Lioness.
The story so far is, that this14 year old girl began rapping in her bedroom, is heard by a group of boys passing by outside her house they then went onto form a group catapulting her into stardom? This South Londoner, heavily influenced by family members who were involved in the early grime scene also formed a group MYT (Mastermind Youth team) before her rise to fame. Her witty flow and clever wordplay led her onto her joining her brother and cousins to become the first lady of Mastermind Trooperz. Lioness’ reputation has been growing dramatically and she is now known as one of the UK’s top female MC’s. She has made appearances on Kiss 100, Radio 1 and 1Xtra with fellow group member Bearman. This year see’s her release her debut mix-tape released entitled ‘ Featureness,’ which contains old and new tracks.
Marvell.
This budding trio consists of Double S, Vertex and Shocka aka Bashir, Jeffrey and Kenneth. They all hail from the streets of Tottenham North London where through a connection of mutual friends, schools and a passion for music came together to form the group Marvell – a shortened version of marvellous in 2008. During the summer of 2010 it was a UK tour with Chipmunk that really sky rocketed them into the UK mainstream. They ended an exciting 2009 by embarking on a UK tour with Britain’s Got Talent 2009 winners Diversity and are now working hard in the studio this year to bring us follow ups of their previously successful mix tapes ‘Marvell FM, 2 and 3’.
Guvna B.
Christian rap has taken the UK by storm with Guvna B standing out from the rest. This East London born 21 year old is already quite accomplished, with a list of impressive awards under his belt. He recently won the MOBO award for Best Gospel act, has supported US superstar Kirk Franklin and headlining at Indig02 alongside other artists such as Victizzle and Faith Child. Guvna B’s musical content is drawn from personal experiences and observations made living around the gritty, controversial streets of London. His music does not glamorise negative street trends and attitudes but focuses on a deep value system, which comes from his faith. This year sees Guvna B released his free mix-tape entitled ‘Scrapbook’ which is appeals to all types of genres.

Tinie Tempah. “I’m an average, regular guy trying to live out his dream” “I just want people to know that I’m a young guy trying to live out his dream and do everything possible to make that dream happen. I’m an average, regular guy from South London, but at the same time I want it all – and I’m going to do everything in my power to make sure that happens.” – Tinie Tempah is passionate about what he does and it definitely reflects in his music and lyrics. November 7th 1988 saw the birth of Patrick Chukwuemeka Okogwu Junior known to us all as ‘Tinie Tempah’. This South London artist first gained recognition back in 2006 where he received a lot of airplay on the ever so popular British music TV channel, Channel U. He released many singles including, ‘Wifey Riddim’. By the end of 2007 he collaborated with two other grime artists, Agent X and Ultra in a song entitled ‘Perfect Girl’. Tinie also released ‘Tears’ in 2008, which was taken from his debut mix-tape, ‘Hood Economics’. However, it can be said that it was his tour with Chipmunk in February 2009 (another ‘grime’ artist turned mainstream) that increased his fan base to an international level. In October of that same year Tinie signed a record deal with Parlophone and released his debut single ‘Pass Out’ on the 28th February 2010. It became a huge success receiving 4 million views on You Tube thus hitting the number 1 spot in the British charts. To date, ‘Pass Out’ has received an excess of over 11 million views on You Tube and its follow up single ‘Frisky’ shot straight to number 2 and has a total of over 8 million viewings. Combined sales show that both singles have already sold 750, 000 copies and it is predicted his forthcoming single, ‘Written in the Stars’ is set to be yet another smash hit. There is no doubt that 2010 saw Tinie Tempah as the ‘new kid on the block’ with his phenomenal smash hit ‘Pass Out’ being the track of the summer. Tinie has been booked for all the big main stage performances such as; Wireless, the Big Chill, Glastonbury, Ibiza Rocks and Radio 1’s Big weekend. Having toured with Jay – Z, Chase & Status, Rihanna and Mr. Hudson, Tinie announced his own headlining tour with the likes of Chiddy Bang and Bluey Robinson late last year the week following his highly anticipated debut album ‘Disc-Overy’. This album confirms Tinie’s ability to achieve global success with him already
being on the US radar thanks to such remixes with P.Diddy and Snoop Dogg. The diversity of ‘Disc-Overy’ features collaborations with Ellie Goulding, Kelly Rowland, production from Labrinth, newcomers Ishi, Al Shux ( of Jay-Z’s Empire State of mind) and Naughty Boy, Chipmunk, Wiley, as well as renowned dance producers Swedish House Mafia. As we are already in early 2011 it is needless to say that Tinie Tempah will continue to triumph as a young artist and it is clear that this is only the beginning of a wonderful career.

