The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001.

Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.

Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to GS Nmaterial.

Hello again to you all. I hope you will enjoy reading this edition of our local newletter. There is a new feature this month, with a monthly Film Review

by Alex Erwin on Page 7. I know you will enjoy this addition and please forward your suggestions direct to Alex or to me for future months.

We have made it safely this far through to Covid 19 Pandemic and things will slowly return to something like normal eventually, although I doubt we will never return back to life as it was before.

The New Real Estate Office in Inverleigh is now open and the New Chemist will be opening sometime in June also. I believe Golfers are able to get back onto the fairways, bowlers can begin practice again for the new season and I could see the lights on the Footy Oval tonight too, for practice. I hope the Girls can get onto the new Netball courts soon too.

SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL Welcome to term two! What a different term it has been.

Remote Learning

Our students have had the option of learning online or via hard copies of various workbooks; depending on what would suit each family best. Each week - abiding by strict hygiene and social distancing guidelines - we have had an open morning at the school to offer support and learning materials to parents and students.

Staff are very excited to have students returning to face to face learning.

Cooking

To keep our cooking program going we have offered our students a wide range of recipes from biscuits and scones to sausage rolls and savoury muffins.

New Playground

We have had the soft fall delivered to the school just in time for our first students to return on May 26.

We know the students will love using the new playground and we thank the Bendigo Bank, the Golden Plains Shire, Local Schools Community Fund, staff, friends, and families of Shelford Primary for their support.

Anzac Day

Despite not being able to attend our usual memorial services for Anzac Day our students commemorated the day in their own ways. Which of course included Anzac biscuits and a flag ceremony for some of our families.

Hello all,

I have had some complaints re speeding vehicles in McCallum Road as well as Mahers and Terrier Roads Inverleigh. Residents have expressed concerns as there are quite a few people out walking and children riding bicycles currently with the COVID restrictions. Please be considerate and think of the residents living in the streets you are travelling along.

I see the large burnout has occurred in the main street of the Inverleigh township apparently on Monday the 11th May. I have a witness that saw a Gold Coloured utility doing the burnout and I am seeking anyone

else that may have seen or filmed this occurring.

I have also had a white Holden utility and a Black Holden utility travelling through town at excessive speeds during the night in the last few weeks. I clocked the White Utility doing 166 km/h in the 60 km/h zone through the Inverleigh township and got some footage of the rear of it showing a large sticker in the rear window and I am currently having the footage enhanced to try to identify the registration number. If anyone knows of these incidents or again has registration numbers or video of them driving dangerously I would be very interested.

I understand there

have been some rumours of the me being transferred to Meredith going around. These are not true, I have been doing some enforcement in the Bannockburn, Lethbridge and Meredith areas especially the Meredith school crossing due to some complaints but I remain the Inverleigh Police officer. A member from the Bannockburn Police station is currently working at the Meredith Police station while the Meredith member is off on leave. Do not believe everything you hear unless the person concerned tells you.

The Lion King Review

The Lion King (1994) is my favourite film from the Disney Renaissance. These films include Hercules and The Little Mermaid. For context, this film is quite similar to Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

Firstly, the voice acting. James Earl Jones as Mufasa was cast quite well. The clouds scene is iconic because of his amazing booming voice. Jeremy Irons plays Scar really well. I could not think of a better voice actor for the role. However, I think that Matthew Broderick sounds too juvenile to play Simba. Especially when compared to the voices of Jones and Irons.

Elton John and Tim Rice made this films music great. The Circle of Life is so well composed. I think it was better than Can You Feel The Love Tonight. John and Rice were very deserving of that Oscar.

The writing is also great. Scar is possibly the most compelling Disney villain. Past and future villains felt one dimensional but Scar actually achieves his goal. This also makes his comeuppance so rewarding.

The scenery is also iconic. The animation in the opening is amazing animation. As well as the stampede, which is one of the first examples of CGI.

I loved this film. It is a timeless masterpiece. I highly recommend it for all ages although the younger ones will need parents by their side for this one. A definite must watch.

Tracking Dog Trials

I was introduced to tracking about 20 years ago.

A friend suggested to me that our Staffordshire Bull Terrier would be good at tracking. I had no idea what it entailed or what procedure to follow but this friend gave me a few pointers and then we were on our own. Tracking as a dog sport involves another person laying a track and following a map over various terrain and depending on the level the dog is at – what distance, how many turns and how many articles they need to find.

