27th June 2020. A very cold and foggy morning for the 1st week of our FREE MyGolf Clinics at Inverleigh Golf Club this morning, but the sun shone through for a beautiful morning. Coach Ty Lawson was thrilled with the great turn up of enthusiastic Juniors all keen and willing to learn how to play golf. There will be another Clinic next Saturday morning at 9 am, so if anyone missed out this morning, then you are very welcome to join in next week. For more details, or to register your child's name, please contact: Dianne Morgan (0409 106 559) or email at golf3321@bigpond.com

A huge thank you to Anna, our school crossing super visor at Inverleigh Primary School.

Due to Covid 19, wearing a mask etc. Anna found it hard to blow her whistle while on duty at the crossing, so, instead of a whistle, she squeezes her Pet Pink Pig. Thanks for keeping our kids safe!

WHAT’s IS ON Not much!

The Progress Association has been actively working towards improving the amenity of Inverleigh for over 40 years. Of course all such organisations need volunteers and the Association is no exception. Without them nothing happens. If you have some ideas for the town you would like to achieve, you are welcome to join us and help achieve them. Some of the projects completed by the Progress Association include: The Federation Bridge which was built to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Walking Tracks were established with lots of support from the community, including fencing and tree planting. Public Toilets Progress Association members worked for many years with Council to have the old toilets removed and a new block built, which did not detract from the entrance to our town. They are used more than any other toilets in the Shire. The Clock a new clock was recently installed on the clock tower in our main street, clearly visable from the General Store across the road.

The Inverleigh Historical Society was formed in 2004. It operates under the auspices of the Inverleigh Mechanics Institute and Public Hall Committee. Our Aims are to collect and preserve items of local historic interest and to promote research and interest in local history. LOCAL GIRL WINS GEELONG'S YOUTH AWARD

After struggling through her childhood and early teenage years by not feeling included in society, feeling outcast and unable to connect to anyone, Chloé suffered intense bullying through school, which ended with her spending time in hospital. As an eighteen year old, Chloe came to the realisation that she wasn’t the only child who has felt like this, and there were thousands of other children out there who had gone through the same things she had in the past & continues to face in the present. Simply because there was no one who understood. And that’s how Princess Aspien was born! Chloe took charge of the situation, and now spends her life advocating for children on the spectrum through interactive, fun videos and blog posts, which tackle the harder pressed details of living with Autism. She keeps it light, fun, encouraging and entertaining for a younger audience, and educational for their parents. Chloe now has over 300,000 followers across Youtube, Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok and has gained over 70 million views. Chloe’s passion is to spread her message – “Different, not Less” with as many people as possible. Along with her online advocating, Chloe also speaks at many schools, conferences, public & private events. It is when she is live she really thrives and feels she is connecting with people – which she loves! An ambassador for Yellow Ladybugs, Aspergers Victoria and Treehouse Geelong, she dedicates her life to being a role model, advocate and encourage children and

adults alike on the Autism spectrum. Chloe is the winner of the Disability Inclusion Award at the Geelong Youth Awards 2020, Australian Inspiration award 2019, Geelong Disability Awards 2018, is a regular guest speaker on ‘ABC Overnights’, and is an international public speaker. Avian influenza outbreak in the Golden Plains Shire

The avian influenza outbreak in the Golden Plains Shire may have been unsettling to people who own backyard chooks and other poultry or pet birds. Wild birds such as ducks can carry avian influenza without showing any symptoms and from time to time it can spill over into domestic poultry flocks where it can cause very high levels of fatalities. Rest assured, the Department of Health and Human Services has not identified any food safety issues – properly cooked chicken meat and eggs are safe to eat. Only a small number of people have ever become infected after very close contact with birds infected with the type of avian influenza that has been found, and then only with very mild signs.

What can you do?

