ABOUT THE BOOK

Encoder is a machine or software that converts informations from one specific format to another format. Because the process of my design, I prefer to design small - scale space about one person or two people first, and I composed them together. I think this method very like write computer codes, I write a program code and compose them to be a software. So I want to use “Spatial Encoder to be my book’s title.

Spatial

encoder

I found something interesing in this imagine. It is a overlooking view. People walk on the street but you can’t see people’s activies. But throught the light, the shadow can reflect people’s activies.

03

Can we design an architecture in the site and make that site something different ?

04 spatial encoder

05

notation of encoder In the city or our live space now, every space lost their order and dyscontrolled. But in the seemingly random arrangrment, there’s a hidden order. I want to notate this status and make people know how do I see this world. This world is very dynamic. Throught the encoder, we can encode these space and make people feel the different.

There’re some points in this square, we can’t know what these points mean. But after encoding, the picture was changed, we can see the poins that means people and shadow. So I want to focus my concept on the process of encoding.

Mood I’ve came up two ways about people’s encoding process. One is mood, the other is sense of scale. And I drew some space diagram, I want to design a way or route that make people change their feeling constanly. Calm

But nothing means no intersection between people, something means intersection of people’s activies. The purpose of the encoder is to rearrange both things to create the most appropriate the site’s code.

I designed it for a semi-underground form, and there’s a floor on it. I want to make the plan look like initial imagine, People walk on here, they just see the points on it, people feel the different of upstairs and downstairs. Before encoding, people just walk, After encoding people can thought many interesting space experiences.

People can chat with others under the tree.

Cross the entrance, enter the personal space.

In the gallery, sense of scale will be changed by tall building.

14 spatial encoder

In computer, 1 means something. In my design, 1 means the intersection of people. I designed some public space in this architecture. There is a night market near this site, so people need a relax place. People can buy something eat and go to here, eating, chatting, relaxing.... Many interesting activies can happen here.

15

About the model (1/200), you could find out a lot of details of this model. These details included people’s activies, plant, architecture. You could imagine when you walk into this model, Your feeling is comfortable and lightness. I want to create an environment when people walk from beginning to end that people could feel the process of encoding.

Go down the stairs, feel the personal space.

SEQUENCE Sequence, it could be continuous or similar. In inital image, it looks like a long corridor, and exetend to somewhere. Throught those pillars, it’s not point to point. It’s a continuous corridor and it is also a sequence, too.

Can we extend the sequence

of space to make people active in a bandy, linear space ?

21

notation of sEQUENCE I want to describe a ‘status’. There are three layers in the notation, they mean three different sequence. People live in different sequence, and they have different experiences. I imagine different space as different scenes. People thought the sequence can experience the change of feeling.

22

sEQUENCE

23

02. SEQUENCE Sequence, it can refer to a combination of space, or it can refer to people's activities. The space where we live in is all point-to-point, for example : home - school - studio. Point-to-point space loses a lot of coherent space experience. We can extend the sequence of space to make people live in a bandy, linear space .

Sidewalk

In a way, this imagine looks like a whole space. There is a space about indoor and outdoor and people can throught the sequence from everywhere. Althought it’s a sequence, but it doesn’t have a clear edge. I want to describle an environment where people can shuttle around this place.

SPACE In people’s life or our life, sequence can be two parts. One is space, in the same situation , people throught different spatial sequence. For example: sequence of home, sequence of work, sequence of leisure... Another part is schedule, in a whole day, people’s activies become a sequence, too. Different people throught different sequence of activies.

About the site, I choose Tamsui old street, this place included a lot of different functional place. Park, temple, road... I think here is an interesting site and combined my concept. I want to link these six points and create a special sequence that belongs here.

Tamsui Fu-yo temple is next to Tamsui river, I want to link both of them together. So I use the square in front of the temple to make this design. I use some long mass and outdoor corridor to respond this site and connect them together. About how to connect the temple, because there’s a slope behind the temple so I designed two stairs to make people get into the architecture. Crossing the road, people can feel the feel of shuttling sequence and arrive the riverbank from temple.

30

sEQUENCE

Throught the outdoor corridor, people can shuttle between indoor and outdoor, and there’s is a long corridor from Fu-Yo temple to Tamsui river, Expect lead people walk, it also can guide people's sight to the river view.

