The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Friday 20 May, 2022
NEW SYSTEMS FOR FACILITIES AND GRANTS Golden Plains Shire Council is making it easier for residents to access community facilities and find funding opportunities, with the implementation of new online booking and grant finder systems. A key objective of the Council Plan 2021-2025, the implementation of the SpacetoCo online booking system will make it easier for community members to book Council-managed community facilities. With a streamlined booking process and browsable facility library, the SpacetoCo system provides residents with better access to local community spaces. The new system makes it easier for all community members to browse and book community facilities and aligns with Council’s commitment to activating community spaces and encouraging local participation. Community members wanting to make a booking for a Council-managed facility or browse available spaces can visit goldenplains.vic.gov.au/community-facilities. For more information on community facilities, contact communityfacilities@gplains.vic.gov.au or call 5220 7111. Council has also partnered with Grant Guru to make it simpler for local community groups, businesses and individuals to find funding opportunities. The platform provides a comprehensive list of grant and funding opportunities currently available, with search and filter features that make it quick and easy for residents to find and apply for grants that meet their specific funding needs. The platform can be tailored to meet the needs of community members, with email alerts for relevant new grants and the ability to save grants or streams to their favourites. It also provides users with tips to improve their grant applications and increase their success rate. Community members can access Grant Guru by visiting: goldenplains.vic.gov.au/grants. For support in utilising Grant Guru, community members can contact Council’s Community Development team at enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au or 5221 7111. Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble encouraged residents to give the new platforms a try. “Council is pleased to be delivering another key objective of the Council Plan 2021-2025 with the implementation of SpacetoCo for our community facilities. This new system will make it quicker and easier for all community members to book our facilities, keeping them active and accessible for everyone. “Council is committed to supporting local community groups, businesses and residents to access the broad range of funding opportunities available to them. The implementation of Grant Guru complements Council’s Community Strengthening Grants program by providing easy access to additional external funding opportunities that meet the specific needs of Golden Plains residents. “It’s great to see these new platforms and systems being utilised to improve Council processes and support our residents to access the facilities and services they need. Council Officers will, of course, still be available to assist residents in accessing facilities and grants, and to help community groups in navigating these new systems.”