There are some very practical things you can do to protect your birds from avian influenza now and into the future, whether there has been an outbreak or not, including: PRACTICE good biosecurity with your birds: wash hands regularly, keep aviaries, yards and equipment clean, limit visitors to your birds, use clean footwear, quarantine new birds before integrating with existing birds, and importantly try practical measures to restrict contact with wild birds PROVIDE your birds with clean drinking water, make sure that their food is not shared with wild birds, or is allowed to attract wild birds, try to enclose them in a way that reduces contact with wild birds

What are the rules?

For the moment, while the virus is still being eradicated, there are some important rules in place that must be followed; HOUSE domestic birds in a suitable

building or net their enclosure to restrict contact with wild birds, separating them from wild birds as practically as you can DO NOT buy, sell or move birds, eggs, manure or equipment into, out of or within the shire without a permit. Eggs available from recognised retail outlets can be bought and moved without a permit Report sick or dead birds to the 24-hour Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888 to help us track avian influenza. Also please report sick or dead wild birds on the same number, so that they can be tested if thought suitable. Call the (03) 4334 2715 number (available 7 days, 9 am – 5 pm) for permits or more information or visit agriculture.vic.gov.au/avianflu

Council Candidate for Inverleigh My name is Clayton Whitfield and I am nominating as a candidate for the upcoming Golden Plains Shire Council elections. I have lived in Inverleigh for 14 years. During this time, I have witnessed a lack of adequate consultation with Inverleigh residents. My candidacy is based on ensuring Inverleigh residents are informed, consulted, represented, and valued constituents of the Shire. I have had conversations with representatives of prominent Inverleigh community groups and the overwhelming response has been that consultation with Inverleigh residents has often been tokenistic, and that when it has occurred, residents’ views have not been heard. Another pressing issue has been a lack of asset maintenance by GPS. Examples of this are the trees in High St and the drainage issues adjacent to our busy Cafe, Bakery, and Hotel as well as the street drainage of Old Town Inverleigh, and the ad hoc approach to the new estate drainage. Inverleigh needs a representative on Council. I have nominated because I believe I have the necessary experience to make a difference for our community. My working background is in building, construction management, and construction education. This experience was earned across the domestic building sector, the Australian Defence Force in the Army Engineer Corps, and vocational education at The Gordon TAFE. As a councillor, I would be a true representative of Inverleigh, taking issues to Council that Inverleigh ratepayers value. I would ensure transparent, two way dialogue with community members while endeavouring to have resources

available for asset maintenance through budget efficiency. As the elections approach, I will be distributing how-to-vote cards. These are important as preferences will play a part in who becomes your Council representatives. Campaigning during the pandemic will mean there are limited opportunities to meet with you in person, but I hope to do so through digital means. I am available to discuss any issues you may have on claymara6@gmail.com Stay safe. Clayton Whitfield

New BBQ and Drinking Fountain at Inverleigh River Park The final expenditure of the State Government Pick My Project grant has allowed for 2 final asset purchases. An electric BBQ and water drinking fountain are being installed alongside the new playground. The BBQ was an obvious choice to complement the playground and nearby seating areas. This latest installation is the conclusion of a 2 year long project that started back in 2018 with the community voting to support the Pick My Project grant application. The success of this community project is due to the fantastic working relationships between the ICPS Steering Group, Inverleigh Early Learning Centre, Inverleigh Playgroup, Inverleigh Progress Association and the Golden Plains Shire Council. We would like to sincerely thank the Council for their support, guidance and collaboration over the last 2 years. I would like to also personally thank the

members of the steering group that contributed over the last 2 years to make this project an outstanding success. We hope the community continues to enjoy using this playground for many years to come! Deb M.

Nathan Hansford = Returning Council Candidate

I am nominating for the 2020 local council elections, if elected as councillor, my role is to support you, your family, your community and your livelihood. As a long time resident of Golden Plains, a husband, a father, a volunteer and a business owner who works, lives and loves our shire, you know I have the community at heart when making decisions on your behalf. Our shire is going through a period of major change, Population explosion, (which will be exasperated by inner city people looking to escape to regional towns after COVID). Infrastructure gaps, recreation requirements, health and well being services, all delivered within shrinking budgets, poses huge challenges and I am up for the task. I believe a great Councillor is one who can work as a group of 7 people, together, to continue to strive for the rural aspect and livablity of Golden Plains, as the number one priority. Please contact me on 0409811138, nathanhansford76@gmail.com, or pop in and talk to me (post stage 3, of course) at our family run cafe 3/71 Holder Rd. Bannockburn.