03.

fluidity In this imagine, it just not has black and white colors. It also has the medium color - gray. Gray, along with black and white, and they form a fluidity pattern.

32

fluidity

Is fluidity unvisible ?

Can we make it visible ?

35

Hello ! Stay ~ Stay ~ Hello!

36

fluidity

notation of fluidity I think when people in an architecture or a space, people have a variety of activies. About my notation, I want to describe a situation, this situation is a moment. People get into the architecture, first they stay at leisure place, second they stay at outdoor place. This process becomes a fludity pattern.

37

03. Fluidity Activity is static and dynamic. Little by little in the space slowly blended. People's emotions can also be affected by these activities. Flowing like water through out of space.

Different spaces, different activities, these space activities have their own space. When people through each space, people’s tracks will string each space. When these tracks become specific objects, it has a special pattern of fluidity.

Therefore, I creat several types of static space and dynamic space. Thought these space, the movement could allow you to feel or get the interesting experiences.

Lie down and rest here for a longer journey.

Performance, bring people happy emotions.

Appreciate and absorb the culture of this place.

Interaction, creating memories that belong to this place

Look out and bring the scenery into your eyes

Playful, leisure space for old and young.

38

fluidity

Static activity is like a pigment in this imagine, like a point - a point. From these points to affect the whole space and dynamic activies is like water flowing anywhere.

I think people have a lot of activies in a space. Static activies are points, It’s like the center of blending, activies and moving are like dynamic track, these tracks become a fluid pattern.

My site is located at Tamsui old street and there’s a park near it. So I want to create a route and outdoor space to connect the park. People can shuttle around randomly.

fluidity

41

Take advantage of dynamic activity's line Link each space together Connected to a consistency space.

This park let people relax a few moments. There’s a slope that can make people walk to Tamsui old street.

42

fluidity

Stand on the high floor. People can see the beautiful views.

Outdoor space make people interactive with environment.

A public space face to the yard, make people stay here. Entrance make people enter this architecture more easier.

43

44

fluidity

Throught the models, you could see the floors and walls are like a fludity pattern. When people shuttle in this building, you can see the flutity pattern consists of whole builing. And this status means ‘fludity’, also make it visible, too.

45

46

slit

slit

04.

47

Slit is like a window scape, the images which people seeing are different. Sometimes different images are the same thing. Through the slits, we can only see what is presented on the surface. But there's a wider world behind it. We can't judge things only through what we see, but to think about it in many ways.

48

slit

I can see something inside. I watch the view on the slit.

It looks interesting in this slit~

I can go to the other side throught the slit.

Maybe there’s something interesting up there...

I’m playing the music now. Does anyone hear me?

50

slit

notation of slit Slit is a small thing between two objects, it can make people see the thing behind the surface. In this notation, there are a lot of different slits. Every slits have different functions. People can hear the sound, see other people... It’s a complicated system and interesting space.

51

04. SLIT

In the future, global average temperature grow up constanly. So every countries need to find the solutions to response this situation.

Environment

response

Taipei

Migrate to underground Because taipei is a large city, and rising sea levels make many people need to move Taiwan doesn't have much land, so moving underground is the fastest way.

ENTRANCE

Prevent water People move to live in the underground, and as an entrance for the exchange of supplies Water must be stopped by entrance.

2019

2050

In 2050, global sea levels are expected to rise by 5m. Taipei has many low-rise areas that will be submerged.

Obtain the light Sunlight is an important element to people and moving to life in the underground also requires light. So through the slits, light can shine under the ground.

52

slit

Slit can play a lot of characters. For example: sound shuttle sight... And throughout the design, I hope these different features can be done to support people’s important functions of life.

53

I took the photo about my concept model, and I named different types of people’s situation. You could feel the feeing of the model and I want to convey that slit is not just a slit, it can create a lot of interesting things.

Comfort

Surround

Provides a comfortable atmosphere where people can stay here.

The faint light fell from the sky to shine on the floor. Make people gather and surround .

54

Shuttle Shuttle the slit. Look to the distance. The fluidity of space is dynamic.

57

Slit has many scales, from large to small scale, which deeply affect people's lives.

58

slit

Light can enter the interior of the building through slits, while also creating many different space atmospheres.

About the model, slit play a lot of character. It can make people live more comfortable.

Throught these slits, they can create a new types of living in the underground.

The joy of design is not how beautiful the shape. But the process of compose space together.