June 2022 Calendar THE LEIGH-BARWON RIVER JUNCTION
This photo, taken by Bronwyn Price, is from the 2022 Inverleigh Historical Society calendar, for the month of June. ‘Inver’ usually means ‘river mouth or confluence,’ thus Inverleigh is where the Leigh River merges with the Barwon River, just 900 metres south of the highway bridge, or 1.4 km via the delightful walking track that follows the west side of the river. The Leigh River originates east of Ballarat, and it is named the Yarrowee River for the first half of its length. Water flow in the river is supplemented by the outflow of the Ballarat South Wastewater Treatment Plant, with much of this water having originated in the Moorabool River system. This makes the water high in phosphorus, but not so much that wildlife is deterred. Platypuses and tortoises are regularly seen in both the Leigh and Barwon Rivers and fish species include brown trout, perch, blackfish, tench, redfin, short-finned eels and carp. The Leigh River flows through some spectacular and beautiful gorges, which are mostly in locations that are difficult to access. The Barwon River originates in the Otways. It takes an unusual set of rainfall events to create a flood at Inverleigh. Heavy rain in the Otways has to occur prior to heavy rain in the Leigh catchment in Central Victoria, in order for the peak river flows from the two rivers to coincide at Inverleigh. The last major flood was in November 1978, when houses in High Street were flooded and water entered the school building. In 1952 the Leigh River flooded three times in three months! A minor flood in November 1995 resulted in several roads around Inverleigh being cut and the school children being sent home early.
Leigh News 11
At the confluence of the two rivers the water has a depth of up to six metres and the flow from both directions is normally slow and unobservable. This is because the water is held back by a rock barrier across the Barwon a little over a kilometre to the east of the confluence. This wall is a natural feature, which was further built upon to create a weir, once part of a system to power the Carrah Flour Mill, built by Dr. R.C. Hope, which operated beside the north bank of the Barwon River from about 1857 to the 1890s. A race of more than a mile in length was constructed, which is no longer visible, but would have been similar to the water race that can still be seen at the Fyansford paper mill site. In December 1907, a 77-year-old local resident, Mr Joseph Allen, drowned at the confluence while trying to retrieve a duck that he had shot. Over the past thirty years, many trees have been planted along the river reserve. This environment is home to some rarely seen native animals, including bats, boobook owls, tawny frogmouths, ring-tailed possums and sugar gliders. The Shire maintains the tracks, controls weeds and grass and restricts vehicle access. At the water’s edge at the confluence is a timber deck, which is often used by fishers and by people who enjoy quietly contemplating a beautiful scene. Written by Keith Windle The Inverleigh Historical Society meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month, at the Inverleigh Public Hall, 2-4 pm. New members are very welcome. GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Thursday 5 May, 2022
ONLINE EDIBLE GARDENS PROGRAM RETURNS Following successful webinar series in August and November last year, Golden Plains Shire Council’s popular Edible Gardens program will return with a new, free webinar series this month. Part of the Golden Plains Shire Council Golden Growers initiative, the series will feature three workshops about how to create a sustainable edible garden at home that will provide fresh home-grown produce, without the use of chemicals. The webinars will explore how gardeners can make their garden more environmentally friendly and the impacts of soil and fertilisers on health and the environment, while also preparing gardeners to plant the perfect Golden Plains winter garden. The third session will include a question-and-answer session with series host and qualified horticulturist Craig Castree. With more than 45 years’ experience in crafting his own organic foods at home, Craig provides practical, easy and affordable edible gardening solutions. The Edible Gardens Online Workshops 3.0 webinar series is suitable for beginners, people wanting to improve their gardening skills and gardeners who want to become more environmentally friendly. The Edible Gardens webinars will run from 7 to 8pm, Thursdays on 26 May, 2 and 9 June, 2022. To register, visit goldenplains.vic.gov.au/edible-gardens or email GPSHealthandWellbeing@gplains.vic.gov.au. Attendees of all three sessions in the series will enter the draw to win Craig Castree’s book, Growing and Grafting Fruit Trees for the Aussie Backyard. Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble says the webinar series is a great way for new gardeners to learn more about sustainable gardening practices in Golden Plains Shire. “Council received great feedback from participants following the Edible Gardens webinars last year and it’s great to have Craig Castree returning to the program to share his valuable experience in growing environmentally-friendly edible gardens. “Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener, this is the perfect time to learn how to build an edible garden and grow delicious, healthy produce sustainably and cheaply in your own backyard. The free webinars will help local gardeners continue their edible gardening over the cooler months and prepare for the spring season. I look forward to joining the upcoming sessions as an enthusiastic participant.”

G’day from the penners for June. As the weather cools and the air around our shire becomes fragrant with the smell of wood smoke from all the wood heaters, it’s a timely reminder to be aware of the danger of fires. It’s so easy to just pop out for a minute and leave the fire blazing but all it takes is a minute and your world could be changed forever. We all appreciate the hard work the CFA does but let’s keep the volunteers at home this year. Our group is busy as usual, writing up a storm and our meetings have been lively lately with lots of good stories being written and read. We have adopted a random three subject format for our homework exercises and they are producing some great stories. It can be quite challenging marrying up three completely different things into one story, but we are meeting the challenge with gusto. This month’s poem comes from Wendy who wrote this poem as a group exercise to write a bush poem like Banjo Patterson or Henry Lawson might have. We hope you enjoy her contribution. So, until next month happy reading and writing.
An Aussie Bush Ballad.
The eucalypt leaves sway gently atop the trees so tall and strong The hot north wind blows incessantly as I tramp along The parched brown earth and dust so fine kicks up upon my knees What I wouldn't give right now for a swig of billy tea I trudge my way along the track, blue sky my only friend Hoping to come across a swaggie's camp further up beyond the bend I've not seen a soul since I left stockman's crossing, though the river had ceased to flow My swag was getting heavy now, a camp would be all the go I sing a tune inside my head of a land so true and free A place where you can be a toff or wander just like me Wander short or wander long whatever is your favour You’re sure to meet the nicest folk in your life's labour As the sun dips down behind the mountains I smell a scent on the breeze The unmistakable aroma of a eucalypt billy of tea My step it quickens as I head towards the stand of mallee gum The men all there give a welcome wave in greeting the new chum I state my name and where I'm from and where I may be going Sit down they cried and help yourself to tea there as it's brewing We sit and chat about this land and of how free we are To make our own life come what may to travel near and far
Thanks to: Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
No boss to tell us what to do or where to go each day This wide brown land will always have the last and final say From horizon to horizon from verdant through to bronze From Qld heat to snowy alps this land goes on and on Bury me under a moonlit sky beneath the southern stars that I love Then sing a Requiem for me and I'll thank you from above.

