Nagendram has lived in a leprosy community since she was 16 years old and has been battling the effects of leprosy from the tender age of 11.Missionaries taught her how to weave on a handloom, making tapes that are sewn into bags. Despite her deformed fingers, she has been working as a weaver for over 25 years. Thanks to kind people like you, Nagendram has been able to support herself and her family. Often made to fit an individual, shoes protect their feet to their own personal needs. Patients learn how to wear them. They may need new protective shoes every 6 to 12 months.
Like collecting water, working in the fields, or even just running after your toddler. You may not feel the injury, but horrific ulcers can develop. They can easily get infected.

Diagnosed with leprosy 12 months ago, she’s still living with the damage leprosy can do. Alkadevi is undergoing Multi-Drug Therapy treatment at The Leprosy Mission Hospital. She is experiencing complications and needs careful monitoring by the doctors. Her son, Rahul, sits in her lap chewing his finger. Thankfully, he is not affected and nor are her 3 Alkadevidaughters.tells us that for years she never went to the doctors. She had no reason to worry about the patch on her leg, it wasn’t causing her any trouble. But then she says, “Day by day, it increased to my face, my hand, my back”. Her leprosy became so visible that her neighbours asked her to go to hospital. The patches were very big by this point, and she lost all sensation on them as they became numb. When leprosy attacks the nerves, hands and feet can become numb. Simple daily tasks can be dangerous.
Leprosy patients, like Alkadevi are also taught self-care and prevention strategies. They learn how to avoid future injury and alternative ways of doing daily tasks safely.

Prem needs special shoes to give his swollen leg more support. He used to make his own sandals out of rubber tyres. But they were very uncomfortable. He is in a Self-Help Group in Nepal. All the members wear protective sandals which meet their personal specifications and needs. Prem received Self-Care Training in his own home. Plus a package including a wash basin and soap, to help keep his legs and feet clean and free from infection. He continues his prescribed self-care exercises daily. Leprosy patients get Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT) — the cure for leprosy —free of charge. Within 24-48 hours of beginning MDT, they are no longer contagious. They can no longer pass the disease on to anyone else. They are no longer excluded or isolated from others. A full course of MDT usually takes 12 months. But in cases like Diyan’s it can take up to several years. The Leprosy Mission staff support patients throughout their treatment. They ensure they complete their full course. Diyan’s carer at the home is also affected by leprosy. He explains everything to Diyan very clearly, so he knows what is happening.
