Bloomingville features in Yarnton Home & Garden Centre

Camilla Vestertjele, Bloomingville’s Commercial Director was delighted to visit Yarnton Garden Centre to view for herself the new shop in shop. Camilla told the Gifts Today editor “It was so nice to finally meet this customer and see why the joint project has proved to be so successful. They really understand the brand, are so focused on their customers and have an expert visual display team.” Yarnton’s General Manager commented “When I joined Yarnton Home & Garden 4 years ago, I could see straight away it required modernising. Yarnton Home & Garden is brilliantly located just north of Oxford and south of the Cotswolds, so has fantastic potential. I wanted to create a garden centre that was modern and fun and that would appeal to the surrounding demographic. My main ambition for the business is to deliver a brilliant shopping experience for our customers.” Yarnton work closely with very carefully like-minded brands such as Bloomingville, who was one of their first partners, to deliver a cohesive ‘shop within a shop’ model. Yarnton’s General Manager adds “We believe for the customer this model provides a far more cohesive and enjoyable shopping experience. Bloomingville has been a huge success for us. Their bohemian style homewares are perfect for our customer. What’s more, you cannot find Bloomingville close by, so we have exclusivity in the area which is a wonderful point of difference for our centre. “If you have not visited Yarnton Home & Garden please do pop in! We have hot coffee, a Magic Garden for the children and a fabulous shopping experience.”

Enesco Ltd are planning to airfreight in stocks of seasonal goods to support its customers in the run up to Christmas. The company recognises the difficult situation that faces all its valued customers under the current climate, and it hopes this action will ease some of the burden. “The supply chain is under huge stress currently from factories in China struggling to cope with ongoing covid issues and a lack of electricity. Add to this shipping line delays and the lorry driver shortages which we are seeing across the UK; we feel that any help that we can give our trade partners will be welcomed. This is the key trading period in what has been a tough year for all the trade and if we can do our bit to support our valued customers then we should take the opportunity to do that,” says Phil Atherton Commercial Director.

motive design forms the foundations of Bizzotto’s brand philosophy. Purveyors of indoor & outdoor designs since 1946, Bizzotto collaborates with partners across the globe to create 1000’s of design led pieces with a commitment to high quality, sustainability and beauty. In 1946, Andrea Bizzotto, an intuitive and innovative businessman, became a purveyor of local handicrafts in the Italian Veneto region. Over the proceeding decades, Bizzotto built upon the resounding success of this collection and travelled all around the world to form relationships with talented artisans and skilled producers to create exclusive interior and outdoor designs. Bizzotto have evolved their brand into a best-selling collection, featuring thousands of pieces of indoor and outdoor furniture, accessories, and seasonal decoration that seek to excite and enlighten homes and gardens. Bizzotto’s collection of home interiors endeavours to create positive interior spaces. This season, their vast collection debuts trends across an array of categories within the

Atmospheric, Contemporary, Nordic, Cosy, Classical, Industrial and Vintage aesthetics. This season’s interior collection celebrates the luxurious divinity of the textures and tones of the natural world, with designs inspired by organic forms and natural hues, intermingled with sensual Italian style. Recycled wood cabinets meet expressive oil painted canvas’ and fauna inspired metal coffee tables, which are complimented by characterful bookcases and sculptural light pieces to create a home space enveloped with personality. Bizzotto embrace the vibrancy of seasonal celebrations in their AW22 catalogue, presenting 1000’s of brand new festive designs. Presented in January 2022, Bizzotto’s Venetian showroom is transformed into a festive emporium. With a vast collection of characterful baubles and tree decorations, from classic glass ball designs to playful novelty pieces, traditional or quirky aesthetics to help curate the perfect Yuletide aesthetic. They also offer a range of styles and sizes of faux pine trees, as well as wreaths and garlands to create a stunning Christmas display. Bizzotto believes that the garden is an inherent element in a harmonious home space. Each year, they present three outdoor furniture collections, “Homemotion”, “Bizzotto Outdoor” and “Yes”, which debut designs across the cost spectrum to achieve Mr Bizzotto’s core principle of creating “a beautiful and original home for everyone”. Their innovative 2022 design led outdoor catalogue, Homemotion, is created with an eye to the future. Homemotion features outdoor furniture with a contemporary aesthetic, created, where possible, with natural, sustainable and recycled materials. Endurance in outdoor design is a key component. In consideration towards an increasingly unpredictable outdoor environment, their Homemotion collection utilises high quality metals, woods and manufacturing techniques to ensure lasting durability. Furthermore, all teak wood used in Bizzotto’s Homemotion collection is sourced exclusively from plantations with regrowth controlled in accordance with reforestation processes. Bizzotto believe that garden spaces are part of the home, and just like the interior, should be furnished with design led pieces. Their signature

