Why would I head down to "ZINEverleigh" this year?
1. Curiosity. There's so many interesting, weird and wonderful zines (pronounced zeens) and art to see at a zine fair. Different small subcultures come together at a zine fair and the result is amazing.
2. Great food. Soup, Sausage rolls and hotdogs from the CWA along with cakes, biscuits and slices from Inverleigh Playgroup.
3. To add to your zine collection. A standout for me last year was a great photographic collection of backyards - called 'Backyard Peepers'. There were three editions last year and there's been a couple more added to that this year.
4. Art prints. Freddie Mercury, cats and potted plants are some features you could expect. (Yes please!)
5. Art Booklets. There are a range of one-ofa-kind handmade art booklets to be endlessly admired.
6. To find out more about zines.
What are they? 'Zeens' are handmade, independently produced, often photocopied booklets on a range of subject matter, generally not created for making a profit, but to share interests, art, photos, ideas, poetry, stories, protest, points of view. can be hand drawn, collaged, painted, typed, and are fascinating and fun.
7. Community. A great low-cost day out in this fabulous local town, supporting artists and young people. 27th July 10am to 2pm Contributions to an art
We would love your contributions to an art booklet we are creating to hand out at The ZINEverleigh Zine Fair on Saturday, July 27th. The Inverleigh Progress Association is supporting the creation of the art booklet and we are hoping that people in town might submit items to be included.
Items could be artworks, stories, collages, comics, observations or photographs and can be sent to zineverleigh@gmail.com by 12th July.
They will then be compiled into a fabulous 'zine' about Inverleigh. We welcome contributions from all ages and abilities.

Victoria Park Reserve is the town’s hidden treasure donated to the people of Inverleigh back in the late 1880’s for their use and pleasure.
Originally the towns sports ground, it is the current home of Leigh District Riding Club (over 20 years) and is also used by many diverse groups including the Geelong and District Harness Club, Victorian Dog Tracking, an overflow ground for the Barwon Horse Trials, Central Highland Caravanners, Inverleigh Kindergarten and the Good Friday Appeal to mention a few, as well as being enjoyed by the many locals that walk their dogs and work horses in a safe environment away from traffic.
It’s listed with the Golden Plains Shire as an Emergency Evacuation Site. So as you can see the Reserve is a very important asset for the Inverleigh community.
The grounds belong to DECCA and while a committee of management is in place and the grounds used and maintained (beautifully by volunteer Rob Debets) they will remain for future residents and user groups to enjoy.
Our AGM will be held on the 10th September, if you feel able to commit to being on the committee you will be most welcome.
Please consider this your opportunity to secure Victoria Park Inverleigh Reserves future going forward.