Leigh News 17
POLICE REPORT FOR JUNE 2022 Hello All, I have had some recent instances of noise complaints both in the Inverleigh and Teesdale areas some of which were not even parties just residential music which carries into the neighbour’s house. On some occasions the neighbours have even approached the offending party and have expressed their concerns which have been ignored and then Police are notified. From EPA website: Residential noise enforcement officers from your local council can investigate and decide whether noise is unreasonable. They consider: •volume and intensity •what the noise sounds like – its character •time and place •circumstances •how long the noise continues •how often the noise occurs or whether the noise is unreasonable under the Environment Protection Regulations 2021. Noise can be unreasonable at any time but Prohibited times are listed as: •Musical instruments. •Electrical audio goods, including stereos, radios, TVs and public address systems. Mon to Thur before 7am & after 10 pm. Friday before 7 am & after 11 pm. Sat & public holiday's before 9am & aft 11pm Sunday before 9am and after 10pm. Unfortunately there has been some damage to tree plantings near the lookout and the swinging bridge. Volunteers give up their time and labour to improve various areas in Inverleigh and to have that work destroyed is very disheartening. Youths are getting in the containers/sheds at the back of the sporting club, this on top of the recent damage to the railway building, this behaviour has to stop! Don’t let this be your children! I repeatedly keep saying know what your children are up to! just letting them roam about leads to mischief, and that is what we are seeing around the town in the last couple of years. Involve them in activities and sports and give them
attention and productive things to do. Just because they are off roaming and out of your sight leaving you to do what you want is not helping them grow up into responsible adults. If they are caught/filmed damaging property it can lead to a criminal conviction which can hinder their future job prospects. Some issues have been brought to my attention in relation to spectators at the football matches. If you are considering drinking alcohol at games then the club has the liquor licence and only liquor purchased at the club can be consumed at the ground in the zone allocated in and around the rooms. Liquor is not to be taken onto the ground at all especially during the quarter breaks when the players are being addressed by the coaches. The Great Victorian bicycle ride is currently advertised with an overnight stop in Inverleigh on Saturday the 3rd December so there will be a lot of people around that afternoon and night, please be mindful of the extra riders, traffic on the roads and give the riders sufficient space if passing. There has been some publicity in the Geelong advertiser of a possible music festival up the Hamilton Highway HESSE around the new Year period and I believe plans are currently before council and relevant authorities. If the festival is given the go ahead it will mean a lot more traffic on the roads over that holiday period which is something to be aware of when travelling about the area. Getting some more reports of people on trail bikes riding along the railway line and in the Inverleigh common. Motorcycles are required to be registered and the riders needs to hold a motorcycle licence to ride anywhere on public roads and property. If you do not hold a licence or the bike is unregistered the only place you can ride is private property!!!! Just because you see other people doing it does not make it right. Keep safe Chris

What is My Aged Care & how do I join?
Recently the Golden Plains Shire Council hosted a Volunteers Lunch and Ceremony at the Bannockburn Cultural Centre. There was a good crowd. In excess of 50 people from the Shire in attendance to hear the Award recipients speak on their personal experiences as volunteers in their local communities. Barry Wemyss from Smythesdale spoke of his surprise in receiving such an award, as he did not consider what he did within the community amounted to Volunteering. A local artist and scultor, Barry has under-estimated the effect he has on his local community. Many felt that he was worthy of Citizen of the Year for 2021 and duly nominated him for this award. Alisha Nurnaitis was rewarded for her work with other youth within the shire, emerging as a leader amongst them. She was honoured to receive her award as Junior Citizen of the year 2021 and looks forward to working with and leading the youth of the shire. I also had a chance to speak and wanted to extend the message wider into the community of the importance of registering for "My Aged Care". Important changes are happening right across the country affecting all senior residents 65 years and over, including self funded retiree's. Many in this age bracket do not understand, or have any access to a changing world of technology. For many, the daily paper, a landline phone on the wall and a coloured TV with free to air channels is as good as it gets. My Aged Care is the system whereby the Federal Government is able to distribute funds to the senior citizens throughout the land. This has been running for over 7 years and still many over 65 are not aware of the funds and services available to them. Prior to My Aged Care, federal funds were distributed throughout the community through Councils and Health