Outdoor collection offers designs across a spectrum of aesthetics, a harmonious collision of classic, contemporary and eclectic pieces. Bizzotto’s natural trend triumphs characterful teak wood styles and curvaceous rattan chairs, whilst their classic look debuts elegant polyweave and plush textured sets. Bizzotto intermingle minimalist beauty with practicality to form the signature style of their 2022 outdoor catalogue: functional design. Their signature functional design collections, feature fluid motion extendable and high adjustable tables, stylish stackable chairs and precisely engineered parasols. Bizzotto believes in reactionary design to charge social and environmental change. Corporate social responsibility is a key component to the Bizzotto design brand; through their close collaboration with their valued producers, Bizzotto ensures that their partners achieve exemplary labour standards. Bizzotto’s pieces are designed with product sustainability at their core and thus great attention is paid to the choice of materials chosen for their designs. With a desire to create endurable design pieces, Bizzotto utilise natural and recycled materials, where possible, in their designs. With an understanding of their environmental responsibilities in material procurement, Bizzotto’s wooden designs possess certification in FSC and/or SVLK (Indonesian Legal Wood).

E

ver since its launch in the mid-1980s, Museums & Galleries Ltd has aimed to bring the cream of the world’s art heritage to beautifully made and produced gift stationery and greetings cards for the high street. Over the years the company has explored new product formats, innovated and refined its production techniques, and curated a commercially exciting and visually ravishing suite of fine arts and designbased gift products. Today M&G has the outstanding retail offer in its field covering a wide choice from old master fine art to contemporary fashion design; iconic art heroes to budding contemporary artists and illustrators; anonymous archival discoveries to the most prestigious of fine art museum brands. In its quest to continually introduce exciting new product formats to its stationery and gifts range, Museums & Galleries has become a destination shop for Christmas gifts as well as its fabulously diverse ranges of Christmas cards, boxed cards, wrap, tissue, and bags. A really core strand of M&G’s offer is its beautiful selection of notebooks and journals. New this season are a quartet of beautiful luxury notebooks, part of M&G’s launches from two major British design talents: Sarah Campbell and Catherine Rowe. M&G’s premier format notebooks are A5 in size, 14 Gifts Today

with 160 lined pages, soft-touch cover, foiled or colour paper edging, coloured endpapers, and lay-flat binding. The journals have branded belly bands. Suggested retail price is £9.99 per notebook.

A really core strand of M&G’s offer is its beautiful selection of notebooks and journals. New this season are a quartet of beautiful luxury notebooks, part of M&G’s launches from two major British design talents: Sarah Campbell and Catherine Rowe. Leading designer Sarah Campbell has an amazing portfolio of bright, fresh and beautiful prints dating back 50 years, and is still very much working today (she’s just held a ‘shop-in-shop’ at Anthropologie London). What sets Sarah apart from others is the colour, joy, and commercial appeal in her work. It channels the positivity which appeals to consumers now. Cote D’Azur is Sarah›s most recognisable design. It

features strongly in the M&G collection - on greeting cards, gift wrap, tissue paper, as well as on one of the new luxury notebooks. It is an amazing pattern, both uncompromising and versatile, and in its life has been used on wallpaper, textiles, luggage and even a deckchair! A pattern with a past and a future. The second notebook features a sophisticated and lively seaside pattern, Sandpipers – a joy for bird and beach lovers. Youthful designer Catherine Rowe’s career exploded when she won the Liberty Open Call competition in 2018 (her winning design is still on sale there). Always a retailer favourite in M&G’s card ranges, this year sees two new luxury notebooks from Catherine. She started with a very distinctive scraperboard technique, with bold patterning of florals against wildlife motifs. Drawing on fantasy, heraldic, and traditional styles, her beautiful sense of colour and composition is both contemporary and desirable. Her Lobster notebook is a distinct splash of colour and fun, whilst Bees is beautifully inspirational. There are well over a hundred different titles in M&G’s journal and notebook collection, in various different formats and sizes. The covers feature designs from the UK’s leading museums: the V&A, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Tate, British Library, Transport for London as well as design stars like Matthew Williamson, Cressida Bell, Zandra Rhodes and of course Sarah Campbell, Catherine Rowe, and Helen Ahpornsiri’s Wild Press. Also worth exploring in this collection are BBC Earth, Paddington Bear, The Tiger Who Came to Tea, and Roald Dahl. Co-ordinating with the journals is an array of stationerythemed items: beautiful glass paperweights, pens and pencils (there’s a choice between HB pencil sets and coloured pencils) and organic cotton pencil cases. Folding stationery boxes also make thoughtful gifts for organised friends. Heading up M&G’s collection of purely hedonistic gift items is a stunning collection of bamboo travel mugs featuring a host of classic designs like Alice in Wonderland from the British Library and dinosaurs from the Natural History Museum. Added to the mugs this season are insulated drinks bottles; premium cotton tote bags and roomy zipped pouch bags. The drinks bottles feature designs from four of M&G’s biggest licenses – the V&A, Natural History Museum, British Museum, and Tate Gallery. The prints are bold, colourful, and stylish, with accent colour lids. Double-wall insulated and holding 500 ml, the bottles are suitable for either cold or hot drinks (SRP £18.99), and will be joy to pack in your bag on a day out this summer. The same big four museums star on the coordinating totes and pouches. Made of premium organic cotton canvas, the totes are designed to be strong, stylish, and have real impact (SRP £14.99). The pouches (SRP £10.99) have a black lining and accent colour zip binding. Very flexible to use, they make great gifts. The Natural History Museum tote bag, pouch, and drinks bottle showcase a stunning amethyst specimen print from the museum. This print also features as a facial covering and in M&G’s new sheet gift wraps, gift bags, and tissue collection. To complete your gift selection, it’s worth having a look at M&G’s huge collection of sheet and roll wraps – both everyday and Christmas themed. Sheet wraps come in double-sided and foiled options as well as traditional, and the popular designs come with coordinating gift bag and gift tissue options. There are also bottle-sized gift bags for Christmas.