Inverleigh Progress Association Annual Report June 2024
The question is often asked. What does the Inverleigh Progress Association do?
Please find the answer below.
Once again, the Inverleigh Progress Association has achieved many things over the past twelve months. As a result of our Community Plan of 2023, our Key Priority list highlighted priority projects for the use of the Community seed funding that was received.
One of the Priority Projects being a free Community Event. The hope being that as many community members would come together to enjoy a social connection with others, whilst also enjoying music and other activities.
This event was held at the beginning of December, originally planned to take place at Yarrum Yaluk Bun Park, but later moved to the Inverleigh Hall due to the forecast of inclement weather. We were able to use that hall and fenced outdoor space, ensuring a safe place for the attending children. The IPA seed funding paid for the face painting, music and the sausage sizzle, kindly cooked by the Lions Club. The CFA Tanker that was on display proved a great attraction. Those that attended hailed it as a huge success. The event has been booked again for this year on Friday Dec 6th.
We were pleased, once more, to help at the Australia Day Breakfast. It is always a lovely start to Australia Day, to see so many locals taking the opportunity to catch up with each other.
This year, an added opportunity to pick up a bargain, with the left-over chairs, blow up mattresses and couches left behind by the Music Festival goers. This huge number of items were displayed in the Hall, every item was sold, enabling the funds raised (almost $1,000.0), to go to the Hall committee.
Another item on the Key Priority List was to enable the local Historical group to raise awareness and preserve the History of the Township. This included the updating of the historical walking brochure. Seed funding of about $4,000.0 has been allocated for this project. Although not yet completed, the project is very close to the publication of this new brochure.
Two members of the IPA, being Deb Morrison and myself, meet every three months with Phil Josipovic and Vicki Shelton.
Phil: Oversees Infrastructure and Environment.
Vicki: The Manager for Asset Services.
These meetings are proving to be a very effective way of communicating the community’s expectations and the understanding by council of those expectations. It was during a walk-through town in late 2022, that we had chance to discuss what issues were important. The drainage on the service road by the hotel was one of these issues. As you will all agree, the subsequent work carried out seems to have addressed the issue without the township streetscape losing its country town feel.
Whilst these works were carried out, the uneven surface around the Highway Gazebo was also leveled. We had flagged this as a safety issue with council.
Other issues that were raised at these meetings were the dangerous overgrown garden bed on the corner of the Hamilton Highway and the Inverleigh-Winchelsea roads. These beds were removed by the council, creating safer vision for traffic.
We look forward to the continuation of these meetings, enabling us to present issues as they arise, that are important to the Inverleigh Community.
As you will have all observed, the Youth Precinct has been taking shape quite rapidly. IPA is pleased to have been able to contribute a substantial amount of funds for the concrete pathway that will link the play spaces together and enable all ability access.
Once the Youth Precinct has been completed, bike racks will be added, including bike racks at other locations in town.
During the year IPA has also sent support letters for various local groups as part of the group’s applications for grants.
After the success of last year’s event, we have also committed up to $1,500.0 towards the next ZINEverleigh to be held in July 2024.
A very big thanks to Peter Trevaskis for his commitment as Editor of the Leigh News. This publication is always sought after at the beginning of each month, both online and hard copy. Yet another very successful year for the Leigh News and its readers.
Thank you to Murray McMillan, who has taken over the Keys for the Pump shed and to Ewan Peel for being there if the pump needs attention at any time.
I would like to give a very special thank you to Damian Baker on behalf of the IPA and residents of the Inverleigh community. As some of you will know, for many years, Damian has mowed and maintained the North side of the river, attending to any issues that need to be addressed. So many residents enjoy this area, some probably without realising that a volunteer has been responsible for its upkeep and in turn their enjoyment of this space. Sadley, Damian is leaving our community, he will be greatly missed by those of us that know him, so again thank you for giving so much of your time to the Community of Inverleigh, we wish you well with your new chapter of your life.
Many thanks also to Luanne Thornton who has once again stepped back into the shoes of Secretary, to Vice President Deb Morrison and to Tony Wayer. It makes a huge difference when surrounded by good people.
My thanks also to all IPA members, your support guarantees the ongoing work of the IPA.
Hilary Hamilton President IPA.
P.S.
To Community members, next time you see our banner out locally, come over and have a chat, we would love to tell you more.

I recently attended the Recovery to Resiliance Workshop conducted by Golden Plains Shire. It was a very good workshop challenging us all with how we would respond when confronted with a major event, such as the Flooding we experienced in October 2022. It also prompted us all to react when challenged with all sorts of emergencies.
A Family and Household Emergency Plan Brochure has been included in this months Leigh News and I encourage all families and households to pull out this document and complete it and keep it in a safe and accessible place, ready for you when an emergency comes along. Keep it with other important equipment and documents, ready for you when you need it.

July 2024 Calendar - Berthon
Park Estate
The photos in the Inverleigh Historical Society’s 2024 calendar for July are of Berthon Park Estate. Berthon Park Estate is named after Major Henry Berthon, who purchased an outstation of the Golf Hill Run in Inverleigh in1856. He named his new home ‘Lullote’.
Henry Berthon was the second of the nine children of Benjamin de Crillon Berthon and Rebecca Salisbury. The others were Charles, Henry, Edward, Benjamin, Maria, Emma, William, Mary and John. Ben de Crillon Berthon was part of Berthon Brothers, East India Merchants. Financial downturns, thought in part to be due to ships lost at sea, led to Ben being declared bankrupt in 1831 and the family moving to Hobart, Van Diemen’s Land (Tasmania), in 1832. They joined colonial society. Ben died in 1854 and Rebecca in 1864.

