The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial Hello again to everybody. The shortest Day of the year is now behind us and its all looking good for the future. You will notice on pages 26 and 27 a submission from David Bruce, from Teesdale. This is a survey for Teesdale residents where you are able to tell Council what it is you would like to see in your Community in the future. Every town has an opportunity to prepare a Community Plan, via a survey. Inverleigh residents will recall the recent opportunity to complete the Inverleigh Community Plan Survey, with the results of that survey now available to read on the Inverleigh Web Site "inverleigh.org.au". Teesdale residents, also take note of a Public Meeting in the Teesdale Public Hall on the 11th August @ 7:30pm. You will be made very welcome. Please go along and have your say and contribute to your local community. Have a good month everybody. I'll be back in August with another Leigh News.

A Lasting Friendship

On 26th April, 1976, the Inverleigh Pre-School commenced at the Public Hall with Mrs Beryle Wray as the Directress and Elisabeth Eddy her assistant. In these early days the equipment for the children had to be set up each morning and put away every afternoon so that the hall was available for other users. A hardworking committee soon raised the funds for a suitable building on the site of the current Early Learning Centre, and Beryle and Lis created a creative, nurturing space for the children. A firm friendship grew between the two leaders which has continued over the

Leigh News 3

intervening years, and in early June, Elisabeth was delighted to join with family and friends in Bendigo to celebrate Beryle’s 100th birthday. As well as five generations of her family being present, the special cards were more numerous than usual. Joining with a message from the Queen were the Governor General, Prime Minister (ex), State Governor, Premier and local politicians. Mrs Wray greeted those present with her usual warm smile and kind words. These photos show their friendship for forty-six years with Opening Day photo and Birthday smile. Liz McDonald

Occasional Resting Place

If you have visited the Inverleigh Cemetery recently, most likely you will have seen or even rested on the new seats. Two seats have been placed in the middle of the cemetery for visitors to rest and reflect. Contrary to popular belief, the Cemetery Trust does not receive any direct funding from local or state government sources, and all maintenance must be from Trust funds. Special improvements such as these seats and the tree removal are grants. The seats were shared 50/50 with a Golden Plains Community Grant and special assistance was given by Alan Oliver (concrete pad) and Geoff Morgan (gravel landscaping). Our next fundraiser is a: Trivia Night on 19th November at the Inverleigh Public Hall

Leigh News 7

Please save the night and look out for upcoming details. The Cemetery Trust wishes to recognise the outstanding contribution that Sandy McCallum and Des Guinane have given to the community through their years as Chairman and Secretary. In fact their efforts helped to keep the cemetery “local” for many years and we now have a strong local committee. Tonya Allen has taken on the role of Secretary, Roger Butcher is the Treasurer and Sandy is Sextant to share his knowledge. Leigh News 11

As a tribute to Brian I have included one of his crossword puzzles, which he provided to the Leigh News over many years. The one below is from March 2012 and the winner for each month was notified in the following month. Brian produced each crossword himself under the pseudonym of "The Brain" and from all acounts had a large following each month. I will endeavour to include the solution to this crossword in the August edition.

12 Leigh News RSL-INVERLEIGH A band of returned men came home from war and settled into the Soldier Settlement between Inverleigh and Barunah. They started up what is now known as Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch. These local men organised for some land to be donated from the McDonald family and a farmhouse was donated from the Hutchins family. The house was transported with great care to the site where it currently sits as our local Sub-Branch. The group of locals worked hard to put everything back together to make their new digs. For transportation security reasons the round window was removed with great care so as to protect it from potential damage. The volunteers who out everything back together were not builders, there were farmers and returned soldiers supported by their families. They were people with integrity, hard workers, volunteers working together with a common goal. In keeping with their concern of the round window, great care was taken to put it back. They worked hard to ensure it would never come out of its final resting place right at the side. This round window is without a doubt the only window in our village thst does not shudder when a huge freight train thunders through. It was put back into its pride of place carefully wedged in, never to be removed. When the work was complete that day it was noted that although perfectly placed, perfectly level and perfectly stuck forever, it was also noted that the stained glass boat depicted in the window was upside down! This is how it stays to this very day and how it will stay forever. Inverleigh RSL Sub-Branch will be keeping this beautiful house as their abode for as long as the Sub-Branch exists. Plans are being made to renovate according to its character. Plans are to bring the building into current building code standards as the law dictates for all buildings for public use. The toilet/laundry block out the back will be

