters, especially to James Stewart and Grace Kelly. The relationship of the characters isn’t perfect which is a good indication of how is injury is affecting their relationship. Jeff ’s not a perfect character he’s got problems and shows that no good deed goes unpunished. I highly recommend this film to everyone, I think everyone should watch this film at least once. I am considering rewatching this in black and white to see what it would have been like when it was released. Today’s cool fact about Rear Window is that the entire film was filmed on a set, the courtyard alone measured 91 feet wide, 108 feet long and 40 feet high!

POLICE REPORT FOR DECEMBER 2020

Hello, If you weren’t aware I took November off on long service leave and had Senior Constable Sue MILLER from Bacchus Marsh fill in while I was away. There was a recent incident where a resident had advertised some animals for sale online and some people attended to view the animals and later the animals were stolen from the property. Luckily after making some enquiries S/C Miller was able to recover the animals from a property in a neighbouring town. If advertising items for sale online always try to establish the identity of the prospective buyer before showing them the item wether that be by sighting a driver licence or taking car registration details down. I have had some more reports of vehicles driving dangerously between Inverleigh and Geelong on the Hamilton highway. I have had some reports of a Harley Davidson motorcycle overtaking numerous cars on the wrong side of unbroken lines on several occasions the most recent being on Sunday the 8th of November at around 5.40 pm where a Harley Davidson

If anyone observes this kind of behaviour and has dash cam footage or photos of the offending you can pass it on to me and I can prosecute the rider/driver as I have done in the past with other reports. We are now fast approaching another fire season and I ask that residents take care with activities in the outdoors like welding/ grinding etc. I have in recent years been to several fires that have started this way which could have easily been avoided. Coming up to Christmas and the holiday period with travel restrictions now eased you can expect and probably have already noticed a large increase in the volume of traffic passing through the area. Please all take care on the roads especially when travelling to holiday destinations. Keep Safe, Chris

Golden Plains Shire Council is inviting public feedback on the Teesdale Structure Plan and Planning Scheme Amendment C92, as part of the final step to implement the long-term township plan. The new Teesdale Structure Plan will replace the existing plan, which dates back to 1997. Since then, Teesdale’s population has continued to increase, with the township growing from 1,479 to 1,791 residents between 2011 and 2019. The Teesdale Structure Plan: • Builds on and recognises the existing 1997 Teesdale Structure Plan by formalising a growth area to the north-east of the town, initially identified in 1997; • Encourages residential infill development and commercial development; • Identifies a number of infrastructure and other projects beneficial to Teesdale that are not already considered in existing Council strategies; and • Does not propose any new growth areas outside the existing settlement boundary or any new commercial areas. In preparing the new plan, Council undertook community consultation from 29 August to 20 October, 2019. A total of 198 people completed the online and paper survey or attended one of the two conversation posts held in the town. The Teesdale Structure Plan was endorsed by Council in April and this consultation process is part of the final process to incorporate the plan into the Planning Scheme. From today, the Teesdale Structure Plan and Planning Scheme Amendment C92 are on public exhibition until 25 January 2021. During this time, any person who may be affected by the amendment can make a submission. Submissions must be made in writing and sent by email to enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au, referencing Teesdale Structure Plan, or mailed to: Attn: Strategic Planning, Golden Plains Shire, PO Box 111, BANNOCKBURN VIC 3331. During the public exhibition period, there are a number of ways for residents to find out more about the Structure Plan and Planning Scheme Amendment, including an online drop-in session on Monday 7 December, 2020 from 4.30 to 7pm, and after-hours phone consultations with the Strategic Planning team on Wednesday 9 December and Monday 14 December until 7pm. The Strategic Planning team will also be available to speak over the phone about the plan during business hours from 26 November 2020 to 25 January 2021, except during Council’s Christmas Closure from 5pm, Thursday 24 December 2020 to 8.30am, Monday 4 January, 2021. To take part in a phone consultation either during business hours or the after-hours session, residents can call 5220 7166. The Teesdale Structure Plan, Planning Scheme Amendment C92 and related documents, as well as further information on the community engagement opportunities can be found at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations. The Structure Plan and documents are also available on the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning’s website: delwp.vic.gov.au/public-inspection. To request a hard-copy, residents can call Council’s Customer Service team at 5220 7111. Mayor Cr Helena Kirby encourages interested residents in Teesdale and its surrounds to view the Structure Plan and have their say during the public exhibition process. “The Teesdale Structure Plan is a strategic plan that will guide the long-term growth of the town into the future, providing certainty of the planning direction of the township. “Having developed the Structure Plan with input from the local community last year, Council is now inviting further feedback on the plan and the planning scheme amendment to implement it, and I hope all interested locals will take the opportunity to provide their feedback. “Council has designed this next stage in the consultation process with COVID-19 restrictions and the festive seasons in mind, with feedback open until late January, and phone consultations with the Strategic Planning team available during and after business hours, as well as an online drop-in session in early December.”