Major Henry Berthon retired from the British Army in1853. He had served in India with the Bombay Engineers and as the Officer in Charge of Convicts at Port Arthur, Van Diemen’s Land. His brother William lived at the Weatherboard Station, number 2 run, Inverleigh, along with his wife Elizabeth (neé Kelly), from 1855. Meanwhile, Mary Moriarty, neé Berthon, had lost her husband, athlete and barrister in law, Sylverius Moriarty, to a football accident in 1848. Mary joined her brother Henry at Inverleigh and helped him plan his house. The stables were built in 1856 and the house shortly after. It was two storeys and made of local brick with walls nearly two feet (60 cm) thick. Henry was appointed a magistrate in the colony of Victoria in 1863. He farmed his 540 acres (216 hectares) until his death in 1884, aged 73.
Mary was left a life interest in Lullote and lived 58 years in the district. She created a riverside garden at Lullote and was a fine needlewoman. She was well respected and loved for her many contributions to the community. She was a benefactor to the St Pauls Anglican Church (donating 1,200 pounds to the Anglican Church as well as furnishings, the bell and an organ), and to the whole town with annual picnics where she supplied the food and prizes for events and invited everyone. Her grandniece, Miss Isobel Willis, helped her in her later years until her death in 1912, aged 93. A stained-glass chancel window was erected to her memory in St Paul’s Church.

James Phillips was the coach driver for Mrs Moriarty. When he married Johanna O’ Reilly in 1870 they moved from Lullote to Clonard, a cottage in Phillips Road, Inverleigh, built by James. Their sons, James and Joseph, purchased Lullote from the estate of H B Berthon in 1913, with the document of title recording the Phillips name in 1920. Joseph and Mary Ada (neé Grist) Phillips lived at Lullote between 1913 and 1920. They moved back to Clonard when James and his new bride, Ellen (neé Molloy) took over at Lullote. Lullote was sold in June 1927 to L. H. Pattinson, who held it until selling it to Andrew J. Keith in July 1934. He sold it to W. H. T. Thornton in 1951. Bill and Vivien Thornton lived on the property until 1986, when they sold it to their second son John, who had been leasing it for the previous few years.
A sub-division of part of the property created Berthon Park Estate, leaving the original Lullote homestead, stables and the remainder in the hands of the Thornton family. The first stage land sales commenced in 2021, with the second stage released in 2022. A third stage is currently being sold. To give an idea of the cost of land in Berthon Park Estate, a 4,500 m2 residential block sold for $565,000 in August 2023. Wooden sculptures are a feature of the estate.

INVERLEIGH BOOK BAZAAR: WRAP UP
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!
The amount of books donated for the 2024 Book Bazaar was amazing and we couldn’t have held it without all these generous donations from the community.
The enthusiastic community volunteers and committee members who responded to the calls of help needed to setup the event was very much appreciated. It made the intensive work load a lot easier for organisers leading up to Saturday May 25th along with packing up the next day!

And of course many thanks goes to everyone that supported the event in buying books on the day. We had sales of $5100 but with costs associated with running the event, a profit of $4000 was made. This will be put towards the construction of a shed in the backyard if we are successful in receiving a grant from the Victorian State Government “Tiny Towns” grants. Happy reading!