Exploring the Canon Exploring the Canon a day of performance readings aimed at putting forward a diverse range of plays that we believe should be included in the nation’s canon. “All you need is Love!...” By JB Rose Original idea and Research by Fiona
February 14th is nearly upon us; love is in the air and cupid sis very busy. For those who are in loving relationships it’s a time where gifts are exchanged and meaningful romantic gestures are meant to prove love is in abundance. Or if you and your partner has spent the year arguing about bills suffocating caring thoughts and actions– you can take this time to mend bridges and remember why you came together in the first place. Single people maybe daydreaming about the perfect partner or you may be happily dating the odd person or you may even be enjoying a break from having to consider someone else’s needs. Hey, sometimes it’s good to be selfish. Whatever the reason for your relationship status if you’re single this year, why not spend it showing a friend or family member how much you really love and appreciate them and if you’re partnered up, do something different to them show you care. After all isn’t that real meaning of Valentines Day? In the year 270, St. Valentine was believed to be a Roman priest who enjoyed marrying couples even though it was forbidden. Emperor Claudius had past a ‘no marriage’ law because of the large amount of men who refused to join his army because they didn’t want to leave their wives and children. Eventually, St. Valentine was captured for his disobedience and was put in prison. Whilst incarcerated many young people came to visit him sending flowers and cards up to his window, they wanted him to know they too also believed in love. One of these young people was the daughter of one of the prison guards. She often visited St. Valentine and kept his spirits up whilst he was in there. On the day he was sentenced to death – 14th February, he left her a note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. At the end of the letter he signed it, “Love from your Valentine”. Although cynics and a few men who want to get out of buying their partner a gift; often consider Valentines day a commercial exercise to extract more money from our ever depleting pockets, many take the opportunity to get out of the rat race and re-connect with their nearest and dearest. And anyway us women love to be loved, wined and dined and have our every wish and whim seen to. But don’t forget women, men are suckers for a bit of brow stroking and ear nibbling with generous helpings of flattery, and praise. So why not do something different this year, break away from the mediocre traditional Valentine’s Day gifts presented at an expensive restaurant. Surprise your partner with something unusual.

March Desert Flower.
Waris is one of twelve children born into a traditional family of tribal desert nomads in East Africa. Waris lived in harmony with family and nature until she was around five years old; when she went through the practice of female circumcision. This turned her life upside down causing changes in her behaviour, having seen her sister die from the same custom. At the age of twelve her father arranged her marriage to a sixty-year-old stranger. She was worth five camels... being unhappy at this decision she ran away. After only barely surviving the dangerous Somalia desert, she manages to get to London, where she works for one of her relatives for a couple of years. When the Parthenon was completed in 432 BC, Athens had already embarked on the disastrous ‘Peloponnesian War’ against Sparta. Final defeat in 404 BC brought about the end of Athens’ golden age and stripped the city of its empire, defences and - for a time at least - its democratic government. The building programme on the Athenian Acropolis was interrupted by the war. The temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheum were two buildings that suffered delays and both are represented by sculpture and architecture in Room 19. Storyteller Jan Blake, and poet and novelist Valerie Bloom have put together a rich evening of words, sounds and memories of Miss Lou, with contributions by a distinguished group of other writers and performers who knew, or were greatly inspired by her including Amina Blackwood Meeks and Jean Binta Breeze.