These are our tracking flags.

The dogs are required to follow the scent of a person who is given a map to follow and as they walk they remove the flags so there is not a visible track left.

Our tracks start at 400 meters with 2 x 90 degree turns and one article and go through to Test 8 which is 1200 meters with 6 turns, two being acute and 3 articles.

The aging time varies from 20 minutes for a Test 1 up to 3 hours for a Test 8. All our tracks have a start flag and an article left by the tracklayer.

The higher tracks also have a different person go out at

a later time than the original tracklayer and cross the track at two different places.

We have all types of dogs tracking. Most people, when thinking of a tracking dog envisage a German Shepherd, Beagle or a Bloodhound but that is not the case. We have very successful dogs of all breeds ranging from Papillons, Corgis and Whippets to Labradors, Border Collies and everything in between. We have many crossbreds tracking as well.

The Tracking Club of Victoria hold a trial in Inverleigh every August and over 3 days have in excess of a hundred entries. A trial of

Leigh News 9 any size requires an enormous amount of work. The bigger trials usually have three to four judges. Each judge needs a Steward and several tracklayers so helpers are in big demand.

Land is our other issue and we have been very lucky in Inverleigh that many land owners have been exceedingly generous in letting us use their land and we are extremely grateful.

Our tracks are only used once a day so a large amount of land is required.

We also participate in Track and Search tracking which consists of tracking on hard surfaces and in populated areas around suburban streets.

ponents where the tracklayer lays part of the track on foot and then gets into a vehicle for 200 meters and then completes the tracklaying on foot. These trials require even more helpers due to the complexity of the tracks.

The dogs are graded on the tracks they do. Gradings go from a pass through several levels to an Excellent. I have tracked 5 Staffords now with all of them bar one being fabulous tracking dogs. Our current young dog appears to consider tracking beneath her dignity. The four other dogs have all mainly been awarded with Excellent gradings and along the way we have been awarded Two Tracking Dog of the Year awards and two Track

and Search Dog of the Year Awards. Our two older dogs we have now are both Grand Champion Track and Search Dogs.

Tracking is a lot of fun and a Winter sport. Our dogs are tracked in harnesses and a 10 meter lead. We don’t track in Summer due to the snake issue. If anyone is interested and you see the flags out please come and see us. You are welcome to follow a dog and see what it is all about.

After about my first 10 years I was enthused enough to become a judge. In the course of a judging weekend at a bust trial we can walk up to 100 klms over the 4 days.

At the time of writing, there are talks that lockdown restrictions may be eased soon. That's all golfers needed to hear as we anticipate a return to our favourite pastime. I'm sure clubs are being dusted off and polished to a high shine in readiness.

During the downtime, some of us have set up homemade nets to try to maintain our swing in our backyards. It turns out an old sheet is not strong enough to withstand a crisp 7 iron, just ask the neighbours.

Even with a net, you can't replicate real course conditions so trust me, keep an eye open as there will be golfers on course with rustier swings than the gate in the back paddock. The first competition scores will be irrelevant. It's the camaraderie that will be embraced. I can hear the usual comments on the fairways now, "how are you hitting them?" "Wide and often", will come the reply. Or when the young gun in the group bombs a drive up the middle, an old fellow will surely say "i don't go that far on holiday".

When the go ahead is given, there will be precautions that mean minor changes to the game.

Flagsticks will remain in the hole, group sizes will be limited and it's likely a player will have to score their own card. If this is the case, keep a close eye on your playing partners as the old saying, golf is won with penmanship, is never more likely.

While many of us have been waiting for the courses to reopen, our local courses have been maintained and improved by a dedicated group of volunteers. A way to show appreciation for their efforts and help the clubs through a difficult financial time would be, once restrictions are lifted, to go and play a round.

The green fees are cheap and the members are welcoming.

Stay safe and I'll leave you with the best technical advice I've received on course after topping a shot and watching it dribble down the fairway. "you're standing too close to the ball...............after you've hit it."

CFA MESSAGE FOR THIS MONTH

It’s been a remarkably quiet time in the village! Our physical distancing and social isolation have certainly changed the way things are being done and this also applies to the CFA.

Most importantly however, the CFA will still always respond to emergency calls.