Heading up M&G’s delectable collection of gift items is a deluxe range of organic cotton tote bags featuring modern art from the Tate; Arts & Crafts design from the V&A; Hokusai’s Cranes from the British Museum; and gem stones from the Natural History Museum. RETAIL INTERVIEW:

Yarnton Home & Garden

Byony Fletcher, Yarnton Marketing & Buying Manager

Maya & Christine

Gifts galore with Yarnton This month Gifts Today had the pleasure to question Yarnton Home & Garden’s Marketing & Buying Manager, Bryony Fletcher. As an established and growing independent garden centre located in Yarnton Home & Garden’s, Oxon which is set within 12 acres they offer their customers a large shop space spanning across 80,000ft², which is roomy and spacious full of many marvellous gifting ideas. Here we find out more about this forward-thinking retailer. Can you tell us about the history of Yarnton? The Garden Centre has been in operation for over 50 years and was originally owned and run by twin brothers, Richard and Nigel. They sold it in 2018 and since then it has been run by a new management team, who have worked tirelessly to keep alive the family and community spirit. How large are the premises you operate from? The site is 12 acres, so the shop is large with 80,000ft² of floor space, so roomy to say the least! 2021 has been a turbulent time for many in the industry, with many 16 Gifts Today

“Inside, there are lifestyle brands such as Bloomingville and Present Time. Because we are a large site, this works well for us. Having the interior brands elevates our offer and means we can support these suppliers in a more meaningful way.”

challenges, how did you overcome challenges that were presented to you throughout this year? Yes, wow what a couple of years it has been! Being independent helped us hugely as we remained agile and changed our business model when needed. During the first lockdown we changed our business to entirely Click and Collect & phone and collect. We also launched an ecommerce platform. This year we have seen a different set of challenges in stock and staff shortages. We have made sure we have ordered early and plenty of it and we have kept a close relationship with key suppliers.

Sian, Cotswold Bakery

What sets your centre apart from your competition? Perhaps that we don’t fear it, we believe it can only be a good thing if the sector is thriving. We have a very clear brand vision, that is very personal to our centre and staff, so we just do what we do as well as we possibly can and hope people enjoy the experience. How does your location work for the business? We are very blessed with a brilliant location, just north of Oxford and south of the Cotswolds. What more could you want! We have Blenheim Palace on our doorstep and fabulous parking. We aim to look after our surrounding demographic and create a great place customers can come and socialise, eat, shop and enjoy the experience. You have a mixed retail space, with Yarnton being the lead brand. How does this work for you and your retail partners? It’s still a work in progress with some concessions, brand partners and Yarnton being the lead brand. We try and work with companies that share our vision and that align with what we are trying to deliver in store. This has worked well for us and them, as our partners add a point of interest to customers and bring in their own footfall. Can you tell us a little about the type of brands who have in-store concessions – how successful is this is to the business? We have a mix of more practical concessions, such as Pets Corner and Maidenhead Aquatics, who operate from their own stores external to the main part of the centre. Inside, there are lifestyle brands such as Bloomingville and Present Time. Because we are a large site, this works well for us. Having the interior brands elevates our offer and means we can support these suppliers in a more meaningful way.

“W and woer try k with compan i e our visio s that share Are you align wit n and that currently trying tho what we are looking to deliver in expand this s t o and looking to re.” introduce new retail partners? We are always open to the right opportunities. How important is the gifting sector to the business? Gifting is so important! The gift of giving is still a complete joy and more relevant than ever, especially in uncertain times. I believe gifting should delight, bring a smile, reassure and be personal. The gift area is a growing section of the business. Being able to browse beautiful gifts adds to the shopping experience. What mix of gifts do you offer? We plan for the big seasonal gifting moments in the year - Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas - to name a few. We then keep a core selection of fabulous finds in the store. Children’s gifting is also a big area for us: the unusual, eco-friendly, and fun. My challenge as a buyer is to find a mix of brilliant gifts across a range of price points. Is there a product category that performs exceptionally well for you within this? Botanical & garden inspired gifts performs very well for us, and bath and body. We have seen a rise in faux bouquets as well. Have you experienced any difference in the way consumers now shop for gifts? I think people are increasingly looking for products with a story. This may be local, sustainable, or hand crafted. I also think people are after the amusing. Card sales are stronger than ever,

