The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial
ANZAC Day has come and gone, all be it a bit different to previous years, but moving forward again since last year. On page 3 is an article about our retiring President of the local RSL, Mal Johns. While interviewing Mal for this article I asked Mal had he met anyone really famous, and being just a day or two after the passing of HRH Prince Phillip, he excitedly recalled the occassion when they had met. Mal says: "He was a a really good bloke!" and at the end of the conversation said "Thanks for the chat" to which His Royal Highness replied in true blue aussie accent "yep, Good onya mate" or words to that effect. What a great life moment that was. If you have met someone special in your life, please drop me a line at "leighnews@bigpond.com" and I may well use it in a future edition. For now, "see ya all later, and look forward to crossing paths around the village again soon".
Tribute to Mal Johns, Past President of Inverleigh RSL
Mal Johns with local identity, Jean Hair, at the ANZAC Day service in Inverleigh May 2019. This month will see the retirement of Mal Johns as president of the Inverleigh Branch of the R.S.L. after a career in the Navy and various other opportunities to provide for his family. To say that Mal is a colourful character would be an understatement, as I found during a recent opportunity to hear about his life over morning tea. Mal is the youngest child and has 7 siblings, 4 boys and 3 girls. He was in an orphanage at the age of one and a half and was fostered out at the age of five. His foster father was a Swedish mariner on a four masted sailing ship and the family were settled in Adelaide S.A. Mal’s older brother was in the second world war and served in Alamein and Tobruk. As a small child Mal admired and looked

up to his brother as a mentor and so joined the Army Cadets. Mal’s foster father died when Mal was 14, and shortly after this, he left school to start his working life as a sheet metal worker, then moved on to working in an Office Furniture factory and then as an interior and exterior painter and decorator. He applied to join the Army as a strapping 17 years old, weighing in at 7 Stone 4 pounds (46 and little bit kilos), but the army had concerns for his suitability and he was rejected. Walking away from the enlistment building, Mal noticed a sign for the Navy, so undeterred, he applied there and the rest is, as they say, history. And so, at 17, Mal began his service life in South Australia, then by travelled train to HMAS Cerberus at Crib Point, followed by HMAS Albatross and then in 1961, he was posted to HMAS Melbourne and so began his sea life. He sailed around South East Asia and beyond during the Naval part of his life and decided to leave full time service in 1980. Mal continued in the Naval Reserve Force until 1989. Mal then became House Manager at Sandringham Yacht Club and then Environmental Officer at the Western General Hospital in Footscray. Then, moving to Geelong he became Cleaning Services Manager and Service Manager for Western Victoria for P & O Services/ Berkeley Challenge. He was then Environmental Officer for Terang/Mortlake Health Services followed by Trainer and Assessor for Ethridge Cleaning Services. Local Government was next on the agenda and Mal also represented his community as a local member for the Shire of Leigh and was also Shire President in 1993, 1 year prior to amalgamation. Mal is best known for his service to our local community as President of our local R.S.L. He joined the R.S.L. in 1985 when there were just 15 members, and moved on to become president in 1988 until his retirement now in 2021. Mal’s successor as President is Deema Johnston. The RSL commenced in 1916 as a Memorial and Welfare organisation of Army, Air Force, Navy, Nurses and other women’s services. More members were added to the local RSL after Mal became President, as relatives of past members were allowed to join the organisation. Soldier Settler families in the district were added in memory of their loved ones. The RSL today is a much larger organisation and now includes, CFA, SES, Police, Ambulance as affiliated members, including members immediate family members. There are photos in the Inverleigh RSL building of the monuments when they were located at the east end of Inverleigh. When the monuments were relocated continued on Page 6.

Inverleigh Youth Pop Up Space
There has been a great response to the Youth Pop Up Space in Inverleigh, which started on April 21st, and runs each Wednesday of Term 2 from 3.30 – 6.30 at the Inverleigh Public Hall. 31 young people came on the first day – a great mix of ages, genders and schools – creating a very friendly and welcoming vibe. The Pop Up Youth Space is an initiative of the Golden Plains Shire Youth Team in consultation with Inverleigh Progress Association and Councillors, reflecting needs expressed in the local youth survey. Pictured are Golden Plains Shire Youth Workers, Karl Kasbach (left) and Mark De Campo, beside their banner at the front of the Inverleigh Public Hall. NEWS FROM VICTORIA PARK RESERVE INVERLEIGH
A very big thank you to the Bendigo Bank at Bannockburn for our 2020 grant. Recent services at the Memorials have included Staff from Defence International Training Centre, including S E Asia Allied Forces from 2000 – 2017. In early days, 40 -50 people made up the usual attendance but this increased over the years to an estimated 1800 marching from the RSL in High Street Inverleigh to the memorials. Still today, an annual ANZAC Day footy match is held between Inverleigh and Bannockburn. During his time as President, Mal has met many dignitaries, including Prime Ministers, Governors General and various members of the Royal Family, including HRH Prince Phillip as shown in the photo on page 3. Mal, on behalf of the local community of Inverleigh and Golden Plains, I salute you for the many, many hours of service to the local community and beyond. You are well known and highly respected for your contribution to the RSL and the wider community. Enjoy your retirement my friend. Peter Trevaskis (Editor)