9 Hello everyone, I do hope that you are getting into a good routine with remote learning, and that you are also finding some new and interesting things to do with your family. I have recently rediscovered the joy (and sometimes frustration) of doing jigsaw puzzles. My current project is a rather ambitious 1000 piece puzzle of the magnificent Teton Ranges in Wyoming. It is helping me to develop perseverance as I sort so many puzzle pieces that look the same. While I find it frustrating in the beginning, I know that once I find my groove and start to work at the puzzle piece by piece, section by section, I will start to reap the rewards of success and I will be spurred on by the challenge to keep at it, to persevere and to succeed in getting it completed. This can be a lot like school work. Sometimes it may seem challenging, but work at it – persevere- and tackle it piece by piece. Breaking down a project or assignment into smaller, more manageable chunks, can develop perseverance and resilience. It also

Grade 1/2 Remote Learning During Week 2 Grade 1-2 students started each day with a Google Meet. Students continued to work hard on their learning tasks. Some of these tasks included constructing a comprehension cube, writing an information report on a favourite fruit or vegetable and making and reading time on clocks.

Students also watched ‘Are We There Yet?’ by Alison Lester and created their own Family Fun Adventure in their remote learning journals.

Students had their first Show and Tell Google Meet which will continue each Friday.

helps to develop good learning habits which your child will take with them throughout life. An article in The Age recently talked about how remote learning looks different in many schools this time around. Many schools have increased the number of instructional videos, ‘live’ lessons and video conferencing, as students missed seeing and hearing their teachers last time. Schools have also provided a more structured timetable, in response to the need to provide more structure for both parents and students. It was encouraging to read that, as we have made similar changes here at Inverleigh Primary School in response to feedback provided by our parents, students and teachers at the end of the remote learning period in term 2. Please stay well, stay positive and stay connected Ms. Sharon Baker Acting Principal

AUGUST 2020 CALENDAR

M.Cuthbertson Sculptor September Calendar Image - Mark Cuthbertson Towards the eastern end of Napier Street, interesting sculptures can be seen. They are the work of local artist, Mark Cuthbertson. Growing up on a farm near Colac, he has channelled his practical skills into the Visual Arts scene via Gordon TAFE, Bendigo University and photography courses. Originally working out of a studio and gallery at the rear of the Carlton Hotel carpark, Mark moved with his family to Inverleigh 22 years ago. As an artist his focus has changed over the years from the time when he made large inflatable pieces for festivals such as Moomba, and the Paralympics. More recently Mark has been a freelance designer for the Back to Back Theatre Company based at the Old Geelong Gaol, joining them on eight overseas tours including ‘Lady Eats Apples’ in London.

Photo: E. McDonald His work includes styles such as inflated, vacuum, formed, small works and concrete. Working as a sculptor for the past five years in concrete, you may have seen his couch in Meredith, homage to the music festivals, or his rabbits in Geelong street art scene. “Public art- everybody has an opinion”. Reading about Mark it is mentioned in his Artist’s Rationale - “his artwork is a playful commentary on society, turning the monotonous into something far more interesting”. Mark has also added to the Inverleigh streetscape as a builder with the café & verandah, originally for Red Door and now housing Sonnystore. In this time of Covid , Mark has been mentoring and collaborating on large contemporary paintings with young artist Robert Croft from Back to Back. 2020 has been a difficult time for established artists, but almost impossible for emerging artists to gain any exposure.

