Introducing Evangeline!

“Namaste from India, I am Evangeline!”

Because Evangeline’s father had leprosy, she has spent most of her life in a leprosy colony. Their only source of income was through begging, until her father advocated for funding for their community.

Despite many challenges, Evangeline completed her 9th standard schooling before spending a year teaching herself how to use a sewing machine and then getting married. Marrying within the colony, she could work in the weaving unit where she learned how to create cotton tapes and wind bobbin. These materials were then made into brightly coloured bags for sale in India and abroad.

“I use my earnings to meet household costs and especially for anything my daughters might need,” Evangeline said.

Sadly, there wasn’t enough weaving work for all the community’s women to work all the time. But when a women’s society formed, Evangeline began sewing bags for them too. Always quick to volunteer to learn new skills, she can cut and sew leather, canvas and tape.

Always embracing new things, Evangeline is now using ‘WhatsApp’ on a mobile phone to transfer messages between MESH designers and the production team. Her smiling face is seen frequently on the screens in the design studio.

“I am not the fastest tailor but then I make less mistakes, and since quality is important it means that I don’t have to unpick and re-stitch as much. I like sewing and enjoy learning new things, increasing my