What makes a Resilient Community?
Earlier this month the Golden Plains Shire held a public meeting at the hall to discuss the process of recovery in the Inverleigh township after the floods 18 months ago. It covered mainly flood issues and some of the concerns that had come out of the flooding and how emergency events might be handled in the future.
One of the key words used was “ Resilience” So what does it mean and how does it apply to our situation?
My dictionary describes “ Resilience” as Elastic or Springing back. Within our community the word is used to describe how we have recovered and bounced back from an emergency event.
So does resilience just happen or is it a thing that can be managed, encouraged and measured?
In reality it is probably some of all of these things, and so the shire have set about trying to create a more resilient community for when a future event will occur as no doubt it will. Part of this program involves some forward planning on both personal and community levels and I will cover the personal planning in this article.
The shire have released a planning booklet and a checklist to help with planning, when threatened by an emergency. I believe they will be included with rate notices and also made available to local organisations and also upon request. The booklet is flood focused and good information about preparation and planning for floods.
Scouts, Venturers, Rovers and Adult Leaders from 1st Bannockburn are set to attend the 26th Australian Jamboree in Maryborough Queensland in January next year and are fundraising to help offset the fees.
A Jamboree is a once in a lifetime event for a Scout. Held every 4 years, Scouts spend 10 days doing awesome activities, experiencing new challenges and making friends for life.
Our fundraising activities to date include holding BBQ’s at community events, raffles, and selling Cadbury chocolate boxes, hot cross buns, socks, and donations via the Container Deposit Scheme. Other fundraising events which will begin soon are a battery and scrap metal drive.
The group is planning to hold a trivia night
The check list is more interactive and has areas to fill out and complete so the information you are likely to need is quickly and easily accessible. I have written in the past about fire plans and this is a variation of a fire plan. Everybody has different approaches to fire or emergency plans and it could be from just having a chat or a think about it, to a more detailed one, such as this check list. I would strongly encourage you all to complete this check list as it covers a lot of things you might not think of and when an emergency happens there is rarely time to gather and sort this type of information.
As fire fighters during summer events we constantly see people rushing around gathering prized possessions, getting flustered, making mistakes and getting stressed because the emergency happens quickly and they don’t have time to prepare properly. The check list will help make this easier.
Having this information prepared and ready to go will make any decisions made under the pressure of an emergency a lot easier and quicker therefore reducing the risk to you, your family, pets and property. Even share it with others who might be part of your plan so they know what you might be going to do when an emergency happens. You will find a copy of the Checklist in the centre pages of this edition of Leigh News, so there are no excuses for not doing it.

Golden Pens - Write side up
G’Day from the penners for July. We hope you are all keeping warm and snug.
This month’s poetry comes from myself, written way back in 2016, only about 18 months after I had joined the writing group. I was full of optimism at that time about my ability to write and I wrote a lot of nonsensical poems. Honing my skills I expect. This one is about chillies and my distaste for them, I am one of only a few it seems who don’t like them, luckily, I don’t live in Asia!
As always, we would love to hear any feedback you have via our email goldenpens4@ gmail.com and we hope you enjoy this little ditty. Cheers, Wendy.
Ode to Non-Chilli Eaters
I hate chilli’s
I so hate chilli’s
I really hate chilli’s
They give me the willy’s
Why can’t food
Just be full of taste
Why does it have to
Burn off your face
Why can’t my dinner
Be flavourful and nice
Ban the bloody chilli
That’s my advice
Herbs and spices
Can taste, oh, so good
But No, we have to Burn off the roof
Of our mouths so tender
And our lips so sweet
Oh, please let me render
The chilli obsolete
I hate chilli’s
Red, green or black
I hate chilli’s
Send them all back
To where ever they came from, to whence they belong
A land without chilli
That’s where I want to come from I hate chilli’s
I so hate chilli’s
I really hate chilli’s
They give me the willy’s.