As many will have heard, the siren continues to be tested each Monday evening at 7.30 and the trucks are also taken out each Monday to check all their systems to ensure absolute readiness. However, the following processes which are now in place include: *All station activities are to cease and entrance to the station is limited to absolutely necessary circumstances e.g. Maintenance, replacement and restocking of equipment, drivers’ roster, etc.

*Our Sunday schedule for tanker or portable radio checks have been replaced with alternative checks, thereby stopping the gathering of members that took place on a Sunday.

*The Monday evening drivers roster now only has the rostered

drivers and officer in charge attending.

* Hygiene cards are now in each tanker and when an activity is completed, finished the radio handpiece, steering wheel, gear stick, etc must be wiped down with wipes that are provided. *Hand sanitizing is required when members enter or leave the station and the station door handles, light switches taps etc are also to be wiped before leaving the station.

The above measures in no way impede our operational capacity, but they’re designed to ensure that we achieve an optimum level of protection, both for members and the community.

The Fire Danger Period is now ended but precautions still need to be taken. If you’re intending to burn your garden clippings, leaves, or whatever, please take time to register you burn off. It’s very simple, just ring 1800668511 and this makes sure that the CFA knows and won’t dispatch a truck that isn’t needed!

Also, please check the fire danger

rating before you burn. If the rating is Low to Moderate (check the CFA website if necessary) there should be no problems.

Even so, make sure you’ve got clear ground around the burn and an adult is with the burn at all times with the means to put the fire out, if necessary. When the burn off is finished, please make sure that the fire is completely extinguished. Inverleigh is a small community, so it’s recommended that you notify your neighbours before you burn off and of equal importance, make sure you're not burning prohibited materials such as chemicals, rubber, plastics, paint, etc. You might be dropped off the Christmas Card List if you do!

Stay safe and warm, and continue with the behaviour that’s been exercised over the last several months to ensure everyone’s well-being.

FEDERAL MEMBER LIBBY COKER TO TAKE PART IN VINNIE'S CEO SLEEPOUT

Federal Member for Corangamite Libby Coker will this year take part in the Vinnie’s CEO Sleepout to raise funds to help break the cycle of homelessness experienced by hundreds of thousands of Australians.

Libby Coker said the impact of COVID-19 has led to an increase in demand on support services across the region.

“There are many people in our region who are doing in tough and the pandemic has led to greater need as a result of people losing their job or experiencing a reduction in their income,” Ms Coker said.

“I am looking forward to participating in this year’s CEO Sleepout in order to raise awareness of the challenges being faced by people experiencing homelessness, and raise much needed funds for frontline services.”

The CEO Sleepout began in Sydney in 2006. Since then, it has expanded to cities across Australia. This year is the third time the event has taken place in Geelong.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s Sleepout will take place online, with participants are sleeping on their couches, in their backyards or in their cars.

Ms Coker acknowledge the work of the staff and volunteers at the St St Vincent de Paul Society.

“It is heartening that there are so many people putting their hand up to provide essential support to those in need, especially when many of them are doing it tough themselves.”

The CEO Sleepout will take place on 18 June 2020.

FROM THE MAYOR’S DESK – JUNE 2020 There’s no doubt, it’s a tough time for many people and it’s heartening to see our communities embody the very best of what we love about living here in Golden Plains Shire.

At the end of May, Council and the community celebrated National Volunteer Week. While COVID-19 restrictions prevented us from marking the occasion in person, Council acknowledged the outstanding contributions of its volunteers online throughout the week. We were also thrilled to hear that Bannockburn local Scott Cooper was named a National Ambassador for his outstanding volunteer commitment.

The theme for Volunteer Week 2020 was Changing Communities, Changing Lives, in recognition that volunteering has an impact on the entire community, and not just individuals. From volunteers running grassroots sports clubs to those who provide important services to the elderly and vulnerable, volunteering is part of the fabric which holds our communities together.

With COVID-19 disrupting everyday life, volunteering has never been more important than now.

Council’s 179 volunteers assist with providing some of Council’s most vital services, such as delivered meals, social support groups for the elderly or those with disabilities, community transport and community planning.

Whether you volunteer with Council, your local church or sporting group, thank you for the invaluable contribution you make to making Golden Plains Shire an even better place to live.

COVID-19: COUNCIL UPDATE

CHANGE TO COUNCIL MEETINGS

Due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Golden Plains Shire Council has implemented a number of changes to its operations to reduce the risks to residents, staff and volunteers.