THE ROUND WINDOW

replaced and an extension is also being considered to safely house memorabilia. Grants will be sought to fund this and the current Fundraising Committee will be raising funds to undertake the works to restore this beautiful building and maintain a safe, welcoming, inviting environment for members and visitors and to continue the original culture of this beautiful establishment. As I walk past this building now, I can’t but think of the amazing things previous RSL members have done for the generations that follow them. I will forever give a little chuckle at the round window. And I am so delighted it is still upside down. Thank you Catherine. Sue Maguire.

G’Day from the penners from the cold confines of July. As the winter season chugs along, I am reminded of the wonderful scents of winter in our lovely country area. No exhaust fumes to choke the back of your throat, or industrial smells that sometimes can be intolerable. Or who can even forget the stench of rotting seaweed if you happen to be anywhere along the waterfront. Out here all we get is fresh, fresh air with the unmistakable aroma of eucalypt, wattle and the sometimes heady smell of nature breaking down forest mulch. To some the warming essence of wood smoke is a delight to the olfactory, but if your neighbours are burning their pile of rubbish, that can be over whelming as I have just recently experienced. But after a day the wind picked up a bit and blew the remnants of the smoke away. So, no great harm done. Just one of the joys of living out here in the country. Today’s poem comes from Gordon, his work is always of a great standard and a pleasure to read. He whipped this one up in an evening and despite his socalled displeasure (?) for writing poetry we believe he under sells himself. We would be happy to hear from you, the readers on what you think of this and any writings you read in this column. We can be contacted via our email address goldenpens4@gmail.com THOUGHTS ON AN ALARM CLOCK The dreaming mind writhes and claws, Unwilling to face the chill reality of dawn, A clutching hand emerges to blindly trawl For the clock that shatters dreams with its shrieking scorn. Vibrant echoes ebb slowly away, Allowing trembling silence to return in uncertain waves. And the unwilling waker lifts his voice to curse the clock That so cruelly dashed sleep from the eyes of its slave. But still the waker lies unmoving – like one struck dead His eyes stare pulsing hate at the tameless clock. Then superhuman effort rips him from bed’s warm embrace Whilst the clock, unscathed, lives on to the next weary morn.

Thanks to: Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Tick! Tock! Tick! Tock! I think we can all relate to this Gordon. Well done! Until next month that is it for the penners.

POLICE REPORT FOR JULY 2022 Hello all, Recently there was a theft of motor vehicle from outside the Inverleigh Primary school where a vehicle was stolen by opportunistic criminals passing through the area. On 31/5/22 at about 1230 pm, members from Western Region crime squad and Geelong Criminal Investigation unit attended at a residential premises in Norlane. During this time the stolen vehicle was located in the rear yard. The vehicle had been resprayed and had the canopy and roof racks removed as well as other contents. A male was arrested and remanded at Geelong for these matters and other incidents. Another two males were also arrested by the Western Region crime squad in relation to the spate of thefts from farms in Inverleigh, Teesdale and Shelford in late April which I mentioned in a previous article. They were arrested in mid May and also remanded in custody so hopefully these issues will no longer occur. Just a general crime prevention message: Please keep your vehicles secure, do not leave personal belongings like phones and other devices, jewellery and cash in vehicles, keep your houses and sheds secure when not around and if possible keep farm gates shut and secured to deter opportunistic criminals driving in and looking around for items to steal. Sur-

veillance cameras can also be a deterrent and can be invaluable for any investigation of an offence on your property if you are unfortuanate enough to have one occur. HARVEY ROAD, HARVEY ROAD, HARVEY ROAD Bannockburn!!!!!!! Please be aware a large section of Harvey Road on the Bannockburn side of the railway line is now 80 km/h. It is well sign posted and while I have been gesturing at motorists to slow down!! repeatedly I will not be doing that forever. Please obey the posted speed limits and avoid having an awkward conversation with me or other Police. Please also obey the roadworks speed limits, I know there are several sections of roadworks currently on the Hamilton Hwy and drivers can get frustrated with the delays especially when running late but the limits need to be obeyed for the safety of roadworks staff. If you are caught doing more then 25 km/h over the limit it means a 3 month suspension of your driving licence!!, 6 months for 35 km/h over and 12 months and a vehicle impoundment for 45 km/h over. Keep safe Chris

Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve Winter Birds.

