The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road. Town Entrance Signs. IPA worked for many years to procure the 2 Entrance Signs (Hamilton Highway East and West) welcoming travellers to our town.
The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. We welcome all donations to our collection or the opportunity to copy material. We are most grateful to the many people who have kept the Historical Society in mind as they sorted through their own collections. We undertake many interesting projects and have enjoyable meetings, which you are welcome to attend.

Peter’s Editorial A very busy month with lots going on in the district. ANZAC Day services were well attended, New Clubrooms at the Inverleigh Sporting Complex now open and a couple of New businesses now open (Local Creations Page 4 and White Lotus Reiki and Crystals Page 9) For those of you who live or visit "the village" part of Inverleigh, you may have seem myself or my wife with our 2 little dogs, Slipper and Mocassin. Both were getting on in years and Slipper passed away several months ago and sadly "Mockie" passed just a couple of weeks ago. They were approaching 15 years old and may have actually reached that grand age. Hence the Pram! From one end of Inverleigh to the shops and back is a fair walk, so to provide Slipper and Mocassin some respite, the pram came in very handy.

Remembering Our Brother:
Our brother Pat was the oldest of three Children. Our parents, Bill and Valda Quinlivian arrived in Wingeel Soldier Settlement on 1st August 1950 and started farming. Growing up with his two siblings was exciting for us all. When school finished, Pat worked at Vic Rail and later at the Gas Company in Geelong. Pat married Jan Creed in 1965 and settled in Highton. They had two children, Anne and Peter, and later moved to Canberra and started working at the Museum there. Sadly, Jan had health issues and passed away in 2014 and Pat never got over it. Since that time Pat battled with his own health issues (Heart problems) and in the end, lost his battle. He died peacefully in Canberra on 15th February 2022. Rest in peace our dear brother, we love you, Mel (Quinlivian) and Carol (Perrett).

WHAT A LOT OF RUBBISH
Long time member of the Friends Group, Rob Beardsley, with some of the rubbish removed from the Reserve. (Above Photo)
The Friends of Inverleigh Nature Conservation Reserve recently cleaned up rubbish from the Reserve. Rubbish picked up along the Teesdale-Inverleigh Road amounted to about twenty large sacks full. Most of it consisted of bottles and cans and cups thoughtlessly thrown from cars. A surprising amount of car parts were also collected. Within the bushland itself, a large amount of dumped concrete was removed, along with several tyres, scrap metal and timber. A huge thanks to the members and friends who gave up two hours on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to gather up other people’s rubbish. Many thanks also to Golden Plains Shire for providing a skip by which the non-recyclable rubbish could be removed. Found but not removed, was a large quantity of fish in plastic bags. The stench and the mass of maggots were quite disgusting. The same words might be used for the person who chose to dump the fish, along with unwanted cushions and a large bookcase, in a nature reserve! Readers and all nearby residents are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Friends group on Wednesday May 11th at the Inverleigh Public Hall at 7.30 p.m. The guest speaker will be Dale Smithyman, who will talk about his role as Environment Officer at the Golden Plains Shire and about the Teesdale Grassy Woodlands Reserve. common in the local papers. The Shire of Leigh meeting reports in the Geelong Advertiser are littered with mentions of the council traction engines. The 1897 report follows several reports of horses being spooked by such machines in Geelong and a proposed Shire ruling, to just ten years later the Shire owned crushing machine being under a Committee, that workers must be from different shire Ridings, and a runaway traction engine ending up in a gully at Shelford. This month’s calendar story has to be led by the image itself as the Inverleigh Historical Society has no accompanying notes, except it was located in the Leigh Shire. A rock crushing plant was an involved process so we note six men, wood stacked for the furnace, a Furphy water cart, a traction engine powering a flywheel & long belt to drive a crusher, and rocks stacked ready. We are aware of rocks because we live in part of the “Western Volcanic Plains of Victoria”. Trying to find a clear, concise explanation of the geology is beyond my Matriculation Geology studies, but with the help of Wikipedia and Earthsciencesvic.gov.au, it is the third largest volcanic plain in the world and covers more than 10% of the state: over 400 volcanoes provided the extensive basalt plains; there are only a few rivers which flow across the plains, these are the Barwon, Hopkins, Leigh, Maribyrnong, Wannon and Werribee Rivers and the Mount Emu Creek; many small lava flows have built up the thin veneer of aprons to the average depth of about 50 metres. These volcanic eruptions are considered recent 4,000 to 20,000 years ago, and would have been witnessed by Indigenous Australians. Cleared paddock stones have been used for fences and crushed for roads, and other bluestone deposits for constructing houses, schools, civic buildings including the Lethbridge bluestone for the front steps of the Victorian Parliament House. Local councils needed crushed rock for converting tracks into roads, and Tenders were