organisations, but now, funds are allocated direct to the individual, depending on their needs and care requirements. This does not mean that funds are sent direct to the individual, but rather to a "provider of their choice" to manage and distribute the funds as requested by the individual. Now the system is changing again, with local Shires being relieved of this task and management handed over entirely to private providers. To be part of the system, all residents over 65 years, should register for "My Aged Care" via the phone number or website shown here. You may not feel you are old enough to require this, however, to be "registered" with My Aged Care is important because
it takes "time" to be added to the system. If your health or circumstances change over night, which is a definate possibility, you may need help and/or care. You will be left to your own devises until your registration is completed, which could be 6-8 weeks. So register now and get in the system and be ready for the unexpected. It could save you a lot of time and money. PLEASE, DO IT NOW Peter Trevaskis, President, Inverleigh Senior Citizens. (Refer also to page 19)

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Thursday 26 May, 2022
NEW AGED AND DISABILITY PROVIDERS CONFIRMED The Australian Government has confirmed the new providers of aged and disability services to serve the residents of Golden Plains Shire from 1 July 2022. Council is pleased to welcome Silverchain as the new Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) service provider for Golden Plains Shire. Silverchain is a not-for-profit organisation with more than 125 years’ experience delivering leading aged and health care services in the home with a strong commitment to local, personalised service and to high quality care. Silverchain has an established track record of transitioning services in Victoria and are an experienced, reliable partner to support Council’s transition of CHSP service delivery. Council is also pleased to welcome mecwacare as the new Home and Community Care Program for Younger People (HACCPYP) service provider for Golden Plains Shire. Mecwacare is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation with demonstrated experience delivering HACC PYP services, and the established systems and processes in place to support assessment, intake and service provision. Since 2018, mecwacare have been the provider of HACC PYP services in the Ballarat catchment previously delivered by the City of Ballarat.
Mecwacare has been caring for the community since 1959, providing residential, community and in-home nursing care and support services for people who are aged and people who are living with a disability. The provider supports more than 20,000 people across Victoria through a highly integrated service network operated by more than 2,000 employees and 500 volunteers. Service clients and their families in Golden Plains Shire have been directly informed of the new service providers, as Council management and the Active Ageing & Inclusion team continue to support them through the service transition. All clients will continue to receive the services they are currently provided without interruption, with Council’s delivery to cease on 30 June 2022 and the new providers starting in-home care on 1 July 2022. Beyond the date of service transfer, Council staff will continue to be available to support clients through the transition and will offer dedicated navigation support to existing and new clients of aged and disability services in the Shire. Council management has been supporting affected staff during the transition from the current service delivery, with a range of options including redeployment opportunities and career pathways in the aged and disability care sector. At its meeting on 22 March 2022, Council resolved to transition out of the delivery of aged and disability care, with the services to move to a dedicated sector provider. The Australian Government has sole policy and funding responsibility for the delivery of aged services and has announced a new national system for the sector that will be implemented from 1 July 2023. It is a significant change and Council’s Best Value Review of Aged and Disability Services determined that this new system will negatively impact Council’s commitment to deliver high quality services that provide the best value to the community.