VOLUNTEERS INVOLVEMENT AT VICTORIA PARK INVERLEIGH

The minutes for the Victoria Park Committee of Management go back to 1956, the first book of minutes being stored by the Inverleigh Historical Society. The first President was Mr H Crowe, and he remained in that position for many years. But the history before that is not recorded, if anyone in the district can add more to this earlier information we would be delighted. Certainly by 1958 both a Football Club and a Cricket Club

Pat Streefkerk driving Wendanjo Serena at a GDCD club driving event

were well established at the park. In 1962 there was a grant for general improvements and later, showers for the football club were built. There was an old Grandstand which was closed for use in 1965 and later demolished, and a new clubhouse was built in 1974. In 1977 a Nissan Hut was moved to the park. By 1982 there is mention of a Riding Club, which at first was only

permitted to use the area behind the goalposts, but in 1985 the football and cricket clubs moved to a new complex and the Riding Club was permitted to use all the grounds. Some years later a carriage driving club also became a regular user group and the residents of Inverleigh were delighted to see horse drawn carriages around the town and in the park. There has also been a very successful annual fundraiser for the Royal Children's Hospital every Easter, and a Gwyn Wise and Pat Streefkerk with the tree planted in memory of Faye Shaw Daschund Dog Derby in February. Gail Hoiles as Secretary/TreaFor a while there was also a monthly surer, Denise Cook as Booking market to raise funds. At present the Officer and Christa Jones. SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL

Shelford Primary School It’s been fantastic to have an uninterrupted term of learning for all the students. We have been assessing the students to ascertain what areas they may need support in for the remainder of the school year to ensure they are on track with their learning goals. Tree Works We have had the aborists at the school to trim and remove dangerous trees. They have done a brilliant job at tidying up the trees and ensuring the trees are healthy and safe. Reminder for the final school day 17th of December Due to camps and excursions being cancelled for the majority of the year we are planning a celebration for all the students to end the year on a high. We will plan some fun activities for the day and we will get some fish and chips for lunch from the Teesdale Shop.

Breakfast Club Bec and I recently completed the induction for the Breakfast Club. The program will start in term 1, 2021. We will send out correspondence prior to this starting once the food arrives on how this will be implemented. It’s envisaged that the students will arrive earlier at school and be offered a range of breakfast foods including fresh fruit, muslei bars, fruit cups, and cereals. School Reports School reports will be sent home on the last day of term for the students on Thursday 17th of December. Due to the disruptions caused by Covid 19 the Department of Education has provided Pincipals with reporting and assessment guidelines for Semester 2, 2020 and the reports will be similar to those that were completed in Semester 1, 2020.

GARBAGE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION There are changes to Council’s waste and recycling collection service over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. Refer to the table below for your revised collection day during the festive season, and please remember to place your bins out the night before your collection day. Normal Collection Day

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Tuesday 3 November, 2020

IT GRANTS FOR LOCAL KINDERS Golden Plains Shire Council welcomes the Victorian Government’s recent IT grants to five local kindergartens. During Council’s Election Period in late September, the Victorian Government announced Golden Plains Shire Council would receive $6,958 from the Building Blocks Improvement 2020-21 Information Technology program. This funding will provide new IT equipment at five Council-operated Kindergarten Services in Golden Plains Shire. Council’s kindergartens in Teesdale, Inverleigh, Meredith and Bannockburn will purchase new computers, and the Rokewood kindergarten will receive a new iPad and printer. This grant funding will ensure improved access and support children’s learning in the kindergarten environment, and enable Council’s dedicated educators to connect more effectively with families in supporting the continuity of children’s learning at home. Golden Plains Shire CEO Eric Braslis welcomed the funding and the benefit the new equipment will bring to the Council’s kindergarten services. “Our educators have done an outstanding job during this challenging year, and with new computers, iPads and printers, they will be able to better connect with families and support the continuity of children’s learning in the kinder or at home. “Council thanks the Victorian Government for this valuable funding grant to support kindergarten services in Golden Plains Shire.”

AUSTRALIA DAY BREAKFAST 2021 - CANCELLED

The Inverleigh Public Hall Committee regrets that it will not be holding the Inverleigh community breakfast on Australia Day in 2021. The nature of this annual event (mingling, meeting new people and sharing food), and the unknown Covid19 situation – has led to this decision. We look forward to welcoming everyone in 2022, when we will host the event again. The Covid-19 restrictions for Inverleigh Public Hall use are constantly changing, with people at the

Department of Health and Human Services giving us help with interpreting the guidelines for our Hall. In addition, our small volunteer committee is not always able to provide cleaning and monitoring services for hirers. Please be patient with our need to meet all requirements and understand that we are doing our best to reach a stage when bookings will be back to normal. Christine Windle Secretary Inverleigh Public Hall

Merry Christmas The Team at Bannockburn Vet Clinic would like to thank all our clients for their support and understanding during 2020. We wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. Christmas is a great time to have fun with the whole family including your pets.

We are very happy to have our puppy and dog training up and running again. Caroline is a NDTF qualified trainer. We are running classes at the clinic on Saturdays. Caroline also does behavioural consults. For more information, class times and costs please contact the clinic. Grooming

We would like to welcome our new groomer Phoebe.

Once again, thank you for entrusting us with the care of your pets. Have a great 2021!!

Keeping Pets Safe at Christmas

A busy house full of guests and noise can be stressful for animals. Help your pet have a healthy and safe Christmas by following the tips below.

*If you are hosting Christmas celebrations, exercise pets before guests arrive. This will help them de-stress and they are more likely to nap during the festivities. *Create a quiet safe place away from the party for your pet. *Clean up wrapping paper and ribbons, if chewed these can prove dangerous for a pets intestines. *Christmas tree baubles, tinsel and lights may look like ornaments to you but to your pet they are potential toys. *No Alcohol for pets *Keep chocolate away *Dont feed your pet leftovers. Our food is often too fatty and spicy. Cooked bones can splinter.

Leigh News 31 Phoebe is a qualified groomer and has been working in the industry for one year.

Microchips

We are now offering grooming on Wednesday, Thursday and Fridays. Contact the clinic to book an appointment and meet Phoebe.

Often people bring wandering and lost pets into veterinary clinics to keep them safe while their owners are notified. The only accurate way to reunite them with their owners is to scan for a microchip.

Are your pets microchip details up to date?

Each mircochip has a unique number which becomes your pets unique id. This number is linked to your contact details which include your name, current address and phone number. It is vital these details are kept up to date. If you need any help with this our nurses are happy to help.

Clinic Christmas Hours Emergency Veterinary care will be available 24 hours a day during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. For emergencies contact our Vet on 0407 811 222. The clinic will be closed on all public holidays for routine consultations.

Keeping Pets Hydrated this Summer

As the temperature rises we need to keep our pets healthy, hydrated and happy. Pets get hydration from food as well as water. There are many easy ways to keep you pet hydrated during the summer months. Its just about knowing what they like and dont like. We have listed below a few ideas that we hope will help. Add water to kibble Set up plenty of water bowls in the house and garden Walk or exercise you pets in the early morning or evening. Freezing pet friendly ice lollies or adding ice blocks to water bowls. Wetting your pets paws Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Birds should be bought inside during very hot days.

This is a street in Teesdale that has caused a lot of discussion about where the name came from.

I was asked by the Golden Plains Shire when they were developing a new street off Shaws Road if I had any suggestions about a street name, I suggested various names of early settlers, but it was decided a local Aboriginal name should be used. In my book From Native Creek to Teesdale, page 37, I have an article from the Geelong Advertiser Tuesday 29 October 1918, Charles Anthony Corbett Wilson who was the Leigh Shire Engineer for about 50 years and lived at Teesdale for most of that time was asked if he knew where the name Teesdale came from, he also mentioned “I have been told by the blacks that the native name was “Tooliroopah” as near as I can express it” I thought that must be correct, it has proved to be a mystery as no one has been able to find where the name came from, I asked the late Lou Lane a archaeologist who has studied the Aboriginal people around Geelong and across western Victoria, if she knew anything about the name, her suggestion was, it is most likely two words Tooli – their name for Native Hut Creek and Roopah – a name of a plant, somewhat similar to spinach, that was a very important food and was found growing in abundance along Native Hut Creek. Lou also said that the local Tribe were the Tolloora clan of the Wathaurung. Nick Tarbett Unfortunately there are no one left of the people to ask so we ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR have to go with what little information we have. On the subject of naming – the name of Native Hut Creek comes from George Russell who camped for the night at the junction of the Barwon River and Native Hut Creek in 1834 “A great number of blackfellows’ mia-mias were about here, which was the reason why the creek got the name Native Hut Creek” Narrative of George Russell of Golf Hill pp 0403 640 880 82,83. And Teesdale was named by Alexander Skene the surveyndtelectricalservices@gmail.com or, he marked on his field book “Marking township Teesdale” Friday 25th September 1851. Reflections on the impact of covid-19 on our lives

