We don’t have to go too far, we just need to refresh our memories of the four weeks past. October was a very special month, highlighting many causes and celebrating many things. In particular, we celebrated Black History Month. Hopefully you flicked through the pages of your Life In Colour and saw the myriad of activities we had in store for you, from exhibitions to workshops, and maybe you even learned a few things at some of these events. But now it’s November. So why am I talking about last month’s edition? Because I want to highlight that it’s ok to continue talking about Black History Month after 31 October. It’s ok to talk and think and learn about Black History. Just because the month is over doesn’t mean we put our curiosity back in a box until next October comes around. Go out and seek Black History every day of the year. History if OUR story, we are all involved in it, and I ask you, without knowing where you came from, how can you possibly know where you are going? To help you on your life-long journey of discovery, we have paid homage to a legendary African musician and political activist in this edition of Life In Colour. Fela Kuti is known for his music and outlandish ways, and his life story is out of this world. This month the musical Fela! reaches the National Theatre, so what a fitting time to give you his life timeline, , a little explanation as to why he has been immortalised in this way. Whatever you choose to do this month, I hope you enjoy doing it. There’s plenty of fun to be had this month, just flick through these pages. Try to learn something new at all you attend.

Inside
Philip Osment’s powerful play about manhood, self-knowledge and growth hits The Roundhouse this November. Looking for relief from boredom and a chance to get off the wing, seven young fathers in prison sign-up for an education programme. They try to use the workshops to settle scores and to rise up the prison pecking order. But they’re confronted with more than they’d bargained for, as they face up to their relationships with their children and their own fathers. Self-deceptions, vulnerabilities, and failed hopes and dreams are revealed, unleashing anger and violence that the workshop leaders struggle to contain. Researched in Rochester Prison with a young fathers group, the pilot project was devised at the National Youth Theatre in 2008 and was presented as Fathers Inside at Cookham Wood Young Offenders Institute and at the Soho Theatre to critical acclaim. Fela Kuti is probably the most prolific musician West Africa has ever seen. As the father of Afrobeat, the singer and multi-instrumentalist has influenced artists all over the world and even inspired major American artists and actors like Jay-Z and Will Smith to immortalise him on the Broadway stage. As a political activist, he won the hearts of the politically minded the world over for his Nigerian warrior spirit. This was a man who danced to the beat of his own drum; literally. For those that don’t know, here is a timeline of his incredible life. 15 October 1938 — Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria, into a middle-class family. 1958 — Fela is sent to London to study medicine but decides to study music instead at Trinity College of Music.
1960 — Fela marries his first wife Remilekun Taylor and they have three children. 1963 — Fela moves back to Nigeria and trains as a radio presenter at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. He also plays with Victor Olaiya and his All Stars. 1967 — Fela travels to Ghana for musical inspiration and direction. He decides to call his sound Afrobeat. 1969 — Fela takes the All Stars to the US. There he discovers the Black Power movement through Black Panther Sandra Smith. This heavily influences his politic views and he renames the band Nigeria ’70. His lyrical content changed from love to social issues. 1970 — Fela is deported from the US. When he returns to Nigeria, he forms the Kalakuta Republic — a commune, a recording studio and a home for those connected to the band. He later declared Kalakuta Republic independent from the Nigerian state. He renames the band again, this time to Africa ’70. 1971 — Fela changes his middle name from Ransome to Anikulapo a he feels Ransome is a slave name. He sets up a nightclub in the Empire Hotel named the Afro-Spot and then the Afrika Shrine, where he regularly performs his politically charged songs and recordings. He performs and records in pidgin to reach more Africans. The nightclub is raided regularly. 1977 — Fela and the Afrika ‘70 release the hit album Zombie. It’s a scathing attack on Nigerian soldiers, which infuriates the government. This sets off a vicious attack against the Kalakuta Republic, where one thousand soldiers attacked the commune. Fela is severely beaten, and his mother is thrown from a window to her death. The Kalakuta Republic is burned to the ground, destroying Fela’s studio, instruments, and master tapes. The official inquiry claimed the commune was destroyed by an ‘unknown soldier’. Fela responds to the attack by delivering his mother’s coffin to the Dodan Barracks in Lagos, General Olusegun Obasanjo’s residence. He also to writes two songs: “Coffin for Head of State” and “Unknown Soldier”.
1978 — Fela marries 27 women to mark the anniversary of the attack on Kalakuta Republic. Many of the women were members of the band, singers and composers. At a concert in Accra, riots break out during the song Zombie. Fela is banned from re-entering Ghana. After a concert at the Berlin Jazz Festival, Fela’s musicians desert him due to whisperings that he was planning to use all the proceeds to fund his presidential campaign.
he is released. In this year he divorced is remaining 12 wives claiming ‘marriage brings jealousy and selfishness’.
1979 — Fela forms the political party, Movement of the People. He tries to enter the presidential race — Nigeria’s first in more than 10 years — but is refused. He forms a new band, Eygpt ’80, and infuriates the establishment again with another hot political track, ITT (International Thief-Thief ).
1993 — Fela faces yet more corruption from the military and the establishment. This time, he and three members of Africa ’70 are arrested for murder.
1984 — Fela is jailed on a dubious charge of currency smuggling. Several human rights organisations weigh in and after 20 months
1989 — Fela and Egypt ‘80 released the anti-apartheid album, ‘Beasts of No Nation’. On the cover, then US President Ronald Reagan, UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, South African Prime Minister Pieter Willem Botha are depicted with fangs dripping with blood.
2 August 1997 — Fela Kuti dies from Kaposi ‘s Sarcoma, which had be brought on by AIDS. More than one million attended his funeral, which was at the site of the old Shrine compound.