Turtle Bend-Teesdale Photo: Andrea Bolton
This photo, by Andrea Bolton, shows the pavilion at Turtle Bend, Teesdale. Turtle Bend Reserve is located on a bend in Native Hut Creek, where Eastern long necked turtles can be found. Cleaning up and revegetating Native Hut Creek began in 2002. As part of that project, a permit was granted to remove Aleppo Pine tree seedlings that had spread across the creek from the remaining Aleppo pine tree planted in the mid-1920s to commemorate the battle of Lone Pine at Gallipoli, as the trees had fallen over the creek. The logs were later used as the supporting structures of the Turtle Bend Pavilion, linking the pavilion to the earlier history of the site. The Turtle Bend project was conceived, initiated and coordinated by Stephen & Lina Murphy aided by a group of dedicated local residents and the Golden Plains Shire, from community meetings in 2006 to its completion in August 2009. Stewart Seaton, a Scottish architect with a home in Teesdale, came to a community meeting in April 2006 to discuss building a pavilion at Turtle Bend. His initial design was presented to the community for comment at an open day at Turtle Bend on 13/8/07. Stewart, influenced by Gaudi and the wish of community members for the structure to reflect its environment, created an amazing and distinctive design. The pavilion features a turtle shell-design roof, a floor depicting Native Hut Creek and sound instruments shaped like a turtle’s head and tail. The mosaic tile floor was designed by indigenous artist Glenn Romanis, who grew up in Teesdale. It depicts an aerial view of Native Hut Creek at Turtle Bend. The Tile floor was laid by local artisan Colin Smithyman. The turtles ‘musical head and tail’ were designed, built and installed by artist Steve Langton. The copper roof was installed by local sheet metal expert Peter Kruger. The structure was opened and the first ‘Twilight at Turtle Bend’ was held on 3/8/09. In 2010 the Turtle Bend Events Committee formed to put on events and manage the reserve. They have continued with the aims of
looking after and celebrating the environment, providing a place for all ages to meet and enjoy, and promoting a sense of community identity. A ‘Creating Better Places’ grant from the Victorian Government enabled an extension to the stage, a path, a rock wall and a garden designed by Stephen Murphy in July 2011 to give the impression that the creek connected to the creek design on the tile floor in the pavilion. The Turtle Bend committee has continued to work with the Teesdale Community co-ordinators, local volunteers and Golden Plains Shire to further develop Turtle Bend. The reserve now has a skate park, BMX track, play centre, 2nd BBQ, picnic table and shade sale, new toilets and, more recently, a ½ court basketball and netball court. The Turtle Bend Events Committee organises live performances, with acts including Looney Tunes, Los Locos, Quartet Street, Peter Rowan Bluegrass Band, Shane Howard and the 2015 Regional final of the Battle of the Bands. Events have included the regular ‘Turtle Bend Twilight Festival’, which includes a twilight lantern parade by school children from the school down to the reserve. In 2019 the town helped the Teesdale CFA celebrate 70 years of operation, with ‘Teesdale Celebrates’ at Turtle Bend, an event with included live acts, dancing and a community market. Other uses of the reserve include markets, weddings, drumming group and visits by groups such as caravan and motor bike clubs. Turtle Bend Reserve is much used and appreciated by locals and visitors alike. Information supplied by Stephen Murphy and David Bruce. Article by Christine Windle

