WORLD SIGHT DAY OCT 13, 2016
WORLD SIGHT DAY OCT 13, 2016
Since 1988, Lions World Sight Day has raised awareness about the importance of eye health and the need for quality eye care services for all.
On this special day of service, Lions clubs around the world conduct sight-related projects including: vision screenings, eyeglass donations, restorative surgeries, eye health education programs, and the donation of assistive devices to those with vision impairment.
Lions World Sight Day is traditionally held in the month of October. This year, Lions are encouraged to organize their Lions World Sight Day activities in conjunction with the Lions World Wide Week of Service in Sight.
CLUB EVENTS
CLUB EVENTS FIRST MEETING OF REGION 1 Region (1) Chairperson Lion Jacqueline Foster, held her first region meeting on Sunday, 11th September 2016, in the "bread basket" parish of St. Elizabeth, hosted by the Lions Club of South St. Elizabeth.
3
Lion Jacqueline chaired a power packed meeting and Lion representations of the region were sated with vital Lions informational tools to steer the clubs into a successful year. There were District Officers who make presentations on the various goals of the District and Lions International.
The Guest Speaker was none other than Her Excellency, The Hon. Lion Aloun Assamba, Ex-High Commissioner to the UK. Lion Aloun was assigned as High Commissioner for four (4) years in London and only recently demitted office upon the change of Government. Lion Aloun spoke about her experience in London during the four years, the need for growth and related stories on how her responsibilities and experience as a Lion impacted her work. She also told the group how Jamaica benefited (M$2.5) from her interaction/encounter with powerful persons e.g. the Queen of England. Special mention was made by Lion Aloun of "Worldwide Week of Blindness", which will be celebrated October 10-16, 2016.
Lions were implored to
commission the service projects and get special recognition for them.
Guest
Speaker Lion Aloun spoke also about the recent mass Deportation of Jamaicans from the UK and the non-regularization of their legal status. Ambassador Aloun
In closing, Lion Aloun encouraged the members to attend the Lions 100
Centennial Convention in Chicago for the experience and enjoyment. She then emphasized that she will be available toAmbassador continue Aloun her service in Lionism.
One of the many highlights also of the meeting, was the spirited fashion segment "Protocol on Lions' Attire" which was led by our vivacious Lion Nora "Beverley" Francis, MJF. This area saw Lions modelling suitable clothing as a reminder and/or to educate Lions on what to wear to meetings and functions. The region meeting ended on a high note for all the attendees.
LIONS & LEOS OF BARBADOS MARCH FOF PEACE In recognition of International Day of Peace on September 21, the Lions and Leos of Barbados, partnered with the Universal Peace Federation, (an agency with consultative status with the United Nations) as they embraced the international theme, “A Celebration of Peace. 4
The Peace Walk was an extension of their work in bringing the message of peace to the community. LIONS represent Liberty Intelligence Our Nation’s Safety. We are a strong, collective voice to inform and influence issues that impact our community. We are an advocate for peace. How can Lions Clubs respond? Lions are very hands on. We engage in sustainable projects that promote skills for life – etiquette and cooking classes for young people, literacy programs, rabbit rearing projects, working closely with camps and the vulnerable groups in society such as children and the elderly. We believe that Education is the key to eradicate the tendencies of violence and conflicts. Lions and Leos as community builders must promote the light of peace, justice, responsibility and rational human behaviour through education. Education is the true medicine of the mind. If all of young people embrace education at a serious level, it is an opportunity for them to create a better world and a safer environment. As Lions, we focus on literacy programs as part of our community goals. We engage in reading programs, provide infrastructure for library facilities, donate books to schools, provide early childhood education materials and always recognize International Literacy day as an important initiative on our Calendar of activities. Violence and conflicts can destroy the morale fabric of our society even though it appears to be a small percentage of persons engaging in negative behaviour. However, there are excellent programs such as the Leo Clubs, Key Club, Rotaract and other community service youth organizations to channel young people in positive activities. The Leo Club Program, a project of the Lions Club has been in Barbados for 45 years. Therefore, they have been promoting sustainable activities (training as young community leaders, recycling programs, engage in public speaking, team building exercise, organizing youth forum to covering topical issues such as social media, technology, peer pressure, violence in the schools) for young people for over 4 decades. There needs to be a greater call for Volunteerism and more mandatory programs in the school environment so that their energies and ideas can be reinforced and strengthened through such initiatives. The opportunities are there to engage in positive activities however some of the behavioural issues are sometimes linked to our social environment. This year, Lions will be celebrating 100 years of service and one of our core areas is the Youth; therefore we will continue to create sustainable opportunities for young people. We are heartened to be partner with the Universal Peace Federation. We want to make peace possible in our homes, work and every day life style habits. We recognize that changing the universe is not an easy task but a thousand mile journey, starts with a single step, a Walk for Peace. A small initiative may influence someone along our journey today. The peace banner was signed by 1st Vice District Governor, Lion Sherwin Greenidge MJF, Region Chairperson, Lion Leroi Hinds, Zone Chairperson, Lion Shonda Forde MJF, Past Region Chairperson, Lion Maureen Graham PMJF and other Lions and Leos.
