Bishna Bista, 38, contracted leprosy at 8 and her dad took her to Surkhet Hospital, a several days walk from her village, for treatment. Luckily, she didn’t have to undergo any surgery as she didn’t have ulcers. Thank God, she started her treatment at an early stage of leprosy, so she was spared from losing body parts. Initially admitted to the Hospital for two years, she won everyone over, including the doctors, with her friendly attitude. They let her stay on until recovery. During this time, she learned to read! And she also learned basic maths with help from hospital staff. Bishna took an amazing opportunity at PFR Pokhara. She finished a vocational training in handicrafts and tailoring. In New SADLE, she got skilled in Backstrap Weaving. Now, Bishna works in the Tailoring Section and helps with tasks such, as batik pasting, labelling and packaging.

She is married, and a mother to her son Bishal, 18, who is studying Hotel Management in college, and daughter Smriti, 14, who is at Lovely Angels English Boarding School. Bishna only occasionally suffers from fever and nerve pain – side effects of her medications. And she is deeply grateful to New SADLE for all the care and support she has received all these years. That’s how 26-year-old Mamta used to feel. She had an accident when she was eight years old that left her leg so burnt, she couldn’t walk. Despite her disability, she completed her studies and graduated. But jobs were hard to come by, and she had no confidence to apply. She feared rejection. Confined to her home in India, she felt isolated and alone. She suffered many sleepless nights. Her self-esteem was disappearing with every passing day. But then, Mamta’s life changed for the better. Mamta was found through a Leprosy Mission volunteer. They counselled her and encouraged her to join the skill development program. Mamta began to have a new vision for her life and future. Encouraged and inspired, she enrolled in a glasses making course.

Thanks to the support of people like you, Mamta is now working at The Leprosy Mission Kothara Hospital, in the optometry department. She helps patient’s vision by fitting them with prescription glasses. She has also received corrective surgery on her leg. Now, Mamta literally stands on her own feet while helping others. Dilshad can support her son... Thanks to people like you! Dilshad can’t use her left hand at all. Her right hand is a clump of “melted” bone, flesh and scarred skin. She can only move the index and middle finger. But it’s enough to create the most beautiful precision crafts. She’s one of the best hand painters at Hubli Hospital’s Rehabilitation and Training Unit in India. She executes wooden block textile prints to perfection – literally single-handedly. And it’s amazing to watch her doing tailoring work.

Thanks to people like you, Jyoti and her daughters have gained the support they need to cure their lives. Jyoti, 33, found out she had leprosy when she was pregnant with her second daughter, Elvine. A doctor trained at Anandaban hospital recognised early symptoms and referred Jyoti for treatment. She was extremely distressed at being diagnosed with leprosy. Jyoti has unhappy memories from her childhood of old men deformed by leprosy. No wonder she fears this disease, although she won’t develop these impairments. Life has been hard for Jyoti. Her firstborn, Angel, is disabled and now diagnosed with leprosy, suffering with reaction which has affected her appearance. This is devastating for the mother.

Although her neighbours don’t know she has leprosy, they are curious about her skin. Shovakhar, her neighbour, thinks that if the villagers knew she had leprosy, Jyoti would be ostracised. Shovakhar hopes to undertake some leprosy awareness activities in the village to let people know that leprosy can be cured! Jyoti is participating in the “not transmitting leprosy through breast-feeding” study at Anandaban. It is possible that MDT may offer protection to Elvine against leprosy. Karina is one of many leprosy patients in Nepal supported in their healing and recovery by compassionate people like you through The Leprosy Mission. When Karina noticed a patch on her finger, she was sent to The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Kathmandu. There she was diagnosed with leprosy and immediately began Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT is the cure for leprosy). However, when Karina developed complications, she stopped taking her MDT for 7 months! Luckily, she resumed her treatment and was able to return to school when she experienced another delay. The school principal was worried she would transfer leprosy to other students and Karina was turned away! She felt devastated.
