es actuels étudiants en deuxième année ont passé leur concours d’admission à Sciences Po dans des conditions singulières. En 2018, en pleine réforme nationale du système d’affectation post-baccalauréat, qui allait donner naissance au tout nouveau logiciel Parcoursup introduisant une dose de sélection dans certaines filières, des étudiants se mobilisent rue Saint-Guillaume pour protester contre le tri des élèves à l’université. La ZAD de Saint-Germain-des-Prés est alors immédiatement raillée, elle qui est le théâtre d’une situation toute paradoxale : des sciencepistes, justement sélectionnés sur le volet, arborant des affiches à la tonalité marxiste pour la démocratisation de l’entrée à l’université, eux qui incarnent le visage paroxysmique de la fermeture du système des grandes écoles. Interloquant souvenir, lorsqu’il s’est murmuré, à la fin du 1er semestre mentonnais, qu’un mouvement de protestation éclaterait pour fustiger les conditions d’étude sur le campus de Menton, à l’occasion de la venue de Frédéric Mion. sant un dernier devoir sur leur MacBook Pro, est déjà gênant ; la vivre aurait pu être traumatisant.

De la légitimité à se plaindre de ses conditions d’étude Esquisser une révolution à Sciences Po, c’est se confronter à l’éternel dilemme du privilégié mécontent.

S’exposer aux railleries de l’immense majorité des autres universités de France, qui ne disposent pas d’un quart des infrastructures dont bénéficient les étudiants à Menton, qui peinent à recruter des professeurs compétents, qui n’ont pas accès à l’intégralité des bases de données dont nous disposons pour effectuer nos travaux, qui traînent dans une pagaille administrative dont la lenteur ferait passer notre processus d’affectation en troisième année pour une formalité absolue, et qui ne dispose pas d’une responsable pédagogique connaissant le nom, les goûts, et la personnalité de chaque élève, et les invitant à la rencontrer plus de trois fois par semestre. Mais c’est immédiatement se poser cette question : même s’il y a toujours pire ailleurs, pourquoi se censurer dans sa révolte, et pourquoi taire des revendications jugées peut-être à tort illégitimes ? A ce dilemme infernal, il faut ajouter une donnée primordiale qui explique sûrement l’échec de la formation d’une ZAD de la vieille-ville : les Mentonnais, comme la plupart de sciencepistes, sont agoraphobes.

L’esprit critique, le recul sur les notions apprises, sont en soi salvateurs, car ils permettent d’une part d’établir une distance savoureuse avec l’objet d’étude, et d’autre part de se faire son propre jugement.

Hélas, cette révolution critique et ce reproche sans cesse fait à Sciences Po de déconnecter les élèves du réel, versent trop souvent dans un scepticisme malvenu et autosatisfait. Plusieurs élèves, sûrement contents d’être allés au-delà de l’apprentissage primaire des théories de Weber et pensant avoir acquis un degré supérieur d’intelligence, pensent que leur nouvel esprit critique les dispense de s’intéresser aux cours, ou de bien vouloir y adhérer, au prétexte que ceuxci seraient orientés. Curieuse conception du savoir.

Et qui donne lieu à des scènes hallucinantes, où des étudiants entrent en amphithéâtre pensant déjà savoir mieux que le professeur, où des élèves ayant pris tellement de distance critique vis-à-vis de l’institution de Sciences Po ne prennent plus goût à apprendre.

A ceux-là, il faudrait rappeler que pour se permettre de déconstruire un objet d’étude, encore faut-il déjà avoir accepté de le construire, de s’en imprégner, de s’y intéresser sans arrière-pensée, même en gardant à l’esprit qu’il est peut-être orienté. Que, certes, certains cours relèvent d’une vision du monde particulière - dont personne ne se cache d’ailleurs, lorsqu’il suffit de taper le nom de tel professeur sur Internet pour s’apercevoir qu’il appartient au libéral Institut Montaigne -, mais que cette vision n’est pas forcé-

ment invalide seulement parce qu’elle est idéologique, et qu’elle peut plus nous apprendre que des certitudes plaquées partout. Comment d’ailleurs reprocher à Sciences Po de nous transmettre des certitudes primaires si, à notre tour, au nom du refus de ces certitudes, l’on créé nos propres dogmes en vertu desquels l’on refuse d’apprendre ?

L

’association The Student Agora, créée il y a près de deux ans, a pour but de concevoir divers événements visant à promouvoir les échanges et les discussions. Elle organise notamment une conférence internationale annuelle au sein de laquelle des intervenants de tout âge et nationalité ont l’occasion de s’exprimer librement sur un thème donné ; la deuxième édition de cette conférence, [R] evolution : motions of change, se tiendra le 4 avril 2020 de 10h à 18h sur le campus de Menton.

