PREFACE

Each time I put pencil to paper in order to organize the outpouring of thoughts and ideas which are trying to break boundaries and seek new paths, I feel a sense of joy amid the mass of intersecting pencil-drawn lines before my eyes. Although these lines may at times seem disjointed or crooked, that in itself provides the opportunity to learn and improve. Ultimately, we reach our objective with a house design that caters to the needs of our clients as closely as possible. If one were to measure the cumulative length of all the pencil lines put to paper in a single design, one might find that it amounts to thousands or even tens of thousands of meters. With each stroke, the imagination is stretched, ideas are honed and concepts take shape. There may seem to be nothing extraordinary that makes one pencil stroke stand out from the others, but we believe that each stroke that we draw is imbued with an abundance amalgamation of experiences and is a foundation from which we create maximum benefit. Occasionally we are challenged to create something new and embark upon an unfamiliar path. As the pencil strokes evolve, the design takes on a different life as the drawing is enhanced through the use of additional drawing techniques and mediums. As intent changes, quick bold strokes may turn to delicate lines with minute attention to detail created at a slower pace. Experimentation leads to novel techniques offering new, impressive results. This journey of the pen, so to speak, has led us to the creation of the extraordinary house designs in the past two to three years. From the point where the pencil first touches the paper, the line continues stroke by stroke until the end point where the house is successfully completed. That is the point where the designer and the homeowner look upon the manifestation of the numerous strokes they created together with pride and joy. Kiattisak Veteewootacharn Managing Director

H-INTRODUCTION

EX: Extraordinary The extraordinary thing about housing design is that it involves meticulous attention to detail. This is a huge challenge for the inexperienced designer who has yet to develop an acute understanding of the elements of good house design. Any graduate architect can aesthetically design a beautiful house. But beneath that beauty must lie careful planning of space, details and interfaces which are honed from experience. A veteran architect is able to spot flaws or potential issues immediately and provide good solutions. A49HD focuses on housing design. Working conscientiously with the homeowner, our team of specialist designers, strive to create the perfect home. An architect may be able to design a house single-handedly, but a team of designers with specialist experience in a range of disciplines working in collaboration, yields the best results. We continue to gather a variety of specialist designers within our company and collaborate with other affiliated companies of the 49Group, for example the 49 Group lighting designers, LD49. In the past, architects normally specify light fixtures according to basic design theories. With an established LD49 studio, we have had the opportunity to collaborate with them on a number of projects. This has resulted in an in-depth understanding of the principles of lighting design resulting a more comprehensive lighting design process.

With regard to personal experience, I enjoy every step of the design process. Admittedly, when I was a new graduate, it was challenging to produce suitable design details that required a degree of practical experience in the field. However, by consulting with more experienced architects and specialists, I was able to understand the principles of good design. Over time, I accumulated knowledge and experience by putting theory into practice by adapting designs until I established my own style. A49HD has a considerable number of experienced staff who all have a passion for designing magnificent houses. The lighting contractors that we have selected to work with also have a similar passion for building houses and are of course, experts in their field. One might be able to discern if a house was designed by a novice or a veteran designer by the attention to planning and the detail of design. A designer with less experience may design a house complete with all the rooms and spaces a standard house would have However, a seasoned designer would utilize his knowledge and experience to design a functional home tailored to meet the full requirements of the residents. Visual appearances are not difficult to design and many homes can be picture perfect. However, the overwhelming feeling of a comfortable home requires the understanding of an experienced designer in order to create.

