The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them.

Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001.

Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting.

Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire.

The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee.

Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history.

We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept meet in the Inverleigh Public Hall 0n the 4th Monday of each Month @ 8pm the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collec(Except December & January) tions.

VISITORS ARE ALWAYS WELCOME We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable President: Katrina Robson meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Hello all at the start of another month, It’s still very dry but it will rain again...sometime....soon we hope.

The Inverleigh Progress Association have been working on reconstruction of the Inverleigh website and are happy to announce that it will be on line very shortly.

The new web address will be “Inverleigh.org.au” and whilst I don’t have an exact date, you can look up this address and as soon as it becomes alive, you will see it on your device, complete with lots of information about the local area, local businesses, Leigh News current and past editions etc. etc. If you have something that you feel would be of value to include on the site, send details to leighnews@bigpond.com and I’ll pass it on to the Progress Association Committee.

Thanks too, to all those who responded and sent ANZAC Day photos to me to use in this issue. (see the front cover and P3). Leigh News 3 ANZAC DAY AT INVERLEIGH MEMORIALS WELL ATTENDED

This years ANZAC Day ceremonies in the area were all well attended again, including the 9:15 march and ceremony at the Monuments (pictured above) at Inverleigh. There seems to be an increase in younger people, including children attending, which is good to see, reports local RSL President, Mal Johns.

The annual Footy Match between Inverleigh and Bannockburn hosted a magnificent service as well with a large crowd looking on. Congratulations to all the winning sports teams on the day, and to Inverleigh Senior team for winning the Footy.

GOOD FRIDAY APPEAL AT INVERLEIGH ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS

This year $32,400 was raised for the Royal Childrens Hospital at the Inverleigh Good Friday Family Fun Day. Well done to all the organisers, Stall holders, amusement rides, Food Stalls, Auction, Fun Run, Easter Egg Hunt and all the other activities on the day. The organising committee plan to be back again for next years event on the 10th April 2020. Save the date now and plan to be there next year!

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Monday 8 April, 2019

SOCIAL ROOMS UPGRADE FOR INVERLEIGH Golden Plains Shire Council welcomes the Federal Government’s funding announcement of $500,000 for an upgrade to the club rooms at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex.

The funding was announced by Federal Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson MP at the football match between the Inverleigh Hawks and Geelong West Giants at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex on Saturday 6 April, 2019. The project will be fully funded in the 2019/20 Federal Budget.

The Inverleigh Football & Netball Club advocated to the Federal Government for the upgrade of the social rooms which will cater for increased activity at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex, fuelled by the lighting upgrade delivered at the site early last year.

Council will continue to lobby State and Federal Government for the refurbishment of existing dated change rooms and the construction of additional new unisex change rooms at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex. This $940,000 project would deliver female friendly facilities that are compliant with AFL Victoria ‘local level’ guidelines to service both ovals.

This latest announcement adds to an impressive list of sporting and recreation projects in the works in Golden Plains Shire. Last week, the State Government and Council announced its partnership to deliver a lighting upgrade at Rokewood Recreation Reserve. Construction of new lights at Linton Recreation Reserve, also funded at the State Government and Council, is almost complete; and in February, Council secured a Federal Government grant of $500,000 for new lights at both ovals at the Victoria Park Recreation Reserve in Bannockburn.

Also funded by the State Government and Council, the following projects will soon be completed and delivered to the community: a new netball court, multi-purpose court and shelters at Victoria Park in Bannockburn; and a significant upgrade of the Smythesdale Skatepark to create a premier regional skate facility.

Mayor Cr Owen Sharkey says Council is delivering an unprecedented program of new and improved sporting facilities, and welcomes the latest announcement by the Federal Government.

“Improved social rooms at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex will support the local clubs to attract more players, increase club membership and build their supporter base. It’s a valuable project not just for the sporting clubs but for the whole Inverleigh community who attend matches and events at this great community facility.

“Council will also continue to seek further support from the State and Federal Government to fund the construction of new change rooms at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex that will deliver unisex, compliant facilities that encourage more female participation in local sports as the population of Inverleigh and Golden Plains Shire continues to grow.”

