0n the 4th Tuesday of each Month @ 2pm

(Except December & January) VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial Happy New Year to you all and thanks to so many who have sent messages to me, re: Senior Citizen of the

Year award. Can I also direct you to page 20, where the Progress Association Volunteers are providing clarification on regulations with the use of social media platforms. I also would like to highlight, for the benefit of senior members of the community and for those that are not up to speed with technology, the need to be very careful when it comes to "door to door" sales people wanting to sign you up to something new, or for you to change your supplier. This will also include over the phone sales people as well. You will be well aware of sales groups wanting to upgrade your light globes and similar. Be very careful, as one resident found recently. Not only did they change her light globes, but also changed her electrical supplier, despite the "salesperson" insisting they would not do so. Your personal informationis very important to you and while these sales opportunists might know your name and your address, even your phone number, the one piece of information unique to only you is your "date of birth". If they insist on you providing your DOB, this is when you must be very careful. Do Not give them this information unless you are certain what they are offering is what you really need or want. Just send them away and lock your door.

4 Leigh News INVERLEIGH DISC GOLF OFF TO A FLYING START The February photo in the 2022 Inverleigh Historical Society calendar shows Jarrath Sweetten competing in disc golf at the Inverleigh Golf Course and is courtesy of Andrew Ferguson. Sweetten emerged victorious against some of Australia’s best male disc golfers who converged on Inverleigh in April 2019 for the Vic Open tournament, a renowned annual event on the Australian Disc Golf Tour. Disc golf is played in a similar way to traditional golf, except the disc golfer throws specially designed discs with the aim of landing one in an elevated basket instead of using clubs to hit a ball into a hole. The sport’s popularity in Australia has grown steadily over recent years, with an associated increase in membership of the Inverleigh Disc Golf Club. The Inverleigh Golf Course has been home since 2018 to a permanent disc golf course, which has quickly become a favourite of disc golfers of all skill levels. The course winds its way through challenging but scenic woodland terrain and across several golf fairways. The 2019 Vic Open attracted 66 disc golfers from across the country, approximately a third of whom travelled from outside Victoria. Players competed in a range of divisions based on age and skill level across three rounds, with Sweetten and his wife Cassie winning the top-ranked Open divisions for males and females respectively. Inverleigh Golf Club members were integral to the smooth running of the event, assisting with preparation of the course and providing warm hospitality for the competitors over a chilly and windy autumn weekend. After almost two years of disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Inverleigh Disc Golf Club has only recently been able to recommence course maintenance activities ahead of hosting the Australian Disc Golf Championships from February 25-27.

Historical Society Calendar.

A delightful image of two Eastern Grey kangaroos with joeys, captured by Andrea Bolton. It is the cover and January image of the yearly calendar produced for the Inverleigh Historical Society. The kangaroos are an integral part of the Inverleigh Flora & Fauna Reserve (historically referred to as the Common) and are most regularly seen on the golf course, roadsides in the Common, and within the township environs when seeking food.. As more and more houses are being built adjacent to The Common, concerns are being raised about cars, dogs and closed off access routes for the kangaroos and wallabies to reach safety and water in times of stress. The 2022 Calendar is now available for $15 Copies can be purchased at Sonny Cafe & Store or by calling Liz McDonald 5265 1270.

This particular staging of the prestigious annual tournament has already been postponed twice due to COVID-19 – originally from November 2020 and then from November 2021 – and has a capacity field of 196 players from around the nation set to compete. The course they will play on features a full 18 permanent baskets and tee pads – having originated as a nine-basket course – thanks to funding from both the Inverleigh Disc Golf and Golf clubs as well as contributions from sponsors. The current Inverleigh course is regarded as possibly the most difficult in Australian disc golf. An ambition of the Inverleigh Disc Golf Club, however, is to find and establish further tee positions and baskets for a beginner and/or intermediate course in order to help increase disc golf ’s popularity in the region. Inverleigh will also play host to other lower-level disc golf tournaments during 2022 and successfully hosted the South West Classic Teams Disc Golf Event on 8 January this year. Ben Pollard