This is a timeless film for all, I highly enjoyed it. There’s some timeless elements to this film that make it suitable for all ages and a very fun film to watch. Firstly, the acting. The acting in this movie is great all round. Cary Elwes steals the show though as Wesley. Robin Wright acts quite well in this movie. I believe that Mandy Patinkinalso gets enough credit as Inigo Montoya. It is also thanks to his acting that the comedy lands 90% of the time, which is rare with today’s children’s films. This film is based on the book The Princess Bride by William Goldman, so the story itself is unoriginal. It does seem to take some creative liberties but nevertheless, this story is great and balanced the story within a story feel. (I have not read the book but I have read plot summaries) It also focuses on the relationship between grandfather and grandson which works well for this film. This story is great and takes the normal hero saves damsel fairy tale and takes it to the next level. Each of the characters in The Princess Bride are unique and compelling. Each of them have their own character arcs and grow which is why this film works so well. Montoya gets his revenge, Wesley gets his wife back and Humperdink is defeated. I highly enjoyed this movie. It’s funny and timeless. There have been rumours of a remake being put into production which I hope won’t taint this film. I highly recommend this film to everyone of all ages. Although, children under the age of 11 would probably need an adult with them. Today’s cool fact about The Princess Bride is that Cary Elwes was actually knocked unconscious by Count Rugen’s (Christopher Guest) sword!

CFA MESSAGE FOR THIS MONTH Nothing like living in Antarctica! But looking at some of the new homes being built they’re going to be nice and warm with their new wood heaters or open fires. In many homes it’s an architectural feature and one around which the family gathers. But, as is often the case, there could be a downside. We had a call out recently to a flue fire, and it’s not the first one! So, have you thought much about the chimney or flue? Your chimney, or the flue from the fireplace or wood burner, has a very real function, and that is to carry dangerous gases from your fireplace, or wood stove, safely out of your home. The last thing you are likely to be thinking about however, is the condition of your chimney. But if you don’t give some thought to it as you light those winter fires, your enjoyment might be very short-lived because dirty chimneys can cause chimney fires, which damage structures, destroy homes and injure or kill people. The chimneys have the job of expelling the by-products of combustion – the substances produced when wood burns. These include smoke, water vapour, gases, unburned wood particles, hydrocarbon,

tar fog and assorted minerals. As these substances exit the fireplace or wood stove, and flow up into the relatively cooler chimney, condensation occurs. The resulting residue that sticks to the inner walls of the chimney is called creosote. And if there’s a sufficient build-up, creosote is highly combustible! Clean chimneys and flues don’t catch fire, and there are different ways you can minimise the risk. You might like to consider having a chimney sweep inspect your solid fuel venting system annually to give you a report on its condition. If you feel that a lesser course of action is necessary then there are many DIY solutions and products which may help maintain a healthy chimney or flue. Don’t forget, fire belongs in the fireplace or fire box, not in the chimney! As is so often the case, some easy maintenance could prevent costly damage.

Inverleigh is a 100% volunteer brigade, drawn from the community for the community.

20 Leigh News IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR PARENTS OF ALL SCHOOL CHILDREN IN INVERLEIGH There has been a noticable increase in vandalism in Inverleigh in very recent times, effecting the safety of all residents and visitors to our town. Damage has occured to the swing bridge, the lookout and trees in this area in particular, caused by bike tracks and jumps.

All relevant authorities have been notified and Golden Plains Shire have responded quickly and affectively to minimise the risk from the damage caused. Any member of the public using these facilities and being injured are covered by public liability insurance, however, now that the Shire have attended to the repairs, if they are damaged again by children, that is NOT damage, that is VANDALISM. Supporting teenage fun in COVID challenging times is so important! But lines have been crossed. Our children unfortunately do need to be reminded it is wrong to damage any public or private property. And that it's not OK to damage infrastructure, destroy recently planted trees and carve out mountain bike trails and jumps into hillsides by the River that could cause landslips and/or injury to themselves or others. More importantly, if a child is seriously injured whilst deliberately causing vandalism , he or she may not be able to recover damages from the Council or land owner. There could also be very serious consequences if the Police are called. Let's all work together to support fun and challenging rides without destroying the landscape and structures.

SHELFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL It was fantastic to see all the students returning to the classroom and we thank all our families and students for adapting so quickly to Remote Learning again.

bear. Other activities have involved designing tin foil boats and calculating how much they can carry before sinking and exposing the design pros and cons.

Remote Learning As the internet in Shelford isn’t always reliable we have been offering families a choice of online school work via Google Classroom and or hard copies of work which we have been available for contactless pick up at the school each week. We have also sourced prepaid dongles for our families to assist with accessing the internet. Gardening Prior to the beginning of Remote Learning the students were very busy in the garden. The students harvested a large amount of potatoes from the school vegetable garden and the patches have been planted with a variety of beans including broad beans. The students each planted several seeds and mulched the wicking beds to help the plants continue to thrive throughout the Remote Learning period.

Upcycling This term we have been focusing on how to reduce, reuse and upcycle items that would otherwise go to landfill. We have continued this via Remote Learning where our students uocycled various items into flower pots. STEM Students have been enjoying a range of STEM activities via Remote Learning. Some of which have involved creating bridges and testing how much weight they can

Cooking We have continued with our weekly cooking by providing various recipes to families. So far we have made fettuccine carbonara, pinwheels, chicken schnitzel and various biscuits. Cooking is a great way to teach fractions, the importance of following instructions and teamwork to our students. We thank all the families and students for doing such a great job during Remote Learning and we look forward to seeing our students back at school.

22 Leigh News A Welcoming New Entrance Over the past few months, our Old School and Administration Buildings have undergone some major renovations. Our school's office entrance now has an inviting new look complete with a new verandah, disabled access ramp and native garden beds. Thank you to Chris Hose from Chartwell Nurseries for your involvement with selecting and supplying suitable plants.

Highlights of Remote Learning Congratulations to all students and their families for their hard work and resilience during this second stage of remote learning. We have been thoroughly impressed with the time and effort that has been put into completing and uploading pieces to both Padlet and Google Classroom. Over the next few weeks we will continue to use Google Meet to conference with students. Each week will have a different learning focus and students will be placed in a range of different groupings. The Grade 4/5/6 students have been focusing on completing procedure writing during Remote Learning. The students were asked to plan out a How to Make Breakfast Procedure. Students had to ensure that their procedure was something that they were able to make. This was because after planning, drafting and publishing their procedure they were asked to create a video of themselves making it. It was great to see the range of different foods that were being consumed at breakfast times. Some of these were smoothies, toast and porridge.

TEESDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL Junior School students have created some excellent art pieces during Visual Arts. These creations are by Halle and Hunter.

Keep up the excellent work TPS and remember no school day is ever perfect and no remote learning day will be either! Do your best, adapt and even move on if you have to. This happens in school each and every day. Important Dates Every Friday – School Assembly streamed live on our Facebook Page Friday 18th September – Last day of term 3 If you would like to know more about our school, please phone us during school hours on 5281 5218 or head to our website at: www.teesdaleps.vic.edu.au or Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/TeesdalePrimarySchool

Desexing your pets TABLE OF CONTENTS

•Desexing your pets •New Microchipping Rules •Grooming during Covid 19 •Thank you IN OTHER NEWS

We are very excited to introduce two new members to the Bannockburn Vet Clinic team. Our new Vet is Dr Kate Richards. Kate grew up on a farm in Winchelsea, went to high school in Geelong. Finishing year 12, completed a Bachelor of Agricultural Science at La Trobe Univeristy in Melbourne. She then worked for 1 year as a ruminant nutritionist before going back to University and completing her veterinary studies at Charles Sturt Uninversity in Wagg Wagga. NSW.As part of her final year she completed an honours projects on the effects of acupunture in horses. Kate has recently moved back to the Geelong region with her husband and animal family ( 2 dogs a cat and a few horses) In her spare time she enjoys playing polocross, surfing, rock climbing, while also having an artitistic interest in painting.

