LEXINGTON CLINIC
SPORTS MEDICINE
A PART OF THE LEXINGTON CATHOLIC FAMILY FOR OVER 30 YEARS
Lexington Clinic Orthopedics – Sports Medicine has been the Sports Medicine providers at Lexington Catholic for over 30 years. This partnership is a service contract to provide Sports Medicine services, but has become much more like a family partnership. In addition to sports, the Lexington Clinic staff have many affiliations with the school; Dr. Brandon Devers is a graduate of Lexington Catholic High School, Dr. David Dome and Dr. Stephen Umansky have had children graduate from Lexington Catholic, and Dr. Peter Hester has two daughters at Lexington Catholic High School currently.
The Sports Medicine team consists of two certified athletic trainers (ATCs), a group of team orthopedic physicians, a physical therapist and many more providers. The two athletic trainers most visible on campus daily are Mike Smith and Susie Bell. Mike started at Lexington Catholic in 2016, and is currently working
with the football team. Susie started at Lexington Catholic in 2018 and is currently working with all other sports teams. They can most often be found in one of the two athletic training facilities after the school day, and over the summer, preparing athletes for practice and games, performing rehabilitation to injuries and performing a variety of related tasks daily.
As defined by the National Athletic Trainers Association, athletic trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, in accordance with their education, training and state’s statutes, rules and regulations. In Kentucky, athletic trainers are licensed by the Kentucky Board of Medical Licensure.
As part of the health care team, services provided by athletic trainers include primary care, injury and illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, emergent care, examination and clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