Our participation in the walk demonstrated our
commitment to peace building initiatives and that a time will come where there will be no conflicts, hostilities, violence but 5
rather we are all working together to make peace possible in our homes, work and every day life style habits.
YOUTH OUTREACH Lions International dedicated the Week August 8 – 14 as Worldwide Week of Service dedicated to mentoring, empowering and engaging youth through community service. This international event was designed to inspire the next generation of volunteers and help us reach our Centennial Service Challenge goal of serving 100+ million people. The Lions and Leos of Castries joined the Piton Soufriere Lions, on August 13, 2016, in a youth mentoring activity. The activity was held in the village of Canaries where a group of 30 young individuals ranging from age 9 – 15 were given an insight into volunteerism. The sessions covered the importance of volunteering as well as the benefits to be derived both by individuals and the community. The members of the Leo club shared the role that the Leo Club plays in volunteering in community as well as their experiences being in such an organization. The culmination of the session saw the participants being given a cup and a seed. The cup is to be used to plant the seed and watch it germinate. Each participant is to bring the planted seed to the community nurse where they will monitor the progress. The germination of the seed is synonymous to the seed of volunteerism that was planted today. The Lions and Leos of Castries say thank you to the Soufriere Piton Lions and the Canaries Community Nurse, for allowing us to partner in this activity. We look forward to returning to the community to see the results of the planted seeds.
LIONS MENTORING LEOS IN SERVICE The Castries Lions used this opportunity to mentor our Leos and engaged them in a service activity. On Sunday, August 14 the Castries Leos and their prospective Leos joined with their parent club and treated the patients at the Mental Wellness Institution. This institution was chosen because it is one that is usually forgotten by the general public. The treat was sponsored by the Lions and the Leos spent time serving and engaging the patients. It was a very rewarding activity and it is hoped that this engendered in our Leos the spirit of giving back to those less fortunate. (Note: because of patient privacy we are not able to show the Leos serving and interacting with the patients) Thanks to the management and staff of the Wellness Center for allowing us the opportunity to undertake this activity. Thanks to the Lions who prepared the snacks and to the Leos for giving us the opportunity to mentor them.
CLARENDON LEO CLUB CONDUCTS BEACH CLEANUP Equipped with gloves, rakes, data cards and garbage bags, some 40 volunteers descended upon a small, secluded beach along the 6
Rocky Point Port Road in Clarendon last Saturday to participate in the 31 st Annual International Coastal Cleanup Day that was coordinated by the Leo Club of Clarendon. Among the groups which participated were members of the community, the Lions Club of Clarendon, Clarendon Youth Council, May Pen Police Youth Club, Hayes Police Youth Club and Staines Early Childhood and Preparatory School.
Household items, shoes, plastics of all kind, glass bottles, styrofoam containers and personal care items were among some of the most common pieces of trash that were picked up by the volunteers. “International Coastal Cleanup Day is a major calendar event for us because we are very passionate about environmental preservation. It was appalling to see the condition that this coastal area was in, so we decided to take a step outside of our comfort zone to coordinate our own cleanup instead of assisting other organizations as we would normally do. This was made possible through guidance and funding from the Jamaica Environment Trust” said president, Tissona Ormsby.
Ms. Ormsby added that she was pleased with the turnout and the results of the cleanup. “Initially, we were expecting only 25 volunteers to show up, but we nearly doubled our expectations. We have transformed this area into an oasis thanks to the volunteers who put their hands, heart and sweat into keeping our coast clean,” she said.
Echoing similar sentiments, volunteer Taralace Farquhar expressed joy after seeing the transformation of the coastline. “I joined this beach cleanup because it is close to home and I like being involved in activities that will benefit society. It was certainly satisfying to see the natural beauty of the beach and port after majority of the garbage was removed,” she said.
International Coastal Cleanup Day has been coordinated globally by the Ocean Conservancy since 1985 and locally by the Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) since 2008. It is the largest one-day volunteer event in the world and is also used to educate persons about where our waste goes, and its impact on the environment.

Leadership Development Assessing Your Club’s Readiness for Change It is said that the only constant in life is change, and Lions clubs are no exception. There are many exciting changes underway in clubs around the world, but no matter how positive, change can be a stressful experience. That is why, before undertaking any major change initiative, leaders should assess a club’s readiness for change. In this webinar, we explore what a change readiness assessment is and why your club should conduct one before any major change initiatives. We’ll also provide you with some too ls for assessing readiness for change, as well as tips on how to use them. MILESTONES Sincere condolences to the Lions club of St Thomas East and the family of the late Lion Roy Hendricks. The district mourns with the Lions of St Thomas East at this time of sorrow as we bid farewell to one whose pioneering efforts brought us to where we are today. No tribute can be too effusive for those who faced the great unknown as founders of our various clubs. As we say the last sad farewell to this Charter member we should ensure him a lasting memory by seeking to grow the club he helped to start these decades ago. Our founders deserve no less. Rest in Peace Lion Roy. Of you it can truly be said that you served without counting the cost and helped make the world a better place than you found it. Lion Errol Lee District Governor 60B