Poser les jalons d’une réflexion mêlant les concepts de progrès, de modernité mais aussi d’évolution, elle-même susceptible de se mouvoir en révolution, s’avère être un sujet bien épineux. Force est de constater que ces termes sont, dès les prémices de notre Histoire, avant tout peu consensuels mais surtout très enclins à déchaîner les foules et les passions, en témoignent les textes polémiques de Rousseau sur le progrès ou la pensée techno-critique de Paul Valéry, pour qui la science a « été déshonorée par la cruauté de ses applications ».

Parce que le débat ne se clôturera jamais tant que l’être humain foulera le sol, la solution serait peut-être d’accepter que les choses changent, évoluent et nous contraignent parfois à changer notre manière d’appréhender le monde, comme le suggère Michel Serres dans son ouvrage Petite Poucette, véritable plongée dans un nouveau rapport aux objets et aux êtres environnants. Parce que

les soubresauts des mouvements contestataires au Liban, au Chili ou à Hong-Kong nous tiennent en haleine et constituent le quotidien de notre fil d’actualité depuis maintenant quelques mois, parce que de nouveaux systèmes de pensées tendent à bousculer les mentalités, remettant en cause la place de l’Homme au sein d’un monde dans lequel il s’est arrogé le droit d’être « maître et possesseur de la nature », et parce que le palimpseste que constituent le Moyen-Orient et le monde dans sa globalité nécessite d’être décortiqué, analysé et contextualisé pour comprendre les enjeux contemporains qui agitent l’humanité, nous espérons que la conférence sur le thème [R]evolution : motions of change, occasion idéale d’interagir et d’échanger avec des individus venus des quatre coins de la planète, sera prolifique et vous permettra d’en apprendre plus sur vous-mêmes et sur le monde qui vous entoure. lgérie, Chili, Chine, Colombie, Équateur, France, Irak, Liban … 2019 aura sans nul doute été une année de contestations, si ce n’est de révolutions. À travers le monde, et ce sans interruption, les peuples se sont levés, ont crié, se sont battus pour des raisons aussi diverses que variées. Néanmoins, il est possible de déceler un élément commun à toutes ces luttes : une volonté de profond changement. Par ailleurs, en s’attardant plus longuement sur les événements les plus récents, un thème tend à resurgir et à gagner de plus en plus de terrain à l’échelle internationale : la lutte féministe.

La cause féministe à l’heure des révolutions : Lutte plus ou moins dissimulée au sein de certaines révolutions et soulèvements, la lutte pour les droits des femmes et contre les violences perpétrées à leur encontre a récemment pris une tournure beaucoup plus virulente et engagée. À l’heure où j’écris cet article, 149 féminicides (terme toujours souligné en rouge sur Word comme s’il s’agissait d’une faute) ont été commis en France en 2019 et une nouvelle vague de contestations commence à déferler dans une multitude de pays à travers le monde.

Depuis maintenant plusieurs semaines, un mouvement initié par quatre chiliennes, connu sous le nom de LasTesis, commence à se faire connaître et à prendre de l’ampleur, au Chili comme ailleurs. Le mouvement tend à s’étendre grâce à une chanson, Un violador en tu camino (« un violeur sur ton chemin »), devenue virale sur les réseaux sociaux depuis peu. Petit à petit, des actions ont été menées à Santiago, à Madrid, à Mexico mais aussi à Paris, à Berlin, à New Delhi et même à Beyrouth (et bien plus encore).

Selon Macarena, jeune étudiante chilienne de 24 ans, si le mouvement s’est diffusé avec une telle rapidité et une telle puissance, c’est bien puisque la cause transcende les frontières. Pratiquement chaque femme, dans chaque pays du monde, se sent concernée. « Depuis notre naissance, nous ne sommes pas égales aux hommes et sommes victimes de la société profondément machiste dans laquelle nous vivons » explique-t-elle.

L’heure de la révolution féministe mondiale aurait-elle sonnée ? Malheureusement, il semble qu’il soit encore bien trop tôt pour le dire, au moment où des milliers de femmes sont victimes d’agressions sexuelles et de viols tous les jours.