BANNOCKBURN PROBUS The Combined Probus Club of Bannockburn was established in 2005 with 65 members. Over the last 17 years many members have enjoyed fun, friendship, and fellowship, participating in many bus tours and outings to places of interest. As well as having very informative and entertaining guest speakers. Unfortunately over the years numbers have decreased and with ageing members, the club was unable to form a committee at the March AGM. Therefore the club has had to wind up. The outgoing committee would like to thank all members past and present for their support and contribution to the club, and appreciate those members who served on the committee in various roles and for a number of years. The group will continue to keep in contact with monthly morning or afternoon teas in Bannockburn.

G'day from the penners for this month. As the weather really starts to cool down and the autumn leaves start putting on their annual show, it gives writers a new source of inspiration. Who doesn't love the brilliant yellows, oranges and reds that the deciduous trees regale us with each year. The change of seasons gives us new perspectives and the cooler weather can also clear the head from the summer heat brain fog that sometimes inflicts us writers. So it's down to business and time to reach for new thoughts and feelings, to grab a stray idea and run with it. There is so much turmoil in the world that a lot of the time we try to put our own thoughts of the misery that others are suffering into words, to try to make a little bit of sense of what we are witnessing. On this subject Karen has written a piece that we think is worthy of repeating in the public sphere. As always we can be contacted via our email: goldenpens4@gmail.com or pop into the Banno library and meet us in person. We met every fortnight on a Thursday at 1:30pm.
The Man in the North Putin is a painted whore, putting on a face while making war, His grey tanks surround the land, squeezing in like a great big hand. Nuclear power plant in sight, giving all a shocking fright, And to his shame he rained more missiles on the land. Maternity hospitals, babies too - the most vulnerable and new. Woman, children and the old, are leaving in a mighty rush, The brave and strong Ukrainians have stood their ground, They know the cost of not drawing a line in the sand. The Oligarch is feeling the pinch, It must be tough if your very rich.
Thanks to: Ross & Caroline Wilson of Shelford and Mora Leach of Inverleigh for faithfully supplying the monthly rainfall figures. Your efforts are very much appreciated.
Wise Ruskies protest and risk their lives, as he pursues his evil goals. He learnt his trade in the KGB, we can only guess where it will end. This show pony needs to go, put on a shirt and head to the snow. Siberia is the place for him .... his cold heart buried deep in snow.
Thanks Karen for your heartfelt words and until next month it's cheerio from the penners.

POLICE REPORT FOR MAY 2022 Hello All, Recently Victoria Police launched Neighbourhood Policing so Police can get the basics right and deter crime. What it means for the community: •You will see a more consistent, prevention focused approach to addressing community safety issues. •You can expect: o More policing activity proactively focused on the prevention of crime; o More opportunities to talk with local police about safety concerns, both in-person and online; o More community partnerships and shared problem solving to address safety issues and prevent crime; and o More communication from your local police about what they’re doing to address your safety concerns through local media and social media (Eyewatch). •Local safety committees: o Will operate in each PSA (Police service area) comprising local community groups, government and business stakeholders. o Each committee will develop a local safety plan based on concerns its community has raised. o These will inform deployment and tasking of local police and activities to prevent offending. o If you are part of a local community group, support service or business and interested in working with us to improve public safety phone or email your police station and
ask to register your interest in Neighbourhood Policing with your Local Area Commander. Contacts are on the VicPol website. In other news, there was a theft of a camper trailer in Common Road in the last month whereby unknown offenders have driven down a driveway and removed the camper trailer by unknown means. If anybody knows anything about or witnessed the offence please contact me at the police station. Please be aware of your property/ farm security and keep gates shut and don’t allow easy access to your properties. Some residents believe that these things don’t happen out here but don’t allow yourselves to become a possible victim. There are offenders getting about rural communities seeking an easy opportunity to obtain money/property and I have mentioned this in the past with examples of offending especially on some rural properties. Over the last month as part of intercepting 140 odd vehicles I identified five drivers with serious criminal histories getting about the area. As I have mentioned previously sometimes intercepting someone for traffic/speeding offences leads to intelligence gathering for us to assist in our policing to keep the community safe. Good to see the winter sports kicking off again with the football and netball clubs getting good numbers and hopefully enjoying the new facilities. Keep safe Chris