POLICE REPORT FOR JULY 2024
Hello all,
Unfortunately my police chaplain and local resident Liz BUFTON passed away recently. Liz had served with the Police chaplaincy unit for the past 12 years and often visited the Police members stationed at Meredith, Bannockburn and Inverleigh. I personally had many conversations with her about police work, local issues and even topics like the station vegetable garden. Many people might not realise but Police attend a lot of jobs involving deceased persons. Sometimes it may be as a result of work incidents, crime, collisions, suicides, medical episodes, unexpected deaths or even natural causes and our role can either be a short one in the case where a doctor issues a natural causes certificate or a long one where death is unexpected or a workplace occurrence or as a result of a crime or collision where very detailed investigations and scene analysis is required. Having a Police chaplain to talk to on occasions can be very supportive. Sometimes Liz had trouble locating me as I am often out on the road but she always persisted and managed to eventually track me down for a catch up and often had a hamper at Christmas and Easter times. She will be missed. Rest in Peace Liz.
Unfortunately there has been a recent Burglary & theft at the Inverleigh football club and several businesses in Bannockburn which occurred on the same night and are believed to be linked. The cash register till was taken and subsequently dumped off Winchelsea Road. If anyone has any infor-
mation about the Burglary please contact the Police station or crime stoppers on 1800 333 000.
There have been some recent issues with fireworks being set off in Peel Road which can upset local horses. Fireworks are illegal and can cause injury and agitate horses, dogs and other animals and can cause them to run and flee properties. Please think of others and don’t use them.
I have had some recent issues with youths opening up sections of work fencing around the new skate park/pump course and using the area which is an active work site and still under construction. The workers have found youths using tools to remove mounting brackets to get in. Please tell your children who may be undertaking this behaviour to stay out. You wouldn’t permit your children into a multi-level building construction site and this should not be treated any differently. I had to tell off approximately 6 children and two adults in the site the other weekend and a while after I closed off the gaps someone had opened them again to access the area. The workers don’t want anyone in there so stay out!!!. Please note that Faulkner Road has recently been sign posted as a 50 km/h speed zone and there are signs at either end and another set in the middle. Please obey the speed limit especially around the school bus drop off/pick up times.
Keep Safe Chris

Golden Plains Shire Council Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham joined Member for Eureka Michaela Settle MP to officially open the new undercover arena at Leighdale Equestrian Centre in Teesdale on the 12th June.
The 70m x 30m undercover arena project has included an undercover shelter, full lighting, water tanks, storm water drainage, spectator seating and a high quality, self-irrigating arena surface. This facility will provide the Committee of Management and clubs at Leighdale Equestrian Centre with an all-weather equestrian training and competition standard arena.
Cr Cunningham said the project had been a collaborative effort between the State Government, Council and the Committee of Management and participating clubs.

Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve
Possibly Australia’s cutest bird!
Writers of bird Field Guides are usually scrupulous about using non-emotive, factual language when describing birds. You certainly won’t find the word ‘cute’. But this is unfortunate, as we have in the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve a bird that ticks all the ‘cuteness’ boxes - the Australian Owlet Nightjar.
Owlet Nightjars are not owls, nor are they nightjars, another nocturnal bird. They are tiny and weigh about the same as a slice of bread. There are ten species of Owlet Nightjar in the world, most in PNG, SE Asia and New Caledonia, with just the one, the Australian found here. Their ‘cuteness’ comes from the round face and forward facing eyes, making them look somewhat like a Sugar Glider. They spend the day in a tree hollow but if you are lucky enough to find an eastern-facing hollow on a sunny morning, you may see one warming itself and calmly surveying the world, including you!
Although not often seen, they are widely distributed throughout Australia and are possibly the most abundant night bird we have. They have a

very distinctive call. Once learned, you may find that there are Australian Owlet Nightjars in your garden. Turn off your music and other sounds and you may be rewarded with their call. There are a number of on-line resources which provide bird calls – xeno -canto is an excellent one.