Cependant, il faut avouer que le vent de révolte internationale qui a commencé à souffler n’en demeure pas moins intéressant et prometteur. En effet, il s’avère que les différents mouvements contestataires qui se sont multipliés cette année tendent à inclure cette problématique dans leurs revendications.

ll revolutions are, in fact, a result of an evolutionary process. Before examining the historical examples according to this statement, take a look at your life. Can you give an example of a life-changing, revolutionary moment? Your acceptance of university, a piece of life-changing advice from your friend or mentor... All these are at the end of a long process of hard-work. Therefore, we can say that the decisions and changes that occurred in our lives are a result of a process. They emanate from passion, dedication and following the true models. They evolve throughout our destiny and develop into a more effective phase at some points of our life which we call Revolutionary moments. The very same course is seen in history as well.

Two Opposed Powers Rising from Evolutionary Revolutions Nowadays, the conflict between the United States and Iran is rising by posing a threat to the Middle East and the rest of the world. These countries are seen as the results of the “American Revolution” in the 18th century and the “Islamic Revolution” in the 20th century.

Before the Revolution, Iran was a monarchy ruled under the autocratic regime of Shah Reza Pahlavi. Even though the despotic regime of the Pahlavi dynasty has

started in 1925, there was not an apparent opposition until 1978. Therefore, it is seen as the Islamic Revolution has happened in only one year. However, the evolutionary process that actually caused the Revolution started far beyond. The rapid economic growth of the Imperial State of Iran in the 1960s resulted in high expectations which have not been met. The dissatisfaction of the people tried to be suppressed by the monarch with the usage of violence which is the foremost factor of the evolutionary revolution. All these and many more steps turned the wheels of transformation which resulted in the today’s Islamic Republic of Iran.

A similar process is applicable to the American Revolution case. Many steps evolved the unrest of the people to a Revolution. One of the primary examples of these steps is the Stamp Act. In 1765, the Parliament of Great Britain imposed an intolerable tax on the British colonies in North America, so-called Stamp Act which requires a special stamp on printed products such as newspapers, legal documents, playing cards, and many other documents used all over the colonies.

These kinds of heavy economic burdens were dictated to the colonial population to compensate for dramatically increasing military expenditure of Britain as a result of wars such as the Seven Years’ War between 1756 and 1763. The Acts and Wars evolved the discomfort of the people to a devastating level which led to a severe

Revolution. The Boston Tea Party was a vigorous reflection of the colonists against unjust and unbearable taxation. In December 1773, the members of the “Sons of Liberty” which is an organization protesting the violation of the rights of American colonies, disguised as Native Americans and dumped a massive amount of tea brought by Brtish merchants into the ocean. The evolutionary revolution took place following these steps and also by being a precedent for the French Revolution that will be explained in the following part.

As we can see in all these examples from the pressure to economics, philosophy to wars, many different factors play a role in the process of a Revolution. These elements evolve, grow and compose the various origins and impacts of the Revolution. The French Evolution Now, let’s look at the famous example of the French Revolution. We all know by heart the origins and legacy of it. But, did it just happen? Of course not! The ancien regime has ruled the country cruelly and unequally just like in the first two examples. The privileged social position of first and second estates who are exempted from paying major taxes, but on the contrary the wealthiest part of the French community, ruined the proper functioning of the country. This fact and the endless desires of the monarchy resulted in an economic freefall that brought the French Revolution and the end of old rule. The ideas of the Enlightenment philosophers also supported the Revolution ideologically and enlightened the revolutionary path for the third estate via their literature work. The developing process of the Revolution can be observed throughout history: the involvement of France in Seven Years Wars between 1756 - 1763 and American War of Independence between 1775 - 1783 which worsen the economy, the publication of Social Contract by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1762 which opened a way for the revolutionaries, and the conclusion can be seen as the Storming of the Bastille on 14 July 1789.

Ici, tout est dans l’imprévu. Le pari quotidien : à quelle heure l’université va-t-elle être envahie de manifestants ? À quelle heure les forces de l’ordre vont-elles rétorquer en attaquant les étudiants à l’intérieur du campus ? À quelle heure l’université va-t-elle fermer et annoncer l’annulation des cours de toute la semaine ? Vais-je pouvoir rentrer dans mon bunker à temps ? Combien d’étudiants vont souffrir et suffire? e 23 novembre 2019, des manifestations contre les violences sexistes et sexuelles faites aux femmes ont eu lieu dans de nombreuses villes de France. Près de 49 000 personnes s’étaient rassemblées à Paris. Organisées par le collectif #NousToutes, ces marches ont rendu compte de l’ampleur de la mobilisation contre les violence sexistes et sexuelles, et plus particulièrement contre les féminicides. Diana Russel et Jill Radford définissent le féminicide comme « le meurtre de femmes commis par des hommes parce qu’elles sont des femmes ». Au cours de l’année 2019, 150 femmes sont mortes tuées par leur conjoint ou ex-conjoint reporte le collectif #NousToutes. Sur les 13 premiers jours de l’année 2020, 5 féminicides étaient déjà comptabilisés. Ces phénomènes, passés sous silence, sont récurrents. Leur caractère structurel s’explique par une domination masculine violente et par un système juridique défaillant qui invisibilise les victimes et qui laisse de nombreux agresseurs impunis.