A Police Story from the past

Dad was community minded and went to a football club meeting in his first year at Inverleigh. He was appointed senior coach and the team won the Woolworth section premiership. After the match he told the players "The town is yours tonight, but I do not want to be called out". I remember a large procession of cars making all soughs of noises slowly coming up the main street, turning at the police station and finishing at Victoria Park which was the original football oval. As things were progressing at the oval with a BBQ and everyone was enjoying themselves, Dad was advised somebody had a gun on them. He immediately went into action to try and find the offender. Unbeknown to him, two of his players sprang into action, followed him and acted as his body guard , if things had got out of hand. The offender was eventually caught, but I don’t know what the outcome was. Whilst on the end of year football trip, Dad was at the front of the bus and one of the players started to get unruly. One of the "bodyguards" said "Don’t worry Harold, I have just put him to sleep for a little while for you". Harold was president and received life memberships from both the golf and tennis clubs. He had a motorized golf buggy and on one occasion when playing in a group of four, he could not start his buggy. It just happened they were playing on the farthest hole from the club house. One of the players said with a funny smile “your spark lead has come off “. Dad soon realized that he had been set up. How many people would be game to do that to the local policeman in fear of retribution? He knew his people and they let it be known they could be counted on at any time. Creative ideas came from the many diverse entries received in the Inverleigh Youth Precinct Vision Competition, which I was pleased to support last year. I know how hard the Inverleigh community has been working to gain support for a Youth Precinct in the town. And I especially know that young people in Inverleigh are passionate about having a place to connect, ride bikes, skateboard, play sport and come together. That’s why I was thrilled to back a competition for young people, seeking their concepts and ideas of what a youth precinct in their town should look like. I donated a mountain bike to the person with the most innovative ideas and best presented concepts. It was an impressive entry by Jack Stones which got the judges’ attention. Jack is now the proud owner of the bike which I was able to present to him at a Friday night film night in December. The many entries submitted included elements such as a bike track, skate park and social basketball facilities. The standard of entries was so high that I also presented ‘highly commended’ certificates to Manon Guijt, Harry Weiler and Jasper Willoughby. Well done to everyone who entered. G'day from the penners. First off, we would like to wish every reader a Happy NewYear. But it has been far from a perfect start to 2022, covid numbers are astounding and it is so sad to hear of so many loved ones dying. Our hearts go out to anyone who has had the experience of having a family member who has had this insidious virus. But enough of the virus, how has the weather been? Teesdale coped a massive storm on the 7th January and it was fierce! Hailstones the size of Tom Bowlers, or for those not familiar with the large marbles, lets try Gum Balls that you get out of the little vending machines. Most of Teesdale's properties turned into a river I think, I know ours did and we sustained some damage but nothing came into the house luckily. I know from the Teesdale face book page that many lost driveways and had a lot of damage. What with a snow storm 18 months ago and all the rain we have had and then the hailstorm, well it really does make you think about climate change seriously, very seriously. But the penners write on, not much stops the creative juices from flowing. We are back at full strength after a short break and raring to get pen to paper. This month’s poem comes from Peter and it a beauty so we hope you enjoy it. Remember our email address is goldenpens4@gmail. com and we can be contacted anytime if you would like to send us a message or perhaps to join us.

The Silent Storyteller I am the silent storyteller. I can tell you stories. Tales of places I have been, things that you have never seen. Tales that once were told to me, when I was a child so free. Tales of things that never were But should have been; you might concur. So many stories I could tell imagination’s great, but, well, Until I speak, or write it down, I remain The silent storyteller.

Thanks to: Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Who is the silent storyteller? Who can tell you stories? Is he standing next to you? Is that her over in the queue? Your grandma, uncle, neighbour, friend, all have their tales, your ear to bend. Mundane, amusing, boring, not - unknown until you hear their lot. All must give voice, and tell their tale before they pass beyond the veil, Or remain, for all eternity A silent storyteller.

FRIENDS GET HELP FROM SATELLITES

Leigh News 15

A grant of almost $1500 has been received by Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve for the purchase of two handheld GPS devices. The funds were given to the Friends group by Bannockburn & District Grants. Presenting the cheque to the group, Bannockburn & District Grants Director, Doug Gadd, said that the board favours supporting small community groups, that have no way of raising their own funds, to achieve their goals. Mr Gadd also said that he would like to see the many newcomers to the area learn more about their local bushland. Friends Group member, Neil Anderton, spoke about the value of the Inverleigh Reserve, being a rare remnant example of grassy woodlands. Mr Anderton reminded the audience that the Reserve is host to over 300 plant species, including three endangered species and five critically endangered species. Friends Group President, Keith Windle, said that the GPS devices will be used to map the locations of wildflowers in the Reserve. They will also be used to record the locations of the noxious weed, boneseed, which has the potential to severely damage biodiversity in the Reserve, as has happened extensively in the You Yangs. Seeds from the boneseed shrub can remain viable for over ten years, and, with the use of the GPS devices, Friends Group members will be able to visit each infestation site annually to remove any new seedlings. Mr Windle said that the Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve greatly appreciate the funding from Bannockburn & District Grants. Enquiries about the Friends Group: Contact Keith Windle, phone 0429 651 298.