National desexing month was postponed until September due to Covid 19. Once again we are happy to take part, offering 20% discount on all desexing during September. Desexing your pet ensures fewer unwanted and homeless animals. Desexing your pets reduces the risk of them developing mammary tumours, uterine infections, prostate disease, perianal tumours and testicular cancer. Desexed animals are less likely to roam, this reduces the risk of being hit by a car, getting into fights and being exposed to infectious diseases through fighting. Desexed animals are less likely to show aggressive behaviour.

New Microchipping Rules

From 1 July 2020 a source number must be included on any breeder, animal shelter, pet shop or foster carer microchip subscription form for a dog or cat born after that date. As authorised implanters we must collect and include a source number as part of the microchip registration form. Owner details on a microchip record may change over time, but the recorded source number will remain the same for the life of the animal. A source number: Identifies an individual, breeder , business or organisation. Is generated once an individual enrols on the Pet Exchange Register Is automatically allocated to domestic animal businesses (DAB) and foster carers following registration with council. Microchipping not only identifies your pet for life, but it can save your pet's life.

INVERLEIGH SPORTING COMPLEX SCORES $1.5M TOWARDS NEW CHANGEROOMS The Inverleigh Sporting Complex is set for a transformation, thanks to a $1,527,300 funding boost from the Victorian Government’s Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program. Labor Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney today announced that the project is one of 27 to benefit from a share in more than $68 million from the stimulus program. This investment recognises the overwhelming demand for shovel-ready community sports infrastructure and is part of the Victorian Government’s $2.7 billion Building Works package creating jobs and kick-starting vital projects across the state. The project will include refurbishment of two existing player change rooms and supporting amenities, construction of two new female friendly/unisex change rooms and umpire change rooms with supporting amenities including, first aid, massage and storage spaces and installation of new septic system. Once complete, the new and refurbished facilities will support new and existing participation levels in football, cricket, community group programs and assist with the rapid growth being experienced in female football - both umpiring and playing in the region. The facility will provide a perfect base for Inverleigh Football and Netball Club and Inverleigh Cricket Club to develop programs, train, host games and events. This investment is about helping grassroots sports communities get back in the game when the

time is right. From sports field lighting upgrades at multiple sites to new indoor sports courts, investments like these provide high-quality and accessible places for Victorians to reap the benefits of sport and active recreation participation. By working with local government authorities, alpine resort boards and sporting clubs and organisations, the program is fast-tracking shovel-ready community sports infrastructure projects across Victoria and is expected to create almost $140 million in local economic activity. This includes jobs in construction and supply chains with benefits for local businesses through the Victorian Government’s Local Jobs First requirements which will be built into contracts. The program is part of the more than $915 million in Victorian Government investment in community sport and recreation infrastructure since 2014. Ms Tierney acknowledged the Golden Plains Shire Council, Inverleigh Sporting Complex Committee of Management and the Inverleigh Football and Netball Club for their commitment and financial contribution to the project. For more information about infrastructure grant opportunities available through the Victorian Government visit www.sport.vic.gov.au

As Deputy Chair of the committee, I represent the non-Government members on the committee, a committee which sees the Government appointed Chair, holding a casting vote on all decisions. It has been remarked to me that many Opposition members seem to be quite combative with the Premier and Government Ministers. It is important to remember there are strict time limits, usually twelve minutes allocated to each member to ask questions. There is no stop clock or time on and those asking questions have limited capacity to draw a minister’s answer to a close so that they can be moved on to the next topic. The Parliamentary term ‘filibuster’ is the best way to describe many of the answers given. It is not in the Government’s interest to be brief.

Welcome to another edition of the Polwarth update. The last two months have been very uncertain for many in the Polwarth region as we saw very low COVID-19 positive cases grow dramatically through the month of July. However, data released yesterday shows that across the Polwarth electorate, active COVID cases are on a steep decline which is great news. I am sure many of you are beginning to wonder what the wind back of restrictions will look like, and as many of our communities and community groups face the prospect of cancelled events and gatherings in spring and early summer, there are still many things for our communities to plan for.