En effet, après plainte au commissariat, très peu de victimes voient leur cas aboutir en justice, par manque de preuves ou car leur parole est remise en question. De même, les pères violents gardent souvent l’emprise sur la famille ou les enfants. Ainsi, en novembre dernier, le Conseil d’Europe épingle la France pour ses faiblesses dans le combat contre les violences sexistes et sexuelles et souligne que les politiques « peinent à reconnaitre la spécificité des violences faites aux femmes et tendent à les assimiler à d’autres problématiques sociales ».

Face à la récurrence des féminicides et à l’inaction gouvernementale, la mobilisation contre ces violences se structure autour d’associations ou de collectifs sur internet tels que #NousToutes, L’importante, Simone

Media ou Les Glorieuses par exemple. Un des but est de faire pression sur le gouvernement pour que des mesures effectives soient mises en place. Un Grenelle contre les violences faites aux femmes s’est clos le 25 novembre 2019 après 3 mois de discussions. Le gouvernement a annoncé des mesures telles que la mise en place d’une grille d’évaluation des dangers pour les gendarmes et les policiers, le retrait de l’autorité parentale d’un père agresseur, ainsi que le fonctionnement du numéro d’urgence 3919 tous les jours et à toute heure.

De plus, 1000 places d’hébergement vont être mise en place pour les victimes et la mention d’ « emprise conjugale » sera ajoutée dans le code pénale. Ainsi, par ces mesures, le dysfonctionnement des institutions telles que la justice et la police est formellement reconnu.

En revanche, ce n’est toujours pas assez pour adresser l’ampleur des violences faites aux femmes. Suite au Grenelle, le gouvernement n’a pas répondu à la demande d’un plus grand budget pour combattre ces violences. Selon le Haut Comité pour l’Egalité et des associations 1 milliard d’euros sont nécessaire pour aider les associations qui accompagnent les victimes et les familles des victimes. De plus, un meilleur accompagnement psychologique doit être mis en place, avec la construction de plus d’hébergements spécialisés. Au niveau de nos institutions, nos lois doivent juridiquement reconnaitre la spécificité du féminicide et le dépôt de plainte doit être rendu plus accessible pour les vicUn changement times. reta Thunberg is a divisive figure. Some distrust her, they find her radical and unlikeable. Their dislike is often tied to her mental disabilities, which include Asperger’s, OCD and ADHD. Her diagnoses are often stressed by her detractors, either as rendering her vulnerable to manipulation by adults with an agenda, or as making her irrational and delusional. I believe this is both a strategy to discredit Greta, and a common reaction among people lacking an understanding of non-neurotypical behaviors.

I will not claim to have a good understanding of either Asperger’s or ADHD, as I do not have either myself and have not discussed them enough with someone to truly understand, if that is possible. However, I do suffer from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), and I relate deeply to Greta’s most probably illness-induced obsession with climate change.

And so, the sick person is the right one among the healthy. She is the most clear-sighted of us all.

I am usually opposed to describing being non-neurotypical as a “gift” or a different perspective on the world, because that may validate the various fears or delusions the sufferer may have. I use the word mental illness for myself, because my OCD has truly caused me a lot of suffering and disrupts my life daily still.

Whenever someone claims my OCD is a gift, I start wondering if my crazy fears and time-wasting compulsions are legitimate after all.

But Greta is obsessed with something that is real and valid. Climate change is obviously real. We are lucky to have someone push for change. Someone who is incapable of looking away from reality, and thus compulsively needs to act. Greta’s obsession with hindering climate change is a gift - maybe not to her as she must I see Greta’s relentless engagement as a clear sign of suffer from it, but to the world. obsession. There is no other way one can be so rigorous, so committed that everything else comes second. L’hypocrisie, c’est le fait d’agir délibérément de manière contraire à ce que l’on professe, c’est tenir un discours de façade pour faire bonne impression sans appliquer soi-même ce que l’on défend.

Vous voyez, typiquement, je vais critiquer le fait que nous n’assumons pas nos opinions politiques et pourtant, j’écris cet article anonymement ! Alors bien-sûr, vous pourriez me rétorquer ‘’Practise what you Preach’’, me dire que moi-même je n’ose pas parler ouvertement et que je ne peux donc donner aucune leçon. Et bien oui, vous auriez tout à fait raison, mais ne vous ai-je pas dit être le premier des hypocrites ?