To allow for greater social distancing, all Ordinary Meetings of Council will be held in the new Council Chamber at the Golden Plains Civic Centre, Pope Street, Bannockburn, until further notice.

As we begin to welcome all students back to school, we’d like to thank and commend our staff, students and parents for their dedication, commitment and patience during the past few weeks of remote learning. Readjusting to another routine for the remaining weeks of term is no small feat but again, we have full confidence in how our teachers will prepare to ensure the best learning opportunities occur for students.

‘Whole School Sleep Out’

To break up the week and offer students some reprieve from remote learning, last month our teaching team created the ‘Whole School Sleep Out’. Students were encouraged to set up camp in the backyard or inside and join in with a number of Facebook live activities. These included camp fire cooking (of note Mr Irwin’s s’mores); outdoor science with Mrs Mac which included a coloured volcano; Miss Child’s whip cracking and horsemanship demonstration on Piper and Nugget; and a bed time story. Students and their families thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

The ‘Teesdale Show’

Our first ever digital show provided students with a day of fun where learning was dedicated to students creating a masterpiece or demonstrating a talent they are proud of and sharing it with others, just like a good Country Show! Categories included ‘The Arts’, ‘Gardening’, ‘Construction’, ‘Cooking’, ‘Animals’ and ‘Domestic Duty’!

The variety of talent was incredible. Entries included paintings, knitting, crotchet, making a lava lamp, Lego masterpieces, an icy pole stick farmhouse, vegetable gardens, show stopping cakes and baked goods, horse riding demonstrations, a working dog in action and yabby races!

All entries were uploaded to a digital platform for all families to view. It certainly was an enjoyable day and students are to be commended for their effort and imagination that went into creating their entries.

With an abundance of figs and quinces, we will take some time to poach these to create some delicious sweet dishes. It was fantastic to see so many entries in the cooking category of the ‘Teesdale Show’, as well as students planting out vegetable seedlings in their gardens at home. Great to see so many students using their cooking and gardening skills at home.

Dear Sebastian has been a long term patient of ours.

We were first introduced to him over 10 years ago when he needed his second puppy vaccination! His mum has always been attentive to his health care needs and he has certainly been a regular visitor in his senior years, ensuring he is kept healthy and comfortable.

Recently Sebastian had taken a bit of a liking towards his mum's handkerchiefs, with his mum finding one ripped up and another that came out in his poop.

After that, all handkerchiefs were strictly accounted for and stored safely out of reach so Sebastian couldn't get to them again. Or so we thought.

Sebastian's recent fettish for handkerchiefs was mentioned in a consult at his regular senior health check. He was happily taking treats, not painful when his belly was palpated and not showing any abnormalities so apart from advice on signs to watch out for, he went off home as usual.

A few days later, however, Sebastian's worried mum called as he had vomited his breakfast that day and wasn't interested in eating, which was very unlike the food driven guy! What was also alarming was his mum had found part of a large handkerchief, but she could not find the rest of it, so of course it was feared Sebastian had swallowed the handkerchief on the sly, and now it was causing a BIG problem.....

Sebastian was checked over by Dr. Peter and it was noted he definitely wasn't his normal self. His tail was still wagging and he was happy to see us, but wasn't quite his enthusiastic self. On palpation he was a little tender in his mid abdomen and it was decided to take x-rays.

X-rays are a fantastic diagnostic tool for assessing the abdomen. We can often see the location and size of organs and in the case of foreign bodies we can clearly identify them. In the case of fabrics we can use clues, such as gas building up or a clumping look to the intestines which can indicate the presence of something that doesn't belong.

In Sebastians case it was the latter, with some suspicious looking contents in his intestinal tract, gassy intestines and of course, the knowledge of the missing handkerchief.

DOUBLE CELEBRATION FOR INVERLEIGH

Congratulations go to local resident Fiona McIntyre on being awarded the prestigious Lady of Racing for 2020. Fortunately the award ceremony was early in March , pre lockdown, and Fiona was recognised for her tireless and successful work in re-training and re-housing former racehorses. The award celebrates women who have made an outstanding contribution to the thoroughbred industry.

Taking a retired racehorse and retraining it for pleasure riding or show performance, has been a lifelong passion for Fiona. After a spell in a paddock, and change of diet for a horse, she takes about six weeks to teach a new horse the basics of going calm and soft rather than racing mode.