The strength of the A49HD team lies in its number of celebrated and experienced designers who actively transmit their expertise to upcoming members of the team through practice in the office and in the field. They also learn from the feedback gained from homeowners who have the direct experience of living in the house. This mutual exchange of knowledge builds a vast repository of experiences. Our designers aim for each home to have its own unique character. We are constantly seeking out new ideas and striving to create a “wow factor” in all our designs. As with all new and unexplored frontiers, unforeseen issues may arise. However, the wealth of experience within our team enables us to apply our knowledge and expertise to address these issues, resolve them promptly and uphold the high standards of A49HD designs. One such experience is the design of the Gable House featured in this publication. Faced with the challenge of a number of limitations such as specific roof form, height and materials, we were able to look deeper into the details and come up with creative design solutions while still adhering to the strict regulations. For example, we used unique patterns to create character and added a modern twist to the gable roof form with an ultra-sleek design. There is always a level of satisfaction when standing within a design that has come to fruition. But the true level of success is measured by the residents’ satisfaction after living in the home for some time. We often receive feedback about areas or elements that they like or dislike and these are noted to continuously improve our designs. Many architects who have had the opportunity to view our designs, comment that the beautiful photos do not do justice to the true ambience of the residence. The extraordinary sense of A49HD’s design and attention to detail can only be experienced and appreciated in person. Our designs lean towards minimalism, but in that simplicity, there is order. EX: Expertise The A49 Housing Group is grounded in and specializes in housing design. Nithi Sthapitanonda, the founder of Architects 49 Limited, sought to form a team of experienced individuals who would specialize exclusively in housing design. This resulted in the formation of A49HD. The A49HD team works with precise attention to detail alongside architects and interior designers, honing their knowledge and accumulating experience through collaborations with other group entities. Each client’s unique lifestyle and preferences are added to our collective pool of expertise, forming a collective design basis for our individual outcomes. Our wealth of experience enables us to advise the best outcomes to suit each client. A49HD’s expertise is not limited to architecture and interior design but encompasses all home systems, including lighting design. Experienced specialist design consultants consider every element of a comfortable home to meet the needs of the clients and cater to their lifestyle. As such, each home is tailor-made for its residents. “We create comfortable havens for our clients through highly functional designs.” Good Mechanical Electrical and Plumbing systems (MEP) are an important element of design that contribute to creating a comfortable home environment. A49HD works closely with mechanical, sanitation and electrical engineers to provide the best solution for the client. These are often functions that the client has not envisaged from the outset. However, they are fundamental elements of a home. Through experience and expertise, A49HD can advise the best solutions to suit the client’s requirements. For example, the homeowner may want the bedroom to be especially quiet or place great importance on privacy and security. In such cases, a split system air conditioner would be installed, allowing it to be serviced from outside the house. A49HD can also provide advice on home automation systems. As designers, A49HD always stay up to date with the latest developments in order to provide the best consultation service to their clients. Extensive experience has allowed them to garner knowledge in a range of areas from lighting design to Feng Shui. Some clients engage Feng Shui masters to provide guidance on the most auspicious design. This collaborative experience has enabled A49HD to design homes for clients in accordance with basic Feng Shui principles. We apply fundamentals such as not placing the bed head to the west or towards the bathroom so as not to be disturbed by unpleasant sounds. Attention is also given to the direction of the stairs, location of doors and the placement of bathrooms in relation to the main entrance. These aspects are taken into consideration in all of A49HD’s house designs.

An example of this is Gable House and is featured in this book. As entertaining friends and guests at home is an important part of the client’s lifestyle, the layout of the house was designed such that the entertainment area and the private quarters were clearly separated. The house provides an open and welcoming atmosphere for guests, but at the same time ensuring privacy in the main living quarters. These two areas are connected by a central veranda/terrace. The entertainment area also houses a home theater complete with a full acoustic system. The shell was designed to provide soundproofing of the room and to minimize the effects of reverberation on the structure. When in use, there is no disturbance to the other residents in the home or neighboring house in the housing estate. The Defined House also sought to make the most of its seaside location. However, the direction with the best view was also exposed to direct sunlight. In order to provide protection from heat and light infiltration, optical film was applied to the windows and super sheer curtains were installed. Lake House is another home with an interesting client requested element. The design included an indoor climbing wall, which is a first for A49HD’s house designs. The designers studied the functions required and method of installation in order to apply the design for home use. These are but a few examples of the range of expertise that A49HD has honed and accumulated through decades of experience in unique, distinguished housing designs. Archanart Kespayak

EX: Extravaganza “Extravaganza — an elaborate and spectacular entertainment or performance” One could say that an extravaganza is the next step up from “extraordinary.” It is something stunningly unique. Dazzling architecture which impresses the masses can be regarded as an extravaganza. While we do not set out to create stunning or spectacular architecture, the lifestyle of our clients influences the design which creates the architectural extravaganza. Architectural extravaganza can manifest itself in a myriad of forms. Baroque era architecture was spectacular in its ornamentation. Today’s A49HD’s houses are stunning in their use of space and lifestyles which are highlights of the design. These spaces create the feeling of extravagance, not ornaments or luxuriant decorations. Residents’ special interests are what makes our house designs unique. Often the form and oversized spaces, allocated and designed to accommodate special interests, give the home an air of extravagance. A good example of this extravaganza of form and space is Infinity House. Designed in the form of the figure 8, this representation of an infinite loop was the foundation for us to develop a stunning design that embodied extravagance. The UNO House is another example of a multi-family home which, rather than a generic condominium-style residence, took the approach of sensory architecture integrated with vertical living. This multi-story home was designed such that the family members were able to see, hear and connect with one another while residing in the privacy of their individual floors. The “Character Extravaganza”