Alors oui, nous ne sommes qu’une bande d’hypocrites méprisants, pétris de pseudo-convictions et se mettant en scène soi-même afin de se donner bonne conscience.

Combien d’entre nous ont participé aux marches pour le climat (avant d’en poster les photos sur Insta), acheté des produits bio, acheté une gourde, et se sont

ainsi achetés une bonne conscience ? Car il ne faut pas se tromper : aucune de ces actions (certes honorables) ne compense d’une quelconque manière l’impact écologiquement désastreux de notre manière de vivre.

Oui, hypocrites lorsque nous prétendons nous préoccuper de la planète et que nous nous vautrons devant Netflix et nos plateformes de streaming qui produisent autant de CO2 que la France… Oui hypocrites lorsque nous prétendons sur Internet nous offusquer de la chasse mais que l’on continue à acheter en supermarché notre poulet aux hormones, élevé dans le noir dans une cage de 30 cm par 30cm.

Et combien d’entre nous n’assument pas leurs idées politiques par lâcheté et par bassesse ? Combien d’entre vous se disent féministes alors que ce n’est qu’une manière de se faire bien voir des femmes tandis que, dans leur dos, vous les jugez comme on juge du bétail ? Combien d’entre nous se disent de gauche, se disent préoccupés du sort des plus pauvres, tout en ayant pour seul et principal objectif de vie de se faire le plus d’argent possible ? Regardez la vidéo de notre rentrée solennelle : nous serions donc tous de gauche ?

Laissez-moi rire ! La vérité c’est que nous ne sommes qu’une bande de libéraux embourgeoisés et méprisants. Même les communistes de ce campus ont des IPhones X. Et nous méprisons la pauvreté et les pauvres, et nous méprisons ceux votant pour l’extrême droite car nous sommes absolument déconnectés de leur réalité. Et puis nous méprisons les vieux, et nous méprisons ceux qui ont des convictions et nous nous méprisons mutuellement, en secret.

hortly after the start of the revolution/intifada/movement/protests, or as some of us like to call it, the October revolution, the banks shut their doors for two weeks and Riyad Salemeh, the Lebanese Central Bank governor, told CNN that “Lebanon is days away from economic collapse”. Well, while Sherlock tried to scare Lebanese people that were sick of their blood being sucked by a corrupt political class, and costing the state millions of dollars every day by taking it to the streets and closing off the roads, little did he know that his turn was coming.

But before guillotining Riri and the stinky rich corrupt political “elite”, let’s try to understand the complicated financial and economic system in Lebanon.

Economics professor Layal Mansour describes the Lebanese economy as a “child with special needs” having a special rhythm that can’t

be compared to developed countries’ economies. This “child with special needs” is born in the early 90’s with the dollarization of our economy. “Dollarized” means using both of the currencies: Lebanese pounds and dollars. In Lebanon, you can pay your groceries with both dollars and Lebanese pounds and receive the exchange in both currencies too. For my Lebanese compatriots, this sounds very natural. But in other countries, this behavior is considered to be a black market and is punishable. This dollarization of the Lebanese economy certainly has advantages. Otherwise we would’ve never adopted it. However, its negative outcomes are many and make it a very fragile economy. The problem with Lebanon’s debts is not its astronomical number. Japan’s debt is way bigger yet it’s never perceived as a problem. The problem with Lebanon’s debt is the fact that it’s in dollars, and guess what? We don’t print or control dollars value since it’s not

our national currency. Bel englize el mshabra7, Layal Mansour defines the dollarization as a “lack of trust in the Lebanese pound”. The rate of dollarization in Lebanon is more than 73%. Which means, according to her, that the rate of lack of trust in the Lebanese pound is more than 73%. The higher the rate, the less the Lebanese trust in their currency. So yes, Lebanese people have trust issues when it comes to their economy. But why did the BDL allow its own currency to be so untrusted?

In the 90’s, Lebanon came out of a very long and bloody civil war with big economic, security and political stability challenges. Lebanese people had very little trust in their economy and government, and the country was facing a high inflation.

Introducing dollars in the economy has encouraged Lebanese people to invest and buy real estates. So this is how it goes inside a Lebanese’s head: “the dollar is not our curren-

cy, so the state can’t print out dollars and it can’t devalue it nor use it to pay its debts. Investing in dollars will keep my money safe and out of risks”. But the danger is that loans are in dollars and our stock of dollars is unstable and unguaranteed. 40% of our loans are in dollars.

the Lebanese pound, and because it was riskier to put them in Lebanese pounds. For example, let’s say that the interest rate of a loan in Lebanese pounds would be of 10%, while a loan in dollars would be of 6%.