“Council has lobbied hard for government investment in community facilities in Golden Plains Shire and we thank the Federal Government for supporting the future of our local sporting clubs with this new upgrade project. We are pleased to welcome this allocation from the Federal Budget and with the federal election on the horizon, Council will continue to seek strong bi-partisan commitments for the people of Golden Plains Shire.

Rainfall for Inverleigh

POLICE REPORT FOR MAY 2019

Hello all,

Another Easter period over and done with, I returned from leave for Good Friday and I have been pretty busy on the road since then mainly with tourists. Good Friday night I issued 20 infringements, amongst them were motorists detected doing 131, 2 x 133 and a 152 km/h in the 100 km/h speed zones around Inverleigh and Shelford.

I also detected a motorist doing 91 in the 60 zone through town. All five had their licences suspended for between 3 and 12 months. Unfortunately this is some of the behaviour I still find occurring on our roads.

Disappointingly, I have intercepted a couple of locals recently doing more than 20 km/h over the speed limit which I thought I would not be getting anymore but I have in

the last month. If you are doing this in future expect to be issued with an infringement, I do not expect to be pulling over locals for doing the wrong thing anymore.

Driving on the Hamilton Highway near the rail crossing I recently saw what residents experience on bin night in trying to cross the road with their bins with cars hurtling towards them. Can we give them some consideration and slow down when approaching them, imagine if you were in the same situation.

Had an enjoyable morning with the family again at the Inverleigh Good Friday event, well done to the organisers and volunteers for running another successful event.

Golden Pens – Write Side Up

Hello from the Golden Pens – Write Side Up writing group, some of you may be familiar with our group from articles published in the Bannockburn Newsletter but now I would like to introduce us to the Leigh district so you can see what we are all about.

We are a small writing group that meets at the Bannockburn library every fortnight for fun and indulgence with words. We generally have a jolly time and lots of laughter is not unusual. Our group has self published 2 anthologies, Snowflakes on the Plains and Gathering Gum Leaves that are filled with stories and poetry from all members of our group. It is always an exciting time when we decide to compile another tome, as we are doing at the moment.

Over the past few years our group has undergone a slight shift in direction and we are now at a place where we feel we can invite new members into our fold. If you like words but are not confident enough to write them down then maybe our group is the place for you. We have no formal structure or leader and we basically just fly by the seat of our pants which makes for interesting meetings. We are totally uncritical, in fact it is the one thing we all agree on and live by.

Whatever subject your passion encompasses, it will be accepted with open arms. So why not give us a go? You can see us at the library every fortnight and our first meeting for May is on the 9th at 1:30pm

MAY 2019 CALENDAR

A Chronicle of the Bourke Residence , High St. Inverleigh 1935-2019 “Recollections from Current Family Members”

In 1935, after the death of her husband, May Simpson (nee Bourke) returned to Inverleigh with her 3 young children and purchased the Johnson shop and residence in High St. Inverleigh.

May’s mother Catherine Bourke moved in to assist with the raising of her grandchildren and 3 of May’s bachelor brothers took up residence in the attached billard room. For 10 years May continued to operate the business providing basic household products, sweets and soft drinks. The latter being very popular with revellers at the many dances held in the nearby Mechanics Institute as the shop’s cellar was an ideal spot to “keep the drinks cool”.

May was the eldest of Catherine’s 7 children and by the 1950’s and 60’s there was an extensive extended Bourke family spread over Victoria and beyond “The Shop” however retained its role as a focus for family activities. Weekend trips to the country from Melbourne ,hunting, fishing in the Leigh River(black fish & eels), attending the dances/balls, supporting the local footy & tennis teams, playing euchre, school holiday adventures ,catching up with local friends and family celebrations. Each year May, Catherine and Frank would host the family Christmas lunch, the shop

providing the ideal space for the 40 plus Bourke family from 4 generations…, crepe paper streamers adorned the wall shelving, wooden trestle tables arranged down the centre were decorated with Franks home grown gladioli and

of course bowls of lollies, bottles of soft drink and the occasional “Ballarat Bertie” long neck. For the younger generation the shop’s fixtures such as the large wooden lift top lidded storage bins or display windows made excellent hiding spot for the inevitable games that followed. The cellar was OOB, too scary and dangerous after the floods.