A friend recently went for a walk in the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve. He said “It was very quiet. Where are all the birds? Do they migrate to warmer climes in winter?” The short answer is no, but with a few exceptions. Unlike in the northern hemisphere where many birds migrate to get away from the severe winters, here in southern Australia our winters are relatively mild and there is very little large-scale regular migration. But there is some movement of birds during autumn and winter. Yellow-faced Honeyeaters and Dusky Woodswallows move north in autumn. Flame Robins and Pied Currawongs come down from the high country to the relative warmth of coastal areas. Pink Robins and Silvereyes cross Bass Strait on their way to somewhere warmer. Crimson Rosellas who breed in the Otways move into more open areas and are seen regularly in winter around Inverleigh. These birds may stay awhile in the Reserve, adding to the population of resident birds – Magpies, Superb Fairy-Wrens, Pardalotes, White-winged Choughs, Red Wattlebirds and other honeyeaters. But my friend was right – it is quieter in winter but certainly not silent. Birds still need to proclaim their territory and keep contact with the family group or flock. Winter is a time for keeping warm and staying safe. Soon enough their biological clocks will click over and the bush will come alive with the calls of birds advertising for a mate. The Friends group will lead a bird walk in Spring – date to be announced. But until then, take a walk in the reserve on a winter’s day, maybe with the sun shining. It’s a special place. But it is true that the birds were probably quiet. In winter the birds are busy getting on with their life and avoiding the worst of the winter by variety of means. Glen White

Emergency Vehicles and passing them.

Some of the jobs the fire brigade gets called to often involve being parked on the side of the road to deal with what ever the incident is. Often it is traffic control or putting out a vehicle related fire on a roadway. Sometimes it is because we cannot get down a driveway to a house fire. Any vehicle with red and blue lights on need to approached with caution. Sometimes you might be required to stop and wait and other times you are allowed to pass. When passing you now must not exceed 40 kmh. This is to protect the personnel that are attending the scene and provide them with a safer workplace. When passing please pay attention to your driving and don’t get distracted by what is happening at the incident, it is not uncommon to see drivers nearly cause another incident with a near miss, as they are not looking where they are going as passing. Also don’t try to take photos while passing. This applies to all emergency vehicles and not just fire trucks. Take care. Ewen Peel, Inverleigh Rural Fire Brigade.

Strengthening Community

We often use the word community to describe the collective of those within a specific geographic location. But there are smaller communities we belong to inside and outside our geographic community. Groups like the Historical Society, Bowls Club, Men’s Shed, a Church congregation, a School, those we sit with at the football, or a formal committee, are also communities. But let’s not forget families, even if it is only two people, slightly bigger if there are children or extended family involved. Whatever kind of community we belong to, when we get together, we catch up on what is happening with others, we care for each other, we encourage each other, and we can learn from each other. It is also a great opportunity to reflect on, and strengthen, your community. What event in the past year gave you joy and why? Sometimes the low points or mundane things stick out the most and dominate our thinking. Put effort into focusing on the good things. It could be something big like new members to your organisation, or success in advocating something for the community, or becoming parents. Or it could be something more simple – a social night of trivia full of laughter. How was your community challenged? Remember, being challenged or struggling doesn’t equal failure, but are opportunities for growth. Maybe you experienced a shift in roles or finally had to address an underlying conflict. Acknowledging, together, the areas you are working on helps you feel united and connected. Where were your successes? In what ways or areas did your community have a win in the past year? Maybe you really got on top of your finances or see-

