CHELAS, LISBOA. FIVE EXPLORATIONS
Period: april 2014 | december 2014 Studio: master thesis in Architettura per il Progetto, Polytechnic of Turin Tutor: arch. Angelo Sampieri Published on: territoridellacondivisione.wordpress.com meritorious thesis, Polytechnic of Turin: architesi.polito.it Available on: issuu.com/leonardoramondetti The thesis focuses on Chelas neighborhood, in Lisbon, and it deconstructs this part of the city within five explorations aimed to bring out particular characteristics of the place. The explorations follow different methods of inquiry and adopt different tools through an approach that doesn’t allow questions with precise answers as it doesn’t admit solutions that could solve the complexity within a pacified and unified scenario. The aim is not to decrease ambitions and possibilities of the traditional urban project. It is aimed to discuss, in a context deeply signed by the economic and demographic European crisis, the potential of impossible projects, the ineffectiveness of remedial politics, the need for strong and decisive actions. The first exploration investigates the urban reality using the tools of quantitative geography and returning it through statistical surveys and mapping. The second exploration is an historical investigation. Chelas as a laboratory of Portuguese modern architecture. A organic and democratic megastructure immediately exploded in fragments that is not possible reunified.
The third exploration is a subjective and perceptual narration about this territory forced in a difficult transformation. A territory greatly affected by the economic and demographic crisis. The fourth investigation looks to the future. The differt projects implicit in Chelas. Projects that today are utopia, denied by the state of crisis. Finally the fifth exploration turn back to the present. The need to take action now in a state of emergency. Act to save the situation, even if it means giving up, temporarily or forever, to some pieces of cities in excess. Pieces that today is not possible to recycle.
On the following pages are proposed some images of the experiments performed. Experiments that are wondering how is possible put in "stand by" some territories increasing the quality of life of other spaces. The goal is to answer, in a provocative and dystopian way but not blind regarding the possibility of realization, to certain questions involving the Portuguese capital no less than other European cities. What to do with those big urban neighborhoods that are useless and problematic today? How to act in a context of economic crisis that does not allow or recycling operations or a complete denial of these parts of the city?

CUSCO LINEAR CITY
Period: april 2013 | july 2013 Studio: atelier of architectural and urban design Team work for urban planning: Luca Bertone, Cinzia Stella, Chiara Viano Teachers: arch. Pierre Alain Croset, arch. Angelo Sampieri Published on: territoridellacondivisione.wordpress and polito.it Exposed at: design unit presentation 2014 Cusco is a Peruvian city of 300.000 inhabitants. It extends for more than ten kilometers along the Rio Hutanay. Expands itself linearly along the narrow valley: from the historic Inca centre in the east to the new slums in the west. The city grows uncontrolled, without planning tools or methodologies of densification. The latest statistics predict a doubling of the population in the next ten years. New population for an area already saturated, occupied in large part from the airport. An area that present a lack of infrastructure and places capable of forming new urban centrality. Faced with this situation the project develops the hypothesis to recycle the old railway line, now in total disuse, in order to transform it into a metropolitan service. In this plan the design of new terminals is crucial, they had to present theirselves as new urban centrality.
Specifically our project team decided to decline in a modern way the concept of "Kancha": the Inca enclosure containing different social functions. The “Kancha” is interpreted as a block progressively eroded and cut. Using this concept in our project area we manage to connect the lower part of the city to the top of the escarpment present in the area creating two different environments.
The architectural project developed in the "Kancha" proposes the creation of two buildings. The first is as multifunctional space, which houses classrooms for workshops, social activities and exhibition spaces. The concrete building is configured as a stone. All lines are simple and clear, with the exception of the front south-west, hollowed and fully glazed, that becomes a telescope to the city below. The second building follows the architectural lines of the previous, and it host inside a local for restoration. The two buildings take up the initial concept of “Kancha”: a block of stone that is carved and shaped to become permeable but that maintain his own identity through his materiality and his lines.

ROOFSCAPE. LIVING THE UPCITY
Period: september 2012 | february 2013 Studio: atelier of architecural and technological design Team work: Daniele De Riccardis, Cinzia Stella Teachers: arch. Gustavo Ambrosini, arch. Guido Callegari Exposed at: architettura in cittĂ 2013, Torino
During these years the consumption of land is growing faster and faster. To counter this problem the projects test the possibility of create new houses using the roof of older bulding. This hypothesis is also considered a way to solve some social and tecnical problems of these old neighborhoods.
The project area consists in several residential buildings located in Via Giovanni Roveda. A complex built during the Seventies for the workers of Fiat. From the site analysis emerge the necessity of revitalize this peripheral area by the injection of younger population. For these reason this project propose the realization of student residence, link to the headquarters of the Polytechnic of Turin Design Faculty that is just few minutes from the site. A village in coverage, adapted to accommodate 24 students and consists of a succession of regular modules with supporting structure in x-lam. The residence proposed covers the entire roof. The entire structure is achieved by the combination of three box modules in x-lam material. We design three types of modules to house rooms, kitchens and multifunctional. These module are diffently exposed on two axes. The north-west axis houses the private spaces for students, and their services. On the other hand the south-east axis houses the commun spaces interrupted by open green areas or multifunctional rooms. These multifunctional rooms are mede in glass and they play the role of bioclimatic greenhouse during the winter. They can be totally opened during the summer to allow a greater air exchange and environmental well. We made particular attention to technological and energy design studying materials, assembly techniques and bioclimatic strategies.

COMPUTATIONAL MORPHOGENESIS
Period: february 2014 | august 2014 Studio: workshop of computational morphogenesis Team work: Iasef Rian, Bruno Iorio, Elisa Pitassi, Gabriele Bonnet, Gabriele Fusaro, Samuele Marino Teacher: arch. Mario Sassone Exposed to: conference IASS-SLTE, Brasilia 2014 The workshop aim was to construct three pavilions in the courtyard of the Polytechnic of Turin using different materials: brick, concrete and wood.
Our team decided to design a structure in wood using the parametric software Grasshopper (in Rhinoceros 3D). The aim was to create fractal structure composed of equilateral triangles equal in plant. This choice was not simply dictated by aesthetic reasons but also from structural decision. In fact we wanted to test the higher resistance of the fractal structure to non-uniform load respect to traditional structures.
We design the structure from the Teiji Takagi’s mathematical curve function. This curve is obtained modifying the height factor "w", that in the function of Archimedes for the genesis of the parabola has the value of ¼, to ½. In this way, the smooth surface of the paraboloid becomes rough, non-uniform, with statistical self-similarity. This curve was defined by Mandelbrot in 1983 as "fractal". Through the software grasshopper we manage to test different configurations and, once reached the one considered optimum we passed to the implementation phase.
The materials used for the constructive phase were wood, shaped into balls and strips, threaded rods, glue and polycarbonate panels for the roof. The complexity of the structure required a very precise work in the development of the form and returning the data from the software. Through this work we were able to optimize the time of construction. We made separate components and finally we assembly all just in five days.