When in 1975, Catherine celebrated her 90th birthday at the residence she was asked by the “Leigh News “reporter of the day “What was the reason for her longevity?” she responded with...

“Plenty of hard work”. Simply, that was accurate... for 40 years the residence had provided little in the way of domestic ameni-

ties…well and hand pump for water, no plumbing, limited electricity, wood fired stove for cooking and heating, a copper for hot water and an outside pan toilet…all she had weathered with practicality, good grace and a sharp mind.

May predeceased her mother who remained in the High St. residence looking after her bachelor son Frank until, to the delight of her family in 1980, she agreed to move to Grace McKellar, surviving till her 101st. year. Frank also determinedly stayed at the residence until ill health required his move to Winchelsea Hospital where on his death in 1996 the occupancy of the “ Bourke Residence “ ceased.

Postscript:

•After occupancy ceased May Simpson’s family was able to negotiate the Land Acquisition Order that had been placed on the property by the Education Department in 1995 for its utilization by the Inverleigh Primary School.

•In 1996 the property was carefully dismantled by the family, materials recycled, the underground tank and cellar filled in and many items restored as treasured reminders of the “Bourke House”. prepared by Marj Peel.

Welcome back everybody! Term 2 and 3 are traditionally very busy especially and it is very pleasing that everyone kept up their positive reading habits over the holidays which will hold them in good stead as we continue to have a strong focus on this at our school.

We will also use this app to send out reminder notifications for school events as well as the ability to send our school excursion forms electronically.

ANZAC Day

Thank you to those students who represented the school at the Shelford memorial; especially Audrey Miller and Alexander Poulston who assisted with raising the Australian Flag down at the monument.

I have heard that afterwards there was an impressive breakfast served at the Shelford Hall that included scrambled eggs, bacon, onion, tomatoes, sausages, toast, fruit and Anzac biscuits – of course!

Professional Development

Miss D, Mrs Miller and I are attending professional development at Bacchus Marsh Primary School where we will be looking at how we can implement our Fountas and Pinnell kit that supports the students with their reading levels.

Woolworths Earn and Learn

Mrs Wilson has booked us in for a Woolworths Bannockburn visit as part of the schools Earn and Learn at 10am on Monday 6 May. The visit to Woolworths will enable us to get an extra 500 stickers towards our Earn and Learn total.

Cooking Program

To fully implement and plan our cooking program for the ear we have developed a cooking timetable that specifies the cooking date and food that the students will be making for their lunch. The program is designed to provide students the opportunities to make simple and easy food that can transfer to their home environment under supervision.

We welcome any parent help on these days to support the cooking program. For catering purposes please advise teaching staff if your child(ren) are unable to participate in a certain week or inform the school if there are any additional allergies or intolerances we need to be aware of.

REMEMBERING FAYE SHAW

Faye was born Faye Margaret Stoddart and lived her early life in Inverleigh attending Inverleigh Primary School, before her secondary schooling in Geelong. She was a keen beachgoer in the sixties and she met Zane at the beach in Torquay. He was a keen surfer and together they enjoyed the beach and the music. Faye was an Elvis Presley fan of the first order and it was his music Zane chose for the service following her recent death.

Together they lived in Belmont, where their three children, Lasseter, Chivoen (Gaelic for Anne) and Wetzel (named after an American frontiersman, Lewis Wetzel of German origin mentioned by novelist, Zane Grey) were born and raised. Zane worked as a senior laboratory technician at CSIRO until his retirement. Faye and Zane, together with Faye’s mother moved back to Inverleigh and settled in Park Street.

Faye was right into the community and became an early advocate for Victoria Park. Together with a small committee, helped by Councillor Des Guinane, she worked to protect the crown land, then managed by Parks Victoria, from sale for housing, a very real possibility at the time.