in which the ambiance and activities in each room could be viewed, highlighted the uniqueness of each space. Each of our designs is tailored to our clients’ requirements and reflects the unique character of its residents. The key to creating stunning designs lies in challenging ourselves to expand the boundaries of our knowledge in order to meet the novel requirements of our individual clients. UNO House was unprecedented in that we had not designed vertical living spaces previously. This allowed is to explore designs which had never before been applied by others in our field and turn the ordinary into the extravagant. Diagonal House is the second home of one of our clients whose previous home A49 had designed. This was another novel challenge for us to take generic elements of an urban house, such as the hipped roof, and add a new twist to it. We retained the A49HD design language, which our client found appealing, and tailored the layout and details. This provided the client with a feeling of familiarity amidst the new design. A sense of extravagance is imbued through the selection of ornamental brass elements throughout the house. This expresses the homeowner’s personal fancy and redesigned the character of the home by incorporating glitz and luster into the simple, tropical ambiance. These antique-style brass ornaments in a modern architectural setting, evoke a sense of evolving elegance. The nature of brass, with its color changes and appearance over time, creates an aesthetic of extravagant beauty and maturity as the years progress. As tree leaves transform from green to gold with the changing seasons, this home will exhibit a unique beauty through the passage of time. While the brass will change color and the woodwork will age, the dark stone surfaces retain their eternal gleam. All of these elements play out the never-ending drama of nature and time. Changing seasons are an extravaganza of nature and, in the same way, the anamorphosis of space is what makes the Diagonal House visually striking. The new design presents fresh solutions in vernacular architecture which is a trademark of A49HD homes. Not all architecture needs to be a stunning extravaganza. If we set out to create a masterpiece it can become forced rather than natural. Design should be free from forced expectation. Stunning residential architecture is born from the residents’ lifestyle and use of functional space, which in turn, enhances and highlights the design. If the homeowners enjoy an air of quietude, the living space exudes serenity. If the residents cherish exclusivity, our design reflects this as well. One could liken design to cooking. We cook to suit the palate of whom we cook for, and we do so to the best of our abilities utilizing our considerable expertise and experience. This intention of pleasing the palate, which is at the heart of one’s efforts, inevitably results in the creation of an exquisitely crafted extravaganza. We do not aim to design the best architecture in order to receive accolades, but rather we strive to capture the essence of the homeowners’ character and create a house that is a genuine expression of its residents. The perception of spectacular glitz, glamor and exclusivity is a reflection of the residents and their lifestyle. This is communicated through the inhabited space, the materials that surrounded them and by their very presence. Chana Sumpalung

EX: Expectation The past 2-3 years have brought about rapid changes in the overall architectural industry due to digital transformation together with new levels of intricacy in methodology and other design aspects. With the likelihood that current design approaches and solutions become redundant, the key is to go beyond what is expected, or to “expect the unexpected.” Such challenges and a changing environment, create a new paradigm which is spurring a wave of unique house designs. This transformation is the essence of this “Extraordinary” book “HDX”. A focus on our client’s well-being and utilizing a philosophical approach reflecting the essence and purpose of being, remains the basis of A49HD’s housing designs. Taking into consideration the various expectations of our clients, results in a unique residential design that is captivating in its modernity, sophistication and character. Of course expectations and aspirations come in many and varied forms. our aspiration is to exceed expectations. This usually pertains to physical and/or visual aspects of the design. A unique form or space that is instantly recognizable and etched into one’s memory. A scene that can be shared on social media which creates optimum impact. Communication today is predominantly visual and symbolic, expressed through Instagram shots, hero shots, visual impact, wow spaces and even Check-in images. The Gable House, for example, has an entrance that resembles an upside-down red carpet. This continuous ceiling acts as a line leading towards the main door. Its courtyard design is also analogous to an oasis in the heart of the house, surrounded by a large multifunctional terrace. The stairs and glass elevator are designed using structural techniques to make it sleek and lightweight, creating an appearance of weightlessness. The Bat Man Cave’s garage (Bianco-Nero House) design resembles a hovering, black spaceship. A49HD envisioned a shift in lifestyle due to the energy crisis and designed the garage complete with EV Chargers for modern electric cars.