Our rich politicians who ironically own more than 40% of the banks assets, and who obviously don’t need loans, would take million dollars’ loans from Riri at a 6% interest rate, then exchange their money in Lebanese pounds to benefit from a higher interest rate (10%).

Which means that you will have to pay back 5 300 000 dollars to the BDL, but the person/bank/entity/corporation who will borrow the money from you in Lebanese pounds will pay you back +10% of the money (which means 5 500 000 dollars worth of Lebanese pounds). 5 500 000 –5 300 000=200 000. In return, Lebanese people have the electricity cut for 5 to 12 hours a day (depending on the region, the season, and of how much politicians robbed off the public funds), to have the water cut, to have no free healthcare, horrible infrastructures, no public transportations except the ancient buses, bad public education program, no insurance for the elderly, no job opportunities, and I can go on for hours. So there is indeed money funding the state, but the state is not providing anything in return. So where did our money go? In the pockets of whom? Hmmmmm...hard riddle.

Lebanon’s empty restaurants, empty shops and empty shelves smell the anxiety and hopelessness about the present and the future. Beirut’s streets resonate the cries of despair, of suffering, of hunger and tiredness.

Beirut’s walls covered with graffiti, its vandalized luxurious shops and banks scream “the city is for the people”. Beirut’s skyscrapers, yacht club and luxurious downtown hide a mother’s tears mourning her son whose debts made him kill himself. They hide a Syrian child who was almost going to throw himself off a building because he’s hopeless and tired of working all day and getting beaten up for not bringing money home. Beirut’s pretty neighborhoods silence the employers and workers lining up in a queue for hours to withdraw their hardly earned money from the banks, and a million families struggling to pay their rent and children’s schools. Beirut’s poor suburbs, Palestinian camps and slums are screaming from the top of their lungs “Inequalities”.

So down with the ruling of the banks. Down with the ruling of the corrupt rich. Listen to the streets expressing its anger, reclaiming its dignity and no longer accepting to suffer, closing off the roads, burning tires, breaking the banks façades and fancy shops owned by their oppressors. You can’t make a revolution in white gloves. So take it to the streets. Revolt. Everything in this world can be robbed except the love for life and human dignity. Today, sectarianism has proven that it’s weaker than class divisions. Today we no longer ask for our sectarian rights that won’t feed the hungry.

Yann: I’ve been involved in activities surrounding refugee issues for a long time. When I was younger, I didn’t fully grasp the nuances of the refugee crisis. I would talk about it with friends, but none of us fully comprehended the complexity of the topic. Our ignorance was essentially a motivator for me to become more informed on the issue. So when I was seventeen, I travelled for one month from Lampedusa to Paris in

Kayla: Are you able to share any information on the status of the refugee camp in Ventimiglia? I heard there were talks earlier this year regarding the possibility of closing the camp. Could you share an update for anyone that’s not involved with our association?

Yann: My name is Yann Guillo, and I’m currently a 2A. I’m an econ major, and I’m the president of Sciences Po Refugee Help for this year. Oh, also, I’m from Brittany!

t was five PM but the sky was already black.

The omnipresent rain splattered against the car window as we drove past Putney Station. The smug man on the radio announces that Qasem Soleimani has been assassinated, and my mum responds “good”. I was extremely confused, “what do you mean, ’good’?”. This action breached the whole principle of national sovereignty. It is inviting retaliation from the Revolutionary Guard hotheads. It is the first step into the often-walked path of war with the Middle-East. This is what they have always wanted: destabilisation in the Middle-East. Do you want them to do to Iran what they did to Iraq? Libya?

Afghanistan? Syria?

“But we need to get rid of these akhoonds1 somehow. Didn’t you see how many times the people protested? And how the Basij2 attacked them and shot them? How they killed your father’s cousin?

How they set fire to the banks and blamed it on the people? They are like cancer, and if the only way to get rid of them is through a war, then be it.”

Hearing my own mother, who lived through the revolution, who lived through the Iran-Iraq war, who lost her father to the trauma of that war, say these words, sent an ice-cold shiver through my body. Of all people, if she didn’t know how terrible this war would be, then who would? It didn’t take much before I rationalised the opposition to this war, and by the time we got home she was totally against it; she even joined me in an anti-war protest at Downing Street, yelling all of the chants way louder than me; clearly a revolution is good practice for chanting loudly.