Since then a local committee has looked after the space so that the people of Inverleigh and districts can use the facility.

In order to raise funds Faye arranged for a scrap metal skip to be located behind the clubrooms. For a number of years this helped raise funds to maintain the park, which included regular mowing for fire risk etc. Unfortunately, some people dumped unsuitable goods and eventually the price of metal went down and the service was no longer viable. It has begun again recently and provides extra funds.

The Leigh News was until a few years ago printed in Winchelsea on A3 sheets which had to be folded and collated. A group of volunteers met one Thursday evening a month for this task at a house in Park Street. When the incumbents took a sabbatical overseas, Faye suggested we move to the clubrooms at Victoria Park and until the cur-

rent printing arrangements, this is how the News was completed. Early mornings when the Inverleigh Store opened Faye collected her paper and updated the public notice board. If it was time for the Leigh News she would deliver them around town in Fabfaye, her little car.

Faye was also a member of the Inverleigh Progress Association and took over the Presidency in the early 2000s and held it until Hilary Hamilton volunteered. Under her stewardship the river pump was upgraded, a Section 86 committee was formed to maintain the open space and river walks on the north bank of the Leigh River, the Historical Walk brochure was compiled and published with our Historical Society and various other things to benefit this community.

Each election day she would be at the polling booth, handing out How to Vote cards for the ALP. This was another happy day as she would chat to everyone as she worked, sometimes for most of the day. There would be a break at lunchtime as she went home to care for her elderly mother and then whoever else was on the gate would hand out her cards until she returned.

Faye attended Inverleigh Seniors and was always a contributor. Sadly, over the past few years her health failed and she became a resident at Hesse Health in Winchelsea. We will miss her and send our thoughts and thanks to Zane and family for her life in Inverleigh.

Bannockburn Community Plan Projects 2018-2019 Making Bannockburn an even better place to live.

May 2019 Update.

The Bannockburn Community Planning Group is one of several in Golden Plains Shire.

We work with the Shire to improve living conditions for ratepayers. There are several areas of focus according to the interests of the members and needs within the community. Here is a summary of some of our activities.

Wanted, a new editor for the former Bannockburn and District Community Newsletter.

Unfortunately, BANNEWS ceased production mid 2018 when the indomitable editor Lyell Reeves took a wellearned break. He has been sadly missed and our group is offering to support a new editor. Lyell generously carried out the role on a voluntary basis but we hope to be able to set it up so the editor can receive some financial compensation for the work.

We can provide funding to set up with a suitable computer, printer and software.

Milton St Arbours.

We are now working with GPS to install plant covered shade arbours along the foot-/bike path in Milton St between the schools, adjacent to Wabdallah Reserve.

These would be pleasant, shaded areas with seats where people could pause for a chat on their way to the school or play group. They will be NO SMOKING areas.

Family Fun Bike Ride Saturday May 25 at 11 am.

To keep the plan in the spotlight we run a couple of fun family bike rides per year and the next one will be on Saturday May 25th leaving from the carpark opposite the Teesdale Store at 11am. Keep a look out for posters. It’s a pretty easy flat ride of 12km and takes about 1.5 hours depending on the stop and chat time. It is necessary to dismount in a few places due to rocks, long grass, fallen branches or stream crossings.

Introduction:

Many readers will be familiar with the Bannockburn and District Community Newsletter which served the region well for many years under editor Lyell Reeves. As Lyell is taking a well-earned break, we are reaching out to the Leigh News to get our message out. Please feel free to contact Stuart if you wish to make any comments re the management of the Bannockburn Reserve which runs between Harvey and Mason roads and on both sides of the Bannockburn-Shelford Rd. Check it out on Google Earth. The images have been refreshed recently and provide an excellent overview of a very important local biodiversity reserve.

The Bannockburn Reserve is managed by the Ballarat Environment Network under an arrangement with DELWP, while the Inverleigh Reserve is managed by Parks Victoria.

Roger Thomas is BEN’s Reserve Manager and Stuart acts as the local contact.