14 Leigh News A Timely Message from Local CFA's With colder weather approaching it’s time to become a little more fire savvy around your home. So, let’s start with “Home Fire Safety 101” Do you have a smoke alarm in all bedrooms and living areas? Look up and see if something round and cream coloured with a flashing light is there! Smoke alarms are the best way to alert your family should fire occur in your home, but where your alarms are located form an important part of protecting your household. Smoke alarms should also be between each bedroom and the rest of the house and should be between each bedroom and living area. And finally, don’t forget to put them in hallways and stairs. Not convinced yet? Well, did you know you can't smell smoke when you're asleep? So having interconnected smoke alarms in your home means that no matter where a fire starts - all alarms will sound. This way you’ll know if a fire starts in your home because interconnected alarms will sound no matter where a fire starts in your home and form the best possible detection and chance of an early escape for you and your household. It’s actually quite easy to protect your home: Firstly, check your smoke alarm. Is it free of dust and cobwebs? Check it beeps and has a 10-year lithium
battery. Remember, if the unit is older than 10 years, it's time to replace it. When the time comes, replacing the unit with a lithium battery powered alarm means you won’t need to change the battery for the life of the alarm! Easy!! Next month we’ll look at how to safely keep your home warm. The CFA have a website which provides more information at wwww.cfa.vic.gov.au/smokealarms.
At the end of Lent, preparation for Easter, we enter Holy Week beginning with Palm Sunday, sometimes called Sunday of the Passion, marking Jesus entering Jerusalem knowing that later in the week, we call Good Friday, he will suffer; crucified, and die. We would wonder why anyone would knowingly choose to endure suffering rather than run away from it. Actually we see it in many aspects of public and private life today. Those who publically protest sometimes perpetrating what we fondly call civil disobedience and the potential of arrest. In private life we may suffer medical treatment in order to survive a life threatening illness. Some say moving house is one of the most distressful things we can do, but we will endure it believing things will be better for us in another house or place. A celebration in Holy Week is Maundy Thursday, sometimes called Holy Thursday. On the night before he was crucified, during a meal with his friends, Jesus took bread and wine and set them apart as his body and his blood. He told them it was
a reminder of his suffering and death on the cross but also the beneficial outcome through his being restored to life. Jesus told those who would follow him that they are to eat these things as a reminder of his death and resurrection. In some Christian traditions this ritual, variously called Holy Communion, Last Supper, Communion, Eucharist, Mass, Holy Liturgy, and Lord’s Supper, is re-enacted whenever they meet. Sometimes it can be just thought of as a ritual of Christian worship but is also a ritual reminding us of our own life. However we recognise the person of Jesus, may the story of Easter be more than chocolate and eggs and be a celebration that we, too, need to choose to suffer in order to achieve a better life for ourselves, for others, and for all. I invite you to join with your church and share in this ritual of Holy Communion at this pertinent time. The Revd Dr Timothy Smith PiC Anglican Parish of Inverleigh+Bannockburn+Meredith
A Ritual of Life
As some in the community will know, Inverleigh Brigade recently, and sadly, lost one of its active members as a result of illness. Phil Morrel joined as a result of a fire that occurred near his own property and whilst offering assistance at the time, he took it a step further and joined as an active firefighter. You may have seen his refurbished tow truck parked outside the fire shed on Sunday mornings, when he would come down to help with the routine duties that take place on those days. He was a man who placed great store in his community and then acted upon it by volunteering with the CFA. Our thoughts continue to be with Christine, and Phil’s extended family, together with our thanks for his contribution. Inverleigh is a 100% volunteer brigade, drawn from the community for the community. Phil Jacobson

Southern Farming Systems
Immediate Media Release as of 15-4-2021 Southern Farming Systems leading the South West node of the Victorian Drought Resilience Hub The Victorian Drought Resilience Adoption and Innovation Hub will play a critical role to help farmers, agricultural businesses and communities become more resilient to the impacts of future droughts by connecting these sectors to innovative technologies and practices. It will also translate research and knowledge into impactful outcomes and support take-up through testing, adoption and scaling-up of new solutions. Southern Farming Systems (SFS) will lead the South West regional node of the hub and will be partnering with lead agency Melbourne University along with Deakin University, Federation University, LaTrobe University, Agriculture Victoria and farming groups – Birchip Cropping Group, Food & Fibre Gippsland, Riverine Plains and Mallee Regional Innovation Centre to create the Victorian Hub. The Victoria Hub, based from the University of Melbourne’s Dookie campus, has received $8 million in funding over the next four years from the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, and plans to be operational by the end of April. It is one of eight drought resilience hubs across Australia. Scott Chirnside SFS CEO said “This ground-breaking project, where four universities, Agriculture Victoria, and five farming systems groups have gathered together as a team, will create and extend the best information and innovative technologies to prepare and educate rural communities in Victoria for the next climatic challenge, whenever it may be.” “We are tackling these issues when seasons and returns have been better in all rural industries. Our aim is that individuals, businesses and communities can make informed choices about how they might tackle the next drought by making those critical decisions and creating well documented plans now, not whilst in the sleep deprived and highly stressed, anxious state, that drought induces in rural populations." Hub Co-Director Professor Tim Reeves, from the University of Melbourne Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, said this investment will make a real difference to how we deal with future droughts on farms, in the management of our environment, and in our communities. “This hub brings together a great team focussed on delivering real impacts for the agri-food sector in Victoria, in terms of enhanced drought resilience and greater adaptation to our changing climate,’’ Professor Reeves said. “A feature of this hub is the unprecedented co-operation between the partners to co-design and co-govern innovative approaches to future drought resilience. It bodes well for the team to make a real difference to our regional industries and communities.’’ Federal Member for Nicholls, the Hon. Damian Drum announced the Hub at a launch event in Dookie. He said, “Victoria was hit hard by the recent Australia-wide drought, which took a heavy toll on individual household income, as well as entire industries and communities. “Getting regional people working together to ensure research and development is useful for Victorians is a vital step towards successful drought management in our communities.” <end> Contact for Interviews: Michelle McClure, SFS E:mmclure@sfs.org.au or M: 0488 600 692

16 Leigh News Cross Country and Winter Sports May is a busy month for sport! Following our very successful House Cross Country event at Don Wallace Reserve at the end of April, qualifying students will be competing at the MVA Cross Country Event. The Winter Sports will also take place on the 7th of May for Senior School Students. We wish all of our competitors the very best. Go Teesdale! Community OSHC At the last School Council meeting of Term 1, School Council accepted the proposal of Community OSHC to take over the provision of the school's Before and After School Care program. This change will take place commencing on May 24th. Before and After School Care have traditionally been run and managed by School Council at Teesdale. However, as regulatory demands increase in the Early Childhood sector, the cost and logistics of a school running its own service become more difficult. Before and After School Care is a vital service in a school, but not to the detriment of Teaching and Learning. The opportunity to have expert support from Community OSHC is an excellent result for our school. Whilst the move to a service provider does involve a fee increase Council expect this to be outweighed by the benefit of extended hours, the provision of care on curriculum days, the future possibility of a holiday program and the impressive and engaging program Community OSHC provide before and after school.

It has been a fantastic year around the club with lots of social catch-ups on a Friday night, enjoying each other’s company, as well as a lot of functions held in the club rooms. We have had a few new members join and more importantly we have gained support from ongoing and new sponsors of the club. This support is very welcome and exciting and we urge you to check out our list of sponsors on our web site. We have made a few improvements around the club including a new path and planter boxes in the car park, so thankyou to everyone who helped make these a reality. 22 Leigh News SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL On March 25th, the students from Grade 3 and upwards went to Goldsworthy Reserve for the annual schools athletics carnival. This was the first time competing in this event for the majority of our students as it was cancelled last year due to the Coronavirus. Despite this, our students competed admirably, achieving some great individual results. As a whole school we received several compliments from other staff members about the behaviour of our students, which is something that we are all proud of. At the end of the day, although we were the smallest school competing, we were the third placed school overall. We are so proud of our students for their efforts. Well done guys! On the last day of term, the students were so excited to participate in the school’s annual Easter Egg Hunt. Warm weather meant that this had to happen earlier in the day so that they didn’t end up with squishy, melted eggs in their hands. It was great to see the older students working well with the younger students to help them find eggs and making sure that the goodies were shared evenly amongst them all. On April 21st, the whole school made their way to Meredith Primary School for a combined excursion to Ecolinc in Bacchus Marsh. It was a long and winding road, and the students were very happy when we arrived at the venue. Our students broke off into two groups and worked with students from Meredith to learn about different topics. The junior students learnt about dinosaurs, but more specifically, dinosaurs that existed in Australia. They spent time looking at their features and being scientists to decide what they would have used those features for (such as attack or protection) and if they ate meat (carnivores) or ate plants (herbivores). They were palaeontologists and found fossils by moving sand away from bones, and they also looked at the lifecycle of dinosaurs (hatching from eggs). The senior students learnt about Australian Indigenous plants. They learnt about the traditional uses of these plants, such as for food, medicine, and crafting materials. The students went on a walk around Ecolinc’s wetlands area,
identifying different plants and considering what they could be used for. They were also able to participate in planting seeds and potting seedlings of native plants.
Although the schools’ ANZAC service was not held in Bannockburn this year, our students paid tribute to this day all the same. They talked about why we observe ANZAC Day each year and looked at some items that we might associate with soldiers in past conflicts. They created their own postage stamps, depicting what ANZAC Day means to them. The students also cooked yummy, chewy ANZAC biscuits.