Although her initial stance horrified me, it reminded me of a very legitimate dilemma. For, at the end of the day, I am almost completely detached from the suffering caused by this regime, whilst she has lost family, friends, and neighbours to it. It is very easy for me to scream short Taylor Swift-level catchy chants like “no war with Iran!”, but it is far less easy for me to scream “let’s create structural reform and domestically-induced regime change!”. Like ok cool, no one wants war, but what do we want? That is the difficult question, because in reality that is the only question. That is why when I asked Emma Dent Coad, former Labour MP for Kensington, what her Party’s policy on Iran’s regime actually is, I was able to say “that doesn’t in the slightest answer my question” to her response which was: We are listening to what the Iranian residents of Kensington actually want, we have been holding meetings with residents to listen to them…blah… blah…blah.3

Cette déclaration est le miroir de l’atmosphère de compromission imprégnant la sphère de la gouvernance sous toutes ses formes, jusque sur l’échiquier géopolitique.

Les coulisses peu reluisantes du théâtre géopolitique abritent en effet les trames d’opérations souterraines, estampillées sous le sceau de la “raison d’État”. Nos gouvernants attachent la “raison d’État” au salut de la nation en vue de justifier leurs offensives funestes sur la scène internationale. La “raison d’État” s’avère être un instrument d’anesthésie d’une opinion publique rétive à tout déploiement de leur pays sur un front de guerre.

Machiavel a souligné qu’un chef d’État doit se défaire du costume humaniste face aux épées de Damoclès flottant au-dessus de la sécurité de l’État ; mais sous des masques hypocrites, la “sécurité de l’Etat” se retrouve galvaudée, puisque rimant avec les intérêts d’une poignée de nantis.

Les menaces inexorables de l’arcana imperii et du ratio status sont presque inextinguibles. ans certains pays de l’Afrique de l’Ouest comme de l’Est, l’hégémonie présidentielle est un enjeu politique prégnant car elle procure des privilèges et un confort que certains hommes politiques africains conservent en violant la Constitution en vigueur ou à travers des référendums. Ainsi, l’hégémonie présidentielle devient une source d’instabilité politique et sociale. Le Président use de sa fonction pour déstabiliser et instrumentaliser les autres institutions : le Parlement et la Justice. La seule solution est le soulèvement des peuples dans le but de dénoncer et de contrer l’avènement d’un régime autoritaire représentant un danger pour la Démocratie, la Liberté et le développement socio-économique, parfois en vain.

Situé entre le continent africain et Madagascar, au nord du canal de Mozambique dans l’Océan Indien, l’archipel des Comores n’échappe pas à la règle. Cet archipel est composé de quatre îles (le département français de Mayotte ainsi que les Îles Autonomes de Grande Comore, d’Anjouan et de Mohéli) et peuplé par les Shirazis (un groupe ethnique issu de l’Afrique de l’Est parlant swahili, habitant dans les îles de Pemba, de Zanzibar et des Comores et pratiquent l’Islam sunnite et chiite) et Arabes ; ce qui justifie la présence de l’Union des Comores (Grande Comore, Anjouan et Mohéli) au sein du CICIBA (Centre International des Civilisations Bantu), de l’Union Africaine et de la Ligue

Certains médias et intellectuels comoriens s’excitent à analyser ces soulèvements qualifiés d’« inédits » et « historiques », sans s’interroger sur l’impact de ceux-ci vis-à-vis du pouvoir en place. Ils oublient surtout de se poser la question suivante : pourquoi le régime comorien, à mi-chemin entre la démocratie et la dictature, reste inflexible face à une intensification des protestations à son encontre ? Quelles sont les erreurs à éviter afin de mener à bien cette révolte populaire au nom de la démocratie et du développement socio-économique de l’Union des Comores ? Existe-il une spécificité comorienne pour expliquer cela ?

ast week, I went to see “Mon Chien Stupide” by Yvan Attal. It was a pretty good film, and I would probably recommend it. I related to the poignant emotional journey the characters were on. I liked the curated photography and the earth tone color palette. It was, overall, a well-made movie. However, maybe because it was so sur-

prisingly good on all other fronts, recognizing the same backward jokes used in cheap French comedy movies in use here was shocking.

Seeing this movie made me realize that the humor I had previously assumed to be confined to a specific genre of truly dumb film, was actually very widespread within French cinema. Racism, sexism and homophobia are the groundwork for everything that is supposed to be funny to a French audience, no matter the standard of the film.

For those fortunate enough not to be familiar with the topic, let me give you an example from this movie.