Another example is the Hidden House, where the Check-in setting is a white stairwell in the center of the Museum Hall. Light filtering in from above makes it appear as if it leads up to a spaceship or may even be the “Stairway to Heaven.” Expectation that arises from transforming limitations into opportunities is clearly illustrated in the Gable House. This had limitations placed on it by various neighborhood and local district restrictions. These included height restrictions as well a mandatory gable roof with a specified tile and color. Designers were able to transform these apparent limitations into a new modern aesthetic and create a home with optimal functionality. Remarkably, this unique house simultaneously stands out from and blends in with its neighboring environment. Expectations of life and the residence amidst the uncertainty and unpredictability of the future. The Covid-19 pandemic and the worsening PM2.5 pollution in 2020 has prompted a move towards more adaptive spaces. Designs which accommodate future adaptation without the need for changes to the structure or MEP services has become a new standard for housing design in the New Normal and Next Normal era. The Hidden House is a good example of where all spaces are multifunctional and can be transformed into adaptable or flexible spaces in the future. Additionally, a dedicated Hygienic Space is provided at the main and side entrances. These are open to more natural ventilation and sunlight. The library or multipurpose room on the second floor can also be transformed into a study or a meeting room for working from home. These are important issues that present design challenges which must be addressed henceforth. Rattawut Chansritrakul

EX: Exclusive A49HD are specialists in housing design with more than 30 years of experience serving long-standing, high-end clientele. The special functions and requirements of these exclusive homes, motivates us to explore and expand upon our design boundaries, resulting in the exclusivity of our work.

Another distinctive characteristic of our designs is the seamless merging of interior and exterior spaces. This is achieved through dedicated collaboration between architects and interior designers to ensure the continuity of interior and exterior space functions, designs and materials. This has become a hallmark of A49HD.

Our creative us of space, attention to detail and use of high-quality materials, sets our designs apart from other houses. Our clients’ lifestyles inspire us to create a unique atmosphere utilizing materials and space reflecting the residents requirements.

Interior design is largely determined by the residents’ lifestyle and interests. Rather than presenting our own grand ideas, we take time to listen to our clients and build our designs around them to their requirements. Often their unique interests and preferences are incorporated into the design of other areas of the home. These small details create a continuous theme and an exclusive overall representation of the residents. For example, one client requested in indoor basketball and badminton court so they could have a game whenever they wished in the comfort of their own home. Another client had a requirement for a fish tank to house their sharks and jelly fish. “Surprising Space” is born from these unprecedented and somewhat extravagant requests but, when transformed into functional space, highlights the reason that many clients engage A49HD to design their homes.

Although an efficient use of space is a key element of housing design, we feel that a sense of spaciousness is also important within home. The sometimes apparent frivolous spaciousness of our designs, creates an exclusive aura which is much appreciated by our clients. In addition, we have the opportunity to explore the incorporation of many new materials and design details, positioning us at the forefront of our field. Our clients’ varied lifestyles and interests has presented many opportunities for us to gather new design experiences. Some examples of these are the design of an indoor archery range or basement shooting range, and even an underground aircraft hangar. These, and many more examples, have contributed to our design repository over the years. One particular design that vividly comes to mind is a house we designed 15 years ago for a client who had just returned from England. The clients were impressed by a glass staircase they had seen linking the various areas of the building and requested us to design one for their home. They also had an aversion to house geckos in the house and requested completely smooth walls without any crevasses where geckos might hide. We worked together with the structural engineers and suppliers exploring possible designs for the glass stairs. For the walls, we suggested the use of imitation stone cladding. These could be installed without visible joints and the material also prevents lizards’ feet from gripping the surface of the wall.

Designing a space to cater to these special interests is a challenge that requires us to continuously research and expand the breadth of our knowledge. We consult specialists and those experienced in that field. Such in-depth study enables us to respond to our client’s requirements and create highly satisfactory functional and aesthetic spaces. Two such examples of this are Defined House and Diagonal House. Defined House was designed to be a holiday home. We worked closely with the interior designers selecting materials to make a more exclusive home. We also agreed on a sandy white color scheme. Although various materials were used throughout the design, these were selected to conform to the overall tone. Imitation stone was selected to match the tone, and even the glazing reflection was white. These various textures and shades of different materials in the same color creates a dimension.