Agriculture Victoria has responded to detections of avian influenza and salmonella in the past 12 months. Backyard chooks are susceptible to both. If you have a few chickens at home there are a couple of steps you can take to help protect your birds and your family from disease. To keep your birds healthy, regularly clean your chicken coop and frequently replace the nesting materials. Try to avoid contact between your chicken and wild birds, rodents or pets as these can spread disease. Keep the feed and water clean of animal waste. Your birds should drink the same water as you and the feed should be from a reputable feed mill. Keep records of where you buy your chooks from and records of who you give away or sell your eggs to. To keep your family healthy, wash your hands after handling birds, eggs and other materials in the coop. Collect eggs daily and discard any dirty or cracked eggs. Slightly soiled eggs can be cleaned with a cloth. Refrigerate your eggs until they are ready for use, in a clean carton if possible and cook them thoroughly. https://agriculture.vic.gov.au/biosecurity/animal-diseases/poultry-diseases/keeping-backyard-poultry

TABLE OF CONTENTS •Rat Bait Poisoning and Pets
Rat Bait Poisoning and Pets Rat baits are dangerous and potentially deadly to animals when consumed. The baits are normally flavoured to make them attractive to rodents and these can entice other animals to eat them.
IN OTHER NEWS Bathing your pet There are some major differences between canine skin and human skin. Therefore, we need to use specific veterinary products for our dog's skin. pH: Canine skin has a pH of 6.2 Human skin has a pH of 5.5. A good quality shampoo should be pH balanced to the pet.
Your pet could develop rat bait poisoning if they eat rat bait directly or if they eat tissue from an animal that has consumed rat bait. Rat bait toxicity is one of the most common causes of pet poisonings. Rat bait is a silent killer. Unlike snail bait which causes violent symptoms within minutes after ingestion, most rat bait takes 3-5 days before it starts to take effect. The clinical signs of rat bait poisoning may vary depending on the size of your dog or cat, and how much and what kind of bait they have ingested. The most common rat baits are anti-coagulants that stop blood from clotting normally, resulting in excessive bleeding. Clinical signs may include: Bloody faeces or urine Nose bleeds Lethargy Vomiting Coughing
Leigh News 31 Skin Thickness: The outer layer of canine skin is much thinner than human skin. This means that the delicate skin on our pets needs to be treated and washed with veterinary specific products. These are less likely to strip oils from the coat and less likely to disrupt the normal function of the skin. We have a wide range of Dermcare products at the clinic and our nurses are happy to help you with the right choice for your dog's coat.!
Pale gums Wobbliness Distended abdomen from bleeding into the abdomen. Continued bleeding from small wounds or cuts. If you see your pet ingest rat bait or have any concerns they may have had acces to rat bait contact the clinic immediately. Treatment: Treatment depends on the severity of the toxicity and timing of ingestion. If you can take note of the following information it can be very helpful. Time of exposure Brand name Active ingredients and their concentration. Approximately how much is missing from the pack Bring the package with you if possible Treatment may include : Inducing vomiting. Blood being taken for a clotting test to assess for anaemia. Treatment may be as simple as giving Vitamin K tablets for 3-6 weeks or may require more intensive treatment such as hospitalisation on iv fluids and blood tranfusions. Rat bait poisoning can be treated but seeking Veterinary treatment immediately is critical.

I bumped into her at the pizza place in Bannockburn and she told me she had been too busy to cook tea, too busy playing with her new pup! Another member has just welcomed a brand new granddaughter into the world and she is so happy. Congrats to her and her family. One of our newest members is doing a photography course and he is very busy snapping away. Our resident model maker has a full time job featuring his models on various facebook pages and he is doing very well getting featured
regularly, and I have been busy painting, (walls, not pictures). But we have been writing as well and even though we have our thoughts on other things we have been turning in some great works. So with that in mind this months ditty comes from Karen and it is short but sweet. If your older now and can't touch your toes Don't tell anyone nobody knows Keep it a secret nobody cares Don't put it on facebook It won't get the shares If your waiting for me to get to the point You've run out of luck in this little joint You can contact us via our facebook page GoldenPens – Write Side Up or you can send an email to goldenpens4@gmail.com So until next month, happy writing