20 Leigh News Chimneys and smoke alarms. Last week the Inverleigh fire brigade had a callout to a chimney fire. Nothing really unusual in that, as we seem to get one or two a year. This one was a bit different in that upon arrival we were told that it had been cleaned and inspected about three weeks before. So this was a bit odd, and after investigating it was clear up the chimney, but you could see faint smoke and it smelt like smoke. It was the smoke that alerted the owner as they had let the fire go out about twelve hours previously. Being an older building and having an open fire place it was easy to have a look in and we discovered that the bricks at the back of the fire place were quite hot and the side ones were cool. So there was definitely heating up the back of the fire place. A bit more investigating we discovered it had originally been a double sided fireplace with a single chimney,
not uncommon in older homes. In this case one side had been blocked off and it was only being used from one side. What seems to have happened is that a lot of soot and other rubbish has fallen into the cavity of the disused fireplace and then caught fire and smouldered without being visible. So we carefully put some water onto as best we could and after two attempts it was extinguished. It is cases like this one where an operational smoke detector is critical and it can warn people nearby of a looming problem. This is practically important at night when people are asleep and may not be aware of a fire developing in their home. So check your smoke detector is working properly and change the battery regularly, a lot of people do it when daylight saving is implemented. It does not matter how you go about it just as long as it works for you and they are working properly. We would also like to thank all the people who supported our BQQ at the election and also participated in the raffle. Ewen Peel
Finding pe ace in disturbing times: A friend of mine tells me I think too much. The nature of my role as a minister of religion is to have a concern for the things that are taking place in the world. It is easy to say, “Why be concerned about the things you can’t do anything about?” I have even heard some people say, “Worry doesn’t add any years to your life.” Is there a difference between concern and worry? What can we do about it? Sometimes something that is concerning me becomes a worry. When I worry I feel physically sick and I can have difficulty going to sleep as I lie awake thinking. Some people lose their appetite; I eat more (and drink more, to be honest). In the past the depth of my worry has developed into mental illness, anxiety and depression, and I took sick leave for 3 months, began medication and received counselling. There are lots of things I imagine we may be concerned about. We may be concerned about climate change. Not concerned so much for ourselves but for our children. We may be concerned about the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the indirect threat of escalation, the connection with increasing food costs, fuel cost, cost of supplies for work, and increasing in mortgage interest rates. When concerns get a little close to home it can become worry and without finding some peace it can become anxiety and depression.
Jesus was recorded as saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.” (John 15:27) We are not to pretend that things do not trouble us. When the ordinariness of life, our freedom is disturbed, our tranquillity is threatened we want a kind of peace that invites us to respond in a way that is not fearful. I find myself thinking worry disables life; however concern inspires potential to change life. We really don’t want to be left in an anaesthetised, deadened, dull life without issues that challenges us. That is not the kind of peace Jesus gives. Rather, his peace is found in overcoming the fear of the issue and doing something in response to it. There are many things in this world that are currently disturbing our tranquillity. We can find peace by allowing them to inspire us into action as individuals or community. If you are experiencing mental distress please call: Lifeline 13 11 14

Roadworks in the Bush Parks Victoria have recently completed repair and improvement works along the Old Teesdale Track in the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve. While it is still a bumpy bush track, a lot of deep holes and muddy patches have been filled and surfaced with gravel. The Old Teesdale Track runs through the Reserve, from the old tip site (beside the Inverleigh golf club entrance) all the way to the north end, where it meets the Teesdale-Inverleigh Road. This track, which was previously quite hazardous to drive on, now provides safe access to the eastern side of the Nature Conservation Reserve. Ms Tamara Karner, a ranger with Parks Victoria told recent meeting of Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve that Rangers intend to ‘ramp up’ enforcement of regulations governing activities within the Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve, with particular focus on the illegal collection of firewood, and off-road cars and motor cycles, which have caused very serious damage in the Reserve. The current regulations require that all vehicles being used in the Reserve are registered, that all drivers and riders are licensed, that vehicles only use the official tracks within the Reserve and that gated management tracks may not be driven on. There are heavy penalties for breaches of all of these regulations, and Parks Victoria intend to adopt a ‘zero tolerance’ approach to handing out fines in future. For enquiries about Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve, please contact: Keith Windle, phone 0429 651 298.

Arthritis in Pets
•Arthritis in Pets Degenerative joint disease, otherwise known as arthritis is inflamation of the joints. When arthritis occurs, the cartilage lining of the joint wears down, resulting in inflammation, swelling and pain. Arthritis is very common in both humans and pets, and can be regarded as the same disease.
Arthritis in horses Degenerative joint disease, also known as osteoarthritis is a common condition in horses. Arthritis is the number 1 cause of poor performance in athletic horses. Stiffness, not striding out, lameness or joint swelling are signs your horse is in pain. Before initiating any type of treatment it is important to have a correct diagnosis.
Arthritis is one of the most common issues that affect middle age to senior dogs and cats. Arthritis can affect one or more joints anywhere in the body; however the most common joints affected in pets are the knees, hips, elbows and shoulders. While age is a fundamental cause of arthritis, it can also develop due to injury, genetic makeup, poor nutrition and obesity .
Signs of Arthritis: Limping/Lameness Difficulty rising Licking of joints Reluctance to jump or climb stairs Inactivity Yelping if joint is bumped or touched Swelling