indicating that those moments of connection are being sought. What about trends when we look at gift purchases – how do you keep abreast of current trends? For me, Instagram is 100% essential, just to see what is trending, new and popular. I keep an eye on interior design and fashion trends to see how this may impact the gift market. I am still a big advocate of offline fairs; nothing beats seeing things in real life. I also read magazines, both consumer and industry. Do you predict any new trends emerging in 2022? I do think the move towards more ‘conscious’ buying will continue. Covid combined with a global shipping crisis has made people more aware of where products come from and the supply chain involved. People are looking ‘behind’ the product more. I think sustainability will continue as a very strong theme in 2022. I do believe sparking joy and bringing moments of luxury, wellbeing and pleasure will be paramount. There is a strong feeling that we all must live life to the full. Sustainability, carbon footprint and ecofriendly are hot topics at present, how important is this to your business? Incredibly. We were very proud to join up with Lifestyle Garden to be the first garden centre to launch the Dura Ocean garden furniture made entirely from sea plastic. We have also worked very closely with Ocean Plastic Pots, again being their first garden centre stockist. We have invited The Village Refill into our fold, and they have launched a fully refill and Gifts Today 17

sustainable shop within a shop. They also make refill deliveries in the local area in their electric vehicle. Where we can, we always try and offer a plastic-free or sustainable alternative. Our children’s shop, for instance, sells toy trucks made from sugar cane and we have books you can plant and grow seeds from. We challenge ourselves to find these more unusual products and to take a punt on them. We feel we owe this to our customers and to our planet. Admittedly, we still have a long way to go but this is something we are constantly reviewing. What about British Made products, are these something you look to offer within your gifting ranges? Yes, we are big advocates of British made products. We have lots in store across all areas, from food gifting to garden gifting. We have also recently launched a pop-up space for small businesses to use - free of charge - within our Award-Winning retail space, selling to our customers. This has been warmly received by small businesses and customers alike. How important is your website to the business – have you experienced a growth in traffic to the site this year? Our website has become a real digital focal point over the last two years. We have now launched an immersive ecommerce experience and increased our delivery capacity to nationwide. Our website is also a hub to find out information about what is going on in store and up and coming events. Please do visit it. www.yarntonhomegarden.co.uk Do you offer the same products online as you do in-store? We offer a hand-chosen selection rather than the whole range. Partly due to resource and partly just to simplify the end-user experience. What about social media – is this also important to you? Yes, social media is very important to us. We try to create a warm and friendly digital space and we do a lot of communication with customers via social. We have great fun with it. Lastly, do you have any exciting news on the horizon you would like to share with GT readers? In store, you will see our space changing, yet again, this time allowing for an increased area for women’s clothing and shoes. We also hope to expand our Café space, but that plan is under wraps so you will have to visit to see the changes unfold. We are hoping to be out and about again next year, with a stand at Blenheim Palace Flower Show and I am delighted to say, Celia LeesonCox (our Head of Visual Merchandising) and I will be speaking at Spring Fair on the Sunday. ExaClair release new Kenzo Takada stationery gift box ExaClair, the UK supplier of Clairefontaine, has launched a new stationery gift box as part of its Kenzo Takada collection. Named after its brilliant designer who sadly passed away in 2020, the collection is inspired by the luxury home and lifestyle K-3 brand. It incorporates items that carry the Kintsugi mark, which is a tribute to an ancient Japanese art that invites people to repair a broken object by highlighting its scars with gold leaf instead of hiding them. This latest gift box contains a selection of premium stationery products with new designs that feature the K-3 Sakura and Maiko themes. These combine intricate floral imagery in tranquil pastel colours with geometric and organic shapes that feature vibrant reds and pinks. Items within the gift box include two notebooks, one fine art pad of assorted maya papers, one memo pad, 10 correspondence cards and envelopes, a calligraphy glass pen, one 10ml bottle of red and gold glittery Shogun ink and one of the admired scented Jacques Herbin candles; nor inspiration, bleu plenitude, ambre insouciance or brun provenance. Lawrence Savage, Marketing Manager at ExaClair, comments, “This new gift box release further expands upon the concepts behind the original Kenzo Takada stationery range. Recognised globally, Kenzo was one of the most prominent fashion designers of his time and these stylish stationery items pay tribute to his creativity.”