Free Firewood; Coppicing program

A major source of funding for us comes from harvesting sugar gums for firewood, posts and furniture. They were planted in the late 1940’s to 50’s. Some sections are now going through their second rotation.

Following harvesting some follow up management is required to reduce the number of sprouting stems per stump to one or occasionally two. We also thin them out to compensate for reduced rainfall. They were planted during a wetter than average period. The aim is to achieve larger trunks for the next rotation.

The economics of the harvesting prohibit paid labour to do the coppicing so FOBB has initiated a system where local people may come to get firewood which is left over following the harvesting. It’s a bit short or thin to bother loading on a truck but is a perfect size for firewood and does not need to be split.

People who wish to be part of the system have three options:

1. Work on coppicing under FOBB direction for two hours then you are free to collect a trailer load of wood. For this work you need a chainsaw, safety gear, a splitter or axe and a pair of big loppers.

2. Work for two hours on coppicing but don’t need wood and we will pay you $60.

3. Pay us $60 and collect a trailer load of firewood.

There is plenty of wood and plenty of work in this sustainable harvesting system.

Note that we cannot take wood from the native vegetation parts of the reserve nor take wood from the piles that the harvesting contractors are curing while the bark drops.

Good Food for Thought - (and healthy growth!)

We all know the importance of a well balanced diet for good health.

In dogs, particularly growing puppies, this is no different!. Puppy food is formulated to be higher in calcium, phosphorous, protein and other vital elements involved in healthy bone and muscle formation-especially in the rapid growth phase a puppy goes through.

Koda

An 8 week old husky puppy named Koda presented to us after his new owner noticed his legs were bending at the carpus (wrist) where they should be straight. Only the front legs were affected.

On examination the pup was not in pain when the joints were touched, flexed or extended and the owner noted no decrease in play.

Interestingly, the deformity of the limbs was not always present. When the pup was not weight bearing the owner had pictures of the pup from that morning lying down and the leg looked perfectly straight.

This was a helpful clue to the condition. A bone growth plate disturbance or a bony deformity/injury will persist regardless of whether the patient is weight bearing or not.

Upon further questioning of the owner, it was discovered that although the pup had puppy food to eat, he MUCH preferred the adult dog food his new brother had on offer.

We diagnosed this puppy with a condition known as Carpal Flexural Deformity/Laxity. The condition is more common in males than females and is over-represented in medium and large breeds.

The older our pets get, the more likely mobility issues can occur.

Often these problems are provoked by the onset of colder weather.

The first step in managing arthritis is to schedule an appointment for a thorough clinical examination.

Various veterinary treatments are available to manage osteoarthritis in pets.

Listed below are just a few we find helpful.

As mentioned above, puppy food contains higher levels of calcium and protein and also other minerals such as Vitamin D (helps get calcium and phosphorous from the gut into the bloodstream) and Vitamin C (helps get calcium and phosphorous from bloodstream to bone). Problems can occur when there is too much or not enough of any of these elements in the diet creating an imbalance in a growing puppy. In this puppies case, he was getting an inadequate amount of calcium in his diet, which meant his bones and tendons/ligaments were not forming correctly.

Koda was prescribed a strict puppy food only diet and also controlled but increasing exercise to help load and strengthen the developing bones, ligaments and tendons. Dressing and splints are generally contraindicated since the aim is to increase muscle tone and not exacerbate muscle weakness.

Large breed puppies are often fed on a ‘large breed puppy food’ until they are two years old as they are still considered to be growing this whole time. Often this diet has slightly less protein and calcium in it than a smaller breed puppy food as we don’t want the growing pup to become to heavy for their bones. Similarly, over nutrition in a large breed dog (ie feeding a puppy food too high in protein/calcium) can result in similar bent leg condition.

In the case of this little puppy, the owners happily reported the pup had regained straight legs within 2 weeks of corrercting the diet and activity levels.

Cartrophen is a veterinary product that increases joint fluid production and increases blood supply to joint surfaces.

Anti-inflamatory medications can also be used to help control the pain associated with arthritis. Anti-inflammatories will not slow the progression of the disease, and should be used in combination with other treatments.