Heaters can pose a serious fire risk around Inverleigh; including open-fires, wood-heaters and electrical heating. As we don’t have a natural gas line, there aren’t many gas heaters in Inverleigh. Number One Rule: Keep a 1 metre area clear around your heaters in your house! Or you may get more heat than you bargained for… The fires below were caused when wood was stored too close to the heater, or clothes drying too close. If you haven’t used your heater for many months, it is important to check and clean it before use: Enclosed wood-heaters: Empty the fire-box, check doors open/close properly and seals are intact. Check chimneys are secure and free of birds, nests, possums, beehives etc. Use a metal bucket for cleaning out ash, (not a plastic bucket!) If children, animals, or others who need protecting are in your home, keep them at a safe distance by securing the fire with a sturdy barrier. Open fire-places in houses can be dangerous, as embers and sparks can fly out the front of the fireplace, or chimneys can ignite; especially the older-style brick ones. Ensure you have a substantial fire-proof hearth, which is clear of flammable material (ie kindling, newspaper, wood pile, clothes rack). Place a fire screen in front of the fire to prevent sparks flying onto the floor. Like enclosed wood heaters, do check the chimney. Burning dry wood increases burning efficiency, reduces ash, and reduces chimney fire-risk compared with wet wood. Electrical heaters come in many forms, but to generalise they should be all checked so that they are clean, not dusty with electrical cords in good condition. Monitor your heater when using for the first time in a while. Are the fans/temperature/controls etc working as they should? Check and clean filters for dust, debris, fluff, mice, etc. The owner’s manuals are handy, if you’ve forgotten how to! If you are unsure about any of the heating devices in your home and their condition, do seek help from someone experienced or qualified; a local chimney cleaner, electrician, or even the wood-heater seller could suggest a professional. Stay warm, check your heater, and don’t let the call-out be to your place this winter please! Ewen Peel, Inverleigh CFA.

26 Leigh News GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL
From the Mayor’s Desk may 2022 Council is committed to community engagement and providing opportunities for residents to have their say and discuss their needs and ideas with Councillors. This year, we launched a new engagement initiative to support the development of the Draft Budget 2022/23 (Draft Budget). This initiative provided residents with the opportunity to share their priorities for the Draft Budget in line with the Council Plan 2021-2025 themes of Community, Liveability, Sustainability and Prosperity, with the additional theme of Leadership.
We thank the community members who took part in this engagement and we’re pleased to have their input in the early development of the Draft Budget. At the meeting of Council on Tuesday 26 April, 2022, Councillors endorsed the Draft Budget for public exhibition. Council is now welcoming submissions on the Draft Budget from all Golden Plains community members. Copies of the Draft Budget and the submission form are available at goldenplains.vic.gov.au/consultations and at our Customer Service Centres at 2 Pope Street, Bannockburn and 19 Heales Street, Smythesdale. Community members will also be able to make a submission in-person or via Zoom at a Council Meeting on Tuesday 9 June, 2022. To make a submission at the meeting please contact Council at 5220 7111 or email enquiries@gplains.vic.gov.au.
The Future of Aged and Disability Services At its meeting on Tuesday, 22 March, Council resolved to transition out of the delivery of aged and disability care, with the services to move to a dedicated sector provider. The impacted services are home and community care services to assist older people, those recovering from acute care and people with disabilities to continue to live independently in the community, including the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home and Community Care for Younger People (HACCPYP). Service clients and their families have been directly informed of Council’s decision and will be supported through the transition by Council management
and the Active Ageing & Inclusion team. All clients will continue to receive the services they are currently provided without interruption, with Council’s delivery to cease on 30 June 2022 and a new dedicated provider starting inhome care on 1 July 2022. Beyond the date of service transfer, Council staff will continue to be available to support clients through the transition and will offer dedicated navigation support to existing and new clients of aged and disability services in the Shire. Council management has been supporting affected staff during the Best Value Review process which began in November 2021 and all staff have been informed of Council’s decision to transition from the current service delivery. Moving forward, affected staff will be supported individually

NEWS
One of the highlights of my first year as a Councillor was participating in the Connecting Councillors and Our Communities program, which provided community groups and local organisation with the opportunity to have a Councillor attend one of their meetings. As a resolution of Council and a continuation of our commitment to community engagement, we are pleased to once again offer this opportunity to community groups and local organisations. Community groups interested in having a Councillor attend a meeting are encouraged to make a request by contacting enquiries@ gplains.vic.gov.au or calling 5220 7113. We look forward to attending these meetings and learning more about these groups from their members. Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble
through a range of options including redeployment opportunities, paid redundancies and advice on future career pathways in the aged and disability care sector. The Australian Government has sole policy and funding responsibility for the delivery of aged services and has announced a new national system for the sector that will be implemented from 1 July 2023. It is a significant change and Council’s Best Value Review of Aged and Disability Services determined that this new system will negatively impact Council’s commitment to deliver high quality services that provide the best value to the community. Clients and family members with questions about the changes to aged and disability services are welcome to call Council’s Active Ageing & Inclusion team to have a chat on 5220 7151.

TABLE OF CONTENTS •FIV In Cats
FIV In Cats Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus with many similarities to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). FIV is one of the most significant and serious infectious diseases of cats around the world.
Pet Vaccinations Pet vaccines exist to prevent your pet from falling ill. They provide immunity from a range of infectious diseases.
Australia has a high prevalence of FIV compared to other countries, possibly because many owners permit cats to live outdoors. FIV is spread by saliva, being primarily transmitted when an FIV infected cat bites a non-infected cat. Since the virus is spread by fighting, keeping your cat indoors will prevent exposure.
Vaccines work by building up the immune system.
There is a vaccination that offers good protection against the virus and can be incorporated in your cats health care program.
While a puppy or kitten is with its mother, it's protected from illness through the maternal antibodies it receives through her milk. Puppies and kittens are at a higher risk of catching infectious diseases when they are weaned.
FIV is a feline host-specific virus, and there is no evidence that it causes human infection.
Assess your cat's FIV infection risk: How often does your cat go outside? Has your cat ever been in a fight with another cat? Do you know of stray cats in the area? Has you cat ever had an abcess?
Leigh News 35 Signs of infection can vary and may take years to show up. Regular vaccinations are an important part of routine health care. At the time of vaccination a physical examination will also be performed by our vets. Because our pets can't tell us how they feel, regular check ups are vital for their health.
Signs may include:
• Fever • Loss of apetitie • Inflamation of the mouth and gums • Swollen lymph nodes • Lethargy • Discharge from eyes and/ or nose • Recurrent infection If your cat is showing any of these signs it is important to make an Pet vaccination schedules can be confusing appointment with one of our veterinarians. so feel free to contact the clinic with any queries, and to ensure your pet is up to date with vaccination and parasite control.
We send reminders regularly so your pet will not miss vaccinations or repeats of parasite control.
FIV is diagnosed through a thorough examination and a blood test which detects anitbodies of the virus. Early detection of FIV is very important, not only for the health of your cat but also to prevent spreading the infection to other cats. There is no cure for FIV. The virus causes a gradually progressive decline in immune function. Treatment is aimed at preventing and treating infections and offering supportive care. Having FIV is not an immediate death sentence as many FIV positive cats are expected to have a reasonable life expectancy.

Orange Dot Ball: Our Orange Dot ball competition saw a number of kids participate in the modified format which was a lot of fun. Participants included Ava Lubcke, Ivy Lubcke, Charlotte Lomas and Evie Hamilton. Section 5 girls had an amazing season remaining undefeated all year and finished top of the ladder, qualifying them for finals for the second year in a row. As they did in the previous year, they won through to the Grand Final and this time defeated Barwon Heads in a very tight match by the same margin as last year – 2 games! Well done on back to back wins. It was a fantastic outcome for the girls and a deserved win after what had been a very consistent season and the team regularly at the courts during the weeks honing their skills.
Leigh News 43
Our senior Men’s section 4 team consisted of Shane Lubcke, Michael Walker, Lee Price, Mitchell Lyster, Craig Ellis and Owen Lewis. The team had a successful season finishing 3rd but were unfortunately knocked out in the semi-finals. Congratulations to all the senior and junior players on a great summer of tennis. It was refreshing to be able to compete again after the interruptions from COVID 19 the previous season. Again, thank you to all the parents who have made themselves available to assist the juniors with transportation on the weekend and also getting involved with scoring and umpiring. Thank you also to Jo Mullen for co-ordinating the teams each week and recording the results online. With the summer season now completed the club is keen to hear from anybody interested in putting their name down to play in future competitions, winter or summer. This can be a junior team, a senior team or in the mid-week ladies competition. A reminder also that Nicole Mullen is running weekly 45 min coaching clinics at the courts every Thursday afternoon during Term 2 at 3.30pm & 4.15pm. Cost is $10 per child. Nicole can also provide racquets for anyone wanting to have a hit but don’t have one. If you would like to enquire about winter tennis please contact our junior/senior co-ordinator Jo Mullen on 0414 957 432. Enquires re tennis coaching or squad coaching once a month please contact Nicole Mullen on 0419 670 230. Good hitting, Hawk Eye

GOLDEN PLAINS SHIRE COUNCIL MEDIA RELEASE Date: Thursday 31 March, 2022
IT’S TIME TO GET ACTIVE GOLDEN PLAINS Golden Plains Shire Council is supporting the community to get active during April and May with the new Get Active Golden Plains program. The inclusive Get Active Golden Plains program aims to support the health and wellbeing of Golden Plains Shire residents by providing opportunities across the Shire for participation in activities to suit all skills levels. The program allows community members to explore new ways to move with a range of different activities that encourage movement and social connection. Community members will be able to participate in activities including tai chi, Pickle Ball, Afro Latin Dance, yoga and GENKI Fit Step. The program also aligns with the Active Golden Plains program, with residents able to register to participate in Cardio Drumming sessions in Rokewood and Dereel, and additional sessions in new locations. Sessions will be held in Dereel, Meredith, Rokewood, Ross Creek, Inverleigh, Teesdale, Haddon, Smythesdale and Bannockburn, to encourage community members in all corners of Golden Plains to be more physically active. There are no restrictions on participation, with activities open to all ages and abilities. Free transport will be available to support access to the program, with bookings essential. The Get Active Golden Plains program begins on Monday 4 April with Tai Chi at the Dereel Soldiers Memorial Hall, 14 Swamp Road, Dereel, with sessions offered weekly until the program concludes on Tuesday 10 May. Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble encouraged community members to register for the program and get active over the next six-weeks. “Council is committed to providing opportunities to improve the physical and social wellbeing of our communities. The new Get Active Golden Plains program is a great way for residents of all ages and abilities to participate in physical activity. “We encourage residents to get involved and give it a go. With a diverse range of fun and inclusive activities, Get Active Golden Plains provides a safe environment to participate and try something new. The program aims to remove barriers our residents may face to participating in physical activity, with sessions in locations across the Shire and free community transport available.” Registrations are now open for the Get Active Golden Plains program. All community members in Golden Plains are invited to register for any of program’s activities by visiting goldenplains.vic.gov.au/get-active. Registrations for all activities can also be made by phone at 5220 7151 or email at gpshealthandwellbeing@gplains.vic.gov.au.