ing growth in your children. Perhaps you worked together to overcome the challenges you talked about in the previous question. Acknowledge and appreciate the ones who contributed to your success. Talk about how you can build on your strengths to overcome future challenges. What’s something you’re looking forward to in the next year? Sharing hopes and dreams and working to bring them to fruition gives a sense of optimism and reinforces the commitment you have in your community. If you don’t have any dreams, then take the opportunity to talk about something that gets all of you excited. What’s one goal you want to reach before your next anniversary? Setting a goal is a practical way to begin making your dreams a reality. Consider a goal you can realistically reach in the next year of community – it might be a long-term goal like saving for a maintenance project, or something short-term, like having a social gathering every second month. Talk about what you’ll need to do to reach your goal; it will be something to reflect on as an achievement at your next annual gathering or celebration. With each passing year, your community will gain more insight, perspective, and confidence in the purpose for which you are working together. Teesdale Community Plan Survey 2022

Community Planning is a Council backed process where community members come together and take action to improve their community. Community members develop a community plan that outlines projects they will undertake to make their town a better place to live. Our last community plan included; •Upgrading the public toilets at Turtle Bend, •Implement the basketball/netball half court at Turtle Bend, •Make arrangements with Meredith Community House for activities run at Teesdale community hall, •Support community events like “Teesdale live” and the “Christmas Carols / market”, •Advocating for a pedestrian crossing near the shop, •Advocating for a walking/riding track on the road reserve to Bannockburn. To assist in the planning process, please complete the following short survey and place in the box at the Teesdale general store. Alternatively, the survey can be completed and submitted online at :

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/2C96ZZW.

We welcome items in good condition, not stained or broken. We are not able to sell electrical items. We receive a great deal of material and it is all gone through to select material which experience tells us will sell. Unfortunately a great deal of material ends up in rubbish bins or is taken to the Geelong Recycling Centre or to a bonfire somewhere. All this costs the Op Shop money and our volunteers time. If material does not sell at your garage sale, it will not sell from the Op Shop. Please sort through all your goods carefully before donating them and dispose of your own rubbish. Thank you all. IN OTHER NEWS National Desexing Month

Caring for senior pets Age varies by breed and body size. Larger breed dogs tend to age faster than smaller breeds. If your dog or cat is over the age of eight years they are considered to be in their senior years. As with humans, our pets often slow down both physically and mentally as they age.

Once again we are happy to be taking part in the National Desexing Network - National Desexing Month.

Pets can not tell us when they feel unwell! Being on top of your pet's health care is crucial. The risk of disease increases with age therefore early detection and treatment can provide a better outcome. Regular check-ups at least twice a year are vital for aging pets. Early signs of age-related diseases:

During the month of July we are offering 20% discount on all desexing.

• • • • •

Excessive drinking or urinating Change in appetite Weight gain or loss Becoming withdrawn from family Persistent cough

Desexing not only helps to ensure fewer unwanted and homeless animals bur research has proven that desexed animals can actually live healthy and longer lives.

Desexing is a day stay procedure. Contact the clinic for more information or to book your pet in for surgery.

Why have a senior check up? A consultation with our Vet gives you a chance to discuss any physical or behavioural changes you have noticed in your pet. Health problems can be identified and a treatment plan can be discussed and initiated before they become too serious. We can perform blood and urine tests. Blood tests look at the function of the body's organs, immune system and the presence or activity of disease. Urine analysis screens for such conditions as diabetes, urinary tract infections and kidney disease. Our senior pets a very special, they are gentle and wise. If you have any concerns with your senior pet book an appointment with one of our vets.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Friday 17 June, 2022