July is National Desexing Month! Once again we are offering 20% off all desexing procedures.
Desexing your pet helps to reduce the number unwanted pets. Many cats and dogs are bred by accident because they haven't been desexed.
Other than unwanted pregnancies desexing also provides many benefits for you and your pet.
The benefits include:

Prevents reproductive cycle behaviours. Male dogs and cats are much more likely to roam. Female dogs and cats go on heat which involves a bloody discharge in dogs and poses problems such as calling and roaming in queens.
Desexing limits spraying and marking their territory.
Desexed animals are less likely to show aggressive behaviour than undesexed animals.
There are a number of health problems that can be prevented by desexing including mammary tumours, pyometra, prostate problems and tumours around the anus.
Desexing is a day stay surgery. Please contact the clinic on 03 5281 1221 if you have any questions about desexing your pet or would like to book your pet in for surgery.
Feliway Diffuser and Spray
Feliway products are scientifically proven to help reduce anxiety in cats.
Cats can get anxious for many reasons and can show their anxiety through very obvious signs but sometimes it can be more discreet.
Obvious signs may include scratching, urine marking or aggression towards other pets while discreet signs include lack of or over grooming, change in food intake, hiding or appearing withdrawn, not using the litter tray or decreased level of activity.

Interesting Animal Facts
1.Elephants can be right or left trunked. Just like we might be right or left handed, elephants prefer to use one side of their trunk. They start to develop this preference when they are 3 months old.
2. A Group Of Cats Is Called A ‘Clowder’
A group of two or more cats is known as a “clowder.” A group of cats can also be called a clutter or a glaring.
3. Killer Whales Are Dolphins.
Killer whales or Orcas are actually dolphins and part of the toothed whale suborder. All dolphins are whales, but not all whales are dolphins like killer whales are.
4. Cats Can Taste The Air.
That lip curl cats make after sniffing something is called the flehmen response. They use their tongue to trap the pheromones above the roof of their mouth to process them.
5. Dogs Have Three Eyelids
The third eyelid is back in the eye’s inner corner but covers its surface during sleep. This third eyelid is used for making tears and wiping away debris.
How Feliway Works
Cats naturally rub their faces on familar objects in their territory, depositing pheromones from their cheek gland. Feliway mimics this because it contains a synthetic version of feline facial pheromone. It offers a natural way to help prevent or control anxiety related behaviours because cats feel that they are in a safe and familar enviroment.
The diffuser is plugged into a socket in the room most used by the cats or in an area where the inappropriate behaviour is happening. It lasts 4 weeks and is left on continuously. To support the diffuser you can use the Feliway spray on objects around the house or the cat carrier before use.
We have the Feliway Diffuser, Refills and Feliway Spray available at the clinic.
If you would like to book a consultation for any concerns you may have please contact the clinic on 52811221.

Supporting healthcare in regional communities
I’m proud to be part of a government that is committed to improving the health outcomes of Australians living in regional, rural, and remote areas. We recognise that by strengthening Medicare, we can support more people across our regions to get the care they need and deserve. Our government's ongoing commitment to improving access to health care across Australia is reflected in our 2024-25 budget, which provides $2.8 billion to further strengthen Medicare. This is in addition to the historic $6.1 billion investment in Medicare in the 2023-24 budget.
The 2023-24 budget took the first steps in supporting our highly trained health workforce. This included several new incentives and additional payments to promote and secure more doctors in rural communities. We are already seeing the benefits of this investment, with a significant increase in junior doctors starting as GP trainees this year alone as well as an oversubscribed rural generalist training scheme to build our rural workforce. The extra GP tr Envelope completed: Trevaskis, P - AustralianSuper Fee Form 2025FY aining places will see more doctors living, working, and training outside our major cities while providing care to people in our regions. Our government will continue to build on this progress.

A History & plans of Bannockburn Surgery
Principal GPs, Dr Cameron Profitt commenced in 1991. With Dr John Henderson joining the practice in 2006 and Dr Ben Fry following suit in 2012. The practice has since grown from strength to strength and has a wonderfully dedicated team of Doctors, Nurses, Reception staff and Practice Manager. They also have access to high-quality Allied Health Practitioners with plans for more services to come.
Bannockburn Surgery has been fortunate to have additional GP Registrars join our team expanding our provision of service even further. This means they are lucky to be in the position to have capacity to offer more appointments including on the day appointments.