Why are personalised products popular as gifts? The giving of a personalised item is a unique and well thought out gift that shows someone how much you care. Have you seen an increase in the demand for personalised gifts? Since we began in 2004, we have grown year on year as demand for personalised gifts continues to grow. As more customers join us, this demand continues to increase. Did the pandemic drive any growth in this category and if so, do you think this growth will continue into 2022? We certainly saw unprecedented growth and although things did slow down once normality returned, we expect sales to be greater than pre-pandemic. 2021 has been a turbulent year for many in the industry. Did you experience stock issues/delays during this year, and if so, do you expect this to improve during 2022? We have experienced an extremely turbulent year in terms of stock, with suppliers facing manufacturing issues and major shipping delays. Unfortunately, for the foreseeable future, things are not predicted to improve. However, our forward planning means that we can maintain exceptional stock levels. Is there a specific product category where you are seeing an increase in demand for personalisation? Religious occasions, such as Christenings and Holy Communions have been very strong this year, in fact taking us a little by surprise for the huge demand of these products. What about licensed products – how do you select which licenses to add to your ranges? We have held many licenses over the years, some having more success than others. When choosing a license it needs to lend itself to many different products and appeal to more than one sector. What benefits are there to retailers who stock these types of products or offer this service? Licensed products certainly help to draw in the consumer by offering a recognised brand. Will you be looking to add additional products to your range in 2022? We are always on the lookout for new products and will be launching our Spring/Summer ranges at Spring Fair in 2022 Finally, do you have any exciting news on the horizon that you wish to share with GT readers? The launch of our aforementioned new ranges are always exciting, and the return of the Spring Fair is a great opportunity to meet new faces and strengthen old relationships with existing customers after the pandemic. RETAILERS’ PANEL

This month Gifts Today questions two independent gift retailers to find out how 2021 went for their businesses.

Laura Cooper Owner, Handmade Design 2021 was a difficult year for many within the gift industry – how was business for you? Business generally has been good for us during 2021. The first quarter of the year was an obvious struggle with our bricks and mortar shop being closed but we remained positive until we were able to reopen again in April. Over the summer, we benefitted greatly from people holidaying in the UK as opposed to going overseas which meant we had one of our best summers. Did you experience a difference in the way your customers shopped for gifts? The main shift I’ve noticed is that people have felt more inclined to treat themselves than usual. After a tough 12 months or so this is totally understandable - we have all needed a little pick me up! I have also noticed more people making the change to supporting small, local businesses. This was something that they may have had to do during the pandemic but is now part of their everyday life. Do you feel that these might stay during 2022? I think 2022 will see further changes to customers buying habits but I feel confident people will continue to support their local businesses as they want to see where they live thrive. Was there a particular gift instore or on your website that can be hailed a hero for you, or perhaps a product category that performed exceptionally well, for example, candles, in home gifts, personalised gifts? Our standout product throughout 2021 would have to be our Lavender Positive Pocket Pillows. They were especially popular when we first began stocking them during lockdown and have continued to be a best seller for us since reopening. They have been designed to be calming and help with anxiety – making them an ideal little gift over recent months. If you have a website – have you noticed an increase in traffic to your site? We have definitely noticed an increase in the number of people visiting our website, especially during the months our bricks and mortar shop was closed. Overall the traffic to our website has been higher than previous years and continue to increase with the help of social media and other avenues. 22 Gifts Today

Sophie Grant The Gift Box - Chester 2021 was a difficult year for many within the gift industry – how was business for you? I actually have had a very busy year, excluding the lockdowns (which were still busy with click and collect, but nowhere near as busy as if the shop was open as normal) I have greatly increased the gift offering in store and so have really seen an increase in sales. Did you experience a difference in the way your customers shopped for gifts? Not really a difference just a lot more sales. Our customers seemed so pleased to be allowed to shop in store again once we were allowed to reopen. Do you feel that these might stay during 2022? I hope so ! Was there a particular gift instore or on your website that can be hailed a hero for you, or perhaps a product category that performed exceptionally well, for example, candles, in home gifts, personalised gifts? Jellycat continues to be one of my best-selling lines. My customers just can’t get enough of them, and they continue to bring out new designs so frequently that it really keeps them fresh and relevant. If you have a website – have you noticed an increase in traffic to your site? There was during lockdown but this has reduced since my store re opened. I think my customers love the in-store experience and being able to handle and see the products.

Coffee Break Gifts Today takes a break with Enesco’s Marketing & Product Director, Helen Cotrill. Firstly, how is everything with everyone at Enesco? Everyone is good thank you, we are extremely busy and our warehouse team all working hard, unloading never ending containers and then turning the stock around. We are so lucky to have the team we have. 2021 was a turbulent year for many, did you experience any stock issues or delays?

Add a bit of

magic

Enesco adds Manga-style characters into its growing Harry Potter charm figurine collection Following on from its wonderfully whimsical Harry Potter charm figurines inspired by the beloved characters from the Wizarding World, Enesco in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products is proud to present a simply magical new addition of must-have collectables for all Wizarding World fans. Perfect for witches, wizards and Muggles, each figurine is brought to life using the hugely popular Japanese ‘Manga’ style. With an enlarged head, over exaggerated eyes and dainty features across the nose and mouth area, the Harry Potter charm figurines showcase Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Draco Malfoy, and Professor Snape as fans have never seen them before. Clutching their wands, spell books or enchanted brooms as if ready to make some magic, each cast stone figurine stands on a coloured base denoting their house at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry, Hermione, and Ron are a top of a red base representing Gryffindor – the house which is home to brave and chivalrous characters at Hogwarts. Conversely, both Dranco Malfoy and Professor Snape stand on green bases - the colour of Slytherin House, signifying ambition, and cunningness. With each figure measuring 13.0cm, the new manga-style Harry Potter charm figurines retail with a SRP of £29.95 each and are individually packaged in a branded gift box. The assortment will make a brilliant gift for fans of the franchise and a must have for any Wizarding World collector.