The source of pain It is important to recognise the signs and symptoms of arthritis as it can be needs to be identified by a source of chronic pain that negatively affects your pet's quality of life. our Veterinarians via a thorough examination. Treatments vary depending on the type of arthritis. Treatment focuses on reducing symptoms and improving quality of life. Treatment may include: Analgesics to reduce joint pain Non Steroidal antiinflammatory drugs Pentosan (Glucosomine) is a drug used to alleviate joint discomfort.
Managing Arthritis:
The first step to managing arthritis is to have the condition accurately diagnosed. Our Vets can then devise a treatment plan that best suits your pet, depending on a number of factors such as age, severity of signs and whether they have any other health problems.
Different Treatment Options May Include: Cartrophen is an injection given at weekly intervals for four weeks. 80% of pets respond to the initial course. The frequency of ongoing treatment varies depending on the severity of arthritic changes. Non steroidal - anti-inflammatory medications may be prescribed by our Vets. They work by reducing the inflammation around the joints. Regular check ups with our Vets and blood tests to monitor your pets liver and kidney function is required while on these medications. Joint health supplements or prescription diets that contain Glucosamine, Fish oils or Epiitalis. These supplements aid in the protection of joints and can be given on a long term basis. With Winter fast approaching its important to remember your pets arthritis symptoms may worsen with the onset of cold weather. Although there is no cure for arthritis our Vets have a number of effective treatment options to keep your pet mobile and comfortable.

Inverleigh’s Auskickers Win At Kardinia Stadium!
Introducing Inverleigh’s 4 new AFL footy players, who won their match at Kardinia stadium on Sunday 30th April. Local 7yo footy champs Tyler, Dallas, Monty and Patrick (L to R) dominated play in the Red team, to win against the Black opposition at halftime! Comments from the players: “I was super happy! It was super super good! “ Said Dallas. "I went up for the ruck and caught the ball and did a run for it. But I got tackled before I could kick a goal. There were 6-7 kids who hard-tackled me, and pulled me to the ground. But they didn’t realise I didn’t have the ball
anymore! It was funny!” said Patrick. He went on to proudly say, “But Tyler kicked one! And another boy on our team with a mullet kicked 4!” Eliza Peel

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Wednesday 4 May, 2022
FREE MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR RESIDENTS Golden Plains Shire Council is supporting residents with free mental health support and counselling. Council has partnered with the Barwon Child Youth and Family (BCYF) to provide free counselling for Golden Plains Shire residents. The program will provide free generalist mental health support and drug and alcohol counselling for residents across the Shire with locations in Dereel, Meredith, Rokewood and Bannockburn. In 2020, Council established the COVID Hardship Policy to support residents facing financial hardship due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, Council committed to continue offering financial hardship support, allocating $50,000 to the COVID Hardship Policy in the Council Budget 2021/22. Council also identified the need for mental health support to respond to increased needs in the community due to COVID-19 and allocated an additional $50,000 for the development and implementation of a mental health program for Golden Plains Shire residents. The free counselling program provides residents with easy access to mental health support without the need for a mental health care plan or general practitioner referral. This health and wellbeing support service is available to all Golden Plains residents and families, with the 12-month program due to end 31 March 2023. The free support service is currently available on Tuesdays at Dereel Community Learning Centre, 14 Swamp Road, Dereel and Rokewood Community Health Centre, 55 Ferrars Street, Rokewood; Wednesdays at Meredith Community Centre, 4 Russell Street, Meredith; and Thursdays at Bannockburn Physiotherapy Clinic, 9 High Street, Bannockburn. Telehealth options are also available, where in-person sessions are not possible. To make a booking, community members can contact BCYF at 0432 688 769 or 1300 022 293. Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble says Council is pleased to be partnering with BCYF to offer this valuable service for the Golden Plains Shire community. “Council’s COVID Hardship Policy has been a valuable financial support for residents and we are pleased to be providing additional support for those whose mental health has been impacted by the pandemic. Council has established a strong partnership with BCYF and we are happy to be working closely with them to deliver this important service in Golden Plains Shire. “It has been a difficult two years for many members of our community and it is vital that all residents have access to mental health support and this free program will make it much easier for residents to seek that help. “Taking care of your mental health is as important as looking after your physical health and I encourage anyone who may be struggling or is in need of mental health support or drug and alcohol counselling to utilise this free service.” This new service follows the successful Let’s Come Together drug and alcohol support program delivered by BCYF in 2021. The Let’s Come Together program provided inclusive coffee and cake catch ups for community members looking for information on mental health and drug and alcohol services available to residents and how to access them.