Diagonal House is also a holiday home and clearly expresses the integration of architecture and interior design. The rhythm of patterns and lines on the exterior elements are repeated in the interior with subtle changes denoting the two spaces. This flow effectively conveys the designer’s concepts. Materials such as wood, steel and ceramic/ stone tiles create an organic look exuding a resort-style atmosphere. The Diagonal House may appear modest, but the exclusivity of this house lies in details of the design. Each house expresses its story in its own unique way. There is no hard and fast rule on which area is to be the design showcase. This is determined by the space, light and shadow of each site. We then design to highlight and enhance these characteristics. However, one of the key areas we focus on is the master bedroom where we like to create a wow space. The main living room is also one of the important showcase areas in the home. The house layout is a signature feature of our designs. Often our clients have previously experienced the ambiance of one of our house designs and seek to engage us to design their own home. Though the general allocation of space may be somewhat similar, added functions and carefully selected loose furniture create the unique character that sets each home apart. One may conclude that the exclusivity of our designs lies in our ability to create unconventional functional space. Our keenly detailed material selection also creates a continuity of the architectural language in the interior and exterior spaces. Experience and capacity to design oversized spaces has opened opportunities to design ever larger areas. This is another aspect that sets A49HD apart in our field. Kriangsak Srikomolsilp

EX: Exploration The name of this book came about as we have been engaged with a series of unique homes which stand out both in form and function. These were designed to meet our clients’ requirements and special interests. The resulting homes featured in this book, reflect the character of their residents and are distinctly extraordinary.

Each project must of course be completed within a set timeframe. A49HD always places importance on experimentation with various design elements such as spatial layouts and lighting. With our extensive experience, this is accomplished within the set timeframe through effective time management.

Design involves exploration and experimentation. In architectural school, we learnt how to apply architectural theory in order to create a range of different buildings to meet the required functions. However, this method cannot be applied directly when it comes to house design.

This approach to design has allowed us to create an archive of best practice. Each experimental design is based on a level of confidence accumulated from past experiences and successful results. These can be applied to future projects and adapted to suit the requirements of each client. We continue to develop new design solutions and as our repository of knowledge and experience grows, we become increasingly better equipped to address issues which arise and improve the efficiency of our design process.

Exploration and experimentation are fundamental in our house designs and is driven by the novel and particular requirement of our clients. For example, the owner of Lake House wanted a Universal Design with wheelchair access throughout the house. We expanded on this basic requirement and designed a home which clearly expressed the residents’ characters. Generally, Universal Design tends to evoke the image of a public building. Through exploration and experimentation, we sought to create a design which perfectly merged the accessibility of a public building with the comforts of a home. When it comes to material selection, we favor natural materials such as stone or wood as they offer a more refined and homely feel. Limited natural resources, high prices and the burden of maintenance have however prompted many homeowners to opt for alternative materials. Synthetic materials are often associated with offices or commercial buildings. But, with careful selection and incorporating a variety of materials, we can create a residential atmosphere. During design, issues often arise with regard to design details. These are addressed by the team who establish a suitable design scale which enhances the balanced integration of the selected materials.

Prior to construction, we present our designs through diagrams, detail sketches and 3D modeling. During construction, we work closely with suppliers and other parties to find the best approaches and solutions to bring our design to fruition. Comments are considered and taken onboard as we work to achieve the best all-round design. These designs are then developed into shop drawings and mockups to analyze any details we may be unsure of 3D models, physical models and animation are also used to review space and ambience. All aspects are taken into consideration in order to meet our clients’ requirements and create a highly functional home. Woranol Sattayavinij