Some focused on breathing while others were rigorous routines with swinging legs and arched backs. I chose to stand back and watch and still gained insight into the world of yoga.

There were plenty of yoga clothes on sale. As I said, this is a lifestyle, so not all garments were meant for the classes. Some of the harem pants would be good for nipping into town in, as well as for breathing exercises and medication.
In fact, yoga is more than a great way to develop good posture, it’s a lifestyle, with it’s own clothing, equipment and prevailing mindsets. I went down to Kensington Olympia for the Yoga Show 2010 to get a taste of what yoga is about and what the UK community has to offer. The food and drink stalls were to die

Nov Famous For the Wrong Reasons Famous For The Wrong Reasons is a moving photographic exhibition that aims to educate and deter those vulnerable to gun and knife crime. Created by acclaimed photographer Sal Idriss, it is inspired by the artist’s own experience of this form of crime; it is a tribute to his brother Nassirudeen, who died in 2007 as the result of an unprovoked knife attack in Islington, a few days before his 17th birthday. The grieving experience drew Sal’s attention to the many families throughout London, dealing with the devastating loss of a loved one through knife or gun crime. Their personal stories are the impetus for this poignant project, which aims to educate and deter people from across London and beyond. Individual portraits, many taken on location, show families not as names, numbers or headlines that disappear, but as people who are coping with loss, pain and immense sadness, every day. As a result of knife and gun crime activity, so many families across London have become Famous for the Wrong Reasons. This significant project, developed with the support of young people across London’s boroughs, shows their raw emotions and portrays them with honesty and compassion. It complements the tour of Nō performance and associated events being presented across the UK this autumn. The V&A has been collecting Nō masks - worn by performers of this form of Japanese musical drama - since 1876, a time when the fate of Nō hung in the balance. That same year saw the ban on wearing swords by the samurai - who had been the traditional patrons of Nō for centuries. Nov Look Closer
08 Dec
This November the Tricycle Gallery presents its first visual arts commission, Look Closer, by the London-based artist K Yoland. Taking place in two halves, the exhibition explores the richness and diversity of Kilburn and the nearby area as expressed through the people and architecture that help define it. Working
with individuals and local community groups, ranging from youth clubs and basketball teams to sea cadets and boxers, K Yoland has created a social study of the area through a personal, artist-led approach. Navigating the grey areas between performance, portraiture and documentary photography, she has created a powerful and engaging series of images that connect to wider dialogues around youth representation and the influence of media, whilst capturing the fundamental essence of life in Kilburn and its neighbourhoods. The two-part exhibition will be hosted by the Tricycle Gallery, with a video presented off-site in a temporary space located at 288 Kilburn High Road. The first part of the exhibition will focus on the themes of architecture and place, explored through a series of large-scale panoramic images. Part two will look at notions of identity and the significance of social groups and teams - questioning ideas of intimacy, the relationship between subject and camera and the role of the artist within

an unelected appointment. Following positions in Equal Opportunities, Training and Management Services in local government in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Camden and Hackney, she became Chief Executive of the Equal Opportunities Commission 1989–94. After resigning from the cabinet, Baroness Amos took up a directorship with Travant Capital, a Nigerian private equity fund launched in 2007 and is involved with the 2012 Olympic Committee.
Barrister Constance Briscoe was one of six children born to two Jamaicans who settled in the UK in the 1950s. Briscoe studied Law at the University of Newcastle, financing her studies through various weekend and holiday jobs including working at a hospice with the terminally ill. After completing her MA at the University of Warwick she was called to the Bar in 1983, and became a Recorder, a part time
judge in 1996 - one of the first black women to sit as a judge in the UK. Briscoe’s legal practice focuses on criminal law and fraud, principally defending. In 2003, Lady Scotland of Asthal, as she is also known, was made Minister of State for the Criminal Justice system and Law Reform at the Home Office. On 28 June 2007, Baroness Scotland was appointed Attorney General by the new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. She is the first woman to hold the office since its foundation in 1315.

2004. She received a DBE, and was assigned Queen Bench Division, the Administrative Court, and the Criminal Division of the Court of Appeal. At the time of the appointment, Dobbs said: “It is a great honour to have been invited by the Lord Chancellor to become a High Court Judge… I am confident, nevertheless, that I am the first of many to come”. She has subsequently been appointed as Chairman of the Magisterial Committee of the Judicial Studies Board.
D: 2000
Bernard Grant was one of many West Indians who took up the British government’s invitation to the colonies to move to the UK for blue-collar employment in 1963. He was for a period a member of the Socialist Labour League. He quickly became a trade union official, and moved into politics, becoming a Labour councilor in the London Borough of Haringey in 1978. As council leader during the Broadwater Farm riot of 1985, in which a policeman, PC Blakelock, was killed, he was thrown into the public eye, when he was widely quoted as saying “The police got
a bloody good hiding”. Grant claimed had been taken out of context, but offered an apology to the family of PC Blakelock. The controversy did not prevent him from becoming MP for Tottenham in the 1987 election, one of only three black MPs at the time. As an MP he backed demands for black sections in the Labour and was recognised as a staunch voice against Police racism. In September 2007 in Tottenham, London, Haringey Council opened the Bernie Grant Arts Centre in his name.

On 24 October 2006 she was appointed Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Youth Affairs, and she is an Honorary Vice President of the British Youth Council. After Gordon Brown became Prime Minister, on 27 June 2007, Butler was made one of the Labour Party’s six Vice Chairs, with particular responsibility for Youth issues.

He was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs
