Thank you for bringing a miracle cure to children in PNG this Easter — like Aimy! Aimy was a toddler when she began experiencing the tell-tale signs of leprosy. Her parents discovered a patch of light skin on her leg. However Aimy didn’t feel anything when it was touched. It was numb. Her parents were terrified. Unfortunately, in Papua New Guinea, one third of Leprosy cases are among children. Thanks to your generosity, children like Aimy are able to access a cure quickly. Early diagnosis and treatment are so important to prevent permanent disability, and to stop leprosy spreading to others. Thanks to the support of people like you, Aimy has had access to the tablets helping to fight the bacteria of leprosy early. “Mummy I want my tablets” she would say when waking up in the morning. The daily course of medication has clearly meant a lot to Aimy.
If left untreated, the leprosy could have spread and worsened, damaging more nerves throughout her body and even potentially leading to infection or even amputation. Sadly, leprosy has no regard of age and can attack an individual at any stage of life. Although Aimy has already been through so much at such a young age, she has hope and a joyful heart. She and her family have the blessing of knowing Jesus. Your caring heart and compassion for those affected by leprosy is truly making a difference in the lives of many adults and children alike. You are bringing them hope this Easter too! Thank you for your support and kindness to help stop the effects of leprosy. Anita (19) and Binod (21), met at the Anandaban Leprosy Hospital in Nepal while undergoing treatment for leprosy. They have both been cared for and cured, thanks to the commitment of people like you to provide leprosy services through Leprosy Mission Hospitals. Anita was a young girl when she started to struggle with the effects of leprosy. Her face became paralysed, her hands started to claw, and her foot dropped. She was rejected by the teachers at her school and dropped out at only 12 years old. But thanks to compassionate people like you, Anita had successful reconstructive surgery. Binod also experienced rejection as a result of leprosy as a young boy. He was stigmatized by his family, friends and school. He struggled to hold his pen properly and often
lost his grip. He felt ashamed in front of his class and also dropped out of school. He also had ulcers on his fingers. But thanks to people like you with a heart for those affected by leprosy, Anita and Binod have conquered a huge challenge in their life. Cured and restored, they married and have since had a beautiful son named Aryan. Anita is so joyful in her new journey of motherhood and feels blessed to be able to hold her son. Binod has also found work in construction and can provide for his family. They hope their son can now have a good education, so he has a bright future and prosperous life. For nearly half a century, NLT has helped people like Alka, who have been affected by leprosy and disability or who were experiencing poverty. Their hope is the same as yours and mine — to see people move out of poverty, and to see leprosy eradicated. Together, we see people regain their health, dignity, and sense of value. Alka lives with her husband and son. Her family works in farming. But unfortunately, their income wasn’t enough to cover some of the family’s expenses and her son’s education. So, when Alka was introduced to NLT through her father (who was a driver for NLT), she had the opportunity to start working there.