NAIDOC WEEK IN GOLDEN PLAINS National NAIDOC Week will be held from 3 to 10 July. To celebrate National NAIDOC Week, Council will be hosting two Cultural Heritage Talks for community members from 12 to 2pm on Tuesday 28 June and Wednesday 6 July, at the Woady Yaloak Historical Society Offices, at The Well, 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale. The Cultural Heritage Talks will be led by proud Wadawurrung woman Bonnie Chew and community members are invited to bring along any cultural artefacts or photographs for Bonnie to discuss or identify. A light lunch will also be provided. Bonnie is the director of Mirriyu Cultural Consulting with extensive knowledge in Mental Health First Aid, Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Management, Reconciliation Action Planning, Incarceration, Genealogy, Health and Education. She currently holds two Ministerial appointed positions, serving as an Indigenous Independent Prison Visitor and Indigenous Heritage representative of Victoria on the Victorian Public Records Advisory Council. More recently, Bonnie has become a Council Member of the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council. Bonnie is a proud Golden Plains Shire resident and lives in Haddon. Council will also be lighting up the Golden Plains Civic Centre throughout NAIDOC week. Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble encouraged the Golden Plains community to get involved in the Cultural Heritage Talks taking place as part of Council’s NAIDOC Week celebrations. “NAIDOC Week is a chance for Golden Plains residents to learn about First Nations cultures and histories. I encourage the community to embrace the opportunity to recognise the culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at Council’s NAIDOC Week activities.” “NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate the many who have driven and led change in our communities, and Bonnie Chew is a great person to lead Council’s NAIDOC Week events. Bonnie brings with her a wealth of knowledge and I hope residents take this opportunity to learn about Wadawurrung history and heritage within Golden Plains.” The theme of National NAIDOC Week this year is ‘Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!’ Getting up, Standing Up and Showing Up can take many forms whether it’s seeking proper environment, cultural and heritage protections, constitutional change, a comprehensive process of truth-telling, working towards treaties, or calling out racism – we must do it together. The relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians needs to be based on justice, equity, and the proper recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights. Golden Plains Shire Council is committed to reconciliation with its local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and in March 2021, Council endorsed its Draft Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). Following engagement and approval from Reconciliation Australia, the final Reflect RAP will be presented to Council in the coming months.

Leigh News 45 July 2022 Calendar INVERLEIGH'S FOGGY MORNING

On 10th July, 2021 fog enveloped the Inverleigh district. It was what was called a “pea souper” and many lovely photos were taken around the town. While many of us were mentally a little foggy with Covid lockdowns and regulations, it had been some years since such a widespread fog event. Fifty years ago a trip back from Winchelsea meant a passenger had their head out the window watching the edge of the road and listening for sounds of cars or trains. We are fortunate these days to have the side white lines to define a road surface. And a reminder from Vic Roads: Incorrect use of fog or additional headlights (driving lights) can result in a fine and loss of points from your licence. Road Rule 217 states that drivers must not use front or rear fog lights unless driving in fog or other hazardous weather conditions that cause reduced visibility.

So what is fog?

The Bureau of Meteorology provides the following explanation The World Meteorological Organization defines fog as a suspension of very small water droplets in the air, that reduce visibility at ground level to less than one kilometre. Fog reduces horizontal ground-level visibility to less than 1km. If you can see for further than 1 km it's not fog, it's mist. Fog forms in the same way as cloud, except the process takes place at the surface rather than higher in the atmosphere. For both fog and clouds to form, the air temperature needs to cool to the dewpoint temperature—the temperature at which condensation occurs. Once this happens, the invisible water vapour that surrounds us condenses into tiny water droplets and it is these that form fog. A classic pattern for fog formation is to

have rain falling late in the day, followed by the arrival of a high-pressure system that brings clear skies and light winds overnight. The rain increases the dewpoint temperature, while the light winds and clear skies overnight maximise the cooling of the air. This type of set-up often leads to some of the thickest fogs. The foggiest city in Australia is Canberra with an average of 47 fog days. And have you seen a Fogbow? They form in the same way as rainbows, with the sun's rays being refracted and reflected by the water droplets in the fog. However, fog droplets are typically much smaller than the rain drops that form rainbows. This leads to smaller amounts of refraction and reflection so the colours in a fogbow are less distinct and often appear to be white. While searching for interesting facts for an article, the internet can take unexpected turns. When taking photographs of fog - the #1 suggestion is ‘first find your fog’: and Burl Ives was jailed for singing the English folk song ‘Foggy, Foggy Dew’, a title I was about to use for this article. The Inverleigh Historical Society is always grateful for local images for their annual Calendar. This fundraiser commenced in 2009 and so new and interesting photos are welcome. Please contact Liz McDonald, at lizlimmy@gmail.com if you can assist. The Historival Society now meets on 3rd Wednesday at the hall at 2pm. and we are learning film and editing, displays and promotions and 150 years of State education. Liz McDonald
