SITE Barcelona is a city of spaces. Urban squares. Wide boulevards. Narrow side streets. City parks. Intersections. Courtyards.

Spaces of diffferent shapes and sizes permeate the city, creating openings and cracks in the urban fabric, as if pushing apart the urban enclo-

The contrast between consecutive spaces can be vast; large light spaces leadsure which creates them.

ing into dark and narrow alleys; noisy, busy horizon-bound boulevards opening into quiet leafy squares.

The Placa de les Camarelles is an urban square in the cultural district in the old town of the city. It is a large open square in the midst of old narrow streets, a breath of fresh air from the noise of the Ciutat Vella. With its surrounding squares the Placa forms a

series of changing urban spaces.

DANCE MOVEMENT .CONNECTION. LIGHT. Dance is about the connection between people, visually, physically and emotionally, it is about the poetry of a movement drifting through a space, about how the light defines the dancer's body and how shadow captures the expression upon their face.

Movement- The building is a series of spaces

- much like the city itself - and moving through it one moves on an architectural progression through courtyards, passageways, between inside and outside.

Connection- Spaces are visually connected, people can communicate between levels, across voids, through screens. Light- Filtered through screens, the play of light in

the building is like a dance in itself.

The steel screen- a device for creating privacy and filtering light.

COINCIDING OF OPENINGS Both of the building's skins contain openings, however openings in the steel screen and those in the concrete walls do not always coincide. Sometimes only the concrete opens and the steel screen stays intact, allowing light to filter through the screen into the space. Sometimes they do coincide and a view is framed.

The building's circulation allow two routes to the primary dance studio, one

direct and the other much more explora tory, allowing the visitor to either get straight to the dance class or to wander around and experience the varying compressions of the building.