POLICE REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 2022 Hello All, I hope everyone had a good Christmas and New Year and if you were able to manage it to have a holiday after another COVID ravaged year. I came across a lot of holiday traffic mainly heading through down to the coast and continued to issue a lot of infringements to vehicles mainly speeding through the town and on other country roads around the response zone. I issued a couple of licence suspension infringements in December including 92 & 88/60 km/h zone Hamilton Hwy Inverleigh, 132/100 H Hwy B Plains and on New Years Eve I detected a local Bannockburn probationary driver doing 138/100 km/h zone in Murghebuloc. All have been issued with infringements that included a 3 or 6 month suspension depending on the speed. In the lead up to Christmas we had two serious collisions in the space of a week where cars ran off the Rokewood Shelford Road Shelford colliding with fences and gates. The single vehicle collisions resulted in the vehicles flipping and rolling one onto it’s roof and they were both extensively damaged and were written off. Inexperience and fatigue appear to be the causes in both. I also attended a serious collision on the Inverleigh Shelford Road Inverleigh in the early hours where a kangaroo hopped onto the road in front of a motorcycle causing a collision. The result was the motorcycle was then knocked right and collided into a trailer being towed by a car coming the other way. The rider unfortunately was very seriously injured and was transported to hospital. I was called to another collision between a vehicle and a kangaroo on the Hamilton Hwy Berrybank just the other week where the vehicle required towing due to the damage received in

the collision. Please be careful driving on the roads especially where wildlife are known to frequent especially during dawn/dusk periods. In relation to a road where wildlife is frequently encountered please note the speed limits on Common Road have been reduced between the golf club and the Teesdale Road. The speed limit on Harvey Road Bannockburn has also been reduced to 80 km/h for the majority of the section from the railway line to Bannockburn. Please be aware of these reduced limits. I have also received complaints about driver behaviour on some of the roads without lane markings like Cemetery Road where vehicles are driving down the centre of the road and not moving to the left. Please be considerate of other motorists and move to the left when approaching. Another holiday period and more issues coming to light with campers by the River in Inverleigh again. I have received calls re people damaging trees for firewood, fires and even campers jumping off the Winchelsea Road bridge into the river!!! I even came across one group of campers who had a fire going about 3 metres behind one of the council fire prohibition signs, I just couldn’t believe it and when I pointed it out they claimed they had to have it as they wanted to cook a steak, they obviously didn’t care about the sign and the dry country around their site they were just thinking about themselves and what they wanted. If people are damaging the trees/leaving rubbish please let the council know and the CFA and myself are regularly patrolling re fires being lit there. Keep safe Chris

The IPA has had to take this step for a number of reasons including: 1 Addressing the recent High Court of Australia decision Fairfax Media v Voller. https://eresources.hcourt. gov.au/downloadPdf/2021/HCA/27. 2 A threat of legal action against the Leigh News and the IPA. 3 The new On Line Safety Act 2021 that came into force on 24 January 2022. The High Court said that media organisations, even small ones like the Leigh News, are publishers of all third party comments posted on their Facebook pages and can be liable if those comments are defamatory. The new On Line Safety Act makes the IPA and the Leigh News a social media service provider. The legisla-

tion gives the new eSafety Commissioner wide powers to support on line safety and deal with complaints about cyber bullying of children, adults and sharing of intimate images without consent. The IPA, as publisher, had to make these changes to the terms of use to reduce the risk of being sued for defamation and to comply with the new On Line Safety legislation.

What has changed

Social media is a 24/7 medium. Doing the best we can, our moderation capacity is not 24/7. So, while our page is monitored closely, there may be some posts which will have commenting capabilities turned off or user contributions restricted. We will continue vetting posts before they appear on the group wall and would appreciate members reporting any inappropriate, insulting, racist, sexist, or defamatory comments so we can respond appropriately. Inverleigh is a caring and supportive community which enjoys its social media. We encourage that engagement and exchange of ideas to continue and thrive. Please use the Facebook page respectfully. It may be a cliché, but please: Be Kind and Be Nice. Thank you. John Bolitho Assistant Secretary Inverleigh Progress Association

Solar Power for Inverleigh Public Hall

The Inverleigh Public Hall Committee applied to DELWP for a grant for solar power for the Hall. We were selected to go to the second stage of the process, which was an extensive energy audit to determine power use, need and suitability for a solar system. As a result, we received a grant for a 6.6 kw system with 18 solar panels and 2 inverters. Blake Driden, Tyler Owens, Trav Owens and Justin Pillich of Western District Solar and Electrical installed the system on the roof of the main hall on Friday 21st January.

COMMUNITY BANK SUPPORTS LOCAL CFA

The Winchelsea Bendigo Community Bank has been delighted to support community groups in the Inverleigh area and again they have supported the immediate needs of the local Fire Brigade to assist with the purchase of some important equipment as we enter the height of the fire danger season. Brigade captain Andrew Collins was delighted to accept the funding, expressing the relief it gives to the general fundraising pressure on the group. Active member numbers have been reduced in recent times for a number of reasons, but the brigade still needs to be correctly equipped to deal with the wide variety of call outs that are received during the year. While many people would think that bushfires are the primary activity for the brigade members, Andrew was quick to point out the alarm

goes off for many reasons. “Traffic accidents are a common reason for our services, as well as house fires and we often get requests to support neighbouring brigades.” the hard working volunteer said. “We would really love to see new residents to the region come down to the station and make themselves known. They might just find that being a volunteer is just the thing to help out the community.” The Inverleigh Fire Brigade ran their usual pre Christmas Lolly Run around the town with the well known and much loved Mr Claus happily mounted on the tanker. If you are interested in learning more about the local Fire Brigade, please contact Andrew Collins on 0448 651 115 and learn more about how you may be able to assist and start a long term connection to this vital community group. We welcome items in good condition, not stained or broken. We are not able to sell electrical items. We receive a great deal of material and it is all gone through to select material which experience tells us will sell. Unfortunately a great deal of material ends up in rubbish bins or is taken to the Geelong Recycling Centre or to a bonfire somewhere. All this costs the Op Shop money and our volunteers time. If material does not sell at your garage sale, it will not sell from the Op Shop. Please sort through all your goods carefully before donating them and dispose of your own rubbish. Thank you all. TABLE OF CONTENTS •Insect Bites •Dementia in Pets IN OTHER NEWS

Insect Bites Our pets are curious creatures and will often stick their nose where it doesn't belong. Insect stings are quite common in pets, especially in the warmer months, because they spend so much time outdoors running and playing on grass and in bushes. Bee stings, wasps, fleas, ticks and spider bites are the most common causes of insect bite reactions in pets.

Symptoms of a sting or bite: We would like to welcome and introduce our new Veterinarian Dr. Maddi Hammond. You may have already met Dr Maddi, she has been working at the clinic on Saturdays as a Vet nurse while completing her degree in Veterinary Medicine. Dr Maddi is looking forward to seeing and treating the wide range of animals that come to our clinic.

• • • • •

Sudden onset of yelping, whining, limping Drooling Redness and swelling localised or all over the body Restlessness Licking, chewing, pawing or scratching at the bite site

A severe reaction includes: • • • • •

Severe swelling Difficulty breathing Vomiting/Diarrhoea Pale gums Collapse

Diagnosis is based on clinical signs and observation of the pet being stung/bitten.

Pet Facts

Dogs have an amazing sense of smell. A German Shepherd has 220 million smelling cells compared to a humans 5 million. Dogs have a visual range of 250 degrees compared to a humans range of 180 degrees.

If you suspect your pet has suffered from an insect bite or sting, keep them calm and still as possible. This will slow down the heart rate and in turn slow down the venom travelling around their body. Symptoms will start to appear around 20 minutes after the sting but may be delayed so close monitoring is critical. Try to stop them licking or scratching at the site. A cold wet towel placed over the site may help reduce some of the swelling and pain. Don't give them any medications, such as antihistamines as a wrong dosage can prove fatal.

Dogs nose prints are as unique as a humans fingerprint. Overall cats have a better memory than dogs Cats can jump up to five to six times their height. Rabbits perform an athletic leap known as a "Binky" when they are happy performing kicks and twists in mid air. Goldfish can remember things that happened up to 3 months ago

If your pet is showing signs of an allergic reaction or anaphylaxis from a sting, bring them straight to the clinic. Treatment is based on the type of insect bite, the number of bites, and the severity of clinical signs.

Dementia in Pets

More and more of our dogs and cats are living into their senior years and just like elderly humans, pets can suffer from dementia also known as cognitive dysfunction syndrome, with effects similar to those of Alzheimers.

Dogs Die In Hot Cars

The early signs of dementia can be difficult to detect. They can often be misinterpreted as "just getting old"

Signs of Dementia in Pets: If you find a distressed pet left in a hot car please call the Victorian Police on 000. The police are equipped to dispatch officers quickly from the nearest police station which is critical under these circumstances. Well fitted fly masks can be used if your horses' eyes tend to get irritated by flies.been working for the past 2 years in a mixed practice in New South Wales. Disorientation - such as being confused or getting lost in familiar environments. Staring at walls. Inappropriate vocalisation - Meowing for no reason, howling, barking or whining. Lack of self grooming. House training and other learnt behaviours may deteriorate. Sleep-wake cycles may change such as waking at night and sleeping during the day. Failing to get out of the way when someone opens a door.

If your pet is exhibiting any of the above symptoms, it's important to seek veterinary treatment.

With many celebrations on hold due to the Pandemic, some members got together for a fun day rolling a few down and enjoying good company to boot. Winners and runners up on the day were presented with "Australian Made" Hampers. Well done to Ken Hopkins and John Croft for being overall winners for the day, with Max Peel and Anne-Maree Tarbett the runners up. Thanks to Anne-Maree for coming up with the plan for the day.