“Mon Chien Stupide” is an adaptation from John Fante’s book “My Dog Stupid”. It is the story of how a frustrated writer’s family life is disrupted by a huge, ugly grey dog moving in. The writer, Henri, has been yearning for change and blaming his family for his unhappiness. The dog, which goes by the name Stupid, fulfills his wishes by causing all of his four children to move out one after another, and destroying his marriage. In the

When we hear a joke, we laugh. It’s natural. But it is enlightening to take a second to reflect on what makes it funny. What are the implications behind the joke?

Economic: Poverty seems like a problem simply innate to humans. So innate, that even the Bible, the Quran, Sikhism’s Guru Granth Sahib, and the Hindu parables of the Vedas happen to discuss it. But much to the disbelief of these Holy Books, poverty is dramatically declining. Much of our progress owes its debts to the fall of Berlin Wall and the beginning of globalization.

If the media we absorb ourselves in was truly unbiased and objective, Steven Pinker argues, the extraordinary fact, that “number of people in extreme poverty fell by 137,000 since yesterday every day for the last twenty-five years” would be screening on the television, but it doesn’t.

This in no way makes anything better as people die regardless. Nevertheless, it shows the astonishing fact that it is not the scarcity of food or relatively unavoidable incidents that are causing these deaths but the sheer overabundance of food.

our health services. What is astonishing nevertheless, is how long it took us to reach this period. Lifespans oddly fell in Europe through 1850-1880’s (Max Roser, OWID) due to a neglect of health improvement driven by imperial neglect more so than anything else, but since 1900, have doubled or more around the world, including Africa and Asia, where the gains were most significant (Max Roser, OWID). This increase has persisted even more so in recent decades, with life expectancy increasing to more than six years in the last two decades, and – thanks to regulations and technological improvements – accidental deaths (car crashes, lightning strikes) are in steep decline (Joshua Rothman, The New Yorker). While despite what we’re told, students today report (taking into account the abundance of research today) being less lonely than in the past (Joshua Rothman, The New Yorker). Child mortality has fallen more than half since 1990; 69% in India and 83% in China (UN.Org). Whilst we have rarer cases of death in childbirth, less teen pregnancies, increasingly taller generations, decrease in smoking and increasing vaccines available globally (Max Roser, OWID). No, I am not going to make an Anti-Vax joke, although I really want to.

The majority of terrorist attacks that have taken place in Europe and North America are the result of Far-Right and Far-Left groups at 19%, in comparison to attacks perpetrated

Index, 2017). Homicide rate in Europe shows a steep decline from 32/100,000 in 1600’s to just 1.4/100,000 today (Max Roser, OWID), despite the growing population. Nuclear Proliferation, although still a sensitive issue, has seen an overall decline from its peak in 1986, at 70,300 active warheads to 3,750 active today (Status of World Nuclear Forces, Federation of American Scientists) after the decline of American and Russian stockpiles, and voluntary submission from countries such as Belarus, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Ukraine.

Freedom and Social Services: It is increasingly hard to measure freedom quantitively, but political freedom has unarguably made progress. Given the emergence of populist leaders and new dictators around the world, it is easy to forget the political freedoms and civil liberties many people enjoy today in developed and increasingly developing countries. Autocracies outnumbered democracies by a considerable margin in the 1970’s and ‘80s, and as recently as 1993, the majority of the world’s population lived in autocracies (Max Roser, OWID). Today, more than half of the global population lives in democracies, and the majority living in autocracy, 4 out of 5 specifically live in one country, China (Dylan Mathews, Vox, 2019).

If it weren’t for China, the statistics would be much better, not gonna lie. Exceptions obviously exist as political progress is highly susceptible to change and infrequencies due to it being malleable. Changing political climates, and the attitude of one leader or various policy-makers can cause unpredictable outbreaks, such as the Suleimani Assassination, Hong Kong Protests or even predictable longstanding conflicts such as the continuous struggle in Israel/Palestine, Syria, Iran and Venezuela. However, it doesn’t take away the unavoidable fact that political progress, i.e. the increasing realization of civil rights and political partici-

pation, has been real in most countries in comparison to that of the “good old days”. Education has also dramatically increased. Literacy over the last two centuries has gone from a tiny elite to a world where 8 out 10 people can read and write. Progress has been made in reducing racial gaps in literacy as well. In 1890, 80% of African Americans, aged 14 or older were illiterate.

His claim is ambitious and based on assumption, but much necessary for change.

So, for our sake, let’s close some of the tabs we have opened in our heads - on every existing issue possible – and reflect on the great progress we’ve made as people. ZS