COVID 19 – 2020 In January 2020 clusters of pneumonia cases were discovered in Wuhan, China, which were later diagnosed as COVID 19. Chinese travelled to all parts of the globe at this time, thus infecting many other countries. On 25th January a Chinese national returned to Melbourne, after spending 2 weeks in Wuhan, China, and in 2 weeks he was the 1st confirmed case of covid 19 in Australia, thus becoming patient zero. Within 24 hours there were 3 new cases in New South Wales. Early February Australia’s borders were shut to all non-residents. When global cases had passed 410,000 with almost 20,000 deaths, Australia had approximately 2432 with 9 deaths, resulting of the lockdown of Australia starting. Banks, clubs, hotels, cinemas, places of worship, restaurants and gyms were shut down. Centrelink queues were growing and $6.5 million was spent on welfare recipients. All essential services shut down and schools changed to remote learning from home in Victoria. Only 5 people could attend weddings and only 10 could attend funerals. In March the government announced a travel ban on Australians for the entire world. Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin had suspended all flights – standing 20,000 employees. The cash rate by the Reserve bank was slashed to 0.25%. $260 million was offered by the government in economic support. Social distancing restrictions were introduced – we all had to stay 1.5 metres apart. All people over 70 were asked to stay home and only allowed out for exercise. Panic buying in supermarkets, in particular for toilet paper, pasta, rice and flour. Frontline workers and seniors shopping hours were introduced. The economy was sliding, also suicides and family violence and potential civic unrest were increasing. There were 65 cases in Geelong, but only 1 in the Golden Plains Shire. Two thirds of the cases in Austra-

lia were returned travellers, who had acquired COVID 19 overseas. By April the Ruby Princess cruise ship which disembarked in Sydney with passengers affected by the virus, had 696 confirmed cases let in to the country with 20 deaths nationally. After this returning travellers had to isolate for 2 weeks in selected hotels. Western Australia, South Australia, Northern Territory and Queensland closed their borders. All of this meant that I had to stay home, except for a daily walk, as I was over 80 years of age and also had bronchiectasis and was in the high risk category. My family did my shopping for the next 2 months, but were not allowed to come into my house, leaving it at the front door for me to collect. My neighbours, previously acquaintances, quickly became friends sharing phone numbers and offering me any help that I may have needed. My highlight during that time was a trip to the surgery car park for an influenza injection! We were not allowed into the surgery, so the Doctor and Nurse Jo came out to the car in their protective gear to see me. There were telehealth consultations only and prescriptions were faxed to chemist and delivered to my front door. This meant no Probus, no Red Cross, no Walking Group, no Historical Meetings, no Pool, no Church and no AFL Football. I spent this time house tidying, doing jigsaw puzzles, reading, knitting, phone calls to friends, family and Probus members, video calls to grandchildren, watching u-tube and zoom church services. My car was overdue for a service, so Mazda staff picked it up and brought it back after the service. Cases of COVID 19 started falling in Australia and we were allowed more freedom for a while, but unfortunately a second wave of infections occurred in Victoria in May and June, which was caused by an outbreak in a Melbourne hotel, where returning international travellers had to quarantine for 2 weeks in selected hotels. This resulted in complete lockdown again in Victoria in early August for several months.

This second wave was more widespread and deadlier than the first, with approximately 7000 cases and 907 deaths in Victoria. We had to stay home and only go out for essential reasons, exercise and face masks were compulsory when we left home. It seemed quite strange to see everyone wearing face masks when you were out. You didn’t always recognise people that you should know or know when anyone was smiling! Five of my grandchildren were in Melbourne and were unable to come to Geelong, so I had chats with them on FaceTime to catch up. Granddaughter Sarah was in lockdown in Canada. During this time with many phone calls I was also able to get to know my Probus friends better than just meeting them at the monthly meetings, which was really great. After 2 months on October 26th the good news was that no cases or deaths were recorded, so the restrictions started to be lifted gradually.