“Our family is introverted. We value and enjoy our privacy and rarely socialize. Consequently, we would not want anyone from the outside being able to look in at us. But amongst ourselves, we have a very enjoyable rapport. Therefore, we would like to be able to separate the formal public living room from the family living area while providing the ability for the occasional sneak peek”. That was the initial conversation between the house owner and A49HD 5 years ago. Following that initial discussion, the designer focused on the owner’s requirements creating a unique concept for the project. The zoning requirements of public and private areas became one of the key design concepts. A U-shaped arrangement was found to be the best solution to achieve the architect’s hypothesis in terms of layout and composition. There are separate public and private entrances. A covered living terrace acts as a transitional space and buffer zone between the formal and family living areas. The swimming pool, situated at the rear of the grey travertine wall, also serves to distance the public and private areas. Thus, if the formal living area is utilised for a function, the family living room can be occupied without disturbance and remain private. The name “Hidden House” is derived from the appearance of the front façade which gives little clue as to what lies beyond, perhaps even to the extent of being unwelcoming or non-existent. Solid walls are used to shield the interior spaces from neighbours and provide privacy. In contrast, the solid façade allows for the house within its boundaries to have an open layout with more fenestration as the privacy has largely been achieved by the solid external walls. One of the key visuals in this residence is the sculptural main staircase, dubbed “a stairway to heaven.” It resembles a piece of art conveying a spectacle of anti-gravity. A sense of dynamism is created in the transitional landing space, where the lower flight of stairs, which appear to sprout from the ground, meets the flight of stairs which seem to float down from the upper floor. This striking visual is created through a feat of engineering. Light filtering in from the slim skylight and tapered ceiling above creates a play of shifting light and shadow throughout the day. The animated light breathes life into the space, like dancers moving to the rhythm of music.

The more “start” we engage with in the hectic world outside, the more we “pause” to appreciate the passive, organized cocoon of our private lives. Such is the paradox of the digital world. In this smart residence, the sense of simplicity, together with the clean and clear lines, create this “pause” environment. The basic and minimalistic composition of this house is of 3 cubes and a wall. The cubes is arranged to form an asymmetrical H-shape. The ivory vertical plane is akin to the skeleton of the house as it gradually penetrates throughout, creating a clearer sense of continuity and emphasizing the main circulation spaces. This wall also acts as a welcoming element in front of the house while simultaneously maintaining internal privacy when viewed from outside, as well as shielding the views of differently styled adjacent dwellings. The focal point of this house is the double-volume space of the stair hall. This in-between space effectively separates the public and private areas. The stair itself distinctively explores the antigravity concept as the treads cantilever from the ivory travertine wall. Walking through this narrow corridor, a good view is enjoyed of the enclosed courtyard from the oversized window. The minimalist expression of both interior and exterior spaces of this house are harmonized through the monotone white interior, transparent elements and material choices of the public space. This concept of continuity is also applied to the private spaces, achieving a sense of serenity and spaciousness.

Situated in a high-end housing project, the Gable House has been designed such that it appears camouflaged within its environment. Although located close to urban public infrastructure and a local community of low-density dwellings, it fits well into the high quality, natural urban environment. Local regulations have influenced many aspects of the design including height restrictions, material choices, colour scheme, open space ratio and the roof form. Warm grey tiles covering a gable roof structure provide the key external visual effect and sense of harmonisation with the surroundings. Its name, “Gable House,” is derived from this most visually recognisable roof form. The specific challenge of this house design was creating and developing the design in the direction of modern Thai architecture, while heeding the codes of the local community. Thus, the designer focused on implementing both tropical and sophisticated modern Thai design concepts. The central courtyard design epitomises the traditional Thai house and gives rise to the creative combination of both positive spaces of the geometric building and the negative space of the central swimming pool. The layout of this “C” shaped mass effectively allows both natural light and natural ventilation into the house interior. Timber battens on the ceiling of the drop-off area and main entrance are designed to be a metaphorical “red carpet” which lead through to the main area of the house. This, coupled with the “Stone Tunnel” effect as the walkway passes through a series of vestibules, creates a stunning welcome. This dramatic visual and the contrast of light

and dark, is the key visual effect of this house. The pleasant lightness at the end of the passage is especially successful in terms of orientation and the sense of direction. Moreover, this enigmatic entranceway creates an exciting sense of journey and impending discovery along the way. On the second floor, wooden louvres act as a double skin providing a sense of privacy, especially where neighbours are in close proximity. The louvres accentuate the gable form conveying a unique character and creating an eye-catching front façade while in harmony with the surrounding large trees and other vertical elements. Another focal point of the house is the spacious covered terrace area providing a relaxing space prior to entering the main living space. The connectivity of openings around the western-style kitchen at the end of the swimming pool, facilitates the openness and seamless boundaries that make these functional spaces adaptable and flexible. The grey-green volcanic stone is one of the key elements and creates a sense solidity at the base of the house. Contrasting with the stone are free-standing teakwood columns and panels which are an adaptation of the vocabulary of the traditional Thai house. These offer a touch of softness and delicacy to the material exploration of Gable house.