Yes, like everyone who imports, it has been an extremely difficult year for our sourcing departments globally. Quality is so important to us that we have focused on ensuring that speed does not affect quality, which has resulted in slightly longer delays in some cases. Covid is still wreaking havoc across China, and I believe we will see delays well into 2022. We did make the decision to airfreight some stock in November and detailed planning is key to our success in 2022. Are you expecting 2022 to run smoothly for the business? It is highly unlikely, however as a company, we have proven that we can adapt and handle pretty much anything! You hold many great licensed product ranges, how important are these to your business? Licensed product is what makes us unique, our product collections are exclusive to Enesco, you cannot source them elsewhere. We continue to sign up new licenses and expand our formats. We are so excited about 2022/23, watch this space! What makes a licensed product popular with the consumer? I believe it is a combination of the security of brand recognition and the quality guarantee that a licensed product offers. Each product must be approved by the licensor and manufactured in approved factories; all of this adds value. What about collectibles, how do this position themselves within your product ranges? Anything can be a collectible, if you love something or a certain brand and have multiple items it’s a collection. It used to be that the term ‘collectibles’ related only to a certain type of product however in recent years this has changed. We have regular artist events, both in person (pre covid)

and virtually with a huge response, some collectors queuing for over 10 hours to have a Jim Shore piece signed. We also have people who buy multiple pieces of Willow Tree, which is defined as sentiment driven gift. Personally, I collect gin bottles but must admit to a little Suess obsession too! Do you currently have a hero range that is currently trending? It would have to be Disney Traditions by Jim Shore; we cannot keep it in stock. Every launch we are amazed at the design and craftsmanship of each piece. Have you noticed any particular shift in buying behaviour when we look at consumers who are seeking gifts? The biggest shift would be in their chosen retailer, online has seen a huge increase during the pandemic and has opened this channel up to a whole new demographic. Retailers who offer both a brick and mortar and an online option are going to be the winner ultimately, however we are a nation of shoppers and will head back to the high street in due course. We do also see that people are being kinder to themselves, self-purchase is a large sector, spending more time at home, everyone wants lovely ‘things’ around them. What type of support do you offer your retailers? We have a fully employed sales team in the UK, Germany, and Holland, dedicated to servicing our customers. The website is available 24/7 to place orders, check stock or just check on their account status. We do a lot of value-added promotions throughout the year. We also supply point of sale to support new and evergreen collections. On top of this we offer excellent terms, a low minimum order value, allowing our customers to order across all our collections and quick delivery. Finally, do you have any exciting plans on the horizon that you would like to share with Gifts Today readers? It feels like such an exciting time here at Enesco. 2022 will see the launch of our own plush collection, Kalidou. We are also relaunching Peanuts by Jim Shore, due to high demand for this property. You will see Looney Tunes designs in both Jim Shore and Britto. There are many other things in the pipeline which will be announced in due course. We cannot wait to see our retailers again at the early shows, we will be at Spring Fair and Ambiente. Gifts Today 25

Interview Best Kept Secrets

The secret

to scent Gifts Today caught up with Best Kept Secrets Managing Director, Vanessa Curry to delve a little deeper into this truly scented company. You are a family run business, when did you launch your first product to market? Who doesn’t love cake! In June 2021 we celebrated our 25th birthday. Best Kept Secrets was founded by Alan and Denise Edwards in June 1996, when they left their corporate jobs and decided to run a business of their own. The first products were wax face mask, you must remember in those days that The Phantom of the Opera was huge. Business was going ok and growing year on year. Then disaster struck. At the time Best Kept Secrets manufacturing unit was on an industrial farm. In 2001 the devastating news that many farms were subjected to Foot & Mouth disease. Nothing was allowed in or out and pretty much our whole business stopped. We were not allowed to send any goods out of the farm. During this time Denise decided to manufacture scented candles in tins and here was born the Seriously Scented range. Only 6 to begin with, unlike the 50 different fragrances we have today. 2021 was such a turbulent time for many in the industry, did you experience any particular difficulties and if so, how did you overcome these? What wasn’t hard about 2021! Business continued to be strong with a huge amount of online orders but our main priority was keeping our staff safe. We worked in two separate teams,

had one way systems, temperatures checks and big screens were installed so we work face to face, but with reduced risk. Our staff shone through again. The schools were closed and lots of us were juggling home life, kids and work. But with their flexible attitude we managed to maintain a full compliment of staff and orders continued to be processed. Planning ahead was essential. All components of a candle were in short supply so we needed to plan ahead and order far earlier than we would normally. Pretty much we’ve managed to keep most lines in manufacture. How do you create your current ranges and keep abreast of consumer trends? Our retailers are great at telling us what they want, after all they are face to face with the public. So many products are born from customer feedback. One reason for attending trade shows is to keep the relationships going so we can find out what’s heading our way next. Fragrance houses are also excellent at forecasting new trends and we work closely with them to launch new fragrances that are bang on trend. You create your range using only premium locally sourced supplies & use traditional production methods with hand finishing on your products – does this mean premium price? Our candles are manufactured in the pretty market town of Morpeth, Northumberland. All hand made by our master candle makers. The majority of our ingredients comes from the UK and Europe. Rarely do we import from the far east. We pride ourselves on top quality fragranced products so buying from UK companies we achieve a better quality. A better standard. Our retailers tell us that candles and gifts

