Munni has battled with the physical, mental, and social effects of leprosy since she was the tender age of ten.

Decades of having to be ever vigilant over any injury, the constant numbness in her toes, and having suffered a rare form of leprosy reaction, the physical toll alone has been heartbreaking. The only way Munni manages today, is with the help of constant medication.

One of ten children, after her leprosy diagnosis, Munni was treated badly even by her own family.

When Munni finally found love, and married a man from another caste, her mother completely discarded her. At that point Manni briefly felt like dying. Her sister-in laws treated her badly. Her husband ended up leaving her for another woman after only six months. She felt completely broken and alone.

Thanks to the support of people like you, Munni was able to complete a one year tailoring course. She is now working as a tailor and receptionist.

Now fully independent, Munni is rarely alone at work. She helps in labeling and packaging when needed and looks after old-aged people staying at the old-age home there. After all she has gone through personally, she feels inspired to do more work to help the older people in the future.

A leprosy screening camp finally diagnosed Shreya and referred her to The Leprosy Mission’s Anandaban Hospital in Kathmandu. A long distance to travel, and far from home 16-yearold Shreya had already been there 4 months when we visited.

Thanks to generous people like you, Shreya has received reconstructive surgery on her left hand. And it has been a success!

Now most recently her right hand has been operated on. This would not have been possible without the kindness of people like you! Thank you for your support.

Shreya will stay at the hospital for at least another 2 months and learn daily physiotherapy exercises. She tells us she is very happy with her corrected hands.

Maimunisha is 73. She has had recurrent ulcers with callouses on her legs and hands. She has been visiting a Leprosy Mission Hospital in India for the past 20+ years undergoing various procedures. All of her children have been affected by leprosy and have undergone various procedures too.

Each year Maimunisha has needed to receive treatment from the hospital. Five years ago, her left foot required amputation.

Last year she received a new prosthesis. This precious gift from a compassionate person like you, has meant she has been able to travel independently by bus to and from the hospital for treatment.

Recently she reported ‘dimness’ in her vision. Upon examination it was found she had cataracts

in both eyes. Maimunisha has now undergone surgery on her right eye. At her 6-week check-up it was great to see Maimunisha smiling as she walked around more confidently.

Patients at Leprosy Mission Hospitals receive treatment free of cost. Often leprosy patients like Maimunisha have no regular income. They have nowhere else to go for help. The expert specialised care the hospital staff provide is so desperately needed. There is no government funding. The Leprosy Mission Trust India relies solely on donations.

Asha Bhariti’s life is 'a whole different ball game' now!

Asha Bharti isn’t an internationally renowned tennis player (like Ash Barty). Not by a long shot! But she IS a skilled artisan in India. Asha works at a centre for people with disabilities. Bold and confident, she loves the company of her colleagues and enjoys her work. She feels accepted by her community and is an inspiration to others. But for most of her life, Asha’s experience was very different.

A polio infection in childhood left Asha unable to walk. “The villagers and the neighbours’ would often pass comments that God has cursed our family” Asha tells us.

Her parents tried multiple places for treatment. But there was no improvement. They kept her at home where they could take care of her personally. Most of her childhood was spent indoors. Her parents didn’t send her for schooling. When the family would go out, Asha would stay back at home. The eldest child, yet

dependent on family members for her basic needs. She had few friends, though they would help when needed.

Thankfully, Asha’s father took her to a medical outreach camp that came to the village. It was run by the centre she now works in. They provide medical treatment, skills training, and employment for people with disabilities. They asked her to come to the centre where they would operate on her legs. They also offered training programs to gain skills which would help her get work.

Today Asha is an employee at the centre and helps other people with disabilities. She also lives there.

“Now I manage my own activities. My parents are happy how I’ve developed, glad that I work and that I can bear my own expenses,” Asha said. She even contributes to her family. Now when

she goes back to her village, she has become a source of inspiration for others! Asha Bharti may not be a tennis ace, but she’s still a star!

A bus accident years ago resulted in the amputation of both of Maya’s legs. Her disability allowance is not enough for herself and her 70year-old husband to survive on. They live in Nepal. He occasionally gets a day’s work as laborer; but the work is physically taxing. He then needs to rest for several days after one day of work.

Before, they had an open-air squat toilet at the back of their house. This has been challenging and awkward for Maya to use. Her wheelchair had to navigate over bumpy ground. It was sometimes impossible during the rains. Maya used to crawl along the wet, muddy ground to reach it.

Finally, sweet relief! Thanks to people like you. Maya received a gift of love – a disability accessible toilet through the IMPACT project.

Whilst the toilet is custom built to her needs, her husband can use it too. The roof and door allow for privacy and protection from the rain. A concrete path leads from the entrance of her house to the toilet. This provides wheelchair access in all weather conditions, without getting muddy or dusty.