28 Gifts Today

under the £10 price point are optimum. So that’s what do! The majority of our candles have an RRP of under £10. Great value for money and an easy present. You’re not just known for your beautiful array of tin candles, can you tell us about other products that you produce within the scented gift sector? When the Seriously Scented range was started, selling just six different types of candles way back in the early 2000’s, today we have 50 different fragrances in our portfolio. From fresh and fruity, floral to the heavier more fine fragrances. There really is a fragrance to suit all tastes. Just Because candles have been in production since 2017 and I’m delighted to say we have rebranded them and they look fabulous! An extension to this range is the introduction of the brand new Just Because Three lites. The top six selling lines are now available in not only a candle tin but a pretty gift box, with three large tea lights in different fragrances. Our sparkly diffuser lines are hugely popular. Available in two sizes – 100ml and 50ml. Again, we have met the £10 price point with the 50ml diffuser retailing at £9.99. Our handmade natural soaps are also a real treat. Beautifully handmade and wrapped in mulberry papers. There are no nasties in our soaps with all being suitable for Vegetarians and almost all for Vegans. What about the future, are there any exciting plans on the horizon you would like to share with GT readers? We can’t wait for January. Launching our new Just Because candles and Three Lite gift boxes. In February we are expanding into new premises. A lovely new manufacturing unit…. It won’t be long until it’s covered in wax and sparkly glitter! And then its trade show time again. Heading off the Spring Fair in early February. Hall 4 Stand 4B36.

Trade talk

Gifts Today spoke to a number of the industry’s finest taking looking back at 2021 and moving forward into 2022.

Paul Hooker

Commercial Director – Joe Davies How has 2021 been for your business? 2021 has certainly been a year of recovery for Joe Davies following the lockdowns of 2020 and missing the Spring Fair at the beginning of the year. Our customers, staff and suppliers have amazed us with their resilience, understanding and support. There has been a real sense of all in it together. Luckily with such a large spread of product and our ‘Little & Often’ order system we have managed to keep plenty of stock on our customer’s shelves and we have had a very strong end to the year so far.

With it being such a turbulent year, did you experience any particular challenges and if so how did you overcome these? From a business perspective perhaps the biggest challenge of the year has been around stock. Factories have had longer lead times due to staffing and material shortages, add to this the well-publicised difficulties with shipping. Fortunately, we placed big orders with suppliers early and followed up our shipments all the way through to delivery. It certainly has been nailbiting stuff, but most shipments made it through. The understanding and support of our customers has been exceptional.

What about the year ahead – do you have any exciting announcements you would like to share with GT readers? With travel to China still off the agenda the whole team have worked incredibly hard to bring exciting new developments to our range for Spring 2022 and there will be some very special introductions at Spring Fair – watch this space! 32 Gifts Today

Sophie Bylina

Relationship Manager, Museums & Galleries How has 2021 been for your business? 2021 has been an interesting year; it has had its challenges with lockdowns, shipping and staff having to isolate. However, it has also been an opportunity for us to review our systems, to ensure that we maintain the high stock levels that we always have, and to find new ways to maintain them at that level.

With it being such a turbulent year, did you experience any particular challenges and if so how did you overcome these? Like most businesses, shipping has been one our biggest challenges this year. Container shortages followed by the shortages of HGV drivers meant that dates were constantly changing. We had to ensure that we were ahead of it by ensuring we had enough stock ahead of the peak seasons.

What about the year ahead – do you have any exciting announcements you would like to share with GT readers? We have lots of exciting new things for 2022, all of which will be on display at Spring Fair. Come and visit our stand and see for yourself, Hall 3, 3L30-M30!!

Mark Wilson

Managing Director, Widdop How has 2021 been for your business? Challenging, frustrating, demanding and most other negative adjectives that you would like to choose. Yet despite this we expect to end the year ahead of our 2019 sales, a fantastic achievement that is testimony to the agility and hard work of our customers, staff and suppliers.

With it being such a turbulent year, did you experience any particular challenges and if so how did you overcome these? Q1 Brexit created some unique challenges that were largely overcome by IT development, disruption was experienced initially but by April we had adapted our IT systems to cope with the new regulations. In Q1 we all experienced a retail lockdown for most of our customers who swiftly repositioned themselves online thus mitigating lost high street sales. Q2/3 was dominated by the huge increase in container pricing and factory price increases which of course impacted our costing and pricing. Q4 Witnessed the perfect storm with the added complication of driver shortages creating more delays and cost increases. In all, the most challenging year that I have known after 40 years in business has resulted us needing to restructure our ranges (certain products that were lower value and more bulky are no longer economically viable to sell) and adapt our offering to the new normal.

What about the year ahead – do you have any exciting announcements you would like to share with Gifts Today readers? January sees the launch of SS22 and Xmas 22 range at our showrooms in Oldham, where we will be launching over 1000 new products, all existing and prospective customers are welcome but we advise booking to avoid disappointment. We are also very excited to be exhibiting at Spring Fair in February and look forward to seeing many of our customers face to face again for the first time in two years. We will also launching a new product promotional campaign each month of the year to support our customers growth. Overall, we will seek to add more value to our range with design and innovation.

Lawrence Savage

UK Marketing Manager, Execlair Ltd How has 2021 been for your business? Although there have been many obstacles during the past 12-18 months, we’ve seen steady progress since the lockdown periods. With an increasing number of people working from home and spending more time participating in family activities, we initially experienced a sizable uptake across our art and crafting brands, such as our Décopatch and Clairefontaine origami ranges. There’s also been a huge shift in journaling with more people conscious of boosting personal mental health and well-being. This has driven popularity in our premium Clairefontaine notebooks and Rhodia Goalbooks.

This includes new extensions to our popular Kenzo Takada, La Vie En Vosges and Neo Deco stationery collections. Additionally, with the continued rise in demand for environmentally friendly products, we’ll be expanding our range of Jeans & Cocoa notebooks. These are made by combining either recycled denim or discarded cocoa shells with FSC Certified, sustainably sourced wood fibres to make the covers. They also feature the iconic super-smooth, 90gsm brushed vellum satin-finish Clairefontaine paper that’s loved by pen fans globally.

With it being such a turbulent year, did you experience any particular challenges and if so how did you overcome these? Both the pandemic and Brexit have given us opportunities to review and enhance our operations as a whole. The business has become much more dynamic in relation to order processing and we developed a greater flexibility in our distribution logistics, which has helped us to accommodate the increasingly varied customer delivery requirements.

What about the year ahead – do you have any exciting announcements you would like to share with GT readers? We’re gearing up to launch a wide selection of new and exciting products across all of our brands for 2022.

Original culinary gift ideas at Christmasworld

hocolate, biscuits, sweets, tea, and liqueurs not only sweeten the holiday season, but also make wonderful gifts all year round and are becoming increasingly original. What’s new here will be presented at Christmasworld from 28 January to 1 February 2022 with Christmas Delights in a separate area in an atmospheric Christmas market setting. The Christmas Delights product area offers new gift ideas that appeal to all the senses. It showcases seasonal delicacies and drinks that are in high demand as attractive take-away items for the whole year. These exhibitors present themselves in Hall 12.0 in wooden huts and invite visitors to discover and try their products. Among the exhibitors are Bayernwald Früchteverwertung, Freude am Genuss, RCB Vertriebs und Marketinggesellschaft, Royal Nature, Salon Spezerei Ana Ortega, and Schusters Spezialitäten. “Culinary gifts perfectly enrich our festive decorating offer, because they are not only a nice gift for friends and family at Christmas time. Trade buyers get a bundle of fresh impulses for their product ranges here”, says Eva Olbrich, Director, Christmasworld, Messe Frankfurt Exhibition GmbH. Seeing, feeling and often smelling gift type products firsthand is imperative for gauging how consumers will react to stock on the shelves – and this is the first opportunity for many industry buyers to do this in over two years. As well as numerous favourite festive brands attending, the 2022 show welcomes some new names to the table too, including one of the UK’s leading textile suppliers, Portfolio Home. This exciting company is ready to bring its exciting range of festive throws, cushions, bed linen and more to Harrogate for the very first time in its 50-year history. Paul Callan, their managing director, commented: “We’re really looking forward to Harrogate Christmas & Gift Fair. We have a wide range of products to showcase to retailers which includes Christmas specific products but also autumnal and year-round products for increased sales. It will be wonderful to be out and about again, mixing, networking and connecting with so many buyers.” Portfolio Home will be showcasing a range of goods which add additional basket-value for retailers which are all geared towards the ‘golden quarter’ retail Christmas sales where traditionally, demand is high. The products on display feature familiar faces for Christmas such as Santa Claus,

Rudolf and Gingerbread men, but also some new trends such as Gonks and Snowy Penguins. Other new names for 2022 include Arora Design with distinctly different giftware designed and created in the UK by talented British artists; Gibson Plus with a range of signs, badges and decorations; Wikholmform – one of Scandinavia’s leading wholesales to florist and interior design stores and The English Soap Company with finely fragranced gift sets and gift boxes. Visitors and buyers really will be spoiled for choice at the show with many favourite returning exhibitors launching interesting and innovative new product ranges designed to lure consumers in-store. One such company is leading importer of artificial flowers, potted arrangements, trees and Christmas decorations for over 30 years – Florelle. The company has worked hard to bring fresh ideas and value to money to the show – which the team believes is more important now than ever before. It will be showing is new range of flower bunches, focussing firmly on price points and a Christmas 2022 display of beautiful wreaths, garlands and Christmas flowers. In addition its burgeoning autumn range for September has been extended.
